MERCEDES RIVERA

Age 84, a resident of Santa Fe, passed peacefully on Sunday, September 28, 2008 at St. Vincent’s Hospital after a short illness. She was preceded in death by her husband, Louis Rivera of Santa Fe; brothers, Antonio and Roberto Casados; brothers and sister-in-law, Ben Maxwell, Rosendo Martinez, Don Crumb, Sam Wood and Stella Casados. Born in El Guique in 1924, she was one of nine children of Pedro and Augustinita Casados. Mercedes had a fulltime caregiver for the past 3 years, Santa Castillo, who was always patient and very caring with her. Her beloved poodle, Princess, was always at her side until her passing. Ms. Rivera is survived by her brother and sisters, Virginia Maxwell, Juanita Martinez, Eloisa Crumb, Marina Wood and Leona Chandler and husband Glen, Pedro Casados and wife Juanita of El Guique; and many nieces and nephews dear to her but particularly dear were Emily Casados-Reeves and Felicia Casados, who counted her as a second mother. She was blessed to have a good companion of many years, George Martinez of Santa Fe. The following will serve as pallbearers, Peter, Pedro Eloy, and Dominic Casados, Peter Garcia, Teddy Abeyta, Robert K. Reeves. Honorary pallbearers are Tony, Catalin, Carlos, and Peter Casados III, Mike Reeves, Ross Martinez, and Glen Chandler. EUFELIA A. VELARDE

Age 94, born on October 25, 1913 and resident of Ojo Sarco, passed away on Sunday, September 28, 2008. She was preceded in death by her parents, Encarnacion and Jacinta Armijo; husband, Enriques Velarde; daughter, Erlinda V. Tafoya; sons, Toby Velarde Sr., Donald Velarde Sr., and Henry Velarde Jr.; great-granddaughter, Stephanie Tafoya; grandsons, Lawrence Velarde and Henry Sean Velarde; sister, Orlinda Lopez; brothers, Flavio, Benjamin and Tranquilino Armijo. Eufelia is survived by her daughter, Lorraine Velarde of Albuquerque; sons, Clovis Velarde and wife Nora of Bernalillo, Joe Velarde and wife Viola of Bernalillo; son-in-law, Floyd Tafoya of Ojo Sarco; daughters-in-law, Dorcas Velarde of Dixon and Florence Velarde of Rio Lucio; her dear grandson that took good care of her, Randy Tafoya; grandchildren, Toby, Tania, Donald Jr. Andrea, Bernadette, Carlos, Marcos, Clarissa, Joey, Jeremy, Jelene and Tamara, 25 great-grandchildren, Caretakers, Albina, Vivian, Matilda, and Gloria, and many other relatives, nieces and nephews. Serving as pallbearers, Randy Tafoya, Toby Velarde, Carlos Velarde, Donald Velarde Jr., Gabriel Salaz, Andres Velarde, Donald Velarde III, Jeremy Velarde and Marcos Velarde. REYNEL MAESTAS

Age 82, a resident of Rio Chama passed away on Saturday, September 27, 2008, surrounded by his wife and family. Daddy was a loving husband, father, grandpa, cement finisher, construction worker, farmer and rancher. He loved hunting, fishing, and riding his four wheeler. He was also involved with the baseball team in Hernandez. Reynel was preceded in death by his parents, Benjamin and Filia Maestas; sisters, Tomasita Maestas and Anne Chacon; brothers, Frankie, Ernest (Tito), and Joe Maestas; granddaughter, Venessa Valerio; brothers-in-law, Frank Coriz, and Sundy and wife Belia Coriz. He will be dearly missed by his wife of 63 years, Mary Coriz Maestas; children, Archie Maestas and wife Vickie of Rio Chama, Elizabeth (Liza) Montoya and husband Martin of Rio Rancho, Annette Valerio Atencio and husband Carlos of Rio Chama, Ben Maestas of Rio Chama, Christine (Tina) Maestas of Rio Rancho, Cindy Benson and husband Rodney of Albuquerque; sisters, Porfie Skelton and husband Jimmy of Albuqueruqe, Susie Rivera, Cordelia Lopez and husband Alex, Josie Cross and husband Dale, Tommy Barreras and husband Celso, all of California and Claudine (Kika) Jaramillo of Espanola; sister-in-law, Eufie and husband Willie Dominguez of Georgia; 17 grandchildren, 11 great-grandchildren, 1 great-great-grandson, and numerous nieces, nephews and loving relatives and friends and neighbors. HOPE L. LOPEZ

Age 69, a resident of Española, passed away on Tuesday, September 30, 2008 following a lengthy illness. Hope was preceded in death by her husband, Donald E. Lopez Sr.; parents, Isidoro and Leonardita Barela; infant daughter, Grace Lopez and numerous other loving relatives. Hope was a member of the Emmanuel Presbyterian Church of Peñasco. She was a nurse and cared for many. She was also a loving mother, grandmother, sister, aunt and friend. Mrs. Lopez is survived by her children, Donald Lopez Jr. of Española, Leonard A. Lopez and wife Veronica of Santa Fe and Sandra Abeyta and husband Alfredo of Albuquerque; grandchildren, Nathaniel Montoya of Truchas, Timothy Maes of Santa Fe and Anthony and Kayla Abeyta both of Albuquerque; brothers and sisters, Fidencia Cordova and Susie Barela both of Truchas and Gilbert Barela and wife Julia of Albuquerque and beloved pet dog, Stonie and numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and other relatives and friends. JUAN ESTEVAN MARTINEZ

Age 66, a resident of La Villita, passed away on Saturday, September 27, 2008 following an automobile accident. Juan was preceded in death by his son, Steve Martinez; parents, Alfredo and Benita Martinez; mother and father-in-law, Juan and Cerila Lucero and sister-in-law, Frances Vigil. Juan was born June 10, 1942. He enjoyed going to the casino, dancing Matachines, participating in softball tournaments, playing pool and listening to Country and Western music with Richard Garcia on Saturday morning on KDCE and numerous other outdoor activities. Mr. Martinez is survived by his wife of 42 years, Diana R. Martinez of La Villita; children, Debra Martinez and companion Jarrod Ortega, Karleen Campos and companion Julian Martinez, Audrey Martinez and companion Frank Gomez, Johnny Martinez and companion Lee Ann Hargrave; adopted grandchildren, Timmy and Eric Martinez, Melanie and Antonio Martinez, Vanessa Martinez and companion James Gallegos; great-grandchild, Jacob Gallegos; sisters, Martha Stockham and husband Frank, Berna Fernandez and husband Alfred, Anna and David Martinez, Joe Vigil and companion Nadine and numerous nieces, nephews and other relatives and friends. GEORGE ROMERO SR.

Age 94, a resident of El Valle, went to be with his Lord on Thursday, October 2, 2008. George was preceded in death by his wife, Oralia Romero; parents, Luis and Adelida Romero; brother, Jose B. Romero; infant son, Raymond Romero; father and mother-in-law, Manuel and Juanita Lovato; son-in-law, Gene Lopez. George was a WWII Veteran where he was injured and was a recipient of the Purple Heart. Mr. Romero is survived by his children, George Romero Jr. and wife Deborah of El Valle, Juanita Lopez of Rodarte, Felix Romero and wife Kathy of Belen and Elmer Romero and wife Flora of Silver City; caretaker, Neomi Aguilar of El Valle; 11 grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren and numerous other relatives and friends. Serving as pallbearers, Michael Romero, Randy Lopez, Joseph Garcia and Allen Romero. Special thanks to the Taos Living Center facility and to El Centro Family Health center in Peñasco for taking care of Mr. Romero’s medical needs. HIPOLITO VALDEZ

Age 84 a resident of Riverside, California and formerly of Cañones passed away on Thursday, September 25, 2008. Hipolito was preceded in death by his parents, Belarmino and Elvira Valdez and wife, Irene Valdez. Hipolito was the most loving person, everyone that knew him loved him so very much, especially his family and friends. Mr. Valdez is survived by his children, Celina Wilson of Riverside, CA, Paul Valdez of Los Lunas, Joanne Thorpe-Valdez and Andrew Valdez all of Riverside, CA; grandchildren, Michael, Katherine and Sarah Wilson, Xavier Cosse, Megan Valdez, Paul Lewis, Simon and Irene Valdez; great-grandchildren, Kelsey and Audrey Wilson and numerous other relatives and friends. Florinda R. Sandoval

Age 90, a resident of Truchas passed away on Saturday, October 4, 2008. She was preceded in death by her husband, Jose A. Sandoval; parents, Severiano & Luisita Rodriguez; sisters, Rebecca Archuleta, Eva Lopez, Beneranda Martinez, Elena Rodriguez, Eloisa Trujillo, Doloritas Montoya; brother, Melaquias Rodriguez; grandson, John Schweiter and infant daughters, Candelaria, Louisita and Andreita Sandoval. Florinda is survived by her children, Minnie Lopez and husband Jose of Trampas, Virginia Schweiter and fiancé Cal Hooker of Apache Junction, AZ., Dorothy Trujillo and husband Jeffrey of Santa Fe, Joseph R. Sandoval and wife Gloria of Chimayo, and Darryl P. Sandoval and wife Teresa of La Mesilla; brother, Antonio Delfin Rodriguez of Utah; sisters, Maria Inez Lopez of Truchas, and Grace Gutierrez of Albuquerque; brother-in-law, Celestino Sandoval of Grants; 19 grandchildren, and 31 great-grandchildren. Florinda administered the Eucharist to the homebound and in the Holy Rosary Catholic Church in Truchas. She was a volunteer Foster Grandmother at Mountain View Elementary in Cordova. She was a very active individual who took excellent care of her family and loved them very much. She will be dearly missed by her family and those who knew and loved her. The family of Florinda R. Eutimia Romero - Age 95

Our beloved mother, Eutimia Romero, age 95, a lifelong resident of Jaconita, born June 1, 1913, passed away peacefully at her home Saturday, October 4, 2008. She was preceded in death by her loving husband, Cipriano Romero; parents, Estanislado and Concepcion Gallegos; siblings, Trinidad Gallegos, Agustiniano Gallegos, Meliton Gallegos, Ramona Ortiz, Emelina Ortiz; daughters, Loyola, Ramoncita, and grandsons Dennis Romero, Christopher Romero, and Gary Peter Romero. Eutimia was a loving wife and mother who enjoyed the simple joys of life. She gave her gifts of unconditional love, patience, and inner peace and was a source of strength and unselfishness to her family, friends, and neighbors which was exemplified by her generosity and help to others. Eutimia Romero is survived by her children, Horacio (Ersilia) Romero, Pete (Margaret) Romero, Robert (Nancy) Romero, and Joe (Betty) Romero, Diana (Tony) Gonzales, Cristina Salazar, and Belinda (Steven) Lopez, sister, Oralia Quintana; brother, Jose Gallegos; sister-in-law, Virginia Gallegos; 22 grandchildren, 35 great grandchildren, 1 great-great grandson, and many other relatives and friends. MABEL ROSE VIGIL

Age 55, a resident of Chimayo, passed away unexpectedly on Sunday, October 5, 2008. Mabel was preceded in death by her mother, Rosario Baca; father, Pablo Vigil; sister, Pauline Vigil and brothers, Pablito and Chrisoforo Vigil. Mable was a loving mother, grandmother and friend. We will remember her loved for Hersey’s and her pets. She liked to help others and will be dearly missed. Ms. Vigil is survived by her children, Gina Montoya of Chimayo, Peter “Pablo” Garduño and wife Debra of Albuquerque and Julian Montoya and companion Melanie Salazar of Española; brothers and sisters, Mary Ann DeAguero of Chimayo, Irene Vigil of La Mesilla, Dolores “Lola” Vigil of Chimayo, Dorothy Martinez of Española, Nancy Lovato of Hernandez, Damian, Napoleon and Levi Vigil all of Chimayo; 8 grandchildren and numerous other relatives and friends. Diego A. Jaramillo Jr.

Age 91, a resident of Petaca passed away on Tuesday, October 7, 2008. He was preceded in death by his parents, Diego and Amada Jaramillo; brothers, Evaristo and Eli Jaramillo; sisters, Marcellina Trujillo, Emma Jaramillo and Bertha Gallegos. Diego was a very loving husband, father, grandfather, and brother, but was also a great friend to his wife and family. Mr. Jaramillo enjoyed the outdoors, hunting, and fishing. He spent time working on his ranch when he wasn’t busy watching his grandchildren with their sports. He was fun to listen to and had a great sense of humor. Diego was incredibly wise, had a big heart, and would help anyone in need. He will be dearly missed by those who knew and loved him. He is survived by his wife of 56 years, Erlinda Irene Jaramillo of Petaca; son, Lorenzo Jaramillo and wife Omé, and Diego R. Jaramillo and companion Darlene, all of Servilleta Plaza; daughter, Amy Martinez and husband Manuel of Rio Chama; sister, Teresina Trujillo of Denver, CO; brother, Levi Jaramillo and wife Josefa of Albuquerque; brother-in-law, Ray Velasquez and companion Romie of Paramount, CA; sister-in-law, Lillian Torrez of Denver, and Linda Bollinger of San Jose, CA; 12 grandchildren; 1 great-grandchild and numerous cousins, nephews and nieces. His grandchildren will serve as pallbearers, Anita, Diego, Leota, Jerome and Lorenso Jaramillo, Kenny and Keith Velasquez, and Vicki Villareal. ERIN HEATHER BJORKLUND

Age 21, a resident of Los Alamos, passed away suddenly in a tragic accident on Friday, October 3, 2008. Erin was attending Northern Arizona University in Flagstaff, Arizona where she was planning to graduate in December. She was an honor student studying History and Philosophy with a minor in math. She was born in Hershey, PA but attended school in Los Alamos since 2nd grade. She ran cross country and lettered in music and academics in high school, studied 3 years of Latin and took all the math courses offered. She attended Allstate music festival all four years of high school, attended district Honor Choir and sang in Harmony & Encore Choirs throughout high school. Mrs. Paula Nichols, the choir director was one of her favorite teachers. She loved to sing, play violin, and piano. She was part of the White Rock Baptist Church Youth Worship Team, sharing her gift of music. She spent this past summer in Los Alamos working at the Department of Health in Santa Fe and had become quite a gourmet cook, specializing in vegetarian dishes. She was vibrant, full of life, bright, talented, creative, sweet and loving. She was wonderful and a beautiful person. She is loved and greatly missed by her family and many friends. Erin is survived by her parents, Mark and Heidi Bjorklund of Los Alamos; sisters, Renee Johnson and husband Morgan of Hershey, PA and Rachel Bjorklund of Flagstaff, Arizona; brother, David Bjorklund of Los Alamos; nephew, Payton Johnson of Hershey, PA; grandparents, Dale and Molly Holm, and Marilyn Bjorklund all of Los Alamos; uncles, Eric Bjorklund and wife Kathy of Los Alamos, Eric Holm and wife Kalynne of Monument, CO and Chris Holm and wife Lesleigh of Pacific Palisades of CA; aunt, Lynn Bjorklund of Ely, NV; cousins, Bryan Holm and Jacob Holm both of Monument, CA and numerous other relatives and friends. RUBEN G. DIAZ

Age 61, a resident of Santa Fe, passed away on Tuesday, October 7, 2008. He was preceded in death by his parents, Augustine and Alicia Diaz; son, Christopher Diaz; mother-in-law, Rebecca Jaramillo and sister-in-law, Rosalita MacHenry. Ruben was a very kind, loving, giving and thoughtful person. He enjoyed watching sports on TV and spent fun times with all his nieces and nephews. He was very devoted to his family and never had an unkind word for anyone. He was known as being very dignified, respectable and committed to his job and was the best dad anyone could have. He will be dearly missed by those who knew and loved him. Mr. Diaz is survived by his children, Crystal Diaz and husband Mark Bueno of Santa Fe, Jon Payne and wife Debbie of Kansas, Alicia Payne and Annette Johnson all of Kansas; grandchildren, Nathaniel Bueno-Diaz of Santa Fe, Brittany Rael of Albuquerque, Zachary, Jesse, Jay, Amber and Cheyenne Payne all of Wichita, Kansas; sisters, Alicia Saulters and Priscilla Diaz both of Kansas; former wife, Beverly Kaur-Armendariz and husband Miguel of Abiquiu and numerous other relatives and friends. CATHERINE E. MAESTAS

Age 80, a resident of Rodarte, passed away on Thursday, October 9, 2008 following a lengthy illness. She was preceded in death by her parents, Newton and Mildred Strike; brother, Raymond Strike and sisters, Adel and Bernice Strike. Mrs. Maestas is survived by her husband, Benito Maestas of Rodarte; son, Newton Strike of Oregon; sister, Diane Larson of Florida; brothers, John Strike of Montana, Leon King of Montana; special niece, Mitch Strike of Montana; special nephew, Mike Strike of Florida; nephew, Bush Larson of Florida; and numerous other relatives and friends. ANDREW SALAZAR

Age 54, a resident of Rio Rancho, passed away on Tuesday, October 7, 2008 following a lengthy illness. Andrew was preceded in death by his parents, Pablo and Florencia Salazar; brother, David Salazar; niece, Nicolas and Lisa Salazar; paternal grandparents, Valentin and Luisita Salazar and maternal grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Cruz Baros. Andrew was a welder by trade and loved cars and car shows. He also loved to joke around a lot. Mr. Salazar is survived by his wife, Chloe Salazar of Rio Rancho; first wife, Alice Salazar; son, Moses Salazar of Española; mother of his child, Judy Martinez of Española; brother, Louis Salazar and wife Siria of Española; sister, Orlinda Herrera and husband Leroy of Fairview; nieces and nephews, Mary and Michael Salazar, Natalie and LeRoy Herrera and numerous other relatives and friends. BERSABE (BERTHA) MARTINEZ

Age 75, a resident of Vallecitos, departed to her eternal resting place on Saturday, October 11, 2008 after a courageous battle with cancer. Bertha was preceded in death by her parents, Leandro and Bersabe Gallegos and mother and father-in-law, Jose and Teofila Martinez. Bertha was an active member of the auxiliary of the Morada de Nuestro Padre Jesus in El Llanito and Sacred Heart Society of Vallecitos. Bertha also enjoyed being a foster grandparent at the Ojo Caliente Elementary for the last 11 years. She was a loving and caring woman, always willing to lend a helping hand, but most important she was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, sister, aunt and friend. Mrs. Martinez is survived by her husband of 57 years, Ben Martinez of Vallecitos; daughters, Darlene Lovato and companion Diego Jaramillo of Servilleta, Frieda and Isabelle Martinez of Española; grandchildren, Daniel Lovato and wife Erica of La Puebla, Alfred Lovato of Española Darryl Lovato and companion Letitia Espinoza of Chamita, Estevan Trujillo of Española and Joann and Therese Maestas both of Albuquerque; great-grandchildren, Derek, Joshua, Alexis, Matthew, Alexander and Dylan Lovato and Mikayla Evans; brothers and sisters, Anselmo and Lucille Gallegos, Fidelia Jaramillo all of Vallecitos, Deluvina Archuleta, Magdalena Chavez, Anita Martinez, Elevina and Alex Salazar all of Española and Ayola Ocaña of El Rito; brothers and sisters-in-law, Abel and Felonize Martinez of Vadito, Roy Martinez, Teofilo and Amelia Martinez of Española, Anita and Abelardo Martinez of Ojo Caliente and Isabella and Dave Sandoval of California; aunt, Eliza Rael and numerous other relatives and friends. Age 95, a resident of Hernandez, passed away on Friday, October 10, 2008. She was preceded in death by her parents, Atanacio and Atircia Trujillo; husband, Maclovio Mondragon, sons, Alex and Larry Mondragon; brothers, Edumenio and ana, Lorenzo and Josefina, Patrocinio and Olivama, and Lucas and Elisa; sisters, Maria De Los Angele’s Garcia and husband Jose Pedro, Adela Vigil and husband Gorgonio, Juanita Maestas and husband Pat, and Tomasita Padilla and husband Cleto; daughter-in-law, Rosie Mondragon; grandson, Nick Mondragon Jr.; great-granddaughter, Shanise Padilla. Floripa is survived by her sons, Gilbert, Ted and Pearl, Albert and companion Cathy, Eloy, Roman and Pilar and Rudy and Margie Mondragon; Daughters, Gloria Mondragon and Virginia Pacheco; close friend of the family, Pablo Fernandez; special family members, niece, Cedelia Jaramillo; nephew, Manuel Maestas; grandson, Chris Mondragon, 37 grandchildren, 71 great-gradchildren, and 8 great-great grandchildren. Assisting the family as pallbearers will be Chris, Larry Jr., Herman Mondragon; Alvin Padilla, Leonard Pacheco and Roger Gonzales. Honorary pallbearers are, Catherine Rivas, Christopher J. Pacheco, Gabrielle Vargas, Joel Mondragon, Larry Mondragon III, Leonard Padilla and Lucas Trujillo. The family of Floripa Mondragon has place the care of their loved one to the DeVargas Funeral Home of the Española Valley.
