Edwin Papa Eddie Newman passed beyond our grasp on Thursday, July 31, 2003. He was born in Chicago on November 24, 1920 but spent his younger years in Valley Falls, Kansas. He was the only child of Ralph and Ellen Newman. Ed served his country as a U.S. Navy Seabee in the Pacific Theater during WWII. He was a master craftsman and a Jack of All Trades. During his lifetime he was an experienced firefighter, plumber, shop foreman, vocational instructor and plant manager. He moved to New Mexico in 1963 with General Dynamics as a Preventative Maintenance Analyst during the establishment of numerous missile silos. He worked in both private industry and with the Bureau of Indian Affairs. Ed had been retired for the last 28 years. He enjoyed home maintenance, woodworking and gardening. He especially loved to plan and execute a good practical joke born from his unconventional sense of humor. That sense of humor always prevailed while he fought and won four out of five bouts with cancer during the last 38 years. Out of love for life and family, Ed fought his last cancer battle fiercely and did not give up easily. His wife of 63 years, Betty J. Newman; his children: Claudia Johnson Corlis, Nancy Pino, Amy Newman (all of Albuquerque, NM) and Ron Newman (of Aurora, CO); eight grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren survive Ed. Papa Eddie always believed that it was important to be nice to everyone but not too thick with anyone and to take everyone at face value until they prove otherwise. As he wished, cremation has taken place. A memorial service will be held at Aspen Funeral Alternatives Chapel on Saturday, August 9th at 10:00 a.m. In lieu of flowers, it is suggested that memorial donations be given to the charity of your choice or to Odyssey Hospice Foundation for Research, 3500 Comanche NE, Building F, Albuquerque, NM 87107.
