Peggy Whomans, 81, died Thursday, March 9, 2006, at her residence in Portales.
Born July 11, 1924, in Salisbury, N.C., she was the daughter of Louise and Max Moorefield. She grew up in North Carolina and attended Catawaba College in Salisbury, then moved to New York City and taught dance at the Arthur Murray Studio for many years. She moved back to Salisbury and opened a private dance studio that she operated for 20 years. In 1968, she retired and moved to Alamagordo. Family members said she enjoyed art and crafts, traveling, camping and especially spending time in Timberon.
She was preceded in death by her parents and her sister, Dorothy McLean.
She is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, Max and Diane Pastor, and two grandchildren, Anthony James Pastor and Ryane Anderson Pastor, all of Portales.

Nell Musick

Nell Musick, 93, of Portales, died Wednesday, March 8, 2006, at her home.
She was born Nov. 19, 1912, in Inez to Laura and Tom Mullins.
A 1930 graduate of Rogers High School, she married Bill Musick on March 14, 1932, in Inez. She and her husband farmed and ranched in Rogers and Dora until he died. In 1965, she moved to Portales to make her home.
For several years, she was employed at the Portales Drug Store. She was a member of Third and Kilgore Church of Christ. She enjoyed crocheting and quilting, as well as cooking for her family and doing yard work, family members said. For a number of years, she was a member of the Roosevelt General Hospital Auxiliary. Family members said she prided herself on being very well groomed and immaculately dressed. She was well known for her auburn hair that was always perfectly combed.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, who died June 3, 1963; two brothers, Dooley and Ray Mullins; and a sister, Esther Mullins Troxiler.
She is survived by two sons, Kenneth Musick (and wife Mozelle) of Rogers and Leon Musick (Denise) of Dora; grandchildren Danny Mike Musick of Las Cruces, Gregory Lewis Musick of Seattle, Billy Frank Musick of Amarillo, Trina Marcell Morris (and Mike) of Clovis and Vicki Micheal Musick of Portales; two sisters, Polly Vistalli of Roseville, Calif., and Wilma Ferrell (Jake) of Portales, and several nieces and nephews.
Scott P. Reeves will officiate. Graveside services will be held.
Pablo Pena, Jimmy Neal Richards, Chuck Neece, Bobby Gresham, Greg Musick and Billy Musick will serve as pallbearers.
Honorary pallbearers will be Virginia Pena, Erma Pennington, Jimmy Mullin, Darrell Mullins, James Farrell, Danny Musick, Don Mosher, Bill Evans and Vista Care Hospice workers.

Mary M. Podsiadlik

Mary M. Podsiadlik, 51, of Clovis died Wednesday, March 8, 2006, at Roosevelt General Hospital in Portales. She was born Oct. 28, 1954, in Buffalo, N.Y.
She grew up in Buffalo, and in 1986 graduated from Kelsey Jenny Business College in San Diego. On June 12, 1988, in Las Vegas, Nev., she married Paul M. Podsiadlik. She was chief financial officer for Kelsey Jenny Business College and also taught math and computer science. She later managed properties for a short time. For the past six years, she owned and operated a candle-making business. Family members said she enjoyed writing cookbooks, watching cooking shows and spending time with her husband.
She was preceded in death by her parents.
She is survived by her husband of Clovis.

“Maydene” Porter Golden

Thelma “Maydene” Porter Golden, 68, died Sunday, March 5, 2006, in DeSoto, Texas.
She was born Sept. 4, 1937, to Alford P. Porter and Euna Nonnie O’Dell. She married Price Dowell Golden on April 14, 1961, in Rylie, Texas.
She was a retired employee of Alcott U.S.A.
She was preceded in death by her parents and brothers Henry C. Porter and Dalton Ray Porter.
She is survived by her husband; a son, Dowell Lynn Golden (and wife Stacy); her daughters Cheryl K. Hunt (Trent) and Elizabeth A. Norton (Kenny); a brother, Jesse Porter (Mildred) of Portales; a sister, Carolyn Harris (John) of Muleshoe; sisters-in-law Katherine Porter of Lovington and Marie Porter of Roswell; nine grandchildren; one great-granddaughter; and numerous nieces and nephews. She is also survived by Jerry and Carla Golden, Charles and Pat Golden, Carole Golden, and Donny and Nonny Stevall.
Clodie Armstrong Hurley

Clodie Armstrong Hurley, 87, died on Tuesday, March 7, 2006, in Albuquerque.
She was born March 12, 1918, in Wayne, Okla. She and her family came to Clovis when she was 13. A Clovis High School graduate, she lived in Clovis for 65 years and was a life-long member of First Baptist Church.
Family members said many will remember her from her years at Lucille’s Dress Shop in Hilltop Plaza, her 16 years as a school bus driver for Norvil Howell and her time as a deputy Curry County treasurer. She was an active member of First Baptist Church where she worked with children of all ages and taught a women’s Sunday school class for many years. She was director of the Girl’s Auxiliary and active in Women’s Missionary Union. Family members said she was devoted to her family and the Lord, living a life of extraordinary sacrifice and example. They said she maintained her sweet spirit throughout her long battle with Alzheimer’s disease, and she will be greatly missed.
She was preceded in death by her parents, C.E. “Bud” and Leona Thomas of Clovis; her first husband, Goebel Armstrong of Clovis; her second husband, Frank Hurley, who died in 1984; and two sisters, Martha Thomas of Oklahoma and Rosalie White of Bosque Farms.
She is survived by her sisters Mildred Baker and Lucille Matlock of Clovis; three daughters, Beverly Grow (and husband David) of Albuquerque, Linda Brill of Clovis and Carolyn Burch of Albuquerque; grandchildren Scott Cummings (Lisa), Tim Grow (Dede), Greg Leeder, Traci Rowton and Christy Combs (Corey), Brandy Dewbre; nine great-grandchildren, and one great-great-grandchild.
Rev. Dr. Herbert Bergstrom will officiate services. Visitation will take place from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. on Thursday at the funeral home. Interment at Mission Garden of Memories will follow the services.
Pallbearers will be Monte Matlock, Dennis Baker, Randy Williams, George Reiser, Scott Cummings and David Grow.
The family has requested memorial donations to the Baptist Children’s Home in Portales.

Donny Ray Melton

Donny Ray Melton, 24, of Lovington, died Saturday, March 4, 2006, at University Medical Center, Lubbock. He was born Oct. 10, 1981, in Portales, to Danny and Monica Melton.
A resident of the Baptist Children's Home in Portales for four years, he attended school in Lovington, graduating in 2000. He played on the Wildcat football team, was in the drama club, loved sports, music, movies, kids and his dog, “Blaze,” family members said. He was employed by Zia Park in Hobbs.
He is survived by his parents of Hobbs; a sister, April Melton of Hobbs; a nephew, Jonah Melton of Hobbs, and numerous aunts, uncles, cousins and a host of friends.
Pastor Tim Brown will officiate services. Visitation will be from 10 a.m. until 8 p.m. Thursday at Kirby-Smith-Rogers Funeral Home of Lovington.

Bill Melton

Billy Bryan Melton, 75, of Texico died Sunday, March 5, 2006, at his home.
He was born Sept. 26, 1930, in Lynn County, Texas, to Noble and Erminie Melton. He grew up in Crane, Texas, and Ozona, Texas, and was a graduate of Ozona High School. He married Sue Meinecke in 1951. They moved to Las Vegas, N.M., where he ranched with his father until 1965. He operated Melton Motor Co. from 1966 to 1977. He continued to ranch in Las Vegas, N.M., and later in Concho County, Texas, for several years.
Family members said he was a gentle and kind-hearted man who loved life and lived it to the fullest. They said he had great respect and admiration for animals, and spent many years raising and breeding horses. They said he made many friends as an avid collector of Western collectibles such as bits, spurs and saddles, and he enjoyed the outdoors, hard work and spending time with his family.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, his brother, Newell, and a brother-in-law, Ottis Sayes.
He is survived by his companion, Mary Ann Whitley of Texico and her daughter, Elizabeth Whitley of Beaumont, Texas; a sister, Delia Sayes of Bourbonnais, Ill.; two sons, Larry Melton of Ballinger, Texas, and Clay Melton of Texico; a daughter, Coralie Tidwell (and husband, Jimmy) of San Angelo, Texas; three grandchildren, Stormy Melton of Richland Springs, Texas, and Reid Melton and Rianne Lupardus, both of Midland, Texas.
The family suggests memorials be made to the American Cancer Society.

Tildon Arnold
Tildon Arnold, 84, of Arch died Sunday, March 5, 2006, at Roosevelt General Hospital in Portales.
He was born June 15, 1921, in Alamo to Diana Lorraine and Robert Jerome Arnold.
He worked on ranches around Santa Rosa for several years.
He moved to Arch to find work in 1940.
He married Imogene Riley on Feb. 14, 1942, in Portales.
He was inducted into the Army in November 1942, and served in the Pacific as a medic until his discharge in 1945.
In 1948, he moved to Arch, where he made his home the rest of his life.
For several years, he ran a garage and welding shop. In about 1964, he established the Arnold Seed Store.
Since 1971 he farmed and ranched, and looked after his cattle as long as his health would permit, family members said.
He was a member of the Third and Kilgore Church of Christ.
Family members said he enjoyed fishing, hunting and restoring vehicles.
He was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers, Glen and Warren Arnold, and by his mother and father-in-law, Ima and Scott Riley.
He is survived by his wife; three brothers, Robert Jerome Arnold Jr. of Las Vegas, Nev., George Arnold of Hayfork, Calif., and Walter Arnold of California; a sister, Betty Hickel of Albuquerque, and a host of nieces and nephews.
Peter Dahlstrom will officiate services.
Burial will be at Portales Cemetery.
Jim Wilhoit, Mark Gormley and Doug Crozier and Cliff, Billy Jr. and Matt Neece will serve as pallbearers.
Jerry and Bob Stokes, Paul Berry, Billy Neece Sr., E.B. and Berry Wilhoit, Buck Partin, James Riley, Wayne Williams, David Belle and Scott Riley will serve as honorary pallbearers.

Karen Hoffmann

Karen Marlene (Olson) Hoffmann, 59, of Ruidoso died Thursday, March 2, after a brief illness.
She was born April 8, 1946, in Palm Beach, Fla., to Richard and Dorothy Olson.
After graduating from high school in Minneapolis, she attended Stevens College for a year before marrying Henry V. Smith II, father of her two children.
In 1978, she married Karl Henry Hoffmann in Clovis.
She graduated from West Texas State University in 1992 with a bachelor of science in nursing.
She was director of student health at Eastern New Mexico University in Portales from 1993 to 1997.
She and her late husband owned Hoffmann Aviation and Clovis Flight School.
She moved to Ruidoso in 2001 and served as director of nursing for PMS Home Health and Hospice.
She also held other nursing jobs.
Family members said she will be remembered for her courageous fight against brain cancer.
She was preceded in death by her husband; her father, Richard Olson; and her son, David Matthew Smith.
She is survived by her mother of Rochester, Minn.; a daughter, Rachel Smith, and a grandson, Tyler Ramage, of Ruidoso; a sister, Mari Anne Guhl (and husband, Rick) of Rochester, Minn.; two nephews, Josh and Brad of Rochester; and several cousins.
Chaplain Darrell Winter and Assistant Chaplain Jim Lindenberger will officiate the Ruidoso services. Dinner will follow.
Burial will take place at 2 p.m. April 15 at Lawn Haven Cemetery in Clovis.
The family has suggested memorial donations to Mission Arch Care Center of Roswell or the Racetrack Chapel of Ruidoso Downs.

Gloria “Sug” Knox

Gloria “Sug” Knox, 76, of Portales died Monday, March 6, 2006, at Heartland Continuing Care Center.
She was born April 4, 1929, in Floydada, Texas, to Valley and Bonnie Shultz.
She graduated from Floydada High School. She was married Jack Knox on April 4, 1946, in Floydada.
She worked for several years as a pharmacy technician beginning at CJ’s Pillbox and later at Roden Smith Pharmacy before retiring at the age of 65.
Family members said she enjoyed reading, embroidery, staying in touch with friends, and being involved in the lives of her grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents; a son, Danny Knox, who died in 1969; and by her husband, who died in 1980.
She is survived by two sons, Dwight Knox of Portales and David Knox of Troy, Mo.; a daughter, Debbie Takeuchi of Redondo Beach, Calif; two grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; her brother, Charles Shultz of Portales; and her sister, Sammy Rink of Stewart, Fla.
Kenneth Broad will officiate services.

Lillie Holland, 96, of Lubbuck, formerly of Roosevelt County, died Monday, March 6, 2006.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Lloyd and a daughter, Jean Demastus.
She is survived by a son, Jim Holland (and wife, Linda) of Lubbock; a brother, Dan Brown; a sister, Robbie Gregory; four grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.

Wanda Riley

Wanda Riley, 77, of Taiban, died Sunday, March 5, 2006, at Roosevelt General Hospital following an illness.
She was born Dec. 20, 1928, in Clovis to Albert and Lilly Moss. She was raised in Clovis where she attended school. She attended a beauty school in Clovis.
She married F.C. Riley on Sept. 10, 1949, in Clovis.
They made their home at the Riley Ranch south of Taiban in 1949.
She worked as a waitress, baby-sitter, and in the laundry department of a nursing home for several years.
Family said she loved living on the ranch and caring for her pet animals.
She was preceded in death by her parents; three brothers Albert, Johnny and Freddy; and three sisters, Permalia, Doris and Albertina.
She is survived by her husband; three daughters, Becky Melton of Fort Sumner; Katherine Dewbre (and husband, Bill) of Rio Rancho and Margaret York (Stanley) of Amarillo; a sister, Mary Haws (Alfred) of Amarillo; two grandchildren, Ray Melton (Karen) and Stanley York (Grace); two great-grandsons, Frederice Clarence York and Reese Melton.
Anna Teeter will officiate services.
Burial will follow at Blanco Cemetery south of Taiban.
