Bruce Gordon Campbell, 54, artist, musician, anthropologist, and archaeologist, died Sept. 5th, 2002, in Santa Fe after battling cancer. He was the deeply beloved father of Alea Josephine Matlock Campbell.
Bruce had enormous creativity, deep sensitivity, a wild sense of humor, and unique imagination. He deeply touched a wide and diverse circle of friends from coast to coast.
Born on May 4, 1948 in Montrey, Bruce was the son of Dr. Douglas Gordon Campbell, a noted San Francisco psychiatrist, and his wife Marian Van Tuyl, founder of the Mills School of Dance at Mills College in Oakland, CA. Bruce's childhood was spent in the company of San Francisco's intelligentsia, where he developed an abiding interest in dance, music, and literature Remarkably creative from an early age, Bruce's childhood drawings were featured in Rhoda Kellogg's ground breaking book on childrens' art. As a youth, he studied with Florence Hawley Ellis, the famed Southwest ethnographer and archaeologist.
He studied extensively the history and culture of Native Americans and ancient Europeans. His knowledge and insights into the connections between ancient cultures was profound.
Bruce spent many years living and working at Sacred Mountain trading post north of Flagstaff, Arizona. He became an adept stonemason and expert dry-land gardener. He also developed a unique style of mosaic stone inlay jewelry that was based on patterns found in Aztec and Mayan architecture and Navajo weavings. Bruce called it stone weaving. Collectors across the U.S. valued his jewelry.
Bruce was an accomplished musician. He played the banjo/ piano, harp, guitar, water drum and instruments of his own creation. He was particularly drawn to the simple purity of old timely American songs and Yaqui music.
Bruce made frequent trips across Nevada's Great Basin. He loved the open sky and solitude. He was fascinated by the myriad of microcosms at natural hot and cold springs. These fresh-water springs were the subject of his watercolors, exhibited at various galleries in Taos and Santa Fe. He advocated for the protection of Mono Lake, Pyramid Lake and the Black Rock Desert; he considered the annual Burning Man festival a detrimental travesty to the BRD. He made his home in Talpa, near Taos, where he relished irrigating his alfalfa field and gardens with his daughter toddling beside him.
Of all his diverse and passionate interests, nothing approached his devotion to his daughter, Alea. From him, she has inherited a love of history, storytelling, gardening, music and art.
Bruce was generous, loyal, eccentric and nonconformist. He will be greatly missed by beloved
daughter, Alea, her mother, Staci Matlock, his brother, Bob Campbell, and sister, Gail Campbell; and a large, devoted circle of friends.
At his request, Bruce's ashes will be left at places he loved across the West and at the Pacific Ocean.
A musical memorial is planned at his home in Talpa on Nov. 1. Donations in his memory can be made to the non-profit Mono Lake Preservation Committee, P.O. Box 29, Lee Vining, CA, 93541, www.monolake.org or High Country News Research Fund, P.O. Box 1090, Paonia, CO 81428. www.hcn.org
