FLORA V. VIARRIAL
Age 70, a resident of The Pueblo of Pojoaque, passed away on Thursday, January 4, 2007 following a long illness. She was preceded in death by her parents; Juan B. and Bonifacia Lopez, sons; Robert, David, Leroy and Ben Viarrial Jr.; daughter, Gloria Viarrial; Great-granddaughter, Amorita Gallegos; brothers, Santiago, Tobias and Liborio Lopez; sister, Belen LeDeaux; in-laws, Fermin and Feliciana Viarrial; brothers-in-law, Governor Jake Viarrial, Margarito and Gabriel Viarrial; sisters-in-law; Frances and Maria Inez Viarrial and other relatives. Mrs. Viarrial was a resident of the Pueblo of Pojoaque for 54 years and was originally of Ranchitos. She retired as Director of CHR Program for the Pueblo of Pojoaque of which she was instrumental in its creation. Flora and her husband Ben were volunteer EMT’s for the Nambe Ambulance. Flora was a founding member of the Pueblo of Pojoaque Traditions, embroidering and making the attire for her family by hand for all the Pueblo festivities. She is survived by her husband; Ben Viarrial; children; Gabriella “Gaby” Viarrial, Betty Jean Viarreal, Annette Hooper and husband Tommy and Joseph Viarrial all of Pojoaque; sisters, Epimenia Medina and husband Teofilo of La Villita, Clara Saiz and husband Arthur of Colorado, Juanita Martinez of Chimayo and Rosita Esquibel of Albuquerque; Ben and Flora also raised 7 other children, Jeff, Gabriel, Juanita, Rosita, Tommy, Nelson and Rhoda; 19 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren and numerous other relatives and friends. The family of Flora V. Viarrial has entrusted her funeral arrangements to DeVargas Funeral Home of the Española Valley.

Terry L. Gallegos
Age 47, a resident of Arroyo Seco passed away on Sunday, January 7, 2007. He was preceded in death by his son, Carlos Gallegos; brothers, Jerry and Dwayne Gallegos; God parents, Abedon and Inez Arellano; mother-in-law, Amelia V. Martinez; father-in-law, Tony Martinez. Terry is survived by his wife, Jeanette Gallegos; son, Jerry Gallegos both of Arroyo Seco; brothers, Roddy R. Gallegos of Hernandez, Bobby Gallegos and companion Cindy of Hernandez; sister, Cathy Padilla and husband Frankie of Hernandez; mother, Mary Martinez and Andres also of Hernandez; father, Carlos Gallegos and Romelia of Farmington and beloved in-laws, many aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and other relatives and friends. ESTHER ANN MORALES
Age 59, a resident of Española, passed away on Monday, January 8, 2007 following a lengthy illness. She was preceded in death by her parents, Moises and Benancia Atencio; sisters, Minerva Archuleta and Delilah Atencio; brother, Umberto Atencio; sons, Moises Morales Jr. and Willie R. Morales. Esther is survived by her children, Roberto Morales and wife Melissa of Española, Minerva Jaramillo and husband Steve of Rio Rancho and Beto Morales of Española; brothers and sisters, Juan Atencio and wife Trinnie of Chimayo, Rose Valdez and husband Juan of Canjilon, Jose Atencio and wife Irene of Albuquerque, Amada Rodrigez and husband Ray of Taos and Larry Atencio of Canjilon; grandchildren, Roberto Jr., Monty, Moises, Samuel, David and Isaiah Morales, Melinda Mitchell and husband Patricio, Jonathan Velarde and wife Danielle, Amanda Velarde, Willie, Ryan, Natasha and Angel Morales; great-grandchildren, Isaiah and Aliana Mitchell, Angelica Velarde and numerous other relatives and friends. Lucas R. Velasquez – Age 83
A resident of White Rock passed away of natural causes on Tuesday, January 9, 2007. He was preceded in death by his son, Ronnie Velasquez and parents, Jose and Adelina Vargas. Lucas was know for his family band the “Sunsetters”. He was a very proud veteran who was always available for funeral detail. Lucas also worked for the Los Alamos National Laboratory as a Machinist for 34 years. He served in the Army during the WWII era. He was active in the Japan and Guada Canal Theatre with the 37th Infantry Division. He is survived by his wife, Charlotte Velasquez of White Rock; oldest daughter, Sandee McDaid of White Rock, Leni Smith and husband David of Los Alamos, Carla Rambeau and husband Don of San Diego, CA; son, Alex Velasquez and fiancé Marquita of Arroyo Seco; 11 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren. The family of Lucas R. Velasquez have entrusted his funeral arrangements to DeVargas Funeral Home of the Espanola Valley.

GILBERT A. VIGIL
Age 75, a resident of Española, passed away on Tuesday, January 9, 2007. He was preceded in death by his son, Robert A. Vigil; parents, Placido and Regina Vigil; brother, Placido Jr.; sisters, Louise Vigil and Virginia Vigil. Gilbert is survived by his wife of 48 years, Laura Vigil of Española; daughter, Francine Vigil and husband Brian Dwyer of Albuquerque; son, Kenneth G. Vigil and companion Sandra Gonzales of Española; daughter-in-law, Corina G. Vigil of Española; grandchildren, Jeremy, Nathan, Janeen, Kenneth and Matthew Vigil and Sean Dwyer; sister, Isabel Martinez of Albuquerque; sisters-in-law, Theresa Fulgenzi and husband Charlie of Las Vegas, Helen Gonzales and husband Bob of Las Cruces; nephews and nieces, Martin Ray Martinez, Robert Gatti, Nina Castañeda, Greg Gatti, John Vigil, Christopher Vigil, Susan Keller and numerous other relatives and friends. BASIL C. DRAKE
Age 86, a resident of Santa Cruz, passed away on Friday, January 5, 2007. He was preceded in death by his son, David Basil Drake; brothers, Ronald and Donald Drake; sister, Janice Drake and parents, Sylvester and Dura Belle Drake. Basil was a WWII Veteran, serving in the U.S. Navy and was the youngest chief in WWII.. He was a member of the Eagles since 1949, a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars and a mine safety instructor in Juneau Alaska. He also worked for Pacific Gas Transmission Company for 20 years in Sand Point, Idaho. For 15 years he was a sawmill manager. Basil is survived by his wife of 64 years, Darleen Drake of Santa Cruz; children, Carolyn Ortega and husband Jose of Santa Cruz, Jeannette Seale and husband Joe of Alaska, Deanna Johnson and husband Jim of Washington, Galen E. Drake and wife Mai Ping of Alaska and many grandchildren and great-grandchildren and numerous other relatives and friends. The family of Basil C. Drake has entrusted his funeral arrangements to DeVargas Funeral Home of the Española Valley.

Joe Valdez - Age 77
From Chimayo currently residing in Dixon passed away on Sunday, January 14, 2007. He was preceded in death by his parents; Jacobo and Bernabe Valdez; daughter, Lucy Trujillo; son-in-law, Pablo Trujillo; brother-in-law, Fidel Martinez; sister-in-law, Emilia Martinez. Joe retired from the Los Alamos National Laboratory after 30 years of service. He always enjoyed spending time with his family and grandkids. He will be greatly missed by his family that was at his side. He is survived by his wife, Fedelina Valdez of Dixon; 2 step-daughters, Josie Medina and husband Clarence who cared for him until his death, also of Dixon and Filomena Martinez of San Pedro; grandson whom he raised, Dennis Trujillo of San Pedro; grandkids who were constantly at his side, LaVerne, Clarence, Freddie and Michelle Medina and Michelle Sanchez all of Dixon; sister, Daisy Madrid of Las Vegas, NV; 4 daughters, Mary Ann, Noel, Priscilla and Linda Valdez; son-in-law, Daniel Martinez of Chamita; numerous other grandchildren and many other relatives and friends. The following will assist the family as pallbearers, Freddie, Clarence and Frankie Medina, Dennis, Percy and Nelson Trujillo. Jose L. Gallegos - Age 93
A resident of the Espanola Nursing and Rehabilitation Center passed away of natural causes on Friday, January 12, 2007. He was preceded in death by his mother and father, Delfinio and Francisquita Gallegos; his wife, Maria Lucia Gallegos; and brothers, Jose Pedro and Lorenzo Gallegos. Mr. Gallegos was a member of the Community of Abiquiu. He was a sheep herder and would travel to Utah, Colorado and Wyoming. Mr. Gallegos would bus tables at Matildas and the Super Spoon restaurants. He is survived by his sons, Eloy D., Teodoro and wife Cipriana and Sambran Gallegos all of Abiquiu; grandchildren, Sorya, Andres, Silvestre, Teodoro Jr., Lucio, Claudia, Cynthia, Guadalupe, Patricia and Adan Gallegos; great-grandchildren, Eric, Angel, Brenda, Jacob, Perla and Jasmine. The family of Jose L. Gallegos have placed their trust in DeVargas Funeral Home of the Espanola Valley.

ANTHONY R. GRIEGO JR.
Age 57, a resident of Española, passed away unexpectedly on Monday, January 15, 2007. He was preceded in death by his mother, Rose Atencio Griego; son, Anthony Tonito Griego; brothers, Johnny, Frankie, Tony, Patty and Orlando Mora and sister, Sally Martinez. Anthony worked for Santa Fe Law Enforcement and was Captain for the Rio Arriba Sheriffs Department. He also worked as a bus driver for many years for the Rio Arriba County Schools and recently retired from the Rio Arriba County. Anthony is survived by his wife, Beatrice Griego of Española; father, Antonio Griego of Tesuque; sister, Christella Anaya of San Jose California; brother, Adolpho Mora of Las Vegas, NM; daughter, Deniece Griego Martinez and husband Raymond of Santa Fe; son, Orlando Griego of Española and Anthony J. Griego of Santa Fe and many other grandchildren, nieces, nephews and other family and friends. Serving as pallbearers, Abie Romero, Leonard Ocuna, Eric Salazar, Delbert Sanchez, Mark Anaya and Lance Martinez. Genaro “Jerry” Lazaro Maestas
Age 67, a resident of Upper San Pedro passed away on Tuesday, January 16, 2007 following a lengthy illness. He was preceded in death by his parents, Luis and Benigna Maestas; brothers, Frank and Simon Maestas; sisters, Ernestina Montoya and Isabel Blea; beloved nephews, Joseph Polaco and Michael Roybal. Genaro was retired from LANL after 28 years of service. He was very active at Holy Cross Catholic Church. He adored his family and spending time with his family who will miss him greatly. He also loved working in his garden and always had his yard looking nice. He is survived by his wife Flora Maestas of San Pedro; son, Jerry Maestas of Albuquerque; daughters, Barbara Tubb of Santa Fe and Mary Beth Maestas of Arlington, Virginia; grandchildren, Ashlee Tubb and Tomas Martinez of Ojo Caliente, Nicholas Tubb of Seattle, Washington; sisters, Mary Naranjo, Sally Roybal and husband Ted all of San Pedro; brother, Phil Maestas and wife Cathy of San Diego, California; also survived by several nieces, nephews, and other relatives and friends. Serving as pallbearers, Kino Quintana, Andy Steck, Gene Salazar, Mike Montoya, Dominic Roybal and Larry Naranjo. Robert P. Lovato - Age 82
A resident of Espanola, born and raised in Las Vegas, New Mexico and Veteran of WWII passed away on Wednesday, January 17, 2007 following a short illness. He was preceded in death by his parents, Pedro and Pauline Lovato; wife, Mary A. Lovato; brothers, Solomon, Trinidad and Andy Lovato. He is survived by his children, son, Robert and wife Louise Lovato of Espanola; daughters, Yolanda and husband Albert Sanchez of Chimayo, Evelyn and husband George Holin of Denver, Colorado; grandchildren, Nathaniel and Makayla Sanchez, Robby and Bobbie Jo Lovato and great-grandchild Chelsea Lovato; brother, Benny Lovato of Albuquerque, sisters, Genevieve Roberts, Lena Apodaca of Albuquerque and Bridget Medina of Las Vegas, NM; brothers and sisters-in-law, Robert and Neva Montoya of Santa Fe, Arthur and Marie Montoya of Las Vegas, NM., and special friend Minnie Archuleta of Espanola and numerous nephews, nieces, cousins and other relatives and friends. Age 84, a resident of California and formerly of El Llano, passed away on Sunday, January 14, 2007. She was preceded in death by her daughter, Yolanda Gonzales; parents, Anjelita and Sotero Olivas; brothers, Ernesto, Sirenio and Ramon Olivas; son-in-law, Frank Vasquez. Martinez; parents Ramon & Librada Martinez; daughter, Laura Martinez. Ramon was a member of la Sociedad de la Santisima Trinidad de Santa Cruz. He is survived by his wife, Maria L. Martinez of Coral de Piedra; son, Andy O. Martinez of La Puebla; daughter, Julie Martinez of Coral de Piedra; grandchildren; Crystal Martinez and boyfriend Leo Maestas of Coral de Piedra, Deena Martinez and boyfriend Jonathan Manges, of Coral de Piedra, Andrew Martinez of La Puebla; twin brother, Alfonso Martinez and wife Rumalda, of Riverside; brothers, Robert Martinez and wife Grace of Espanola, Jose Ben Martinez and wife Susie of Las Cruces; sisters, Eliza Lopez of San Pedro, Lillian Romero of Espanola, Clorinda Martinez, Martha Martinez and Julia Ortiz all of El Guache, Lucille Maestas and husband Eloy of Colorado, numerous nephews, nieces and other relatives and friends. JULIO GONZALES
Age 89, a resident of EL Rancho, passed away on Sunday, January 21, 2007 following a lengthy illness. He was preceded in death by his parents, Estanislado and Vicenta Gonzales; brothers, Dolores and Carmen Gonzales; sisters, Corine Ortiz, Mary Duran, Juanita Duet, Irene Serna and Ramona Gonzales. Julio was a carpenter and locksmith with the Zia Company for 35 years. He was also a charter member of the Knights of Columbus. His hobbies included many wood working projects for his family. He was also an avid hunter fisherman and gardener. Julio is survived by his wife, Carmen Gonzales of El Rancho; son, David Gonzales and wife Judy of White Rock; daughters, Angie Romero and husband Pete of Nambe, Louella Kissane and husband Richard of White Rock and Margaret Sanchez and husband Augustine of Española; brother, Joe Gonzales and wife Tillie; sister, Clara Salazar and husband Zeke; grandchildren, Mark and Andrea Gonzales, Carrie and Jonathan Atencio, Dave and Louie Romero, Mike and Neil Kissane and James Sanchez; great-grandchildren, Travis, Katlyn and Zachery Gonzales and Elena and Ashley Atencio and numerous other relatives and friends.
