Alfred "Alfie" Yazzie Jr

Alfred "Alfie" Yazzie Jr, of Farmington, passed away Tuesday, Nov. 27, 2007. He was born Jan. 9, 1950, in Farmington.
Alfred was born at San Juan Episcopal Mission. He attended school at Brethren in Christ Mission in Otis, Methodist Mission, and graduated from Farmington High School in 1968.
He was preceded in death by his maternal grandparents, Jim and Louise Werito; paternal grandparents, Frank and Nellie Yazzie; and his brothers, Raymond, Arthur, Presley and Ronnie.
He is survived by his wife, Jennifer; children, Andrea, Kaliska, Brandon and Lindsey Yazzie; and six grandchildren, Vanessa, Ashley, Alicia, Brittney, Danielle and Savanna; his parents, Alfred and Jane Yazzie; and sisters, Andrea Yazzie, Kaliska Yazzie and Lindsey Yazzie.
He served in the Vietnam War from Nov. 6, 1970, to April 21, 1972. He was a proud warrior and took great pride in being a member of the Army 101st Airborne Division.
As a young man he enjoyed rebuilding customizing Chevy vehicles with his brothers and cousins. Alfie also loved working outdoors in his yard, caring and spending time with his grandchildren, listening to music and playing with his dog, Oliver. Alfie's laughter and humor brought great joy to his family, and we are grateful to have shared our lives with him, our "Brother Warrior."
Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Monday, Dec. 3, 2007, at World Harvest Center, 1024 N. Butler Ave., in Farmington, with Pastor William Lee officiating. Interment will be at Greenlawn Cemetery in Farmington.

Floyd Wayne Hawkins, 70, of Aztec, died Wednesday, Nov. 28, 2007, at San Juan Regional Medical Center in Farmington. He was born Feb. 21, 1937, in Pueblo, Colo.
Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday, Dec. 4, 2007, at the First Baptist Church in Cuba. Interment will follow at the Lindreth Cemetery in Lindreth.

Beatrice E. Gallegos
Beatrice "Betty" E. Gallegos, 85, a long time resident of Allison, Colo., and a recent resident of Aztec, passed away Nov. 29, 2007, in Aztec. She was preceded in death by her husband, Jose Rosenaldo (Ross) Gallegos, in 1980.
She is survived by her children, Ross Gallegos (Nioma), Lucy Gallegos, Celso Gallegos and Fred Gallegos (Audrey); four grandchildren, Larry, Monica (Whitford), Melody and Mario Gallegos; two great-grandchildren, Gregg Joseph and Michael Ross; sisters, Stella Quintana and Leora Valdez; and brother, Steve Mascarenas (Adonelia).
A funeral service will be at 11 a.m. Monday at the New Life Worship Center, 8121 E. Main St. in Farmington, near Flora Vista. The Rev. Ruben Romero will officiate. A reception will follow.
An informal procession will then proceed to the Crestview Cemetery on the Florida Mesa in Colorado for interment.

Helen Louise Gallagher, 68, passed away Wednesday, Nov. 28, 2007, in Kirtland. Helen was born June 2, 1938, in Albuquerque, to Nicholas and Helen Paul.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Nicholas and Helen Paul; her sister, Ann Attwood; and a daughter, Diane Gourde.
Helen is survived by her sister, Betty Paul; daughters and grandchildren, Gidget and Lonnie Duncan and children, BriAnna, Andrew, MaKayla and Jordan, Cindy and child, Heather, Marie and children, Chrissy, Jeff and Amber, Diane (deceased) and children, Clifton, LJ, Melissa, Amanda, Jessica and Matthew, Tina and children, Jacque, Bobbie, Liberty, Tiffany and Heath, Joleene and children, Tavis and Gabrielle; and 12 great-grandchildren.
Services for Helen will be at 10 a.m. Monday, Dec. 3, at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, Highway 6100 in Kirtland.

Carlos L. Gonzales, 75, of Henderson, Nev., died Monday, Jan. 14, 2008.
He was a retired produce manager.
He is survived by his wife, Sencion C.; daughter, Geneva A. Kincaid; sons, Belton L., Charles D., and Raymond W.; brothers, Seferino and Raymond; and sisters, Rose, Pearl Sandoval, and Corrine Ritchey.
Services were held in Henderson.
Howard C. Hubbs

Howard C. Hubbs passed from this life on Friday, January 25, 2008 at the age of 67 with his loving family gathered around him. He was born September 8, 1940 in Durango, Colo. to Cecil and Mildred (Campbell) Hubbs. Howard is survived by his loving wife Carol; children, LaJuan Hubbs, Jeanene Largent and husband Darin, Christine Jensen, Jason Lytle, and Brian Lytle and wife Tessa; five grandchildren; and by his mother Mildred Hubbs. He was a devoted and loving son, husband, father, and grandfather.
Funeral services will be held 11 a.m., Monday, Jan. 28 at the Marvel United Methodist Church in Marvel, Colo. Pastor Keith Berryman will officiate. Interment will follow at the Marvel Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Dale Campbell, Gene Campbell, Lee Campbell, Gary Hubbs, Gary Hubbs, Jr., and Jim Hubbs. Honorary Pallbearer will be Roy Frame.

Vera N. Lawson

Vera N. Lawson, 87, of Aztec, died Tuesday, Jan. 22, 2008, at Four Corners Good Samaritan Village in Aztec. She was born May 17, 1920, to Arney R. Lawson and Ethel (King) Lawson, in Pittsburgh, Kan.
Mrs. Lawson worked for many years at Citizens Bank in Aztec. She was a graduate of Aztec High School and lived most of her adult years in Aztec.
Mrs. Lawson came to Aztec from Goltry, Okla., with her family, to set up a new life in Aztec. She lived on a farm on Aztec Ruins Road and Blanco Ave. She was active in the Aztec Methodist Church in the youth group and as a young adult she led Sunday school and youth group activities where she met her husband, George M. Lawson. They were married for 45 years. During World War II they lived in California and returned to Aztec in 1955. She spent a number of years living in Largo Canyon and bought a home in Aztec in 1960.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Arney R. and Ethel (King) Patterson; two brothers and their wives, Dale F. and Irene Patterson of Concord, Calif., and G.L. (Pat) and Ethel Patterson of Reading, Calif.; her husband, George M. Lawson Sr. of Aztec; a brother-in-law and his wife, Carl and Joan Lawson of Oklahoma City, Okla.
Survivors include her daughter, Beverly J. Lawson of Aztec; her son and daughter-in-law, George M. (Don) Lawson Jr. and Deb of Grand Island, Neb.; a grandson, Merritt G. Lawson of Kearney, Neb.; two stepgrandsons, McLain Dorsey of Lincoln, Neb., and Jad Dorsey of Grand Island; a sister, Wilma Jean Kaime of Largo Canyon; three sisters-in-law, Lorraine Ogden of Alamogordo, Madge Stinson of Aztec, and Marda Cooksey of Albuquerque; and numerous nieces, nephews, and great-nieces and great-nephews.
Vera's quiet strength was a great source of comfort and inspiration to her family and friends. She always had a sewing project that demonstrated her creative side. And her service and consideration for others were among her strongest characteristics.

Leonard H. Scales

Leonard H. Scales, of Farmington, passed away Thursday, Jan. 24, 2008, in Farmington. He was 90 years old. Leonard was born in Abilene, Texas, the son of Walter and Dovie Scales. He was united in marriage to Wesley Jane "Sidney" Reese on July 28, 1940. They were married for 64 years.
Leonard was a proud member of the Eighth Air Force and was a B-17 Bomber Pilot in World War II, stationed in Lavenham, England. His crew called him "Pappy," since he was the oldest guy (24 years old and the father of one daughter). Many stories were told to his family and friends in the later years of his life.
Leonard's legacy in Durango, Colo., would have to be described as the "Rocket-Man," in reference to the Rocket Drive-In Theatre, which he and his brother, Jack, built in 1956. The Rocket Drive-In was a landmark of the Durango community for 50 years.
Leonard found much happiness in skiing, fishing, boating and swimming. He was a three-time first place winner in the San Juan County Senior Olympics in 2007. He loved skiing at Purgatory so much, that he bought a season pass after two knee surgeries at the age of 85.
His wife, Sidney, and daughter, Mike, preceded Leonard in death.
He is survived by his daughter, Melanie J. Scales of Durango; and a son, Wesley Scales and his wife, Judy, of Redmond, Ore. Mr. Scales had eight grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.
Leonard Scales will be deeply missed by his family and dear friends. With tears in our eyes and peace in our heart, we say Fly Pampa Fly.
A memorial service will be at 10 a.m. Monday, Jan. 28, at First United Methodist Church, 808 N. Monterey Ave. in Farmington.

Jonovan Kyle Allen, 19, of Mesa, Ariz., answered the Lord's beckoning to continue to serve Him in His mighty Kingdom above on Sunday, May 18, 2008. He was born on March 13, 1989, in Shiprock.
Services will be held at 10 a.m., today, Saturday, May 24, at the Shiprock LDS Church. Viewing will be from 9 to 9:45 a.m. Officiating will be Dick Neztsosie, 1st Counselor LDS Church. Interment will be at Shiprock Cemetery with reception at LDS Church immediately following.

Brenda Lynn Bradshaw, 44, of Waterflow, passed away on Thursday, May 21, 2008. She was born Nov. 24, 1963, in Durango, Colo., to Dean and Sally Bradshaw.
Brenda is survived by her parents, Dean and Sally Bradshaw; seven brothers; and four sisters. She is also survived by her grandmother, Viola Bradshaw; and 26 nieces and nephews.
Brenda lived a beautiful life of joy and love, circled in the love of her family and friends. Brenda spread sunshine and smiles. She will be dearly missed.
Family visitation will be from 9:45 to 10:15 a.m. Memorial services will follow at 10:30 a.m., Monday, May 26, at the LDS Stake Center, U.S. Hwy. 64, in Kirtland.

Jamia "Mickey" L. McKinley

Jamia "Mickey" L. McKinley, of Farmington, passed away Tuesday, May 20, 2008, in Farmington. She was born March 23, 1932, in Jenkins, Ky., to James and Raola Hughes. She has lived in Farmington since 1977.
Jamia was the wife of Frank McKinley and the mother of Charles "Chuck" Stewart, who survive her. Also surviving Mickey are a stepson, F. Darrell McKinley and wife, Nancy, of Kitty Hawk, N.C.; a sister, Martha Arnett, of Ridgefield, Wash.; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Mickey was a wonderful free spirit who loved the wide open spaces. May her spirit now rest in peace eternal.

Joe D. Montoya

Mr. Joe D. Montoya, 77, passed away Saturday, July 5, 2008, in Aztec, following a lengthy illness. He was born Sept. 16, 1930, in Chromo, Colo., to Jose and Suzanna Montoya.
He was a Seaman in the United States Navy for 12 years, and worked for General Electric for 27 years. Joe enjoyed fishing, hunting, gardening and repairing things.
Joe was preceded in death by his parents, Jose and Suzanna Montoya; brother Belarmino Montoya, and granddaughter Melissa Wagher.
Joe is survived by his life partner, Marge Wagher; sons, Chris (Carol) Montoya, Mark (Joanie) Montoya, Tim (Marcy) Montoya, Tracy (Brittany) Montoya, Ron (Connie) Wagher and Tom (Jennifer) Wagher; daughters, Debbie (Van) Welch and Lucinda (JR) Gresham; sisters, Maxine Lattin, Peggy Vautier and Alice Contreras; and brother, Ray Montoya; 22 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
Public visitation will be from 2 to 5 p.m. today, Thursday, July 10, at Cope Memorial Aztec Chapel, 400 S. Main Ave., in Aztec. Rosary will follow at 7 p.m. at St. Joseph's Catholic Church, 500 N. Mesa Verde Ave., in Aztec.
Christian Mass will be at 11 a.m. Friday, July 11, at St. Joseph's Catholic Church, with Father Dan Cassius as celebrant. Christian burial will be at 10 a.m. Saturday, July 12, at Hilltop Cemetery in Pagosa Springs, Colo.

Laura Lea (Hicks) Swann

Laura Lea (Hicks) Swann, 52, of Farmington, passed away Saturday, July 19, 2008, at the VA Hospital in Albuquerque. She was born Jan. 5, 1956, in Durango, Colo., to Evelyn and Kenneth Hicks of Farmington.
Laura was preceded in death by her father, Kenneth Hicks, in 2003; her niece, Candace Mason, in 2006; and her granddaughter, Darshala Graves, in 2006.
Laura is survived by her husband, Kenneth Swann of Farmington; her daughters, Tina James and husband, Steve, of Arenzville, Ill., and Tamara Stief of O'Fallon, Ill.; and her son, Donald Swann and wife, Tina, of Fairview Heights, Ill. She also is survived by her sisters, Sheryl Furtado and husband, Dan, of Farmington, Linda Frick and husband, Dave, of South Bend, Ind., and Lenette Behrends and husband, Marvin, of Clifton, Ill.; as well as seven grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren, nine nephews and five nieces.
Laura enjoyed working on her crafts, shopping with her mother and visiting with friends and relatives.
Cremation has taken place and a memorial service will be held at a later date.

Mary M. Smith
Jan. 24, 1926 - July 28, 2008
Mary M. Smith, 82, of Bloomfield, went home to be with her Father in heaven Sunday, July 20, 2008, surrounded by her loving family. She was born Jan. 24, 1926, in Tooele, Utah, to Fad and Clara McDaniel.
She married Floyd Hap Smith on Nov. 19, 1945, in Durango, Colo. They moved to Silverton, where Hap was a miner and Mary was a homemaker. Mary and Hap then moved to Bloomfield where they spent the rest of their years. Mary worked for the Bloomfield School system for several years.
She is survived by three sons, Russell (Lea) Smith, Roy Smith and Scott Smith, all of Bloomfield; a very special aunt, Mary Downing and also her brother, Herbert McDaniel of Bloomfield. She left behind a legacy of grandchildren, Eric (Kathi) Smith, Krista (Jason) Chesnut, Amanda (Norman) Faver, Shawn (Dorene) Bohannon, Anthony (Sara) Bohannon, and Scott (Tina) Bohannon. Mary also is survived by her great-grandchildren, Daison Shockley, Jaci and Kyler Munkres, Tanner Chesnut, Taylor and Drew Smith, Denton and Jentry Faver, Kenneth, Alexis, Rachel, Michael, Evan and Tessa Bohannon.
Mary was preceded in death by her loving husband, Hap Smith, and her brother, Fera McDaniel.
The family would like to extend a very special thank you to her longtime caregivers, Dawn Gardner and Judy Burnson. Mary's last days were spent at Crane's Roost in Aztec, who provided great care and comfort.
