ROBERT CHARLES TAYLOR, 85, of Santa Fe died Sunday in Homer, Alaska, after a long illness.
He was born in Portland, Ore., and worked at several jobs until World War II, when he entered the U.S. Army. He served in the South Pacific from July 1944 to June 1946, when he was honorably discharged. He started out in the infantry and went on to being a mess sergeant of a company mess hall, feeding 180 men. He enjoyed cooking throughout his life. After his discharge, he used the GI bill to learn the stone mason trade. He married, moved to El Paso and then to Santa Fe. He worked in construction at Los Alamos. It was still closed to the public then, but when the government opened it up for civilians to buy property and build homes, he bought one of the first lots. He started to build their home out of flagstone and so many people asked him how and where to buy the stone that he decided to start his own stone business, Cuyamungue Stone Company. He was the first one in that area to bring in flagstones from Arizona and Colorado. This started a lifelong love of rocks. The business then expanded into landscape materials and rock and mineral specimens from all over the world. He was well known for the beautiful fireplaces he built. He was in this business until he was forced, by ill health, to retire in 2000. In 2003, he moved to Homer to live with his sister-in-law's family. He did make several fishing trips on Kachemak Bay last summer and really enjoyed that.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Charles and Dora Taylor.
He is survived by his wife, Myra Taylor of Homer; and many other relatives.
Graveside services were held Wednesday at Hickerson Memorial Cemetery in Homer. Condolences may be sent to Myra Taylor, 385 Lee Dr., Homer, Alaska, 99603.
Homer Funeral Home, (907) 283-3333.
