Anthony A. "Senator" Lucero, 80, died, Thursday, August 2, 2001 in Seattle, WA due to complications of pneumonia and cardiac arrest. He was born March 5, 1921 in historic Old Town to father, Bacilio Bart Lucero and mother, Dolorita Dolores Lucero. His beloved wife, Flora Z. Lucero passed away on May 16, 1994. They raised their family of six children in Albuquerque's Los Duranes neighborhood. Tony was a World War II Army Veteran and served in the State House of Representatives (District 6) for two years, then in the State Senate (District 13) for 10 years. Senator Lucero was a well-liked politician who served his community with pride and compassion. He was a great storyteller with fond memories of his days growing up in Albuquerque, his World War II days, and most of all his time as a politician. He was very proud of his children and grandchildren and spoke very highly of them all. He loved his wife, Flora, dearly and especially missed her cooking. He stressed to his children and everyone else the importance of an education and being an American. He loved to eat and loved to talk. He had many, many friends and family members and will be deeply missed. He is survived by his six children, Anthony E. Lucero, Jr., Esther M. Lucero-Miner, her husband, John Miner, Mariana E. Lucero, M.D., Judith E. Jaramillo, her husband, Mannie Jaramillo, Thaddeus P. Lucero, his wife, Arleen Lucero, and Flora T. Lucero; his seventeen grandchildren, Antonio Lucero III, Amalia Lucero, Alejandro Lucero, Javier Lucero, Marcilla Lucero-Miner, Roberto Lucero-Miner, Cristina Lucero, Celestina Lucero, Monique Jaramillo, Edissa Jaramillo, Andres Jaramillo, Mario Lucero, Alysia Lucero, Paul Lucero, John-Mark Serna, Elisabeth Lucero-Serna and Christopher Lucero; and one great-granddaughter, Analicia Lucero. May he rest in peace and return to the arms of his beloved wife and to the hands of our Lord in Heaven. Rosary will be recited Tuesday, 6:00 p.m. at St. Joseph on the Rio Grande Catholic Church, 5901 St. Joseph Dr. NW with Deacon Gerald Hietpas reciting. Prayer Service, Wednesday 10:00 a.m. at St. Joseph on the Rio Grande Catholic Church with Deacon Gerald Hietpas reciting. Interment will take place at Santa Fe National Cemetery. Mass of Christian Burial for Mrs. Isabel O. Marquez will be celebrated Tuesday morning at 10:00 at St. Theresa Catholic Church in Grants, New Mexico with final viewing at the church from 9:30 untill 10:00. Father Emerick celebrant. Interment will follow at Mt. Calvary Cemetery in Albuquerque. Gabaldon Mortuary, 1000 Old Coors Rd SW in charge of the arrangements.

Jose Cardenio Montoya, Sr., 80, a resident of Ranchos de La Joya, peacefully passed away on Sunday, August 05, 2001. He was a member of Our Lady of Sorrows Catholic Church in La Joya, NM. He proudly served his country with the US Army in Germany during WWII. He was preceded in death by his parents, Hipolito and Francisca Montoya; his son, Cardenio, Jr.; his daughter, Ofelia Morales; three sisters, Petrita Montoya; Ramona Padilla; and Lencha Sedillo; and his niece, Auntie Betty. Cardeno is survived by his two daughters, Frances Beasley and her husband, Henry of Truth or Consequences; and Elsie Anaya and her husband, Luis of Socorro; six grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; one brother, Ruben Montoya and his wife, Margie; one sister, Manuela Garcia and her husband, Carley, all of Socorro; his four nephews, Phil; Herman; Abel; and Joey Montoya; and three nieces, Judy Silva; and Emily Mathieu, both of Socorro; and Rosie Garcia, of Riverside, CA.. A Viewing will be held on Tuesday, 8:00am at the San Miguel Catholic Church in Socorro with a Funeral Mass at 9:00am. Interment will follow at 12:30 p.m. in the Santa Fe National Cemetery. Pallbearers will be his grandchildren, Henry and James Beasley, Pamela Monette, Elizabeth Lam, Nicholas Morales, Jr., and Catherine Anaya. Romero Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements

Maria De La Luz Munoz,, 62, was called home to the Lord on August 5, 2001. Visitation will be held Tuesday, August 7th from 5:00 to 7:00pm in the 8th Street Chapel of Garcia Mortuary. A Rosary will be recited at 7:00pm also in the Chapel of Garcia Mortuary. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Wednesday August 8th at 10:00 a.m. at Holy Family Catholic Church. Antonio G. Pino, age 96, went home to our Lord August 6, 01. He was born December, 1904 in San Acacio, New Mexico to Manuel Antonio and Cleofas Pino. He lived most of his life in Magdalena, New Mexico, moving to Albuquerque in 1965. Antonio was preceded in death by his wife, Louisa; son, Salvador; daughter, Mary Magdalene; daughter-in-law, Grego Pino; sons-in-law, Bacilio Gomez and Terry Biggs; and grandson, Bob Aragon. He is survived by four daughters, Esther Gomez, Josephine Biggs, Beulah Aragon and husband, Robert, Grace Aragon and husband, Roy; four sons, Paul and wife, Esther, Louis and wife, Mary Ellen, Jim Pino and Lana Hudson, and Sam Pino; 27 grandchildren; 48 great-grandchildren; one great great-grandchild; brothers, Ray Pino and Ricardo Pino and wife, Mary; sister, Chena Benavidez; and numerous nieces and nephews. Visitation for Mr. Pino will be held on Tuesday from 3:00 p.m. until 5:00 p.m. in the Salazar & Sons Mortuary chapel . A Rosary will be recited Tuesday evening, August 7, 01, at 7:00 p.m. Mass will be celebrated Wednesday, August 8, 01, at 10:00 a.m. Both Rosary and Mass will take place at Church of the Ascension at 2150 Raymac SW. Howard C. Rhoads, 46, beloved son and brother was called home to be with the Lord Wednesday, August 1, 2001. Mr. Rhoads was born in Riverside, CA to the late Harold C. Rhoads and Mary Eva Campos Rhoads. He was a life long resident of Albuquerque, he resided at the Copper Ave. Group Home. He enjoyed travel, automobiles and avian studies. He is survived by his loving mother, four sisters, Camilla Morton of Gaithersburg, MD, Angela Steele of Stockton, CA, Rhonda Johnston of Munford, TN and Dorothy Frazee of Albuquerque, NM and nine nieces and nephews. He will be greatly missed by his loving family and by those who loved and knew him. A visitation will be held on Wednesday August 7th from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. at Holy Ghost Catholic Church. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at Holy Ghost Catholic Church on Wednesday August 8th at 7:30 p.m. Services are in the care of Garcia Mortuary 717 Stover Ave. SW 243-5222.

Grace Elizabeth (Young) Richardson, local resident of Owasso, died Thursday, August 2, 2001, at the age of 89 years. She was born September 5, 1911, at Schuyler, Nebraska, to Frank and Mary (Motacek) Young. She was reared and educated in the Columbus, Nebraska area, and graduated with the Columbus High School Class of 1929. She continued her education at the University of Nebraska graduating in 1934 with a Bachelors os Science Degree in Education. She was married June 10, 1934, in Lincoln, Nebraska, to William N. "Bill" Richardson. In 1948 they moved to Albuquerque, New Mexico. Grace began teaching school in 1954. She graduated in 1961 with her Masters Degree in Counseling and Guidance from the University of New Mexico. Most of her teaching career was at Woodrow Wilson Junior High School in Albuquerque, wher she taught Latin and social studies before becoming their counselor. She was an active member of the First Baptist Church of Albuquerque where she taught Sunday School for 40 years. She enjoyed a variety of pastimes including gardening and reading. She and Bill traveled to Alaska, New England, New Zealand, and Australia, before making Owasso their home in 1997. Lovinf family members include: Son and daughter-in-law, Bill F. and Flo Richardson of North Dallas, Texas; grandchildren, Joy Richardson Biscotto and her husband, Mark, of Ann Arbor, Michigan, Jay Richardson and his wife, Heather, of Frisco Texas, Pat Foster Golightly and her husband, Ryan, of Owasso, Michael Foster, of Owasso; great-grandchildren, Jordan and Leah Richardson, and Sara Biscotto; sister abd brother-in-law, Hazel and Lloyd Naden, of Franklin, Nebraska; brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Orrin and Vivian Richardson, of Mission, Texas. She was preceded in death by her husband, Bill Richardson, on July 24, 1999, and one sister, Edith Williams. Funeral services were held Monday, August 6, 2001, at Mowery Chapel in Owasso, Oklahoma with Paster Leonard Pirtle officiating. John "Nine" Salas, 66, a resident of Albuquerque for 32 years; a loving husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather and friend, died Saturday, August 4, 2001. He is survived by his wife of 48 years, Mary B. Salas of Albuquerque; daughters, Susan Padilla and husband, Ronald and Anna Salas; granddaughters, Cynthia Salas, Rhonda Padilla, Rachelle Padilla, Roseann Moya and Delilah Moya; three great-grandchildren; sisters, Anita Lopez and Ramona Ulibarri, both of Santa Rosa; and special family members, Mrs. Orlinda Martinez, Joe and Irene Mora, Yvonne Ortega and Yvette Martinez. Rosary will be recited Wednesday, 7:00 p.m., at French Mortuary, University Blvd. Chapel, 1111 University Blvd. NE, with Deacon Gilbert Valverde reciting. Anna Phyllis Sanderville born February 27, 1919, in Chico, CA passed away August 5, 2001 in Albuquerque, NM at the age of 82. She was preceded in death by her husband of 47 years Richard Noble Sanderville a Blackfeet Indian and a WWII Veteran. Phyllis is survived by brother, Jim Coburn; two sisters, Jesse Redfox and June Ryland; daughter, Maria Ring; sons, Richard, Oliver, Jim and Scott; eleven grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren. Phyllis was a member of the Klamath Indian Tribe. She was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother to her entire family. She was a person who dedicated her entire life to raising her family. Rosary will be recited Tuesday, 7:00 p.m. at French Mortuary-Westside Chapel, 9300 Golf Course Rd. NW (2blks north of Paseo del Norte). Mass will be celebrated Wednesday, 10:00 a.m. at Santuario de San Martin, 8321 Camino San Martin SW with Father James Vance celebrant. Services are scheduled at 10:00 a.m. Wednesday, August 8, at First Baptist Church for Dr. Casmir Alexander Stryjewski, 301 W. Missouri, Artesia, New Mexico. Dr. Stryjewski, 88, died Saturday August 4, 2001 at his home. Rev. Rick Sullivan will officiate at the services with burial at Woodbine Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Saied Namek, Larry Davis, Jimmy Johnson, Ray Sego, Jim Gaddy, M.J. Grafe, and Bill Johnson. Honorary will be all friends at the Senior Center. Dr. Stryjewski was born October 29, 1912 in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, the son of Wawrzyniec Stryjewski and Czelsawa (Wiechowski) Stryjewski. On August 12, 1938, he was married to Mary E. Mulford in Kirksville, Missouri. He came to Artesia in January 1946 from Jacksonville, Missouri. She preceded him in death August 15, 1992. He was a Physician and member of the baptist denomination, Mason, American Osteopathic Association, Oddfellows, active at the Senior Center, past member and President of the Artesia Board of Education. He was preceded in death by his parents and brother Roman Stryjewski, a grandson Eric Sujka. Survivors include daughters Susan Sujka of Albuquerque, NM, Bonnie Sego of Los Lunas, NM, Syliva Johnson of Cottonwood, NM; brother Stanley Stryjewski of Davenport, Iowa; sisters Laura Kulas of West Allis, Wisconsin Agnes Mohalski Chesterine Koth, Sophia bruskiewitz, Casmira Tanty all of Milwaukee, Wisconsin; grandchildren Rachael Sego, Benjamin Sego and Ashley Sego all of Los Lunas. Kristin Diegle of Phoenix, Arizona and Jordan Johnson of Cottonwood.

Bernadette (Bernie) G. Telles left this world in the early morning hours of August 3rd, 2001 with her son Arthur by her side. Bernie was born in Old Town in Albuquerque on August 20, 1913. Her beloved husband, Elias W. Telles preceded her and was greatly missed by Bernie. She is survived by her caring brother, Robert Ruiz Esparza of Albuquerque, as well as her three children, Gerald Telles and his wife, Clara of San Diego, CA, Patricia Hambright and her husband, Zora of Las Vegas, NV, and her devoted son, Arthur Telles of Albuquerque; plus all her grandchildren and great grandchildren and many nieces and nephews throughout the country and her many friend through the years. Mass of Christian Burial will be held Thursday, August 9, 2001, at 10:00 a.m. at the Gate of Heaven Mausoleum Chapel, Fr. Richard Olona celebrant. Elizabeth "Liz" Warren, age 48 passed away, on August 3, 2001, she was a resident of NM since 1980. Liz is survived, by family and friends. She was a dedicated Occupational Therapist, providing services to the communitities of Albuquerque & Los Lunas. Memorial services will be Tuesday, August 7, 2001, at 6:00 p.m., at Los Lunas Community Program Chapel (the old Los Lunas Training School). Reception will follow the service. Calvin K. Wood was born October 19, 1945 in Texas. He passed away August 4, 2001 at the Veterans Hospital in Albuquerque. He is survived by numerous family members and friends who loved and will miss him. A visitation will be held at Albuquerque Bible Church, 320 Montano NW., on Tuesday, August 7, 2001 from 6:00pm to 8:00pm. LIBERATO GONZALES, 79, of San Isidro Norte, N.M., died Saturday at the Northeastern Regional Hospital in Las Vegas, N.M. He loved to work in the garden and chop wood. He was preceded in death by his parents, Meliton and Aurora; brothers, Genovevo Gonzales, and Isidoro; and sister, Simplicia Gallegos. He is survived by his sisters, Teresita Gonzales of San Isidro Norte and Donicia Berton of Albuquerque; brother, Aurelio Gonzales of Albuquerque; and numerous nieces and nephews. RUDY R. GONZALES, 69, of Albuquerque died Saturday. He was born Jan. 21, 1932, in Colonias. He served in the U.S. Air Force during the Korean War. Following his discharge, he and his parents purchased and managed Dee's Bar in Santa Rosa for five years. He graduated from New Mexico Highlands University with a bachelor's degree in business administration in 1961. He received his master's degree from the American Institute for Foreign Trade in Phoenix. He worked as an international sales manager with Emerson Electric, traveling to many foreign countries. He was preceded in death by his parents, Leonardo and Mela Gonzales; sisters, Pita 'Rita' Urban, and Angie Dunn; brothers, Anthony Gonzales and Johnny Gonzales; nephews, Steven, Ernest and Gene Gonzales; and niece, Ida Aguilar. He is survived by his brothers, Leonard Gonzales of Santa Rosa, and Gene Gonzales of Espaņola. Cremation has taken place. ESTHER WINIFRED GOREY, 92, of Santa Fe died Aug. 2. She was born in Waterville, N.Y. She later lived in Utica, N.Y., and then New York City. She received her degree in library science from Columbia University in New York City. She retired from the New York Public Library in 1970. She moved to Santa Fe in 1975. She was preceded in death by her parents; and a brother, all of New York. Mass will be celebrated at noon Wednesday at the St. Francis Cathedral. IGNACIO `MR. G' GUTIERREZ, 76, of Taos died Saturday. He retired in 1992 following 33 years of service as a maintenance workers for the Taos Municipal Schools. He was preceded in death by his sons, Juan, George and Tommy Gutierrez. He is survived by his wife of 54 years, Sophia Gutierrez; children,Libby Romero and husband Isaac of Llano Quemado, Joe Gutierrez and wife Clarasue, and Frank Gutierrez and wife Yolanda, all of Albuquerque, Julian Gutierrez and wife Eileen of Taos, Pauline Gutierrez of Albuquerque, and Rita Gutierrez of Llano Quemado; 12 grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; brothers, Lupe Gutierrez of Los Angeles, Antonio Gutierrez of Colimas, Mexico, and Jose Gutierrez of Sacramento, Calif.; half-sister, Rachel Gutierrez of Sacramento, Calif.; and numerous other relatives and friends. CORDELIA LOPEZ, 86, of Cordova died Sunday. She was a loving homemaker and loved to cook and bake. She was preceded in death by her husband, Elias Lopez; son, Jimmy Lopez; grandchildren, Paul and Eppie Lopez; father, Donicio Cordova; and mother, Rosenda Cordova. She is survived by her children, Horacio Lopez and wife Cheryl of Las Vegas, Nev., Flora Vigil and husband Leroy of Truchas, Rose Gallardo and husband Nicolas of White Rock, Ruby Owens and husband Jim of Las Vegas, Nev., and Diane Martinez and husband Ron of Santa Fe; grandchildren, Lisa and Lori Lopez, Brenda Griego, Della Ulibarri, Aggie Vigil, Darlene Scott, Doreen Chavez, Christine Gallardo, Julie Gallardo, Sandi Berendji, Nicholas and Stephen Martinez, Jimmy, Ronnie, Crystal, Mark, Becky and Joe Lopez; niece, Lorraine Sandoval; and numerous other relatives and friends. CRUSITA MADRID, 90, of Rio Puerco died Saturday. She was born May 30, 1911, to Eliseo and Marinita Velasquez in Rio Puerco. She married Facundo Madrid in September 1929 in El Rito. She was preceded in death by her husband of 72 years, Facundo Madrid; son, Misel Candido; granddaughters, Darlene Robins, and Barbara M. Herrera; grandsons, Felipe Madrid Jr., and Robert Joseph Guillen; and all her sisters and brothers, Victoriana Serrano, Benigna Gallegos, Manuel Velasquez, Adronico Velasquez, Odela Chacon, Angelina Herrera, Eloisa Maestas and Eva Velasquez. She is survived by her children, Cordelia M. Mayrant and husband RB of Phelan, Calif., Magdalena and husband Leo Boyd of Abingdon, Va., Ildefonso and Elsie Madrid of Youngsville, Richard and Cordy Madrid of Caņones, Felipe Madrid of Grand Junction, Colo., Matilda and Herman Salazar of Youngsville, and Alvaro; brothers-in-law, Octaviano Madrid, and Anselmo Madrid; 33 grandchildren; 55 great-grandchildren; 18 great-great-grandchildren; and numerous other relatives and friends. JOSIE MADRID, 89, of Fairview and formerly of Vallecitos died Thursday following a lengthy illness. She was a member of La Sociedad de Las Hermanas Unidas. She was preceded in death by her husband, Fabian Madrid; and daughter, Lina Herrera. She is survived by her children, Ross Herrera and wife Beatrice of Albuquerque, Enoch Madrid of Espaņola, Ruby Medina and husband Frank of Cuarteles, and Martha Herrera and husband Larry of Pojoaque; sister, Ramona Martinez; six sisters-in-law; one brother-in-law; 25 grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; five great-great-grandchildren; and numerous other relatives and friends. GILBERT A. SANDOVAL of Santa Fe died Saturday. He was born in Torreon and graduated from the Santa Fe Indian School. He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II. While in the service, he became a Golden Gloves boxing champion. He worked primarily as a stone mason and plasterer. He was actively involved with the Native American baseball league in the Santa Fe area. He was preceded in death by his sons, Francis (Stuka) and William Sandoval. He is survived by his wife, Romoncita Sandoval; sister, Vita Trujillo of Torreon; daughters-in-law, Margaret Mendez of Santa Fe, and Lorraine Alvarez of Phoenix; grandchildren, Carole Sandoval and husband Peter Engstrom of San Juan Pueblo, Francisco Sandoval and girlfriend, Sue Naranjo of Santa Fe, Vanessa Gleich and husband Anthony of San Juan Pueblo, William Sandoval of Phoenix, John Sandoval and wife Janet of Richland, Wash., and Linda Sandoval and boyfriend Damon Billie of Phoenix; great-grandchildren Erin, Francis, Jacqueline, Kristoffer, Lindsay, Jeremy, Sage, Sofia, Jordan, Joshua, David, Damon, Dominic, Monique, and Jonah; sisters-in-law Piedad Antione, Geronima Montoya, and Reycita Jiron and husband Charlie; and numerous other relatives and friends. MICHAEL A. TAFOYA, 53, of Colorado Springs, Colo., died Saturday. He was born Feb. 29, 1948, in Santa Fe. He was a self-employed Native American entertainer and had performed at Disneyland, on television, and in Europe, Asia and Australia. He was preceded in death by his father, Joseph Tafoya Jr. He is survived by his sons, Michael Tafoya Jr., and Kenny Tafoya, both of Colorado Springs, Colo.; daughter, Latana Tafoya of Colorado Springs, Colo.; mother, Trudy White Cloud Tafoya of Colorado Springs, Colo.; brothers Leonard Tafoya of Santa Clara, Dennis Tafoya of Hermosa Beach, Calif., and Robert Tafoya of Colorado Springs, Colo.; sister, Linda Ikazaki; and numerous other relatives and friends. Funeral services were held on Monday at the Santa Clara Catholic Church. Burial followed at the Santa Clara Cemetery. DeVargas Funeral Home, Espaņola.

KEITH L. VEO, 40, of Questa died Saturday. He was preceded in death by his mother, Priscilla `Sheila' Martinez Veo; and grandparents Ester and Otoniel Martinez. He is survived by his wife, Serbie Veo; children, Andrea S. Casias, Arturo Arellano, and Jason Veo; father, George M. Veo; grandmother, Lucy Cater; brother, George L. Veo and wife Parrie; sister, E. Darlene Lundy and husband James; nieces and nephews, Michelle Wright and husband Daniel, Brenda Lundy and husband Elgin, Cheryl Galarza and husband Brian, Kristofer Lundy and wife Amanda, Adam Veo and wife Jennifer, Justin and Thomas Veo; aunt, Carmen Cordova and husband Lee; uncles, Joe Martinez and wife Eutimia, and Romulo Martinez and wife Juanita; and numerous other relatives. A rosary will be recited at 7 p.m. Wednesday at the Rivera-Hanlon Funeral Home in Taos. Mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Thursday at St. Anthony Catholic Church in Questa. Rivera-Hanlon Funeral Home, Taos.

Robert Caldwell. Memorial Services will be held for Robert Caldwell of Oceanside on Thursday, August 8, 2002 at 3:00 p.m. at Waud's Funeral Home, Tillamook. Mr. Caldwell was born April 24, 122 in Fertigs, PA to Roy and Vivian (Mudge) Caldwell and passed away August 2, 2002 in Oceanside, Oregon at the age of 80. Mr. Caldwell grew up on his parents farm in rural Pennsylvania. He was one of eight children. He worked on their farm driving the team of horses plowing fields and also logging near by lands. He later worked in the ship yards building ships prior to his service in World War II. He served in the US Army during WWII in Normandy during the D-Day Invasion landing on Utah Beach with the 90th Division. During the battle at St. Lo, Mr. Caldwell was shot 6 times by a Germany machine gun. He was shipped to a hospital and it was there that he met his wife, Elizabeth Smeltzer. They were married on February 13, 1945 in Oil City, PA. Mr. Caldwell later worked in Erie, PA in a rubber factory until 1957. He then moved to Albuquerque, New Mexico and worked for the US Postal Service as Clerk and Supervisor. He retired about 1984 and several years later moved to Oceanside, Oregon where they had visited on a vacation. Mr. Caldwell was a member of the Disabled Veterans. He loved to fish, care for his cats, and take long walks on the beach. Just last August, Mr. Caldwell was able to take a trip back to Normandy with his son and granddaughter. Mr. Caldwell is survived by his wife, Elizabeth Caldwell of Oceanside, OR; three sons, Robert Caldwell of Helena, MT, Stephen Caldwell of Cedar Crest, NM and Mark Caldwell of Rio Rancho, NM; brother, John Caldwell of Gerard, PA; sister, Joan Tarr of Oil City, PA and three grandchildren.
