Roddy Glen Johnson

Roddy Glen Johnson passed away Friday, Feb. 25, 2000, in Cortez, Colo.

Roddy graduated from Cap Rock High School in Amarillo, Texas, in 1975. He graduated from Texas Tech University in Lubbock, Texas, in 1977, and from Southwestern Oklahoma State Pharmacy School in 1979. He completed two years pediatric residency at Texas Tech University Medical Center.

Roddy is a veteran and served as a medical doctor in the United States Air Force. He was discharged in 1988. Roddy practiced as a general practitioner in Cuba, N.M., Artesia, N.M., Portales, N.M. at Life Course of Farmington, and just recently opened a private practice in Kirtland.

He served on the executive committee at San Juan Regional Medical Center in Farmington.

Roddy is survived by his parents, Joyce and Cecil Johnson of Amarillo; sister and husband, Mindee and Rick Flippin of Lubbock; three nephews, Jack, Josh and Jake; life partner Todd Beasley of Farmington; and numerous other family members and friends.

Roddy was a compassionate, caring and loving physician and friend to all who knew him. He will be deeply missed by all who cared for and loved him.

A memorial service will be held at 9 a.m. on Friday, March 3, 2000, in the Henderson Fine Arts Building at San Juan College, Room 9017, 4601 College Blvd. in Farmington.

All flowers should be sent to the residence of Dr. Johnson and Todd Beasley at No. 31, County Road 6570, Kirtland, NM 87417, or P.O. Box 1623, Kirtland, NM 87417.

Burke W. Pete

Burke W. Pete, 80, of Farmington passed away Feb. 26, 2000, at his residence. He was born March 15, 1919, in Box Canyon, N.M., to Hosteen yaz and Kayades bah yaz Pete. He was raised around the Newcomb/Petespring area.

Mr. Pete was a U.S. Army veteran, a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 2182, and a retired railroad worker.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his brother, Joe B. Pete; sisters, Mary Pete Smith and Rachel Pete Fairfax; and one grandson, Francis Frank Jr.

Survivors include his wife, Isabel F. Pete of Farmington; daughter, Bertha Dempsey of San Jose, Calif.; stepchildren, Frances Frank of Kayenta, Ariz., Jeanette Harvey of Kirtland, Virginia Daniels of Albuquerque, and Wilson Frank, Bruce Frank and Ervin Frank, all of Farmington; sister, Jenny Pete of Bloomfield; brothers, Wilford Pete and wife, Ruth, of Huerfano, and John S. Pete and wife, Irene, of Gallegos Wash, N.M.; 24 grandchildren and 18 great-grandchildren.

Visitation will be held from 3 to 6 p.m. today, Wednesday, March 1, 2000, at Brewer, Lee & Larkin Chapel.

Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. on Thursday, March 2, 2000, at Brewer, Lee & Larkin Chapel, with Pastor Mae Martin and Ervin Frank officiating. Interment will follow at Greenlawn Cemetery.

Pallbearers will be Brandyn Benallie, Lee Frank, Earl Frank, Thelda Frank, Eddie Blackie and Aljandro France.

Honorary pallbearers will be Matthew Frank, Marc Daniels, Michael Harvey, Calvin Pete, Wilson Blackie and Jorenzo Goldtooth.

Funeral arrangements are with Brewer, Lee & Larkin Funeral Home, 103 E. Ute St. in Farmington, 325-8688.

Bennett P. Standley

The Lord called Bennett P. Standley, 51, home Feb. 20, 2000. He was born June 1, 1948.

Cremation has taken place.

Services will be in Utah at a later date.

John Allen Haley

John Allen Haley, 68, of Farmington died April 5, 2000, at his home in Farmington.

Funeral arrangements are pending with Cope Memorial Chapel of Farmington, 327-5142.

Isabelle Grace Herrick

Isabelle Grace Herrick was born Dec. 29, 1909, in Laugheed, Alberta, Canada. She passed away April 2, 2000, in Rialto, Calif., at the home of her son, Dr. Robert Herrick. Her parents were Jesse Louis and Jean Landals Fischer. Isabelle was the oldest of five daughters. She lived in Canada until she was ready for high school, when the family moved to Nampa, Idaho. She attended Northwest Nazarene College in Nampa, where she met Ralph Albin Herrick. They were married June 1, 1929.

Isabelle and Ralph moved to Farmington in 1948 as teachers. He taught English at Farmington High School and she taught first grade at Swinburne and Apache. She was a charter member of Tau Chapter Delta Kappa Gamma, and was inducted into the Farmington Education Hall of Fame.

One of her sons became a minister and three other sons became physicians. Her husband retired from teaching and became a physician in 1962, at the age of 55. She retired from teaching in 1965 and began assisting her husband and son in their medical office. She retired in 1999 at the age of 89, from her work at the medical office.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband and one sister, Jean McFarland.

She is survived by her four sons and their families: Dr. James Herrick and wife, Charlotte, of Santa Ana, Calif., the Rev. Ralph Herrick and wife, Nelda, of Farmington, Dr. Kenneth Herrick and wife, Myrna, of Chico, Calif., and Dr. Robert Herrick of Rialto, Calif. She is also survived by 15 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren; and three sisters, Norma Mangum, Zoe Humphrey and Muriel Spencer.

She was a member of the Church of the Nazarene in Santa Ana, Calif.

Visitation will be from 1 until 5 p.m. on Sunday, April 9, at Cope Memorial Chapel in Farmington.

Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. on Monday, April 10, 2000, also at Cope Memorial Chapel, with the Rev. John Preston officiating.

Interment will follow at Memory Gardens where she will be laid to rest beside her husband, Dr. Ralph Herrick.

Service arrangements are with Cope Memorial Chapel of Farmington, 327-5142.

Walter M. Kennedy

Walter M. Kennedy, 83, a native of Kirtland, passed away Monday, April 3, 2000, at San Juan Regional Medical Center in Farmington after a short illness. He was born Dec. 24, 1916, in Farmington. His parents were Walter Leroy Kennedy and Viola (Smith) Kennedy.

He was an Indian trader and spent 40 years on the reservation, retiring after 32 years at Dennehotso Trading Post. He retired in 1982, but was still buying rugs until his death. His first love was his family, but his second was talking and visiting with all of his old Navajo friends.

Mr. Kennedy is survived by his wife, Flora (Eaton) Kennedy of Kirtland, whom he married Dec. 27, 1945. They had two children, Lavina Bailey and husband, Frank, and Ivan Kennedy and wife, Donna, all of Kirtland; eight grandchildren, Tamaree Bailey, Robert and Mindy Bailey, Dustin Bailey and Leah Bailey, Stacy and Jason House, Danna and Dennis Johnson, Jerald and Kristen Kennedy, and Bo Kennedy; and five great-grandchildren. He is also survived by two sisters-in-law, Edith Kennedy and Bonnie Crook, both of Farmington; and numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; three brothers, Earl, Troy and Harold Kennedy; and three sisters, Blanche Moore, Lucille McGee, and Pearl Kennedy, who died Wednesday, March 29, 2000, and whose funeral was held last Saturday.

Friends may call from 8 a.m. until 6 p.m. today, Thursday, April 6, at Chapel of Memories Funeral Home, 458 County Road 6100 in Kirtland, and also one hour prior to services at the church.

Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. on Friday, April 7, at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints Stake Center on Highway 64, with Bishop Keith Lee officiating. Burial will follow at the Kirtland Cemetery.

Pallbearers will be Robert Bailey, Jerald Kennedy, Dustin Bailey, Bo Kennedy, Jason House, Dennis Johnson, Troy Townsend and Jerry Wheeler. Honorary pallbearers will be all of his close friends and associates.

Arrangements are with Chapel of Memories Funeral Home in Kirtland, (505) 598-9636.

Clara J. Smith

Clara J. Smith, 51, of Bloomfield passed away April 1, 2000. She was born Jan. 16, 1949, to Alfred and Mary Smith.

She was preceded in death by her parents.

Survivors include her son, Elvin Benny of Bloomfield; five daughters, Alvina, Elvira and Davina Benny, all of Bloomfield, Alva Benny of Phoenix, Ariz., and Cherlynn Lopez of Ignacio, Colo.; four brothers, Russell Smith, Alfred Smith Jr., Roland Smith and Stanley Smith; two sisters, Carolyn Bennally and Christine Lavato; and six grandchildren.

Visitation will be from 1 to 5 p.m. today, Thursday, April 6, 2000, at Brewer, Lee & Larkin Chapel in Farmington.

Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. on Friday, April 7, 2000, at the Church of the Brethren in Lybrook, N.M., with Pastor Russell Kiester officiating. Interment will follow at Lybrook Cemetery.

Pallbearers will be Stanley Smith, Russell Smith Sr., Russell Smith Jr., Calbert Martinez, Alfred Smith Jr. and Rustin Smith.

Honorary pallbearers will be Elvin Benny, Alvina Benny, Elvira Benny, Davina Benny, Alva Benny and Cherlynn Lopez.

Funeral arrangements are with Brewer, Lee & Larkin Funeral Home, 103 E. Ute St. in Farmington, 325-8688.

Edith Benally

Edith Benally, 92, a lifetime resident of Upper Fruitland, died Monday, May 8, 2000, at Life Care Center in Farmington. Mrs. Benally was born Sept. 2, 1907, in Fruitland. Her parents were Charlie Benally and Red Donkey's daughter.

Edith was married to Natonie Yazzie Begay, who preceded her in death in 1975.

Arrangements are pending with Chapel of Memories Funeral Home, 458 County Road 6100 in Kirtland, (505) 598-9636.

Aaron Clah Chischiligi

Aaron Clah Chischiligi, 77, of Teec Nos Pos, Ariz., passed away Saturday, May 6, 2000, at Northern Navajo Medical Center in Shiprock. Mr. Chischiligi, the son of Cheesy Clah and Emma Benally Clah, was born Oct. 10, 1922, in Beclabito. He graduated in 1940 from Shiprock Agricultural High School, and served in the U.S. Army during World War II. He was a silversmith and enjoyed traditional song and dance.

Mr. Chischiligi was preceded in death by his parents; and brothers, Robert and Wallace Clah.

He is survived by his daughter, Evangeline Begay of Lukachukai, Ariz.; fiancée, Cora Mae Joe of Tohatchi; sisters, Daisy Clah and Minnie Tsosie, both of Teec Nos Pos, and Bessie Clah of Shiprock; several grandchildren, nieces and nephews.

Recitation of the rosary will be at 9:30 a.m. today, Wednesday, May 10, led by Father John Paul Sauter, followed at 10 a.m. by the funeral service, with Father John Paul officiating. This will be at Chapel of Memories Funeral Home, 458 County Road 6100 in Kirtland.

Burial will follow at the Veterans Section of the Shiprock Community Cemetery, with Military Honors conducted by Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 9517.

Pallbearers are Anthony Joe, David Joe Jr., Dennison Joe, Eric Joe, Byron Yazzie and Sonny McKinney.

Arrangements are with Chapel of Memories Funeral Home in Kirtland, 598-9636.

Doyle Lasater

Doyle Lasater, 73, died at home in Bloomfield Saturday, May 6, 2000.

Doyle was a modest man, and a cowboy at heart. He proudly served his country in the U.S. Army in the Philippines during World War II. Doyle was a carpenter by trade.

Doyle was preceded in death by his parents, Marion and Sadie Lasater; his wife, Wilda Lasater; his brother, Glen; and his sister, Polly Locklear.

Doyle is survived by two sons, Roger Lasater and wife, Martha, of Bloomfield and Danny Lasater and friend, Sandy Parker, of Bloomfield; two daughters, Debbie Mohler and husband, Sam, of Bloomfield and Beverly Murray and husband, Terry, of Norman, Okla.; three brothers, Dean Lasater and wife, Donna, of Big Springs, Texas, Charles Lasater of Bloomfield and Buddy Lasater of Flora Vista; and three sisters, Margie Falkner of Lubbock, Texas, Joyce Hartman of Flora Vista and Glenda Kruhm of Los Lunas. Doyle also leaves behind 14 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren.

Visitation will be from 2 to 8 p.m. today, Wednesday, May 10, at Cope Memorial Chapel of Aztec. The family will be present to receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m.

Services will be at 2 p.m. on Thursday, May 11, 2000, at Cope Memorial Chapel of Aztec. Pastor Brad Perry of Hospice will officiate. Pallbearers will be Doyle's grandsons, David Steward, Joey Steward, Larry Lasater, Derek Mohler, Jeremy Mohler, Shane Mohler, Bryan Murray and Danny Lasater Jr.

Interment will be at Memory Gardens. Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 2182 will provide graveside military honors.

Arrangements are with Cope Memorial Chapel of Aztec, 334-9332.

Katherine Ayze Sandoval

Katherine Ayze Sandoval, 62, of Blanco Canyon passed away May 5, 2000. She was born Aug. 18, 1937, in Blanco Canyon to George and Doris Ayze.

Mrs. Sandoval was preceded in death by her parents and her husband, Wilson W. Sandoval.

Survivors include her four sons, Robert Sandoval of Farmington, Leroy Sandoval of Durango, Winston Sandoval of Aztec and Allen Sandoval of Blanco Canyon; three daughters, Pearl S. Begay and Janey L. Sandoval, both of Albuquerque, and Angeline Sandoval of Durango; four brothers, Lewis Ayze, Bill Ayze and Eddie Ayze, all of Blanco Canyon, and Daniel Ayze of Leupp, Ariz.; three sisters, Ruth Ayze, Violet Etcitty and Frances Ayze; 19 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. on Thursday, May 11, 2000, at Dzil Na `Oodilli Bible Church in Huerfano. Interment will follow at Brethren In Christ Mission Cemetery in Otis.

Pallbearers will be Windston Sandoval, Allen Sandoval, Paul Begay Jr., Phermond Begay, Arvin Harrison, Calvin Harrison, Michael Benally and Keith Benally.

Honorary pallbearers will be Pearl S. Begay, Janey L. Sandoval, Angeline Sandoval, Robert Sandoval and Leroy Sandoval.

Julia F. Dee

Julia F. Dee, 81, of Teec Nos Pos, Ariz., passed away Wednesday, May 17, 2000, at San Juan Regional Medical Center in Farmington. She was born July 2, 1918, in White Mesa, Utah.

Funeral arrangements are pending through Cope Memorial Chapel of Farmington, 327-5142.

Laura Englebrecht

Graveside funeral services for Laura Englebrecht, 94, of Aztec will be held today, Thursday, May 18, 2000, at 1 p.m. at the Fairview Cemetery in Albuquerque.

She is survived by one son, Lloyd Englebrecht and wife, Dorothy, of Farmington; three grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

Funeral arrangements are with Cope Memorial Chapel of Aztec, 334-9332.

Mary A. Huggins

Mary A. Huggins, 102, of La Plata passed away May 16, 2000, at San Juan Regional Medical Center. She was born Sept. 27, 1897, in Wisconsin to Dora and David C. Nickles. She moved to Oklahoma in 1903, and finally settled in La Plata in 1910.

She was one of 11 children - seven boys and four girls - and the oldest daughter. Mary was a cowgirl and lived in cow camps. She loved to ride horses, and her family raised cattle in Ignacio, Tiffany and in the Mesa Mountains.

Mary and Scott Huggins were married Dec. 26, 1917, in Aztec. They were married 45 years before his death in 1963. She was really known for her cooking - in cow camps and at the old La Plata School, as well as in her home. She raised her son, Kenneth, and a nephew, Harry Cameron, and helped raise nieces and nephews, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Mary was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, seven brothers and two sisters.

Survivors include her son, Kenneth Huggins and wife, Patricia; sister, Hazel Benedict of Tempe, Ariz.; two grandchildren, Kenny Huggins and Darlene Hodgson and husband, Richard; six great-grandchildren, Jerry Huggins, Bethany Whitley and husband, Leroy, Kaleb Hodgson, Josh Huggins, Jamie Huggins and Jonah Huggins; and one great-great-grandchild, Levi Whitley.

Visitation will be from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. today, Thursday, May 18, 2000, at Brewer, Lee & Larkin Chapel in Farmington.

Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. on Friday, May 19, 2000, at First Presbyterian Church in Farmington, with the Rev. Dr. Frank D. Hayes officiating. Interment will follow at the La Plata Cemetery.

Pallbearers will be Richard Hodgson, Kenny Huggins, Kaleb Hodgson, Jerry Huggins, Josh Huggins and Leroy Whitley.

Honorary pallbearers will be Alan Knight, Stephen McCarty, Bruce Schofield, Mike Tafoya, Daniel Merchant and Charles Hickman.

A reception will follow at the old schoolhouse in La Plata.

Funeral arrangements are with Brewer, Lee & Larkin Funeral Home, 103 E. Ute St. in Farmington, 325-8688.
