WILLIAM M. TURNER, 74, of Santa Fe died Sunday.
He was born in Phoenix, N.Y.. He was a veteran of the U.S. Navy and served during the Korean War. He had been a 55-year resident of Los Alamos, working for the Zia Co., Santa Fe Industries, Pan Am and Johnson Control as the work order control supervisor from 1949 until retiring in 1994. He was an avid model railroader, an accomplished wood worker, co-founder of the original Lassie League of Los Alamos, a member of the American Legion and the Los Alamos Sportsman Club, and belonged to the United Church of Los Alamos. He is survived by his wife, Virginia; daughters, Susan Agins of Colorado Springs, Colo., Mary Martinez of Santa Fe, Jo Rossi of Los Alamos and Linda Horpedahl of El Rancho; brother, Stuart Turner of Phoenix, N.Y.; sisters, Jane Terpening of Westport, Conn. and Winnie Bunyea of Westminster, Md.; son, Christopher Bell of Los Alamos; five grandchildren and many other relatives. A visitation will be held at 1 p.m. Friday followed by services at 2 p.m. at the United Church of Los Alamos with burial to follow at Guaje Pines Cemetery. WILLIAM ROBERT WITHERS, 67, of Abiquiu died Jan. 19, 2004. He was born in Wichita, Kans. He lived in the Chama River Valley for many years. He had a lifelong interest in design and construction. As a young man he learned carpentry and wove that knowledge, plus a heightened sense of design, into his career in architectural design. Many in the Santa Fe area benefited from his keen eye for detail and his tireless research on every aspect of each project he undertook. He studied English and American Literature, architecture and Spanish, becoming fluent through his travels in Mexico and living and working with the people of New Mexico, which he loved. He was a writer and composed prose and poetry. He was preceded in death by his father, Robert R. Withers. He is survived by his mother, Mary S. Withers; and sister, Barbara Withers. Arrangements were under the direction of Berardinelli Family Funeral Service, 984-8600.

BILLY JOE RODARTE, 26, of Llano Largo died unexpectedly Saturday. He was preceded in death by his mother, Peggy E. Rodarte. He is survived by his son, Billy Joe Rodarte Jr.; the mother of his son, Valerie Rodriguez, of Rio Lucio; father, Joe M. Rodarte of Llano Largo, and friend Marcella Hernandez; sister, Geraldine Rodarte; brother, Joe Mike Rodarte Jr. and wife Heather; and many other relatives and friends. WILLIE ROMERO, 69, of Española died Tuesday. He was a wood carver and liked to fish, solve crossword puzzles and play Scrabble. He was a metal worker, quite artistic, and enjoyed making wood and metal miniature furniture. He was preceded in death by his parents; sister, Mela Gorman; and son, Johnny Romero. He is survived by his children, Andrew Romero and wife Denise of Alamagordo, Virginia Ulibarri and husband Dan of Santa Fe, Yolanda Romero of Denver, Richard Romero of Nevada, Charles Ortiz of Pojoaque, Josephine Romero and Guadalupita Romero, both of Denver, and Anthony Garcia of San Juan; siblings, Eufemio Romero and Helen, Gustavo Romero and wife Bertha, both of Española, Julian Romero and wife Frances of Cuyamungue, Virginia Montoya of Nambé, Martha Maestas and husband Joe of La Puebla, Angie Ortiz and husband Leroy of Albuquerque and Pita Nabholz and husband Richard of Mesa, Ariz.; 20 grandchildren; and many other relatives and friends. Cremation has taken place. A rosary will be recited at 7 p.m. today at Holy Cross Church. Mass will be celebrated at noon Saturday at Holy Cross Church with burial to follow at the Holy Cross Cemetery.

EARL STEWART SASSER, 88, of Los Alamos died Wednesday at the Sombrillo Nursing Center. He was born in the Indian Springs Township of North Carolina. After completing his education, Earl joined the U.S. Army Air Corps. After training as a radioman, he was stationed in the South Pacific at Pearl Harbor, Hawaii, where he survived the Japanese attack. He flew 30 missions throughout the South Pacific, primarily around New Guinea and New Zealand. His crew received the Flying Cross medal for valor in that campaign, along with other commendations for his service. He flew another 25 missions in Europe when World War II came to a halt. In the States, he was stationed at Kirtland Air Force Base, where he supported the nuclear weapons test program at the Nevada Test Site. He retired from the Air Force in 1960 and went on to live in Albuquerque, Taos and Questa prior to moving to Everett, Wash., in the mid-1960s. After a brief career with the Boeing Corporation, he took a position with the U.S. Postal Service as postmaster in Mukilteo, Wash., until his retirement. He was active in veterans affairs, serving in the VFW in many positions, and as a member of the Kit Carson chapter of the Masonic Lodge in Taos. He moved to Los Alamos in 1998 to be near his nephew and family. He was preceded in death by his parents, Thaddeus L. and Elizabeth H. Sasser; and siblings, Thad, Sally, Frances, Dorothy, Raymond, Rachel and Wayne. He is survived by his nephew, Kent Sasser of Los Alamos; and many other relatives and friends. GILBERT ARELLANO, 80, of Costilla died Monday.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Angie Arellano, and son, Jake Arellano. He is survived by his children, Andrew Arellano and wife Kathy and Seya Bailon and husband Donald, all of Costilla, Arnold Arellano and wife Norma of Questa, Eddie Arellano and wife DeAnn of Garcia, Colo., and Rosanita Milawski and husband Stephen of Prescott, Ariz.; 22 grandchildren; and many other relatives. CHARLOTTE M. BADERTSCHER, 93, of Taos died Tuesday. She attended the Ancianos Senior Citizen Center and Grace Brethren Church. GREG LOPEZ III, 27, of Chamita died Tuesday in an automobile accident. He was preceded in death by his brother, Moritz Lopez. He liked to joke, and he liked to hunt. He is survived by his parents, Jose G. and Catherine Lopez; companion, Tomasita Martinez; children, Samantha and Moritz Lopez; brother, Joseph Lopez, all of Chamita; sister, Cindy Martinez and husband Eugene of Alcalde; and many other relatives and friends. ARTHUR B. MIRANDA, 80, of Pecos died Tuesday. He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II. He was later employed as a bus driver for the city of Montebello, Calif., until he retired in 1986. He was preceded in death by his brother, John Chavira; sister, Ophelia and Julia Miranda, son, Ronnie Miranda; and parents, Arthur and Dalia Miranda. He is survived by his wife, Lucy; daughters, Annette Mandle and husband Manuel, Lisa Chavez and fiancé Orlando Lopez; eight grandchildren; brother, Horace Miranda, and wife Ruth; sisters, Celia Barreras, Vera Aguirra and Ortie De La Rosa; and many other relatives and friends.
