Gary Don Burns

Gary Don Burns, 46, of Clovis, and formerly of Roswell, died Wednesday, June 7, 2006, in Clovis.

He was born Feb. 23, 1960, to Robert (Bob) and Dorotha Burns in Roswell. He graduated from Roswell High School in 1978 and worked at Xcel Energy for 22 years.

He was preceded in death by his father and grandparents, John and Rutonse Burns, all of Roswell; and Bill and Estelline Glasscock of Wesley, Okla.

Survivors include his wife, Maureen Daly Burns of Clovis; daughters, Heather Hobson (and husband, Clinton) of Roswell, and Sydney Lane Burns, of Gering, Neb.; son, Quinten Zane Burns, of Gering; mother, Dorotha V. Burns of Roswell; four brothers; Dwaine Burns (Jan) of Anson, Texas, Dwight Burns (Ann) of Roswell, Dale Burns (Robbie) of Alpine, Texas, and Drew Burns (Anna) of Corsicana, Texas; sister, Debbie Cheatem (Kai) of Chandler, Ariz.; mother-in-law, Florence Daly of Clovis; four brothers-in-law, Brian Daly (Stephanie), Jim Daly of Clovis, John Daly (Chris) of Utah and Tom Daly (Georgeann) of Albuquerque; sister-in-law, Stephanie Darmstedter (Rick) of Colorado; and many aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and cousins.

A closed-casket visitation will be held from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday.

Pastor Paul Chinikidiadi of Clovis will officiate services.
Burial will be at South Park Cemetery in Roswell.

Pallbearers will be Steve Meyers, Carlton Smith, Jimmy Randle, Kenny Hawes, Wade Whitehead and Rick Weitner.
Honorary pallbearers will be Doug Hughes, Tommy Sanchez, Jim Force, Jet Pilley, Jerry Garcia, Lynn Davenport, McMahon, David Wilson and Xcel Energy’s Clovis office co-workers.

Arrangements are by Ballard Funeral Home of Roswell.

Services: 10 a.m. (CDT) Monday at the First Baptist Church in Clarendon, Texas.

Charles Leon (Chuck) Stout, 61, of Clarendon, Texas, died Thursday, June 8, 2006, in Clarendon.

He was born March 18, 1945, in Goodnight, Texas. He was a resident of DeSoto, Texas, before moving to Clarendon seven years ago. He was a coach and teacher for much of his life in Clovis and Muleshoe, DeSoto, Corsicana and Weimar, Texas, and Clarendon College. He was a member of Clarendon Rotary Club and the First Baptist Church.

He was preceded in death by his father, the Rev. John Henry Stout; and his mother, Jonnie Dillehay Stout.

Survivors include two sisters, Linda Babcock (and husband, Kenneth) of Groom, Texas, and Nell Jones of Clovis; and two brothers, Dave Stout (Linda) of Clarendon and James E. Stout (Betty) of San Antonio, Texas.

The Revs. Dave Stout, Scott Jones and Mark Metzger will officiate.

Burial will take place in Citizens Cemetery in Clarendon.

Memorials may be made to the Susan Babcock Harp Memorial Scholarship, c/o West Texas A&M University Alumni Association, West Texas A&M University Box 60753, Canyon, TX 79016, or the Clarendon College Library.

Arrangements are by Robertson Funeral Directors of Clarendon.

Britten Ray Webb

Services: 2 p.m. Saturday at the Kingdom Hall of Jehovah’s Witnesses in Emmett, Idaho.

Britten Ray Webb, 77, of Emmett, Idaho, and formerly of Portales, died Wednesday, May 31, 2006, at SunBridge Care and Rehabilitation Center in Emmett, Idaho.

He was born Dec. 10, 1928, in Portales, where he lived until joining the Air Force in 1949. He married Joan Woods on July 2, 1950, in Kansas City, Mo.

Family members said he loved his family, hunting, fishing and the outdoors.

He was preceded in death by his mother, Essie Swopes; stepfather, Walter Swopes; father, Thomas Webb; brothers, Roy Webb and Dan Swopes; son, Michael Webb, and grandson, Todd Webb.

Survivors include his wife of Emmett; two sons, Rocky Webb of Boise, Idaho, and Bryant Webb of Emmett; and two daughters, Karon Webb of Boise and Brandy Hagler of Emmett; eight grandsons, Brandon Webb of Nampa, Idaho, Nathaniel Linville of Federal Way, Wash., and Terris Webb, Bryce Crosby, Logan Webb, and Jakob, Joshua and Jayven Armijo-Hagler, all of Emmett; and five granddaughters, Alaina Whitman of San Jose, Calif., Terah Kofahl of Madras, Ore., Gwen Daniels of Nampa, Meranda Webb of Cortez, Colo., and Piper Webb of Emmett; a sister, Lavon Elrod of Portales; two brothers, Wayman Swopes of Midland, Texas, and Truitt Swopes of Austin, Texas; six great-grandsons, William Webb of Nampa, and Sevryn and Therion Webb, Brinkley Crosby, Britten DeWayne and Carter Webb, all of Emmett; and three great-granddaughters, Jordan Matheson of Madras, Kayla Webb-Daniels of Nampa and Taylor Crosby of Emmett.

Arrangements are by the Cremation Society of Idaho.

Lula (Dendy) Slavey

Services: 2 p.m. Saturday at Portales Cemetery.

Lula (Dendy) Slavey, 72, of Arizona, and formerly of Portales, died Tuesday, March 28, 2006, in Arizona.

She was born Jan. 9, 1934, in Portales to Bessie and Carl Dendy.

She was active in Rainbow for Girls while she was in school. She graduated from Portales High School in 1952. Her home had been in Arizona since 1971, where she was employed by the police department as secretary to the SWAT Team for 23 years. She retired in 1998 after suffering a stroke.

She never missed watching the Arizona Diamondbacks Baseball games on television, according to family members. She was also a Phoenix Suns basketball fan, family members said.

She was preceded in death by her parents; and two brothers, Claude and Ed Dendy.

Survivors include two sons, Kenny Dean and Kevan Dane Fishback; daughter, Trina Dawn Fishback; four grandchildren; two brothers, Kenneth Dendy of Lubbock and Jack Dendy of Portales; and sisters, Marie Isabel of Hobbs and Imogene Monroe-Johnston of Alamogordo.

Scott P. Reeves will officiate services.
Arrangements are by Wheeler Mortuary of Portales.

J.W. (Jimmie) Looney
Services: 10 a.m. Saturday at Trinity Family Center in Portales.
J.W. (Jimmie) Looney, 72, of Portales died Wednesday, June 7, 2006, at Heartland Continuing Care Center in Portales.
He was born Sept. 15, 1933, in Mobeetie, Texas, to Ira Lee and C. E. Looney.
He worked on ranches and competed as a bronc rider in rodeos before coming to Portales about 1950. At 17, he began his truck-driving career with Kenneth Herbert Lumber. He married Cleta Jo Nixon on March 8, 1965. From 1966 until 1979, he drove for Welch Trucking. In the mid-1970s and again in the early 1980s, he and his wife also ran a service station. In 1982 he began driving for Southwest Canners, but retired in 1989 when he became disabled as a result of a fall at work.
Family members said he enjoyed traveling in his RV and fishing, as well as riding motorcycles. He played the guitar and played in numerous bluegrass festivals, they said. He was a member of the Trinity Family Center in Portales.
He was preceded in death by his parents and two grandsons, Robert and Jeff Hancock.
Survivors include his wife of Portales; sons, Jimmy Looney (and wife, Brenda) and “Dink” Looney (Susan), all of Portales; two stepsons, James Nixon (Lydia) of Bertram, Texas, and Joe Nixon of Portales; daughter, Twana Hancock (Floyd) of Portales; two stepdaughters, Kaila Nixon and Denise Nixon (and fiance, Don Wiley), all of Portales; 24 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; and a brother, Sherman Looney of Lovington.
The Revs. Kelly Fulfer and Don Hay will officiate.
Burial will be in Portales Cemetery.
Pallbearers are Josh Short, Nick Nixon, Micah Short, Floyd Hancock, Dearil Looney Jr. and Jimmie Looney Jr.
All of his other grandchildren and great-grandchildren will be honorary pallbearers.
Arrangements are by Wheeler Mortuary of Portales.

Gracy G. Capps

Services: 10 a.m. Friday at Steed-Todd Chapel, Clovis.

Gracy G. Capps, 85, of Pocahontas, Iowa, died Saturday, June 3, 2006, at Pocahontas Community Hospital in Pocahontas.

He was born May 22, 1920, in Cuervo to Lloyd and Sarah Williams Capps. He was raised in House. He served in the 6th Armored Division in World War II and was a prisoner of war in Germany. He attended the University of New Mexico where he played football and basketball, and later completed his education at Eastern New Mexico University. He was a longtime coach and teacher at Clovis High School, Goddard High School in Roswell and the Hondo schools. He coached all sports, but had a special love of golf, which he coached until his retirement, family members said.

He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Katherine Capps; and sister, Irene Cole.

Survivors include his second wife, Marless Capps of Pocahontas; a son, Neil E. Capps of Roswell; two sisters, Earline Cummerford of Springer and Fannie Dansby of Roswell; and a brother, Robert Capps of Roswell.
Frank Sherman will officiate.

Burial will be at Lawn Haven Memorial Gardens.
Arrangements are by Steed-Todd Funeral Home.

Estherline Dutton Adams

Services: 10:30 a.m. Friday at Wheeler Mortuary Chapel in Portales.

Estherline Dutton Adams, 90, of Portales died Monday, June 5, 2006, at her home.

She was born July 11, 1915, to Dena and P.E. Dutton in Burkburnett, Texas. Shortly after graduating from Burkburnett High School, she moved to Portales. She attended Eastern New Mexico University, West Texas Teacher’s College in Canyon, Texas, Texas Tech University in Lubbock and Highlands University in Las Vegas, N.M. During summers, she attended classes at the University of Arkansas. She earned her undergraduate and graduate degrees from ENMU. On Dec. 21, 1940, she married John E. Adams in Floyd, where they made their home until 1945. She began her 33-year teaching career in Floyd. They moved to Prairie Grove, Ark., where she continued to teach for several more years. In 1956, they returned to Portales, where she taught until she retired in 1979.

She was a member of the Floyd Methodist Church and Bethel Homemakers Club.

She enjoyed genealogy and crafts, and had a bell collection, her family said.

She was preceded in death by her parents; four brothers, Orin, Olan, Derald and Gerald Dutton; a sister, Ola Watson; and her husband on May 20, 1995.

She is survived by a son, Jimmy Ed Adams of Portales; a daughter, Carolyn Sue Tederick (and husband, Edward) of Roswell; a granddaughter, Brenda Sue Searcy (Troy) of Roswell; and three great-grandchildren, Candace, Cody and Joshua Searcy of Roswell; two sisters, Gene Dutton of Fullerton, Calif., and Betty Dutton of Conroe, Texas; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Scott P. Reeves will officiate services.
Burial will be at Portales Cemetery.

Pallbearers will be Dale Miller, Robert Miller, Kyle Dutton, Johnny Firestone, H.R. Terry and Sid Strebeck.

Arrangements are by Wheeler Mortuary of Portales.

Boley Sullivan

Services: 2:30 p.m. today at Portales Cemetery.

Boley Sullivan, 81, died Monday, June 5, 2006, at Southwest Regional Hospital in Lubbock.

He was born Sept. 27, 1924, to Allie and Albert J. Sullivan in Post, Texas. When he was 8, the family moved to Portales. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II and hit the beaches of Omaha on the second day of the D-Day invasion. After returning from the Army, he began his truck-driving career. In 1959, he moved to Alaska where he lived until 1961. He returned to Portales, and on Nov. 30, 1961, married Christine Meacham in Fort Sumner. They moved to Denver where they started Sullivan Trucking. In 1991, he retired, sold the business and returned to Portales.

For many years, he and his wife traveled in their motor home, mostly in the western and northwestern United States, usually spending winters in Arizona, according to family members.

They had to stop traveling about three years ago because of his health, his family said.

He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Jim and A.J., and a sister, Mary.

He is survived by his wife of Portales; a son, Jimmy Don Frye of Dumas, Texas; a daughter, Brenda Simon (and husband, Tim) of Brighton, Colo.; three grandchildren, Charlie and Tiffany Aragon, and Carie Frye; and a great-grandchild, Jaydyn Alexa Aragon.

Scott P. Reeves will officiate services.

Arrangements are by Wheeler Mortuary of Portales.

Carolyn Pruit

Services: 9:30 a.m. Thursday at Wheeler Mortuary Chapel in Portales.

Carolyn Pruit, 60, of Portales, died Sunday, June 4, 2006, at Plains Regional Medical Center.

Born Nov. 16, 1945, in Portales to Mattie and Carroll Boland, she grew up in Lovington where she attended school.

She attended Clovis Community College and Eastern New Mexico University in Portales.

She had worked for Levi Strauss and also was assistant manager for Town & Country Food Stores.

Family members said she enjoyed playing bingo and was a competitive dancer, having won several trophies over the years.

She was a devoted mother and grandmother who enjoyed being involved in the lives of her family members, they said.

She was preceded in death by her parents and a sister, Gayle Jones, who died in 2003.

Survivors include three sons, Billy Guthrie (and wife, Tina) of New Braunfels, Texas, and Ronnie Guthrie (Renee) and Jeff Guthrie (Vickie), all of Clovis; two daughters, Leslie Roberts (Terry) of Portales and Donna Webb of Mount Pleasant, Texas; 11 grandchildren, Tye Griffin, Cody and Alexis Ryan, and Ashley, Tamara, Ronnie Lee, Deanne, Rhett, Johnny Lee, Kelsey and Kelly Guthrie; a great-grandson, Jaden Griffin; her stepmother, Edna Boland of Union Grove, Texas; two brothers, Harold Boland (Josie) of Longview, Texas, and Carroll Boland (Pam) of East Mountain, Texas; a sister, Brenda Selman of Union Grove, Texas; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Pat Mathis will officiate services.

Burial will be at 3 p.m. (CDT) Thursday at Red Mudd Cemetery in Spur, Texas.

Pallbearers will be Billy, Ronnie and Jeff Guthrie, Robby Jones, Tye Griffin and Ronnie Lee Guthrie.

Honorary pallbearers will be all family members and friends.

Arrangements are by Wheeler Mortuary of Portales.

Vera Johnson

Services: 10 a.m. Wednesday at Wheeler Mortuary Chapel, Portales.

Vera Alice Johnson, 85, of Clovis died Saturday, June 3, 2006, at Retirement Ranch in Clovis.

Born Oct. 25, 1920, in Bokchito, Okla., to Zephery and Samuel North, she grew up in Ogden, Okla.

She was active in the school choir that performed at the Cotton Bowl and the Texas 100-Year Celebration.

She married Virgil Woodrow Johnson on July 2, 1938, in Mangum, Okla.

They lived for a time in Artesia, Mountainair and Portales before moving to Elida in 1951.

She was a member of the Elida Baptist Church, Women’s Missionary Union and the Elida Homemaker’s Club.

She later became a member of University Baptist Church in Portales.

Family members said she enjoyed arts and crafts and had crocheted an afghan for each grandchild graduating from high school.

She volunteered as a caregiver for the local elderly.

She was preceded in death by her parents; five brothers, Herbert, J.B., Eugene, Everett and Clifton North; three sisters, Ola Birdsong, Verna McDonald and Leta Finch; daughter, Patsy Gail Johnson, who died as an infant; and husband, Virgil W. Johnson, who died in 1980.

Survivors include two sons, Jerry Johnson (and wife, Iris) of Portales and Woody Johnson (Linda) of Derby, Kan.; one daughter, Ann Britton Johnson of Garden City, Kan.; eight grandchildren, Tawnia Gaylor, Shawnia Gruen, Leonard Johnson, Tammy Johnson, Kimberly Nusser, Dr. Brian Johnson, Corey Britton and Kristy Britton; seven great-grandchildren, Erika Waters, Dalton and Cassidy Gruen, Dakota and Conagher Britton, Emilia Robinson and Issiah Nusser; and numerous nieces and nephews.

The Rev. Steve Smith will officiate services.

Burial will take place in Portales Cemetery.

Memorials may be made to the American Heart Association.

Arrangements are by Wheeler Mortuary of Portales.
