Edward E. Tinker, Maj. U.S.A.F. (retired), 85 years old, born March 8, 1918, died in Victoria, TX on July 25, 2003. He was a longtime resident of Albuquerque. He is survived by his wife, Beatrice Shafer Tinker of Victoria, TX; children, Stanley Edward Tinker and wife, Kathy,, Bill Thomas Tinker and wife, Kristi and Michael David Tinker and wife, Mikael all of Albuquerque, James Scott Tinker and wife, Debbie of Phoenix, AZ, Jeffrey Allen Tinker and wife, LeAnn of Golden, CO and Lisa Jane Tinker of Los Angeles, CA; stepsons, Dean Shafer and Bobby Shafer both of Victoria, TX and Mike Shafer of Sugarland, TX; sister, Sara Jane Soderstrom of Houston, TX; brother, William A. Tinker of Houston, TX. Ed Tinker had 14 grandchildren; eight step - grandchildren; nine great- grandchildren; and five step-great-grandchildren. Edward Tinker served for 31 years as a career Air Force fighter pilot. During WWII, he flew 42 combat missions before being shot down by a German ME-109 and spending nine months in a Bulgarian prisoner of war camp. Later he flew fighter jets during the Korean War and served his country in Asia, Europe, North Africa and the United States. He was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross with ten oak leaf clusters, the Air Medal with seven oak leaf clusters, the Purple Heart and numerous presidential citations and other meritorious awards. Ed Tinker is part Osage Indian, born in Pawhuska, OK. He was also the nephew of Maj. General Clarence L. Tinker, the namesake for Tinker Air Force Base in Oklahoma City, OK. Services are planned for Victoria, TX and a private family service in Pawhuska, OK.

Adam Witman, 82, a resident of Albuquerque since 1956, died Friday, July 25, 2003. He is survived by his wife of 61 years, Maria; sister, Mary Hertzog and her children, Maria and Jim; sister-in-law, Rita Clapper; brother-in-law, Donald Proctor; as well as many nieces and nephews. As a boy of eight years, Adam worked for a Quaker family for board and keep and attended school in Bernville, PA. Earning money for his first bicycle, he rode to his sister, Mary's home near Allentown, PA a distance of 90 miles. On December 29, 1941, Adam joined the US Army, served at Ft. Mead, MD, then transferred to New York where he married his wife, Maria. He was sent to North Africa, served in southern France, Naples, Italy and Germany. Adam served in a CCC camp in the Blue Mountains near Blair, PA. Another enlistment found Adam in the Korean War, as well as, the occupation of Japan. Sgt. Adam has been awarded several metals, decorations and awards for outstanding service to his country. A veteran of 14 years, Adam Witman, Jr. served his country well and with honor. After his discharge, Adam and Maria returned to Bethleham, PA his hometown. In 1956, they moved to Albuquerque where he worked for Prices Dairies and Burnes Guard. Memorial services will be held Monday, August 4, 11:00 a.m., at Albuquerque Regional Medical Center Chapel (formerly St. Joseph Hospital), 601 Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Ave. NE, with Father Chris O'Brien officiating. Interment of cremains will take place at Santa Fe National Cemetery at a later date.

SAMUEL RICARDO HERRERA, 71, of Santa Fe died Friday following a brief illness. He was preceded in death by his father, Ricardo Herrera and son, Patrick Vincent. He was born Nov. 16, 1931, to Ricardo and Josefita Herrera. He married Evangeline Herrera on June 16, 1955, in El Rito. He was a barber, and he owned and operated Sam's Barber Shop for the past 48 years. He served in the U.S. Army and was a member of La Union Protectiva. He loved his job and all his customers who became his friends over the years. He is survived by his wife, Evangeline Herrera; daughter, Loretta Garcia and husband Donald; son, Samuel Herrera Jr. and wife Chavi; entenados, Camille and Stephanie; mother, Josefita Herrera; three grandchildren; and one great-grandson. Visitation is 4-6 p.m. Sunday at Berardinelli Family Chapel with a 7:30 p.m. rosary at St. Anne's Catholic Church. Mass will be celebrated 10 a.m. Monday at the same church. JOHN P. LEGITS, 64, a native of Santa Fe, died Friday. He was born Feb. 24, 1939, to John and Nellie Legits. He was preceded in death by his parents; his baby brother, Socrates John Legits; and brother-in-law Tony Gonzales. He is survived by his brothers Ted Legits and wife Annie and Demosthenes Legits; sisters, Katherine Gonzales, Mary Ladue and Venus Stafford and husband Robert; and close friend, Guillermo Z. Blanco. Mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Tuesday at St. Francis Cathedral, with 11:30 a.m. burial at Santa Fe National Cemetery. JOHN HALL PENCE, 80, of Santa Fe died Friday with family and friends close by. He was born in Kansas City, Mo., and entered Northwestern University at age 16. He finished his undergraduate degree at the University of Arizona. He then started his working life selling greeting cards for the family business. He moved his family to California to attend Stanford University, where he graduated with a master's degree in history. He and Judith raised their four children, as well as numerous dogs, cats, birds and horses, in Los Altos, Calif., where he taught English at Cupertino High School. He loved teaching and was deeply loved in turn by his students. Once retired, he became an avid gardener, an opera aficionado, a beloved 'grandpa,' a world traveler, a reader of 'Charlotte's Web,' Proust, 'Wind in the Willows,' Nabokov and 'The Once and Future King.' He loved a well-cooked meal and was a frequent diner at Escalera and Kokoman. He loved to laugh with friends, cook good meals, drink good wine and talk politics. A quote hung on his refrigerator for years which read, 'I always thought I would die young. Now it is too late.' He is survived by his former wife of 35 years, Judith Gillfillan Pence; daughters, Judy Wise, Emily Ringer and Lisa Pence; son, Mark Pence; six grandchildren; and brother, William L. Pence and wife Elizabeth of Kansas City, Mo. Memorial contributions may be made to a charity of your choice. A funeral service and Eucharist will be celebrated 11 a.m. Tuesday at The Church of The Holy Faith. Berardinelli Family Funeral Service.

PERRY QUINTANA, 64, of La Mesilla died Wednesday. Perry worked as a middle school educator for the Espaņola Public Schools for 42 years. He was preceded in death by his father, Fred T. Quintana, and his first wife, Elaine Maestas Quintana. He is survived by his wife, Virginia L.R. Quintana of the home; sons, Dan Quintana of Espaņola and John Quintana and wife Theresa of Denver; two grandsons; a niece whom he helped raise, Roxanne Nimmer of Las Cruces; mother, Amelia S. Quintana of Espaņola; brothers, John N. Quintana and wife Esther and Fred L. Quintana and wife Diane, all of Espaņola; and other relatives and friends. A rosary is scheduled 7 p.m. Sunday at Block-Salazar Mortuary. Mass will be celebrated 10 a.m. Monday at La Iglesia de Santa Cruz de la Canada. ELOY WILBERT VIGIL SR., 73, of Santa Fe died May 28. He was born Nov. 4, 1929, in Dona Ana. A private memorial of life will be held today.

Victoria (Vicki) Bargas Baca, 83, beloved wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother, passed away on August 5, 1999 surrounded by her family. She is survived by her daughter, Imelda Martinez and husband, Vivian of Denver, CO; son, Leonard Baca and wife, Eleanor of Louisville, CO; and daughter, Mary Lou Jaramillo and husband, Placido of Dallas, TX; 14 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; and her only surviving sister, Jennie Bargas Garcia of Albuquerque. Mr. Baca joins her husband, Marcus, who recently passed away, and with whom she shared 63 years of marriage. She was also preceded in death by her daughter, Marie Adele; two grandchildren; and one great-grandchild. Mrs. Baca was born in Albuquerque to Martin and Victoriana Bargas. Vicki was a faithful Catholic and was actively involved in church activities throughout her life. she loved sewing, painting, and dancing the polka. Vicki opened her home to all and nurtured them with warmth, humor, and her delicious meals. She devoted her final years to caring for her husband at home during his long illness. Vicki seasoned our lives with love and brought brightness to the world, which will live on in the hearts of her large extended family and many friends. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated 6:00 p.m., Sunday, August 8, 1999, at Church of the Risen Savior with her brother-in-law, Father Paul Baca officiating. Phyllis R. Crook, 86, a resident of Albuquerque since 1944, died Wednesday, August 4, 1999. She is survived by her son, Wallace Crook and wife, Jodie of Bosque Farms; daughter, Sally Wagner and husband, William of Petaluma, CA; six grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; and sister, Lucille Drake of Atlanta, GA. Mrs. Crook was preceded in death by her husband, Vurland F. Crook. She was a member of First Baptist Church. Early Hammock, 70, died Monday morning, August 2, 1999 at her home in Sandia Park after a long battle with Parkinson's Disease. Mrs. Hammock was born in Austin, TX on May 10, 1929. She is survived by her husband, Glenn of Sandia Park; son, Steve White and wife, Diane; granddaughter, Sara; grandson, Bryan, all of Austin, TX; and brothers, John Hamlett and wife, Eleanor and family of Richardson, TX and William Hamlett and wife, Kay of Richmond, TX. Friends are welcome to a reception at the family home, #9 Entrada Granada, in Sandia Park, Saturday afternoon, August 7, 1999, 2:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. Cremation has taken place. Mary Jane Jagunich, 59, a resident of Albuquerque since 1963, passed away, Friday, August 6, 1999. She is survived by her husband, Joe Jagunich of the family home; sons, Paul Jagunich of Baltimore, MD and Michael Jagunich of Albuquerque; daughter, Sharon O'Neill and husband, Mike of Albuquerque; and her three precious grandchildren, Gunnar, Zachary and Christopher. They were her greatest joy. Mary Jane is also survived by her brothers, Steve and wife, Doris of Whitinsville, MA, Nick and wife, Ione, Jack and wife, Anna, all of Eveleth, MN, Joe and wife, Rozanne of St. Cloud, MN and Jim and wife, Donna of Eveleth, MN; and sister, Cathleen and husband, Bob of Coon Rapids, MN. Mary Jane was born July 16, 1940 in Eveleth, MN to Steve and Catherine (Zalac) Pollack, who preceded her in death. She was also preceded in death by her sister, Matilda of Illinois; and brother, Thomas of Minnesota. Mary Jane was employed by the Albuquerque Public Schools for 19 years. She was a loving wife, and caring mother and grandmother. Mary Jane was surrounded by many true and wonderful friends. She will be deeply missed by all that knew her and those whose lives she touched. Henry A. Lovato, age 83, born July 12, 1916, died peacefully at home Thursday morning, August 5, 1999. A lifelong resident of Albuquerque, he is survived by his wife, Jane; daughter, Doris Lovato; son, Henry Anthony Lovato II and wife, Carla; his other daughter, Susan Sanders and her husband, G.E.; by three loving grandchildren, Karen Lovato, and Brandon and Colt Sanders; a brother, Fred Lovato and wife, Frances; and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Frances, in 1978. A survivor of the Bataan Death March, he was a Prisoner of War for 42 months during World War II. He was a member of the 111th Calvary 200th Coast Artillery; American Defenders of Battan and Corregidor; American Ex-POW's; VFW; and DAV. He was awarded numerous medals, including the Bronze Star and Purple Heart. Honorary pallbearers are Karen Lovato, G.E., Brandon and Colt Sanders, Ralph Rodriguez, Leo Padilla and Agapita Silva. Carol McIlroy, 75, a resident of Albuquerque for 48 years, died Tuesday, August 3, 1999. She is survived by her son, David McIlroy and wife, Karen of Eagle River, AK; daughters, Jennifer Ricker and husband, Fred of Westchester, CA and Cathy Gamblin and husband, Jim of Albuquerque; grandchildren, Chris and Scott McIlroy and Kelsey and Collin Ricker; and sister-in-law, Valeria Farmer of Albuquerque. She was preceded in death by her husband, Homer C. McIlroy in 1992. Mrs. McIlroy was a member of Montgomery Blvd. Church of Christ. On Friday, April 9, 1999, Stephen Key McLelland, of Burke, Virginia, died unexpectedly. Beloved husband of Ann Harper and beloved father of Meghan Harper McLelland. He is also survived by his mother, Betty McLelland of Albuquerque; his father, Stone Key McLelland of Roswell; and his brothers, Mike McLelland, also of Albuquerque, and Chris McLelland of Texas. A Memorial service will be held Saturday, August 14, 11:00 a.m., at Mountainside Methodist Church, 6 Penny Lane, Cedar Crest. Mark C. Neel, 41, a lifelong resident of Albuquerque, died Sunday, August 2, 1999 in San Diego, CA. He is survived by his parents, Ralph and Sally Neel of Albuquerque; daughters, Alyssa Neel and Kelsey Neel of Phoenix, AZ; grandmother, Mrs. W.A. Neel of Albuquerque; grandfather, Jose H. Nevarez of T or C, NM; and many aunts, uncles, and cousins. He was preceded in death by his brother, Karl N. Neel. Mark was very close to his family, especially his cousins. He was a very spiritual person, and loved music. He was a graduate of Rio Grande High School and attended St. Mary's of the Plains in Dodge City, KS. He was senior at the University of New Mexico, majoring in journalism and film. Mark was a very artistic person, his interests in music included being a composer and performer. He was active in the theater where he performed in many plays. Mark was a member of the CWA Union and the American Photographers Association. He was a member of Our Lady of the Most Holy Rosary Catholic Church. Clifton W. Richards, age 82, born on May 3, 1917 in Stanley, New Mexico passed away on Tuesday August 3, 1999 in Westminster, Colorado. He graduated from Estancia High School. He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Ollie J. Richards of Westminster, Colorado; one son, Clifton E. Richards of Westminster, Colorado; one daughter, Patricia Pryde and son-in-law, Stephen Pryde both of Broomfield, Colorado; two granddaughters, Cynthia Spitz of Fort Collins, Colorado, and Nadine Richards of Western Australia; two great-granddaughters, Kaitlyn Spitz of Fort Collins, Colorado, Ryan Spitz and grandson-in-law, Chris Spitz both of For Collins, Colorado; five brothers, Paul Richards of Grand Junction, Colorado, Tom Richards of Grand Junction, Colorado, Bill Richards of Albuquerque, New Mexico, Charles Richards of Farmington, New Mexico, James Richards of Albuquerque, New Mexico; one sister, Lucille Skulley of Albuquerque, New Mexico. Thelma Beatrice Miller Tatkoski passed away Monday, August 2, 1999. Thelma was born to Phanie and Clyde Miller of Portales, NM on September 25, 1924. She was the second oldest of seven children. She graduated from Portales High School and attended Eastern New Mexico University. She was the secretary of the Superintendent of Portales High School. Thelma married Bowheart Frentress of Portales on January 9, 1943. She had four sons, Johnny M., Richard M., David W., and Waylon C. She was preceded in death by her parents, Clyde L. in 1938 and Phanie R. Miller in 1994; son, Johnny M. in 1948; her husband, Naval Lt. Commander Bowhart Frentress in 1965; and her sister, Erma Miller in 1987. Thelma married Arthur J. Tatkoski, of Albuquerque, on September 30, 1966, and had a daughter, Leslie Ann. She was a past member and elder of the Las Mesa Presbyterian Church. She was active in the Women's Guild Bridge Group at Annunciation Church. Thelma owned and operated the Stained Glass Center on Osuna since 1983. She was an active member of the New Mexico Glass Artist Association and held several offices throughout the years, including Secretary, Treasurer and President. She was a joint owner, with her husband, of the Tatkoski Studio. Thelma loved people and devoted her life to her family, friends and to the work she loved. Her business became her social life as her customers became her friends. They loved and respected her for her friendliness and knowledge. She was a loving and devoted wife, mother and grandmother. Her sudden and unexpected death will impact not only her family, but the community as well. She was deeply loved and will be sadly missed by her husband, Arthur J. Tatkoski; sons, Richard M. Frentress and wife, Daphnie of Round Mountain, NV, David W. Frentress and wife, Brenda of Charlotte, MI, Waylon C. Frentress of Albuquerque; daughter, Leslie Ann Tatkoski Smith of Albuquerque; grandchildren, Suzzette Frentress Curtis, Jason, Darren, David, Joseph and Zoe Anne Frentress, and Brandon and Nathan Smith; brothers, Clyde L. Miller of Hawaii, Melvin T. Miller of Carlsbad, NM; sisters, Alta Lawbon of El Campo, TX, Ruth W. Mason of Anacortes, WA, Marlene J. Campbell of Artesia, NM; and other members of her extended family. Mr. Joseph "Joe" Granados died on Saturday at the age of 80. He was a resident of Albuquerque since 1944. Mr. Granados was originally from Gallup, New Mexico. He was a member of Queen of Heaven Catholic Church. Mr. Granados was also a retired member of Carpenter's Local Union 1319, and an original member of the Grower's Market. He recently was retired from his pinon business. Mr. Granados is preceded in death by his parents, Jesus and Socorro Granados; and his grandson, Brian Zubia. He is survived by his wife of 56 years, Dolores DeLara Granados; his son, Raymond Granados of Poway, CA; grandsons, Kirk Zubia and Jason Zubia; his daughters, Frances Williams of Laguna, NM, Ellen Sparks of Baton Rouge, LA, Linda De La Pena; his sister, Margarita Granados of Los Angeles, CA; 14 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; and 4 great-great-grandchildren. Funeral services for Mr. Granados will be held on Tuesday at the Queen of Heaven Catholic Church where the Mass will be celebrated at 10:00 a.m. Burial will follow at Mt. Calvary Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Kirk Zubia, Jason Zubia, Danny Zubia, Andre Campos, Jerry T. Campos, and Braulio Vega. A Rosary will be recited on Monday night at 7:30 p.m. at the Salazar & Sons Mortuary. Marvis Ella Bates Jones, 74, passed away on Friday, August 4, 2000 in Socorro, NM. She was born on June 24, 1926 to Oscar and Lizzie Buley Salsman in Mack, KY. Marvis came to the Southwest when she was 20 years old. She married Tom H. Bates on April 18, 1949 and they lived near Mexico City, Mexico before returning to his ranch near Quemado, NM where they raised three children. In 1983 they sold the Drag Y Ranch and retired to Socorro. Tom preceded her in death in 1985. She married Robert P. Jones of Globe, AZ and resided in Arizona for a short while before returning to Socorro. She is survived by her husband, Robert of their home in Socorro; daughter, Jane Ferguson of Socorro; sons, Tom H. Bates Jr. of Cove, AR and Tim Bates of Albany, OR; sisters, Opal Chisholm, Elsie Watson and Leora Salsman, all of the Kewanee, IL area and Macel Thompson of Campbellsvile, KY; niece, Veronica Parker of Moriarty, NM; nine grandchildren; ten great-grandchildren; and other relatives and friends. It should be noted that Marvis recently acquired a new fish story to now be told in Heaven. Visitation will be held Tuesday, August 8, 2000 from 10:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. at Steadman- Hall Funeral Home. Marvis will be laid to rest on Friday, August 11, 2000 at Pleasant View Cemetery in Kewanee, IL. Arrangements by Steadman- Hall Funeral Home, Socorro, NM.

John H. Jornigan, 66, a loved husband and friend, passed away suddenly on Thursday, August 3, 2000. He was born in Chillicothe, Ohio on December 3, 1933. John served with the U.S. Air Force for 20 years and retired as a MSGT in 1972. He was the Field Operations Director with the NM State Highway and Transportation Department until 1991. He retired and traveled with his wife, and he played the horses when he could. He is survived by his wife, Carolie; dog, Cody; step-daughter, Wendy Deluca of Albuquerque; mother, Hazel Jornigan; sisters, Emma Holtz and Mary Short; and brother, Scott Jornigan all from Ohio; brother-in-law, Jerry Crowder and wife, Kathryn; nephews, Matthew Crowder and Nathan Crowder and wife, Brandy; daughters, Gail Spiess, Cheryl Guilmett, Beverly Jornigan; son, Glenn Jornigan; and grandchildren. We all miss him very much. Graveside services will be held, Tuesday, 11:30 a.m., at Santa Fe National Cemetery. French Mortuary, 7121 Wyoming Blvd. NE.

Vincent Irene Price, age 74, a resident here since 1949, passed away Friday in a local hospital. She was preceded in her death by her loving husband of 52 years, Kenneth L. McKown. Her son, Randal McKown; daughter-in-law, Barbara Belanger; granddaughter, Allie McKown; and sisters, Sue Birkelo and LaRue Smyers survive her. Mrs. McKown was a retired school teacher from Albuquerque Public Schools having taught many years at Monroe Junior High and Manzano High School. Funeral services will be held at 10:00 a.m. Monday at St. Mark's on the Mesa Episcopal Church, 431 Richmond Place NE followed by graveside services in Santa Fe at the National Cemetery at 1:30 p.m. Strong-Thorne Mortuary, 1100 Coal Avenue SE, in charge of arrangements.
