JOSEPHINE F. MAESTAS, 73, of California and originally of Cuarteles died Friday. She was preceded in death by her husband, Jose C. Maestas; children, Rosemary Chacon, Priscilla, Lawrence, Manuel and Joe C. Maestas Jr. and her parents, Sotero and Ana Maria Fresquez. She is survived by two daughters, Lorraine Chavez and Jackie Armijo both of California; nine grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; sisters, Anita Martinez of Albuquerque, Adelita Salazar of Chamita and Lydia Martinez of Midvale, Colo.; brothers, Martin Fresquez of Santo Nino, Nino Fresquez and wife Corine of Velarde, Sotero Fresquez of Santo Nino and Agapito Fresquez and wife Flora of California; and many other relatives and friends. Visitation is 4 p.m. today with a 7 p.m. rosary at Block-Salazar Mortuary. Mass is tentatively scheduled for 9:30 a.m. Friday at La Iglesia de Santa Cruz de la Canada. MIQUELITA MONTOYA MARTINEZ, 97, of Vadito died Tuesday. She was born Dec. 31, 1905, to Pilar and Sarafina Baca. She was preceded in death by her parents; infant son, Nelson; daughter, Aurelia; son, Edwardo; brother, Hignio; sisters, Esperanza, Doloritas and Elvira; half-brother, Jose; and half-sister, Ofelia. She is survived by her children, Adelaida Gonzales and husband Gabriel, Tonita Garcia and husband Fred, Harold Martinez and wife Theresa and adopted grandson, Delfino Martinez and wife Janice; half-brother, David; half-sisters, Maxine and Angie; 23 grandchildren; 52 great-grandchildren; 29 great-great-grandchildren; and many other relatives and friends. Rosaries will be recited 3 p.m. and 7 p.m. today at Our Lady of Sorrows Church in Vadito. Mass will be celebrated 10 a.m. Friday at the same church with burial to follow at the Vadito Cemetery. EPPIE VALDES, 91, of Santa Fe for more than 70 years died Wednesday. She was born on her grand-uncle Epimenio Martinez's ranch near Wagon Mound on Sept. 8, 1911. She was the oldest of five children of the late Eduardo Severino Mares and Alice Martinez. Her great-great-grand uncle was the famous Padre Antonio Jose Martinez of Taos. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her father Eduardo Mares, mother Alice Mares, sister Alyce Quintana, her husband Johnnie Valdes and her son Don Juan Valdes. She graduated from Raton High School in 1930. Soon after, she moved to Santa Fe, where she met and married her husband Johnnie on May 8, 1932. Her son Don Juan was born in 1933 and daughter Alice McKirnan in 1935. Until her retirement in 1959, Eppie worked for the state. She headed the Grazing Division of the State Land Office for many years. After 62 years of marriage, her husband Johnnie died Oct. 15, 1994. Well before the era of the civil rights movement, Eppie advocated for equality for both women and Hispanics. A very strong, forceful and competent person, Eppie rose to senior level management jobs in the state at a time when it was exceedingly rare for women to occupy such positions. She was also very active in her community, including serving as an officer in the League of United Latin American Citizens. At home, Eppie enjoyed painting, gardening, crocheting and cooking. Eppie is survived by her daughter Alice, grandson Chuck McKirnan, wife Sandy and their son Darrick of Irvine, Calif.; granddaughter Michele Stone, husband Augie Gonzales and daughters Brittany, Paige, Alex and Chelsea of Santa Fe; grandson Mike McKirnan of Santa Fe; brother Chris Mares and wife Donna of Falls Church, Va.; brother Ernie Mares of Albuquerque; and many other relatives and friends. CELSO 'MORE OR LESS' ARELLANO, 76, of Arroyo Hondo, died Monday in Santa Fe. He married Lucia in 1979. He owned the Valley Bar in Arroyo Hondo. He was a veteran of World War II, having served in the Marine Corps. He was a member of Our Lady of Sorrows Church in Arroyo Hondo. He was preceded in death by his parents, Octaviana and Jose Adan Arellano; son, Larry Arellano; and granddaughter, Melissa Trujillo. He is survived by his wife, Lucia; children, Lester Arellano and wife Lucina, Marbella Arellano, Celso Arellano, Oliver Arellano and wife Julie, Jeanette Martinez and husband Carlos, and Martin Arellano and wife Sheila; stepchildren, Debbie Martin and husband John, and Yolanda Chacon and husband Edward; brother, Hernando Arellano and niece, Loucella Trujillo; 12 grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and six step grandchildren. Mass will be celebrated at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at Our Lady of Sorrows Church in Arroyo Hondo. Burial will follow at the Rael Cemetery. Sisneros LaFollette Family Funeral Service.

JAMES A. HEDLUND, 64, of Questa, died Sunday. He retired from F.C. Hayer Co. in Minnetonka, Minn., in 1993 and moved to Questa in September 1994. He was an artist of landscaping and western paintings. He was preceded in death by his parents, Arthur and Thelma Hedlund; sister, Linda Phillips; and stepfather, Clarence Dehn. He is survived by his wife of 32 years, Lynn Hedlund; children, Lisa Bredlow (Bill) of Baltimore, Laura Casey (Winston) of Arlington, Va., and Eric Hedlund of El Prado; five grandchildren; stepmother, Margaret Hedlund; and former wife, Nancy Boughn. Juanita Cox, 79, a resident of Albuquerque since 1947 and long time member of Highland Baptist Church passed away on August 7, 1999 at home. Juanita was born on November 2, 1999 in Coschata, Louisiana to Samual and Hazel Norrid. She is preceded in death by her husband, Robert G. Cox who passed away in January of this year. Juanita is survived by two sons, Robert D. Cox and wife, Greta of Albuquerque and Glynn L. Cox and wife, Patricia of Hurst, Texas; four grandchildren, Sheryl King and husband, James, David Cox and fiancee Tammi, Richard Cox and wife, Amy, Deann Ragland and husband Bryon. She is also survived by a great-grandchild, Robbie Rangland. Zean Davis, 61, a resident of Albuquerque since 1977, died Friday, August 6, 1999. He is survived by his wife, Lorraine M. Davis of the family home; daughter, Jennifer Shilko and husband, Cameron; son, Martin Davis; daughter, Lynn Henderson and husband, Grady, all of Albuquerque; two grandchildren, Cameron Shilko, Jr. and Lauryn Shilko; mother, Olena (Peggy) Davis White of Chetek, WI; brother, Boyd Davis and wife, Judy of Forsyth, MT; and numerous aunts, uncles, nieces and nephews. Russell (Tom) Dawe left his family and friends to be with the Lord on August 7, 1999. Tom Dawe was born on June 21, 1926 in Gallup, New Mexico to Russell C. and Mable E. Dawe. In 1934 the family moved to Albuquerque. He graduated Albuquerque High School in 1944 the same year he married his highschool sweetheart, Mary Jo Moran. They celebrated their 55th wedding anniversary on August 2.
Tom served in the Army Air Corps Cadet Program during World War II. Following his military service Tom studied at Spartan School of Aeronautics from which he graduated in 1946. From 1946 until 1949, he taught aviation at Highlands University in Las Vegas, until he went to work for Carco Air Service as a pilot and mechanic in Albuquerque. He continued pursuing his passion for aviation when he was hired as a pilot with United Airlines in 1953. During his 33 year career with United, he flew every plane in the company's fleet, from the DC-3 to the 747. As a pilot, he represented all of the United Air Line pilots as Chairman of the Master Executive Council for the Air Line Pilots Association (ALPA). Following his service with the pilots' union, Tom moved into management, where he was named Chief Pilot for New York and then later for United's flight operations at O'Hare International Airport, United's largest operation as well as the busiest airport in the world. At that time of his retirement from United in 1986, he was a 747 Captain for United in Chicago. In retirement, Tom continued with his love of aviation by restoring vintage aircraft at his home on Mid Valley Airpark in Los Lunas. He was also a member of the Quiet Birdmen (QBs) and the Los Lunas Escadrille, which met weekly in his hangar at Mid Valley Airpark. At the time of his death, Tom held the oldest Air Frame and Engine (A & E) Mechanics' certificate in New Mexico, having obtained it in 1946.
In addition to his wife of 55 years, Mary Jo, Tom is survived by his mother, Rev. Mable E. Dawe, Pastor of Faith Chapel; his son, Tom and his wife, Melinda Dawe of Albuquerque; a daughter, Mitzi and her husband, Rick Hobson of Corrales; and son, Kevin (KC) Dawe and Kathy Allen Dawe of New Jersey. In addition, Tom is survived by four grandchildren, Ian Tyler, Kevin and Jacob Dawe.

Cynthia Ann Divett, 42, a ten year resident of Tijeras, NM passed away Friday, August 6, 1999. She was born December 30, 1956 in Topeka, KS to Richard and Ann (Gunther) Burgard. On September 26, 1989 she married Thomas B. Divett in Estancia, NM. Mrs. Divett was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints Church in Edgewood, NM. She was very active in the church and Sunday school and was a member of the Relief Society at the Church. She will be remembered as a loving daughter, wife, mother and friend. Cynthia is survived by her parents, Richard and Ann Burgard; her husband, Thomas B. Divett; two daughters, Michelle and Nicole Stegman; one step-daughter, Sarah Divett; three step-sons, Thomas Jr., Jared and Samuel Divett; one brother, Greg Burgard; and two sisters, Linda Tovrea and Debbie Wessel. She will lie in state Tuesday, August 10, 1999 at 12:00 noon at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints in Edgewood, NM. A Funeral Service will be held Tuesday, August 10, 1999 at 2:00 p.m. with Dale S. Preece officiating, also at the church. Burial will follow at the Mountain Valley Cemetery in Edgewood, NM. Robert L. Duran, 45, a resident of Albuquerque, passed away Friday, August 6, 1999 in a local hospital. Robert was a parishioner of Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church. He is survived by his parents, Louis and Natalie Duran; six brothers, Joe Duran and wife, Liz, Daniel Duran, Michael Duran, Manuel Duran, Henry Duran and Tony Duran and wife, Judy; four sisters, Elsie Muller and husband, Frankie, Diana Pacheco and husband, Arturo, Angela Duran and Loretta Garcia and husband, Gregario of Hernandez, N.M. Also surviving are his Godchildren, Louis Duran Jr., Inez Duran and Lorenzo Duran. Visitations will be held today from 2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. and 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. in the Chapel of Garcia Mortuary, on the corner of 8th and Iron, where a Rosary will be recited at 7:00 p.m. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Tuesday morning at 10:00 a.m. at Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church. Daniel J. Faulkner, 63, a resident of Albuquerque for 22 years, died Friday, August 5, 1999. He is survived by his children, Daniel J. Faulkner, Jr. and wife, JoAnn V. of Ft. Worth, TX, Debbie Klug and husband, Brad, Donald J. Faulkner and wife, Diane, both of Rio Rancho, and Deana J. Faulkner of Albuquerque; grandchildren Zac Valenzuela of Albuquerque, Chad, Amber and Erynne Klug of Rio Rancho, Drew, Chelsea, Morgan, and Ashley Faulkner, all of Rio Rancho; great-grandchildren, Naomi, Zac Jr., and Angel Valenzuela of Albuquerque; brothers, Billy Faulkner, Bobby Faulkner, Mickey Faulkner, Ronnie Faulkner, Donnie Faulkner, Jimmy Faulkner, Tommy Faulkner; sisters, Betty Conde, Nancy Baker, and Helen Sperling, all of New Jersey; and ex-wife, Rose Marie Faulkner. Mary Jane Jagunich, 59, a resident of Albuquerque since 1963, passed away, Friday, August 6, 1999. She is survived by her husband, Joe Jagunich of the family home; sons, Paul Jagunich of Baltimore, MD and Michael Jagunich of Albuquerque; daughter, Sharon O'Neill and husband, Mike of Albuquerque; and her three precious grandchildren, Gunnar, Zachary and Christopher. They were her greatest joy. Mary Jane is also survived by her brothers, Steve and wife, Doris of Whitinsville, MA, Nick and wife, Ione, Jack and wife, Anna, all of Eveleth, MN, Joe and wife, Rozanne of St. Cloud, MN and Jim and wife, Donna of Eveleth, MN; and sister, Cathleen and husband, Bob of Coon Rapids, MN. Mary Jane was born July 16, 1940 in Eveleth, MN to Steve and Catherine (Zalac) Pollack, who preceded her in death. She was also preceded in death by her sister, Matilda of Illinois; and brother, Thomas of Minnesota. Mary Jane was employed by the Albuquerque Public Schools for 19 years. She was a loving wife, and caring mother and grandmother. Mary Jane was surrounded by many true and wonderful friends. She will be deeply missed by all that knew her and those whose lives she touched. Robert Lohr, 61, a native of Joplin, MO and a resident of Albuquerque, died Thursday, August 5, 1999. He is survived by his wife of 38 years, Camille C. Lohr; daughters, Sabina Lohr of Manchester, CT and Stacey Lohr of Albuquerque; son, Dr. David T. Lohr and his wife, Dr. Alissa Lohr of Colorado Springs, CO; granddaughter, Sydney Renee Lohr; mother, Jean Lohr; sisters, Rosalie Houk and Carol Marvin; aunt, Doris Glover; and many other family and friends. Mr. Lohr was a loving, hard working father and best friend to his wife. He enjoyed travel through the great outdoors and he was a big fan of baseball. Henry A. Lovato, age 83, born July 12, 1916, died peacefully at home Thursday morning, August 5, 1999. A life long resident of Albuquerque, he is survived by his wife, Jane; daughter, Doris Lovato; son, Henry Anthony Lovato II and wife, Carla; his other daughter, Susan Sanders and her husband, GE; by loving grandchildren, Karen Lovato, Brandon and Colt Sanders, other grandchildren, Paul Martinez, Marleen Quintana and husband, Arnold; and great-granddaughter, Savannah; a brother, Fred Lovato and wife, Frances; and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Frances in 1978. A survivor of the Bataan Death March, he was a prisoner of war for 42 months during World War II. He was a member of the 111th Calvary, 200th Coast Artillery; American Defenders of Bataan and Corregidor; American Ex-POW's, VFW and DAV. He was awarded numerous medals including the Bronze Star and Purple Heart. Honorary Pallbearers are Karen Lovato, GE, Brandon and Colt Sanders, Ralph Rodriguez, Leo Padilla and Agapito Silva. Renee Lucero, age 45, a resident of Big Bear, California and longtime resident of Albuquerque, died Thursday, August 5, 1999. She is survived by husband, Don Tapia; mother, Virginia Lucero; son, Ramon Gallegos; brothers, Chris, Glen, Boni and wife, Milly, Clifford and wife, Karen and Ernest; niece and nephews, Tammy, Steve, Robert, Matthew, Marcos, Kiko and Paul; stepkids, Todd, Tommy, Mike and Donna Tapia. Renee was recently preceded in death by her father, Chris Lucero and niece, Lynnae Lucero. Services are pending.

Rose B. Lujan, a resident of Albuquerque, passed away Friday, August 6, 1999. She is survived by her daughter, Yvonne Johnson and husband, Douglas; sons, Robert and Ralph Lujan; sisters, Stella Valencia, Amalia Martinez, Ermalinda Herrera and husband, Joe; sisters-in-law, Emma Gomez and Frances Gomez; brother, Elfego Gomez, Jr. and wife, Elsie; grandchildren, Brian and Hayley Johnson. Mrs. Lujan was preceded in death by her husband, Silverio Lujan, her parents, Elfego and Candelarita Gomez. A Rosary will be recited Wednesday, August 11, 1999 at 9:30 a.m. at St. Therese Little Flower Church, 300 Mildred Ave. NW, Albuquerque. Mass will follow the Rosary at 10:00 a.m. with Father John Plans as Celebrant. Carol McIlroy, 75, a resident of Albuquerque for 48 years, died Tuesday, August 3, 1999. She is survived by her son, David McIlroy and wife, Karen of Eagle River, AK; daughters, Jennifer Ricker and husband, Fred of Westchester, CA and Cathy Gamblin and husband, Jim of Albuquerque; grandchildren, Chris and Scott McIlroy and Kelsey and Collin Ricker; and sister-in-law, Valeria Farmer of Albuquerque. She was preceded in death by her husband, Homer C. McIlroy in 1992. Mrs. McIlroy was a member of Montgomery Blvd. Church of Christ. She was very active in the art community of Albuquerque for over 40 years. Services will be held Monday, 7:00 p.m., at Montgomery Blvd. Church of Christ, 7201 Montgomery Blvd. NE, with Bruce T. Thweatt, Minister, officiating. Interment will take place Wednesday, 10:00 a.m., at the Stroud Creek Cemetery in Tolar, TX. Richard "Doc" L. Peterson, D.V.M., 67, a resident of Santa Fe since 1969, died Saturday, July 31, 1999. He was born in Webster, South Dakota, on January 28, 1932, the son of Elta Laughlin and Theodore Peterson. He married Karen Lou Howard on February 15, 1958. His sister, Jeanne Peterson preceded him in death, in February 1963. He served in the United States Army from 1952-1955 in the Mule Corps and as a Medical Technician. He graduated from Colorado State University at Ft. Collins, Colorado in 1963 with a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine. He established the Solana Veterinary Clinic in 1969, followed by the St. Francis Animal Clinic. He was an active member of the Veterinary community, acting as a lobbyist in the state legislature. He was awarded the Veterinarian of the Year in 1989 for his efforts. He was an avid fly fisherman and would recommend you use a bead-head nymph #14 at Stone Lake. He is survived by his three children, Rebecca L. Peterson of San Miguel de Allende, GTO, Mexico, Geoffrey A. Peterson (Shannon Marshall) currently of El Paso, TX, and Strom H. Peterson (Maria Montalvo) of Albuquerque. In lieu of flowers, please make contributions to Santa Fe Animal Shelter and Humane Society, 1920 Cerrillos Road, Santa Fe, New Mexico 87505. Interment took place at the Santa Fe National Cemetery on Wednesday, August 4 at 2:00 p.m. followed by an open mike memorial happy hour at Tiny's Lounge, next to St. Francis Animal Clinic. Family and many friends, especially those at table #21, will sadly miss him.

Joy L. Ray, 69, a resident of Albuquerque since 1965, died Saturday, August 7, 1999. She is survived by her husband of 43 years, Bobby J. Ray; sons, Michael T. Ray and wife, Lynn and Mark S. Ray and wife, Bobbie, all of Albuquerque; and five grandchildren. Services will be held Tuesday, 1:00 p.m. at French Mortuary, University Blvd. Chapel, 1111 University Blvd. NE. Jenny Salazar-Lagunas went to the arms of the Lord on Thursday, August 5, 1999 at the age of 60. She was very active in the American Legion Auxiliary; Unit 100 President, 1993-1996; Trophies and Awards Department Chairman, 1993-1994; Ann Ellis Department Chairman, 1995-1996; District 9 Secretary/Treasurer, 1995-1996; District 9 Vice-President, 1996-1997. She was at present a member of Unit 13 in which she served as Unit President, 1997-1999, Constitution & Bylaws Department Chairman, 1999-Present. She was also very active with the New Mexico Commission on the Status of Women. She is survived by her daughter, Donna Martinez and husband, Arthur; her sons, George Anthony Salazar and wife, Bernice, Gilbert Salazar and Robert Salazar; her sister, Josie Gonzales and husband, Romeo, her brothers, Andy Chavez and Toby Chavez; grandchildren, Eric, Vanessa, Nichole, Sarka and Bo Martinez, David and Bennie Salazar, Valerie, Shantae and Elijah Salazar, and Robert Jr; great-grandchildren, Daisia Martinez and Querida Salazar; mother-in-law, Julia Lopez. She is also survived by many aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces, nephews and many friends. She was proceeded in death by her husband, Ernesto Lagunas; her sister-in-law, Suzie Chavez; and her mother, Lupe Chavez. Rosary will be held Tuesday, August 10, at 7:30 p.m. and Memorial Services will be held Wednesday, August 11 at 11:00 a.m. at St. Therese Catholic Church, 300 Mildred Ave NW. The American Legion Auxiliary will present their colors at the Memorial. Arrangements by Direct Funeral Services 343-8008, 2919 4th NW.

Mitchell S. "Mitch" Sinks passed away on Thursday, August 5, 1999, at the age of 55, after a year-long battle with cancer. He is survived by his wife of 17 1/2 years, Judi; stepson, Steven J. Westman, both of Albuquerque; daughter, Paula Fox; granddaughter, Alex Ward; two brothers, Eugene "Bo" Sinks and wife, Jenny and Howard "H.K." Sinks and wife, Carla, all of Oregon; sister, Maxine Pepperdine of California; his beloved Aunt Judy and husband, Ray Murphy of Oregon; many nieces and nephews; and sister-in-law, Marj Miller of Texas. Mitch leaves behind many friends and neighbors who meant the world to him; and his "babies" Heather and Hannah, his faithful Scotties, who he loved dearly. He owned and operated Mitch's Power Wash for a number of years. There will be a gathering Sunday, August 29, 1999, 2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. at Mitch and Judi's home, to celebrate Mitch's life. Should friends desire, memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society, 5800 Lomas Blvd. NE, 87110 or the Rio Grande Zoo, 903 10th Street SW, 87102. Robert M. Dixon, 67, of St. Thomas, U.S.V.I. and Muscle Shoals, died Wednesday, August 2, 2000. He was a graduate of the U.S. Naval Academy and the University of New Mexico School of Law. After a career in the Air Force, he practiced Law for 15 years in Albuquerque and then, with his wife, started and ran a wonderful business in St. Thomas, U.S.V.I. He is survived by his wife, Julia Slack Dixon of Muscle Shoals; and sons, William Buck Dixon and Kevin Dixon, both of Orange Beach, AL, Cameron Dixon and wife, Tanya Dixon of Bryan, TX; granddaughters, Cassandra and Nicole Dixon, Miranda Hale, all of Bryan, TX, Daniela Dixon; and great-granddaughter, Laura Ashley Dixon, both of Albuquerque. Bob felt that he was blessed with wonderful in-laws, and a devoted wife and family. God's grace surely did shine on Bob. Memorial and burial service to be held at a later date at St. Thomas, U.S.V.I. The family requests that memorials may be made to Hospice of the Shoals, 1108 Bradshaw Drive, Florence, AL 35630.
