Houston Bradberry
Services: Graveside service will be at 2 p.m. Monday at Floyd Cemetery.
Houston Bradberry, 65, of Portales died Friday, Dec. 5, 2003, at Roosevelt General Hospital in Portales.
He was born Sept. 18, 1938, in Arp, Texas, to Elfreda “Peaches” and Seibert Bradberry.
Mr. Bradberry grew up in east Texas. For the majority of his life he lived in the Kilgore area where he worked in the oil fields. In about 1990 he moved to Portales to be near his mother. He had been in failing health for a number of years.
He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Robert McClellan, who died in 1985.
Survivors include his life partner, Julie Webb of Portales; two sons and daughters-in-law, Houston Shane and Tammy Bradberry of Omaha, Neb., and Toby D. and Marnie Bradberry of Lubbock, Texas; three grandchildren, Taylor Bradberry, Cameron Bradberry and Shane Bradberry.
Scott Reeves and Toby Bradberry will officiate at the services.
All friends will serve as honorary pallbearers.
Wheeler Mortuary of Portales will handle arrangements.

Alfred Crawford, 93
Mr. Alfred Crawford, 93, of Portales died Thursday, Dec. 4, 2003, at Plains Regional Medical Center in Clovis.
He was born on July 21, 1910, in Peacock, Texas, in Stonewall County, to Mary Elizabeth and A.A. Crawford.
He came to New Mexico on horseback in 1926, picking cotton along the way to earn money. He met Ruth Blasingale while he was picking cotton in Portales. A year later he went back home where he stayed a year before deciding to work his way back to Portales. He married Ruth Blasingale on June 10, 1932, in Portales. He drove a truck in the area buying and selling hay and broom corn. He was a member of the First Assembly of God Church in Portales. Family members said he was a good domino player, and enjoyed the fellowship and fun of the Senior Citizens Centers where he played dominoes and danced.
He was preceded in death by his parents; three brothers, Floyd, Tom and Dick Crawford; four sisters, Mae Joiner, Sis Lay, Ida Smith and Lula Crawford; a son, Alford Crawford; and by his wife, Ruth.
Survivors include two sons, Robert Crawford (and wife, Joyce) of Portales and Ray Crawford (Shizu) of Spring Valley, Calif.; a daughter, Bettye Buller (Camon) of Farmington; 10 grandchildren; and 17 great-grandchildren.
The Rev. Jim Maxwell and Glen Fields will officiate the services.
Burial will be at Portales Cemetery.
Pallbearers will be Scott Crawford, Ken Carlson, Glen Fields, Lupe Marquez, J.R. Tivis and Lloyd Banks.
Honorary pallbearers are all of his grandchildren and the members of the Portales and Melrose Senior Citizens.
Arrangements are by Wheeler Mortuary of Portales.
Services are at 10 a.m. Saturday at Trinity Family Center in Portales.

Leroy Hunton, 81
Leroy Hunton, 81, of Clovis, a retired building contractor, died Thursday, Dec. 4, 2003.
He was born on Jan. 8, 1922, in Clovis to Herschel and Letta Lemley Hunton.
He was a 1940 graduate of Clovis High School and attended Texas Tech University. He served in the Army Air Force during World War II. He played tennis for Clovis High School, Texas Tech and the military and continued playing until his health failed. He was a member of Central Baptist Church and attended the Men’s Bible Class. Family members said he loved to hunt birds and game. He married Helen White on April 1, 1942, in Portales. He worked as a building contractor in Clovis and the surrounding area until his retirement in 1985.
He was preceded by his parents; a son, Jack; and a sister, Veneta Wheeler.
Survivors include his wife; three sons, Leroy Brett Hunton (and wife, Melanie), Joe Hunton (Leslie), all of Albuquerque, and Roy Jim Hunton (Kelli) of Odessa, Texas; a daughter, Johna Bishop (Tom) of Powhatten, Va.; and six grandchildren.
Mike Eberhardt will officiate the services.
Military honors will be performed by the Cannon Air Force Base Honor Guard.
Honorary pallbearers are Brent Webber, Bob Howard, Matt Aker and Randy Harris.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Central Baptist Church Building Fund.
Arrangements are by Muffley Funeral Home of Clovis.
Services are at 2 p.m. Saturday at Lawn Haven Memorial Gardens in Clovis.

Moises Garcia, 49
Moises Christian Garcia, 49, of Clovis died Tuesday, Nov. 25, 2003, in Brunswick, Ga.
He was born May 14, 1954, in Clovis to Jose Angel and Rebecca Aragon Garcia.
He worked as a construction laborer. He was a member of Our Lady of Guadalupe in Clovis.
He was preceded in death by his mother; a brother, Erlindo Garcia; and a sister-in-law, Christina Garcia.
He is survived by his father of Portales; a sister, Adela Goodman of Bernalillo; four brothers, Jesse Garcia, Joe Garcia Jr. and David Garcia, all of Clovis, and Billy Garcia of Long Beach, Calif.
Deacon Daniel Chavez will officiate the services.
Burial will be at Mission Garden of Memories in Clovis.
Arrangements are by Muffley Funeral Home of Clovis.
Services are at 10 a.m. today at Mission Garden of Memories in Clovis.

Glenda Samford, 48
Glenda Sue Samford, 48, of Mayhill died Sunday, Nov. 30, 2003.
She was born on Feb. 1, 1955, in Portales to W.C. and Veona Faye Day Poff.
She had been a resident of Mayhill for the past 23 years, moving there from Portales. Family members said everybody who knew her has a piece of her in their hearts.
She was preceded in death by her parents and four sisters, Jean Squares, Nita Stephens, Sherry Darlene Poff and Laura Ellen Poff.
Survivors include her husband, Marvin A. Samford Jr. of the home; three daughters, Trenity Jean Hill, Della R. Samford and Audrey Faye Samford; three brothers, Delbert Poff (and wife, Barbara), Carey Poff (Gayle) and Lynn Poff; two sisters, Kaye Parrish of Portales and Linda Catanzaro (George) of Clovis; six nieces; four nephews; adopted kids, Jeremy Malett, Scott Miller, Frank Talley, Moses Mendoza, Jolena Gonzales, Caitie Taylor, Kevin Orr and Jessica Virden.
Charles Walker will officiate the services.
Arrangements are by Alamogordo Funeral Home of Alamogordo.
Services are at 11 a.m. Saturday Dec. 6, 2003, at the Mayhill Church of Christ.

Onita Schillings, 74
Mrs. Onita Schillings, 74, of Clovis died Tuesday, Dec. 2, 2003, at Plains Regional Medical Center in Clovis.
She was born on Nov. 3, 1929, in Floydada, Texas, to Zela Mae and Leland W. Garrett.
Her family moved to the Spur, Texas, area when she was a child. She married Spencer Schillings on May 12, 1947, in Dickens, Texas. For most of her adult life she lived in Odessa, Texas. In the late 1950s and early 1960s they lived in Portales. She returned to Clovis in 1996 to be near her children and sisters. Family members said she was an outgoing lady and made friends easily. She was very artistic and color conscious, had a knack in home decor and liked making scrapbooks.
She was preceded in death by her parents; a sister, Pauline Marie Garrett; and by her husband, Spencer Schillings.
Survivors include two sons, G. Boyd Schillings (and companion, Kris Hicken) of Meeker, Col. and Guy William Schillings of Alexandria, La.; two daughters, Sharla S. Schillings and Misty M. Schillings, both of Clovis; two grandchildren, Silkor Schillings and Madison Garrett; two brothers, Pat Garrett of Portales and Curtis Garrett of Amarillo; and three sisters, Susie Slack, Diane Ruther and Donna Kinkade, all of Clovis.
Jake Taylor will officiate the services.
Arrangements are by Wheeler Mortuary of Portales.
Services are at 2 p.m. Saturday at Portales Cemetery.

Lloyd A. Hitt, 75
Lloyd A. Hitt, 75, of Lubbock, died Tuesday, Nov. 25, 2003.
He was born on Aug. 11, 1928, in Rogers, to Hobert and Ione Hitt
He graduated from Dora High School and served four years in the U.S. Air Force. He married Ethel Shearer on April 14, 1951. He pursued a lifelong career in farm equipment sales and farming. He was a member of Monterey Baptist Church of Lubbock and spent many hours witnessing for Jesus.
Survivors include his wife; one sister, Freeda Walker of Clovis; two children, Roger Hitt of Lubbock and Sharon Blackmon of Happy, Texas; five grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
The Rev. Jim Brown will officiate the services. Burial will be at Peaceful Gardens Memorial Park.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations to the Walter Hoving Home, P.O. Box 194, Garrison, N.Y. 10524.
Arrangements were by Resthaven Funeral Home of Lubbock.

Gladys Roberts, 92
Mrs. Gladys Roberts, 92, of Lubbock, died Saturday, Nov. 29, 2003, at her home.
She was born on June 5, 1911, in Duke, Okla., to Mr. and Mrs. Jake Jones
She lived her early life in Oklahoma. As a teenager, her family moved to Texas. She married P.K. Roberts on Jan. 21, 1948, in Clovis. Shortly after their marriage they moved to Portales and established Valley Courts, which was a fruit and vegetable market combined with a small motel. Later they opened Roberts Mercantile. In the mid 1960s they moved their business to a market on the highway to Clovis. She attended the Church of God. Shortly after her husband died, she moved to her daughter’s home in South America. About 1982, they returned to Portales and then in 1996 they moved to Lubbock.
She was preceded in death by her parents; five sisters; a step-son, Jerry Roberts; and a step-daughter, Polly Cook; and her husband, P. K. Roberts.
Survivors include a son, P. K. Roberts Jr. (and wife, Gail) of Austin, Texas; a daughter, Frances Oglesby of Lubbock; two step-daughters, Jeanette Sanderson of Flower Mound, Texas, and Gloria Stangle (E.C.) of St. George, Utah; three grandchildren, Burt Oglesby, Elissa Roberts and Jake Roberts; two great-grandchildren, Ronald and Kimberly Oglesby; and a great-great-grandchild, Madison Marie Oglesby.
Scott P. Reeves will officiate the services.
Burial will be at Portales Cemetery.
Honorary pallbearers will be all family and friends.
Arrangements are by Wheeler Mortuary of Portales.
Services are at 10 a.m. today at Portales Cemetery.

Hilda Smith, 87
Mrs. Hilda Smith, 87, of Levelland, Texas, died Sunday, Nov. 30, 2003, in Portales.
She was born on Dec. 31, 1915, in Yorktown, Texas.
She lived in Portales and Levelland for many years. She was a member of St. Paul Lutheran Church. Family members said she loved quilting, embroidery and gardening.
She was preceded in death by her parents; three brothers, Alfred, Henry and Willie Storch; two sisters, Anna Esch and Adlene Gras; and a grandson, Michael Fisher.
Survivors include a son, Alfred Smith of Floyd; two daughters, Shirley Riley of Albuquerque and Wilma Fisher of Idamay, W. Va.; two brothers, Emil Storch of Levelland and Melvin Storch of Portales; a sister, Helen Eastman of San Antonio; seven grandchildren; and 15 great-grandchildren.
The Rev. Michael Holmes will officiate the services.
Burial will be at noon Wednesday at the Wilson Cemetery in Wilson, Texas.
Pallbearers will be David Terry, Johnny Riley II, Carl McDonald, Herman Gras, Sonny, Kendall and Jimmie Esch and Johnnie and Dennis Joe Storch.
Arrangements are by George C. Price Funeral Directors of Levelland.
Services are at 10 a.m. (CST) Wednesday at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Levelland, Texas.

James Pettus, 61
Mr. James Pettus, 61, of Portales, died Thursday, Nov. 27, 2003, at Roosevelt General Hospital in Portales.
He was born Oct. 16, 1942, at Owensboro, Ky., to Rose and Ed Pettus.
When he was 13 the family moved to Carlsbad where they lived about two years until moving to Floyd. He was a 1961 graduate of Floyd High School. Shortly after graduating he began working at the Portales News Tribune and retired in 1994 as the mechanical superintendent. After retiring he made his used car business, Pettus Country Motors, his full time occupation.
He began calling square dances in 1972 and also enjoyed country western dancing. He was a member of the Kiwanis Club for many years.
He was preceded in death by his father, Ed Pettus, in 1974.
Survivors include his wife, Wanda Pettus; three daughters, Janet Kay (and husband Larry) Shearer of Portales, Shawnie Archuletta of Albuquerque and Michelle (and husband Kerry) Kampschroeder of Denton, Texas; two grandchildren, Lindsey and Lauren Ashley Archuletta; his mother of Portales; two brothers, Edward Pettus of Amarillo and Charles Pettus of Portales; six sisters, Lorraine White and Jackie LeClear, both of Clovis, Jeanette Hicks of Lubbock, Sally Ann Salsbury and Carol Rogers, both of Winsboro, Texas, and Kaye Grubbs of Portales.
The Revs Harry Riser and Tobin Hitt will officiate the funeral service.
Burial will be in Portales Cemetery.
Memorials may be made to the First United Methodist Church, St. Helen Catholic Church or to the American Cancer Society.
Arrangements are by Wheeler Mortuary of Portales.
Services are at 10 a.m. Monday at First United Methodist Church in Portales.

Nettie Rebecca Millar, 95
Nettie Rebecca Millar, 95, of Clovis, died Nov. 26, 2003, at Laurel Plains Nursing Home.
She was born June 25, 1908, in Quitaque, Texas, to John and Lucy Parks Lowe.
She married James Guy Millar and came to Clovis in 1991. She was of the Baptist faith.
Survivors include a daughter, Jane (and husband Jimmy) Scott of Portales; a son, Jimmy Millar of Ruidoso; a sister, Faye Burkett of Clovis; seven grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband; her parents; a son, John Wayne Millar; three brothers; and two sisters.
Cremation has taken place.
Arrangements are by Muffley Funeral Home of Clovis.
No services will be held.

Gladys Roberts, 92
Gladys Roberts, 92, formerly of Portales, died Saturday morning, Nov. 29, 2003, at Lubbock.
Services are pending with Wheeler Mortuary of Portales.

Winona Pierce Hicks
Services: 10 a.m. Saturday at Mission Garden of Memories in Clovis.
Mrs. Winona Pierce Hicks, 88, of Clovis died Nov. 27, 2003, at Plains Regional Medical Center in Clovis.
She was born on Nov. 6, 1915, in Hollis, Okla., to Rueben Garfield and Ivy Lee Burrows Pierce.
She moved to Clovis in 1934 from Hollis and married Jason Hicks on July 20, 1935, in Clovis. She was a bookkeeper before retiring from Clovis Printing in 1974. She was a member of 16th and Pile Church of Christ.
She was preceded in death by her husband and her parents.
Survivors include two sons, Darrell Lee (and wife Lorie) Hicks of Socorro and Donald Floyd (and wife Sharon) Hicks of Clovis; four brothers, R.G. Pierce of Logan, Tex Pierce of Keller, Texas, and Gary Pierce and Danny Pierce, both of Hollis; two sisters, Helen Robinson and Linda Pierce, both of Pampa, Texas; and four grandchildren and two great grandchildren.
Jim Gammon will officiate the services.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Christian Children’s Home in Portales.
Arrangements are by Steed-Todd Funeral Home of Clovis.

James Pettus, 61, of Portales died Thursday morning, Nov. 27, 2003, at Roosevelt General Hospital in Portales.
Services are pending at Wheeler Mortuary in Portales.
