David “Andy” Nichols

Services: 2 p.m. Saturday at Wheeler Mortuary Chapel in Portales

Mr. David “Andy” Nichols, 58, died Monday, Jan. 30, 2006, at Roosevelt General Hospital in Portales.
He was born Oct. 29, 1947, in Hobbs to Ruby and Ervin Nichols. He married Brenda “B.J.” Vantrease on Oct. 29, 1965.

He attended Portales High School and in 1962 began working for Hometown Foods as an associate in the meat market. Later he worked on a local bread delivery route. He also worked as a plumber and pipefitter and was a member of the Local Union 412 for many years.

His hobbies included fishing, cookouts and watching Western movies. Family members said he loved his grandchildren and enjoyed socializing with family and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents and his wife.
He is survived by a son, Michael Nichols (and wife, Candice) of Portales; two daughters, Jenee Raiche (Steven) of Portales, Lisa Nichols (and fiancé, Jeff McGarvey) of Cleburn, Texas; nine grandchildren; three brothers: Richard Nichols and Hampy Nichols, both of Gulfport, Miss., and Eugene Nichols of Branson, Mo.; three sisters, Pat Mathis of Portales, Laverne Obenhause of Bellfair, Wash., and Gail North of Kingsland, Texas.

Honorary pallbearers will be all grandchildren

The Rev. John Marshall will officiate services.
Burial is at Restlawn Cemetery in Portales.

Arrangements are by Wheeler Mortuary of Portales.

Frank Teti
Services: 10 a.m. Feb. 18, Monterey, Calif., cemetery.
Professor Francis Michael Teti, 68, died Sunday, Jan. 29, 2006, in Portales.
He was born on Feb. 5, 1937, in Utica, N.Y., to Frank T. and Nella Teti.
He spent his 36-year professional career as a professor of National Security Affairs at the Naval Postgraduate school in Monterey, Calif., where he also served as acting department chair, family members said. He also taught as an adjunct professor for colleges that included Monterey Peninsula College, Chapman University, Golden Gate University and Monterey Institute of International Studies, where he also served as academic dean and vice president. He received numerous awards for excellence in teaching during his professional career. He retired to Portales in 2003.
Survivors include his wife Theresa (Terry) Teti of Portales; brothers Vito Teti of Fullerton, Calif. and Gary Teti of Sylmar, Calif.; sons Stowe Teti of Kensington, Md., Trent Teti of Los Angeles and Drew Teti of Chicago; step-sons Charles Stockwell of Portales and William Stockwell of Roseville, Calif.; one granddaughter, one step-granddaughter, five step-grandsons, two nephews and two grand nieces.
A scholarship award has been established in his name at the Naval Postgraduate School as a tribute. Family members ask donations be made to this fund, in lieu of flowers. Information is at:

Clovie Chunn
Services: 2 p.m. Thursday at Wheeler Mortuary Chapel.
Clovie S. Chunn, 97, of Portales, died Monday, Jan. 30, 2006, at Heartland Continuing Care Center in Portales.
He was born to Thulia May and Scott L. Chunn on Nov. 11, 1908, in Tom Green County, Texas.
He came to Elida in 1910 by covered wagon with his parents and older sister. In his early 20s, he went back to Texas to work in the oil fields near Longview. He married Nola Stringer on June 21, 1930, in Conroe, Texas. He farmed and ranched in the Arch area until the mid 1950s. They moved to Portales and then in 1958 bought a ranch at Elida.
On June 16, 1994, he was married to Esther Brooks.
Mr. Chunn was preceded in death by his parents, two sisters, Katie Davenport and Marshall Singleton and a son, Jimmy “Bo” Chunn.
He is survived by his wife of Portales, one son, Clovie Chunn (and wife Valerie) of Portales, three daughters Carmen Woods (Roger) of Rogersville, Mo., Chari Wood (Ronnie) of Roswell, and Sue Inge (Blake) of Dora, 10 grandchildren, 24 great-grandchildren, 13 great-great-grandchildren, a brother, Jimmie Scott Chunn of Bledsoe, Texas, four nieces and one nephew as well as two step-daughters Glenda Creighton (Gene) of Elida and Billy Lou Wooley (Fred) of Denver City, Texas, and several step grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Rev. Dan Holt will officiate services. The family will receive friends at the mortuary from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. on Wednesday.
Pallbearers will be Jay Alexander, Jerry Alexander, Ricky Chunn, Wade Butts, Miller Butts, Danny Inge and Johnny Inge.
Honorary pallbearers will be Joy and Wendell Best, Betty and Sid Price, Annetta and B. J. Byrd, Lena Nutt, Tazley Sprinkle, Candace Christesson, Carol Fine, Shannon Rogers, Linda Howard, Gay Strong, Viola Valdez, Frances Wall and the staff of Heartland Continuing Care Center.
Arrangements are by Wheeler Mortuary in Portales.

George W. Nelson
Services: 10 a.m. Thursday at the Chapel, 1500 Thornton St., Clovis
George W. Nelson, 78, of Portales died Thursday, Jan. 26, 2006 at his daughter’s home in Glendale, Ariz.
He was born Feb. 22, 1927, in Erwin, Tenn., to Joseph Henry and Jenovne McCurry Nelson. He married Nettie Erickson on Dec. 9, 1966, in Reno, Nev. He retired from the U.S. Army in 1966 and owned George’s Home Maintenance.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife and two brothers.
He is survived by a son, DeWayne Nelson (and wife, Cindy) of Vancouver, Wash., a daughter, Betty Tackett (Dale) of Glendale, Ariz.; a sister, Evelyn Haynes of Tennessee, four grandchidren and 12 great grandchildren.
The Rev. Dean Turvaville will officiate.
Entombment will be in the Plains Sanctuary Mausoleum at Mission Garden of Memories.
Arrangements are by Muffley Funeral Home.

Loretta Faye Dudley

Services: 6 p.m. Monday at Steed-Todd Chapel.

Mrs. Loretta Faye Dudley, 59, of Clovis died Thursday, Jan. 26, 2006, at her home.

She was born Feb. 11, 1946, in Portales to Clemmons and Annie Capps Swann. She was a longtime resident of Clovis, from Portales as a young girl. She was a member of Prince Street Baptist Church and family members said she loved to water ski.

She was proceded in death by her parents and a sister, Sharon

She is survived by two sons, Floyd Dudley (and wife, Teresa) and Larry Dudley, all of Clovis; six grandchildren, Trevor and Celeste Dudley, Justin and Sarah Ruther and Jessica and Amber Fulgham; seven sisters, Betty Brown (Dwight) of Reserve, Venoy Price, Marlene Gibson and Evie Thornton (Roy), all of Clovis, Peggy McPherson of Albuquerque, Doris Pijanowski (P.J.) of Bossier City, La., and Eva Gillean of Hugo, Okla.; two brothers, Alvin Swann (Thelma) of Broadview and Paul Swann of Texico, New Mexico; and numerous nieces and nephews

The Rev. Dean Turvaville will officiate services.
Cremation will take place.

Carolyn Maria Chapin

Services: 11 a.m. Monday at South Park Cemetery in Roswell.

Carolyn Maria Chapin, 51, of Melrose, died Tuesday, Jan. 24, 2006.

She was born Aug. 24, 1954, in Roswell, to Grover and Pearl Richardson. She married Marvin Chapin on Nov. 27, 1984, in Roswell.

She was a loving wife, mother, grandmother and sister, who was the only constant in her family’s life, family members said.

She was preceded in death by a sister, Beverly Ann Richardson Engleston.

She is survived by two sons, John Noble of Albuquerque, Jerry Noble of Durango, Colo.; three daughters, Nonia Noble of Melrose, Debbi Noble of Portales, Kylee Noble of Melrose; three brothers, Terry and James Richardson, both of Roswell, Robert Richardson of Breckenridge, Texas; three sisters, Nancy and Peggy Richardson, both of Roswell, and Shirley Gadbury of Roswell; and fourteen grandchildren.

Arrangements are by LaGrone Funeral Chapel in Roswell.

Mattie Gushwa

Services: 10 a.m. (CST) Saturday at Indiana Avenue Baptist Church in Lubbock.

Mattie Gushwa, 83, of Lubbock died Tuesday, Jan. 24, 2006.
She was born Sept. 25, 1922, in Richland Springs, Texas. She met Charles Gushwa while working as a teller at First National Bank of Portales, where she worked for many years. They were married Feb. 20, 1947. Her hobbies included sewing and cooking. They moved to Lubbock in 1991 and became members of Indiana Avenue Baptist Church.

Family members said she loved helping, counseling and cooking for the university students in her church.

She was preceded in death by a brother, Don Huddleston; and a sister, Peggy McAlister.

Survivors include her husband; a daughter, Radene Fuller (and husband, Jim) of Lubbock, a sister, Patsy Block (Burl) of Padre Island, Texas, a granddaughter, Cassandra Brisson (Dustin); and numerous nieces and nephews.
The Rev. Jim Gerlt will officiate services.

Burial will take place at 2 p.m. at Portales Cemetery.
The family will receive friends from 6 p.m. to 7 p.m. (CST) today at Resthaven Funeral Home in Lubbock.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorials to the Building Fund of Indiana Avenue Baptist Church.

Arrangements are by Resthaven Funeral Home of Lubbock.

Santos Sena

Services: 2:30 p.m. today at St. Helen Catholic Church in Portales

Santos Sena, 2, of Portales died Tuesday, Jan. 24, 2006, at Plains Regional Medical Center.

He was born April 28, 2003, in Clovis, to Sonia DeLaCruz and Ricky Sena.

Survivors include his mother and step-father, Sonia DeLaCruz and Lupe Chavez of Portales; his father, Ricky Sena of Clovis; two brothers, Ramon Sena and A. J. Sena, both of Portales; two sisters, Sonya Chavez and Julie Chavez, both of Portales; grandparents, Becky and David Sena of Portales, Peggy Sena of Clovis and Irene and Lupe Chavez of Albuquerque; great-grandparents, Dora Wall and Leopoldo Martinez, both of Portales, Jerry Tapia of Clovis and Ruby Chavez of Albuquerque; aunts, Patricia Romero (and husband, Orlando) of Amarillo, Analisa Sena of Portales, Melanie Chavez and Darlene Chavez, both of Albuquerque; and uncles, Abel DeLaCruz (Liza) of Portales, Matthew and Tomas Chavez, both of Albuquerque, and Antonio and Johnny Sena, both of Clovis; and three cousins, Adrian DeLaCruz, Marcus Romero and Noah Sena.

Father James McGowan will officiate services.
Burial will take place at Portales Cemetery

Pallbearers will be Lupe Chavez, Orlando Romero, Ramon Sena, David Sena, A.J. Sena, Matthew Chavez and Tomas Chavez.

Arrangements are by Wheeler Mortuary of Portales.

Wanda Dorice Nuckolls

Services: 2 p.m. until 4 p.m. Friday at Steed-Todd Funeral Home.

Wanda Dorice Nuckolls, 74, of Las Vegas, N.M., died Tuesday, Jan. 24., 2006, at Las Vegas Medical Center Nursing Home.

She was born April 23, 1931, in Dibble, Okla. to Harris and Dollie Powell Higgins.

She married Robert G. Nuckolls on April 13, 1954, in Portales. She was a member of the 21st Street Church of Christ for most of her life.

Family members remember her for her love of life, quiet sense of humor, graciousness and her belief in God. She was also a devoted wife, loving mother and grandmother, family members said.

She is preceded in death by her parents and three sisters, Virginia Augusta, Rosezell Putnam, and Maydell Hayes.
She is survived by her husband; a son, Grant Nuckolls (and wife, Vickie) of Clovis; a granddaughter, Tammi Martell (Jeff) of Mountain Home, Idaho; two great-granddaughters, Cayley and Karlie Martell of Mountain Home, Idaho; a brother, Donnavin Higgins (Vonda) of Amber, Okla.; three sisters, Delores Moore (Kenton) of Chickasha, Okla., Freda Henson (Leonard) of Mustang, Okla., and Estelle Lewis of Oklahoma City, Okla.; and numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins.
Burial will be at Santa Fe National Cemetery in Santa Fe.
Honorary pallbearers will be Robert Higgins, Kenton Moore, Leonard Henson, Jeff Martell, Carl Reaves, Coy Burrell, Toby Phipps, Earl Scott and Leon Higgins.

Arrangements are by Steed-Todd Funeral Home.

Santos Sena

Santos Sena, 2, of Portales died Tuesday, Jan. 24, 2006, at Plains Regional Medical Center.

Clarence Kirksey
Services: No services are planned.
Clarence Truman Kirksey, 95, of Odessa, Texas, died Saturday, Jan. 14, 2006.
He was born on Jan. 13, 1911, in Blanket, Texas, to John Edward Kirksey and Sarah Angeline Goates. In 1927, Clarence and his brothers drove a covered wagon from Brownwood, Texas, to Portales. A resident of Odessa, Texas, since 1958, he owned and operated Globe Cleaners until retirement in 1981. He served on the Medical Center Hospital Board 21 years and was active in the Breakfast Optimist Club. He was a member of Crescent Park Baptist Church, serving as a deacon and a Sunday school teacher. Family members said he enjoyed bowling, woodworking and writing autobiographical short stories for publication.
He was preceded in death by his first wife, Ruby Hatch Kirksey.
Survivors include his brothers, Jack, Noble and Ed; children, Ray Deane Card, Viola Jane Kirskey, Karon Lee Kirksey and Angeline Johnston; step-daughters, Julia Gryder and Jayne Brazeal; five grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and wife, Jessi Mclamore Kirksey.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks donations to the church’s general fund.
Arrangements are by Frank W. Wilson Funeral Directors in Odessa.
Mike Thorne
Services: To be held at a later date.
Michael E. “Mike” Thorne, 71, of Clovis died Sunday, Jan. 22, 2006, at Heartland Continuing Care Center in Portales.
He was born March 17, 1934, in Oklahoma City, Okla., to Robert T. and Lois Vance Lamb. He was a respiratory therapist and former member of the Eagles, Odd Fellows and Kiwanis. He married Shirlee Jean Mitchell on Sept. 14, 1957, in Cheyenne, Wyo.
He was preceded by his parents.
Survivors include his wife, Jean Thorne; daughters, Caroline Sue and Melissa Foster of Tucumcari; son, Clayton Thorne of Minnesota; brother, Roger Lamb of California; and sister, Betty DeAnn Lamb of California.
Cremation has taken place.
Arrangements are by Muffley Funeral Home of Clovis.

Brenda Vantrease
Services: Will be held at a later date.
Brenda “B. J.” Vantrease, 59, of Portales, died Sunday, Jan. 22, 2006, at her home in Portales.
She was born Sept. 30, 1946, in Poplar Bluff, Mo., to Betty Jane and John Thomas Vantrease. She grew up in Dora and graduated from high school in 1965. She married Andy Nichols on Oct. 29, 1965, in Portales. She and her mother ran the Dora Café for a number of years. She was also employed at Roosevelt General Hospital and later at Portales Valley Mills. In 1987, she moved to Missouri to care for her ailing father. After his death she returned to Portales to make her home.
While in Missouri she was employed as a certified nursing aide. She had been disabled for some time. Family members said she was a devoted mother and grandmother who enjoyed Christmas. She also enjoyed reading romance and western novels and watching late-night television.
She was preceded in death by both of her parents.
Survivors include her husband, David A. “Andy” Nichols of Portales; son, Michael Nichols (and wife, Candice) of Portales; daughters, Jenee Raiche (Steve) of Portales and Lisa Nichols (Jeff McGarvey) of Cleburne, Texas; grandchildren, Samantha Eminger, Timothy Eminger, Mellanie Nichols, Larissa Nichols, Ariel Nichols, Brittany Shae Nichols, Stephanie Brae Nichols, Jonathan Raiche and Jaden Briar Nichols; brothers, Jerry Lee Rose and Harold D. Rose, both of Portales; and sisters, Sharon Vantrease-Eagleton and Sheila Vantrease both of Grand Rapids, Mich.
Arrangements are by Wheeler Mortuary of Portales.

Nevaeh Amber Lopez

Services: 4 p.m. Tuesday at the Portales Cemetery
Nevaeh Amber Lopez, infant, died Monday, Jan. 16, 2006, in Grants.

She was born Monday, Jan. 16, 2006, in Grants.
She was the daughter of Asia Skye Pena and Jake Lopez of Portales.

A graveside service will be held.

The Rev. Pete Jaramillo will officiate.

Arrangements are Wheeler Mortuary of Portales.

Wilfred Reyes Salas

Services: 2 p.m. Friday at Our Lady of Guadalupe Church.
Wilfred Reyes Salas, 19, Clovis died Sunday, Jan. 15, 2006, at Covenant Medical Center in Lubbock.

He was born Oct. 26, 1986, to Wilfred and Velma Quintana Salas in Portales. He worked as a milker at a local dairy.
He is preceded in death by his grandfather, Demetrio Salas, and cousin, Richard Salas.

He is survived by his parents, a brother, Victor Robledo of Clovis; two grandmothers, Rose Garcia (Isidro) of Clovis and Celina Quintana of Clovis; a grandfather, Pat Quintana of Texico; a companion, Vanessa Baca of Clovis; numerous cousins, aunts and uncles.

A Rosary will be held at 1:30 p.m. Friday at Our Lady of Guadalupe.

Father Sotero Sena will officiate services.

Burial will follow at Mission Garden of Memories.
Pallbearers will be Hugo Ochoa, Louie Delgado, Antonio Enriques, Johnathan Carver, David Griego, Joo Yung Han and Joel Jass.

Honorary pallbearers will be Edward, Orlando and Demetrio Salas, friends and family.

Memorial Contributions may be made to Wilfred Salas Family Fund c/o Citizens Bank of Clovis.

Arrangements are by Muffley Funeral Home.
