JIM EVANS – Age 74
A resident of Abiquiu, passed away on Thursday, January 18, 2007 following a lengthy illness. He was preceded in death by his parents, Lloyd and Opal Evans; son, Lloydray Evans and sisters, Juanita and Olita. Jim was a very hard worker who would have worked 7 days out of the week if he could. He was a very good father and excellent grandfather who would always provide for his family. He will be greatly missed by his family. Jim is survived by his wife, Louise Evans of Abiquiu; children, Aubrey Evans of Abiquiu, Debbie Carrillo and husband Charles of Santa Fe and Ricky Evans of Texas; sisters, Shirley and Linda; brother, Charles of Texas; grandchildren, Estrellita Carrillo-Garcia and husband Larry, Roan Carrillo, Danielray Evans and Ryan Chacon; great-grandchild, Larry Angel Garcia and numerous other relatives, nieces, nephews and friends. Cremation has taken place. The family of Jim Evans has entrusted his cremation arrangements to DeVargas Funeral Home of the Española Valley.

FRANCES M. MONTOYA
Age 98, a resident of Nambe, New Mexico passed away on Friday, January 26, 2007. She was preceded in death by her husband, Ramon L. Montoya; son, Jose Leroy Montoya; daughter, Mary Roybal; parents, Nabor and Celestina Maestas; grandchildren, Steve Montoya, Lourdes Valdez and Ursula Duran; sisters, Dolores and Onofre. Frances was a very humble, loving and joyous person who had a wonderful sense of humor. She will be missed dearly by her family. She is survived by her sons, Jose Benito and wife Lorraine of Nambe, Ramon Ignacio and wife Socorro of Santa Fe, and Michael Alfonso Montoya of Nambe; daughter, Fernanda Giron and husband Guadalupe of Pojoaque; 2 sisters, Estella Quintana and husband George of Nambe, and Basilia Hofflinger of Kansas; son-in-law, Luis Roybal and daughter-in-law Virginia Montoya both of Nambe; numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren and numerous other relatives, cousins, nephews, nieces and friends also survive her. The family of Frances M. Montoya has entrusted her funeral arrangements to DeVargas Funeral Home of the Espanola Valley.

JUAN ANTONIO OCAñA
Age 103, a resident of El Rito, passed away on Sunday, January 28, 2007. He was preceded in death by his parents, Cristino and Sofia Ocaña; wife, Camila Ocaña; daughter, Ascencion Valdez and Ortancia Saliz; grandson, Anthony Archuleta, David Herrera, Elmer Martinez, Kenneth Martinez, James Archuleta, John Jaramillo; granddaughters, Michelle Valdez and Camille Archuleta, Valerie Martinez, Tracy Martinez, Teresita Archuleta and Adrianna Martinez. Mr. Ocaña worked for 33 years at El Rito School and retired in 1968. He was a rancher and sheep hearder who raised cows, sheep and chickens and loved to fish. Juan is survived by his son, Cosme Ocaña and wife MaryAnn of Sanford, Colorado; daughters, Sofie Archuleta, Elizada Martinez and husband Fred, Soraida Herrera and companion Sef Garcia and Frances Archuleta and husband Ted all of El Rito; grandchildren raised by him, Lucille and Michael Valdez; grandchildren, Becky, Geraldine, Carol, Carla, Cosme Jr., Lovie, Alice, Randy and Sam, Patsy, Joe, LeRoy, Dennis, Sylviano, Lulu, Vangie, Darlene, Herman, Rudy, Pauline, Johnny, Emilio, Julie, Mary Kay, Levie, Linda, Lisa, Alexandria, Maxine, Donna, Larry and many great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren and other family and friends. Serving as pallbearers, Eric, Leon, Rick and Sammy Archuleta, Silviano Martinez, Larry Jaramillo, Cosme Ocaña Jr., Michael Valdez and Rudy Herrera. Age 40, a resident of Dixon passed away unexpectedly on Friday, January 26, 2007. She was preceded in death by her husband, Arthur Martinez of Ojo Sarco; father, Jose Sandoval of Cordova; grandmother, Alice Lopez of Dixon; grandparents, Remijo and Juanita; uncles, Wille Narciso and Abigail Sandoval of Cordova; God mother, Connie Sandoval of Rio Chiquito; step-father, Leo Armijo of Ojo Sarco; aunt, Evelyne of Penasco. Elaine is survived by her mother, Lena Sandoval of Dixon; children, Jessica Montoya and husband Joey of Taos, Kevin Martinez and companion Ashley Padillla of Hernandez, Maureen Armijo and companion Manuel Lopez of Chamisal, Noberto and Brandie Armijo both of Chamisal; grandchildren, Brettney, Alijah, and Zachariah Montoya, Evany and Quianna Martinez; brothers and sisters, Frankie Lopez and wife Juliet of Chamisal, Joey Sandoval of Dixon, Kenny Sandoval and companion Jessica of Vadito, Lee Ann Sandoval and companion Earl Martinez of Velarde, and Melissa Armijo of Dixon; God daughter, Allison Doreen Lopez of Chamisal; grandfather, Nick Lopez of Rockyford; very special aunt, Debbie Romero and husband Romaldo Romero and many other nieces, nephews, aunts and uncles. Gilbert B. Herrera
Age 60, a resident of Chamita passed away on Saturday, January 27, 2007 following a short illness. He was preceded in death by his mother, Vivianita Herrera; grandmother who raised him, Anita Herrera; Infant daughter; Infant grandson; mother-in-law, Eufemia Martinez; grandfather, Benjamin Herrera; Infant sister. Gilbert loved to play basketball. He was very active with the Chamita Fire Department. He loved hunting and being in the outdoors. He loved all sports in general. He was a huge Lakers fan. He loved his job at P.T.L.A putting in 24 years of dedication. He also served in the United States Navy. He was a great husband being married to Marcella for 40 years, a great father, brother and friend. He is survived by his wife Marcella A. Herrera of Chamita; son, Jimmy Herrera and wife Kimberly of El Llano; sisters, Sylvia Herrera and husband Marty of La Villita, Esther Trujillo and husband Mark of El Rancho; aunt who helped raise Gilbert, Flora Herrera and companion, Jose Gallegos of La Villita; brother, Robert Herrera and wife Ida of La Mesilla; brothers, Ben Herrera and wife Lorraine of Espanola, David Herrera of Espanola; brother-in-law, Lorenzo Martinez and wife Rebecca of Canjilon; sisters-in-law, Julia Garcia and husband Augustine of Espanola, Flora Garcia of Canjilon, Sally Montano also of Canjilon; God son, Gabriel Trujillo of El Rancho; God daughter, Debbie Gonzales of Ojo Caliente; numerous nieces, nephews, and many other relatives and friends. JOSE “JOE” ELIAS MARTINEZ
Age 79, a resident of Cuarteles, was called home to our heavenly Father on January 26, 2007. Jose died peacefully at the family home after a long and courageous battle with Parkinson’s disease. He was preceded in death by his son, Larry Michael Martinez; parents, Adan and Elisa Martinez of Espanola; brothers, Ramon Tito Martinez and wife Ruperta, Henry Martinez and wife Margie, Tony V. Martinez and Elias Martinez; sisters, Aurora Martinez and Federico, Josie Martinez Garcia and husband Milton, Sally Herrera and husband Bernabe, Ruby Rubideaux and husband Jose M., Ernestine Mitchell and husband Ben, and many nieces and nephews and also preceded in death by Father and Mother-in-law: Alejandro and Eloisa Esquibel of Cuarteles. Jose and his wife Dora were devoted esclavos of the Sangre De Cristo Chapel in Cuarteles for 50 years. Joe and Dora were married at La Iglesia De Santa Cruz De La Canada on June 23, 1951 and remained devoted parishioners of that Church the rest of his life. Joe was a veteran of the United States Army and served in Germany on security detail shortly after World War II. When he returned home, Joe continued his education at Coin Electrical School in Chicago, Ill. where he became a certified electrician. He worked for the Atomic Energy Commission and the Los Alamos National Laboratory in the badge office for over 30 years. After retiring from the AEC he worked as a security inspector for Mason and Hanger, guarding the Los Alamos National Laboratory. Joe was a devoted family man and his family always came first in his life. He was a loving husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather. Joe is survived by his loving wife of 55 years, Aurora (Dora) Esquibel Martinez of Cuarteles; sons, Ronald J. Martinez and wife Doreen, Archie C. Martinez and his wife Soledad, Joe Mark Martinez and Adam L. Martinez and wife Susan all of Cuartelez; grandchildren, LouAnna, Ronald, Monica and Lorenzo Martinez, Amanda Martinez and companion Steve, Nicole Martinez and companion Ben, Arthur Martinez, Justin Maestas, Adan Martinez, and Elias Martinez and great grandchild Gabriel Sanchez and sister-in-law Anita Martinez of Espanola and many other relatives and friends. The following will serve as pallbearers, Ronald J. Martinez, Archie Martinez, Joe Mark Martinez, Adam Martinez, Ronald K. Martinez, and Justin Maestas. CONNIE N. GOMEZ
Age 60 a resident of El Rancho, passed away on Sunday, January 28, 2007 after a lengthy illness. She was preceded in death by her husband, Felipe Gomez; parents, Leandro and Rosa Lucero; brothers, Frank, Tony and Benny Lucero; grandfather, Francisco M. Lucero. Connie was active in helping at the community center in El Rancho. She loved to sing and write poetry. She had a great personality and loved to make people laugh. She is survived by 2 brothers, Leandro Lucero Jr. and wife Mela of San Antonio, NM and Joe T. Lucero and companion Julia Martinez of El Rancho. She was also survived by many nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. The family of Connie N. Gomez has entrusted her cremation arrangements to DeVargas Funeral Home of the Espanola Valley.

SERAFIN L. MONTOYA
Age 65, a resident of Santa Fe and formerly of Española, passed away on Sunday, January 28, 2007 after a lengthy illness. He was preceded in death by his parents, Melisendro and Leocadia Montoya; son, Eddie Montoya; son, Amador and Larry Montoya; in-laws, Apolonio and Lugardita Barela; his wife’s grandfather whom he loved very much, Amador Fernandez and brother-in-law, Levi Chavez. Serafin was a great father, husband and grandfather who worked hard to provide for his family. He was always dedicated to any job that he had and would always show up early. Serafin was a good man who will be missed dearly by his family. He loved to work in the yard and would find something to do if there was nothing to do. Serafin is survived by his wife, Flor Barela of Santa Fe; children, Jerry Montoya, Apolonio Montoya and wife Crystal, Lucaria Montoya Villegas and husband Juan Luis and Celina Montoya all of Santa Fe; grandchildren, Juanluis A. Villegas, Destiney D. Montoya, and Faith F. Montoya all of Santa Fe; brothers, Joe Montoya and wife Cecilia of Arroyo Seco, and Severo Vigil and wife Feloniz of Albuquerque; sister, Carmen Chavez de Montoya of Chimayo; sister-in-law, Rose Barela of Santa Fe and numerous nephews, nieces, cousins and other relatives and friends. CONSUELO T. GONZALES
Age 85, a resident of Chama, passed away on Tuesday, January 30, 2007. She was preceded in death by her parents, Jose Vicente and Lucia Torrez; husband, Florian Gonzales Sr.; sister, Martha Valdez and brother, David Torrez. Consuelo is survived by her son, Florian Gonzales Jr. and wife Carmen of Chama; daughter, Rosalie A. Valdez and husband Larry of Tierra Azul; grandchildren, Victoria Gonzales of Chama, Randy Gonzales and wife JoLouisa all of Chama, Amos Gonzales and wife Aimee of Albuquerque, Andres Gonzales of Chama and Christopher and Alyssa Valdez both of Tierra Azul; great-grandchildren, Brandon and Dakotah Gonzales both of Chama and Ariana and Alijah Gonzales both of Albuquerque; sisters, Mary Duran of Denver, Colorado and Lucy Martinez of Chromo, Colorado; brothers, Steven and J.V. Aaron Lee Martinez
Age 44, a resident of Velarde passed away on Wednesday, January 31, 2007. He was preceded in death by his father, Ramon Martinez; grandparents, Ramon Sr. and Elvira Martinez, Manuel Sr. and Delidia Valdez; aunt, Susie Martinez; cousin, Gilbert Valdez; and uncle, Ernesto. Sarita "Sara" Trujillo - Age 90
A resident of Lyden, N.M. entered eternal life on Friday, February 2, 2007. She was preceded in death by her husband, Manuel Trujillo; 1 son, Leroy Trujillo; 2 daughters, Celia and Cecilia Trujillo; parents, Melisendro and Ernestina Martinez. Mrs. Trujillo was a member of La Cofradia de San Jose de Lyden. She is survived by her children, Ernestina (Tina) Sargent of Santa Fe, Valentin Trujillo and wife Ignacita of Lyden, and Alfonso Trujillo and wife Selina of Chimayo and Manuelita Martinez and Joe Valdez; raised like a son, Willie Miera and wife Genevive of Albuquerque; very loving friend, Candelaria Perea and husband Clovis of Albuquerque; dear niece, Bertha Sanchez of Chamita; numerous nephews, nieces and other relatives and friends; 13 grandchildren, 11 great-grandchildren and 1 great-great-grandchild. Katie M. Garcia - Age 81
A resident of Cuyamunge passed away on Saturday, February 03, 2007 after a lengthy illness. She was preceded in death by her parents, Teodosio and Catalina Montoya; brothers, Charlie and Bill Montoya; sister and brother-in-law, Elizaida and Jerry Trujillo, Genevieve Montoya and Agustiniano Gallegos. Katie was known in the Pojoaque Valley as “Grandma Kate” a caregiver to over 100 children. She was a very active member of the Catholic Daughters and the Holy Family Society. She was also a member of the Immanuel prayer group. She was a Eucharistic minister and spiritual leader at Nuestra Señora de Guadalupe Catholic Church in Pojoaque. She is survived by her husband, Deacon Pedro Garcia; brother, Ted Montoya and wife Rose; sister, Virginia Gallegos; In-laws, Sam and Alice Garcia, Manuel and Mary Ann Garcia, and Marianna Barnes; children, Esther Artino, Leonard Garcia and wife Belle Marie and Mary Frances Gomez; grandchildren, Matthew Romero and wife Rose, Melissa Mascareñas and Patrick Sweeny, Alfio Artino and wife Vanessa, Diego Gomez and wife Maribel, Feliz Vigil and husband Randy, and Daniel Garcia and wife Deann; great-grandchildren, Matthew Romero and Sherrie Herrera, Tommy Ray Mascareñas and wife Lara, Samantha Baros, Marcos, Shane, Mario and Alicia Artino, Sebastien and Analyssa Gomez, Araya Vigil, and Natalie Garcia; great-great-grandchild, Chanel Romero; and many nieces, nephews and Godchildren; caregiver, Cuca Vences; a very good friend, Adella Garduño; The following will serve as pallbearers, Matthew Romero, Alfio Artino, Diego Gomez, Randy Vigil, Daniel Garcia, Matthew Romero Jr., Patrick Sweeney and Tommy Ray Mascareñas; Honorary pallbearers are several foster children and over 100 children whom she cared for. DENNIS GARCIA
Age 90, a lifelong resident of El Rito, passed away unexpectedly at his home on Sunday, February 4, 2007. He was preceded in death by his beloved daughter, Carla Garcia; parents, Fabian and Teodorita Garcia; brothers, Fabian and Horacio Garcia and sisters, Elvira, Margaret, Lola and Mary. Dennis was an active parishioner of San Juan Nepomuceno Catholic Church in El Rito and also a member of la Sagrada Familia. He served in the 5th Air Force group in New Guinea for a total of 3 years and received the Purple Heart. He was owner of El Llano Merchantile and was a longtime rancher. Dennis is survived by his wife of 53 years, Eliza Garcia of El Rito; children, Dennis R. Garcia and wife Nickie of Santa Fe, Imelda Garcia and husband “T.C.” Tony Casares of El Dorado, Joseph Garcia of El Rito, Patricia Kiesel and husband Bill of Albuquerque, Gerald Garcia of El Dorado and Michael Garcia and Karen Trujillo of El Rito; sister, Molly Contreras and husband Casey of Santa Fe; sisters-in-law, Jane Garcia of El Rito and Josephine Maestas of Santa Cruz; brother-in-law, Pete Lucero and wife Siria of Santa Cruz and numerous nieces, nephews and other family and friends. Lucille M. Westman - Age 90
A resident of Chimayo passed away peacefully on Sunday, February 4, 2007 with her family at her side. She was a loving wife for 67 years, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother.
