PAUL OLMSTEAD, 89, of Santa Fe died Sunday.
He grew up in Pennsylvania, Colorado and New Jersey. During his training in community planning at the New College of Teachers College of Columbia University, he visited international communities in Europe. He then worked in a cooperative community in Macedonia, Georgia. During World War II he was a pacifist. His assignment to work as a conscientious objector involved firefighting in western forests, service in a mental hospital, and the mass production of sanitary pit privies in Florida. He and his wife lived in Alpine, Tenn., in a Presbyterian Mission Station. While in Alpine, the couple adopted a 10-month-old baby boy. He taught the mountain men to make furniture, boats and salad bowls from the native first growth walnut, cherry and oak lumber. After establishing Alpine Industries, they moved back to New York. He taught woodworking at The George Junior Republic School in Freeville, N.Y., When his son was 5 they moved to a Presbyterian Mission School in a small town in Utah. He taught woodworking at Wasatch Academy and led prayer groups and skiing expeditions, as well as advising the students council and acting as recreation director. After 28 years, he retired to Plaza del Monte in Santa Fe. He was a member of the Canyon Road Meeting of the Religious Society of Friends. He was the senior olympic ping pong champion of New Mexico and skied for years, sometimes with his grandchildren. His artistic bent was displayed in his garden, his sculptures in wood and alabaster, and his oil paintings of the mountains.
He believed that his spirit would be with his loved ones even after his physical body was no longer with them.

FRANK F. CARRASCO, 55, of Santa Fe died Sunday.
He was born in Carlsbad to Sofia and Augustine Carrasco. He earned his bachelor's degree from Stanford University in 1970, his master's degree from Antioch University in 1972 and his doctorate from the University of Colorado in 1983. He was the executive director of the Northern Area Local Workforce Development Board and the owner of Carrasco Consulting. He had previously been the dean of admissions for the Santa Fe Community College; the dean of planning and admissions, and later vice president for the Northern New Mexico Community College; the director of research for the Commission on Higher Education; director of research for Interstate Research Associates; and the director of research for the Migrant Clearinghouse. He was the board chairman for St. Francis Cathedral School and served on the Santa Maria de La Paz finance committee. He served on the city of Santa Fe Planning Commission, the city of Santa Fe Metropolitan Water Board, the Non-Public Schools Commission, the National Association of Colleges and Universities, the Society for University Planning, the National Post Secondary Education Cooperative, the Governor's Advisory Committee on Telecommunications, the Santa Fe High School Curriculum Task Force and the Forum for U.S./Soviet Dialog. He was committed to improving the lives of New Mexicans through education and job training and assisting young Hispanics to pursue and finish their education. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Frank Carrasco Hispanic Educational Scholarship Fund, P.O. Box 6493, Santa Fe, N.M., 87502. He is survived by his wife, Maria Lucia Trujillo; children, Sonya, Anika and Matthew Carrasco-Trujillo; siblings, Sally Hemminger, Gloria Campbell, Brenda Carrasco, Olga Galvan, Rosie Vasquez, Sandra Carrasco, Joe Carrasco, Jimmy Carrasco, Elsie Williams, Margaret Olvera, Catherine Salazar, Senovia Lopez, Pat Abeyta, Susanna Trujillo and Felix Trujillo. ELOYDA R. MOYA, 84, of Santa Fe died Monday. She was born in Santa Fe to Jose E. and Eliza Roybal. She was preceded in death by her husband, John B. Moya Jr.; sisters, Agueda Martinez, Frances Martinez and Ruby Romero; and brothers, Elias, Benny and Paul Roybal. She is survived by her great-niece, whom she raised as her daughter, Regina C. Quintana; and many other relatives. A rosary will be recited at 7 p.m. today at St. Anne's Catholic Church. SOHAN SINGH, 54, of Santa Fe died Sunday after suffering a heart attack. He was born in India to Ujahar Singh and Kartar Kaur Bhandal. He received a master's degree in Punjabi. He was the manager at a Shell gas station and the Sunrise Restaurant and the owner of Sohan's India Delights. He was a member of the Sikh Temple in Española. He is survived by his daughter, Parminder K. Bhandal; son, Gurminder S. Bhandal, both of Savannah, Ga.; sister, Gian Kaur; brother, Mahinder Singh Bhandal; former wife, Varinder K. Bhandal; wife, Surinder Kaur, all of India; and former wife, Sharon J. Montgomery of Mexico; and many other relatives. JOSEPH B. VALDEZ, 28, of Santa Fe died Monday. His true passion was being a semi-pro driver for United Rock Crawling and Off Road Challenge. He also enjoyed skiing and boating. He is survived by his mother, Lucille Valdez; father, Joseph Valdez; stepmother, Grace Valdez; sisters, Angelic Hatchel, Tracy Martinez and husband Eric Martinez, Carissa Valdez and fiancé Sammy Saavedra and Gabriela Chavez; and many other relatives and friends. A rosary will be recited at 7 p.m. Thursday at St. Anne's Catholic Church. Mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Friday at the same church followed by a reception at Eagles. ABEL DIAZ, 74, of La Villita died unexpectedly on Tuesday.
He loved to garden and plant chile. In his youth, he loved to fish and hunt. He was preceded in death by his wife, Cecilia Diaz; parents, Pedro and Melissa Diaz; sons, Michael Diaz and Ruben Vigil; brother, Pete Diaz; and sisters, Benita and Lugarda Martinez. He is survived by his son, Eddie Diaz and wife Frances of Chimayó; adopted grandson, Michael A. Diaz Jr. of La Villita; son, Johnny Vigil of Alcalde; daughters, Christina Montoya and husband Victor of Santa Fe and Lorraine Patterson and husband Charles of Albuquerque; sister, Delia Valdez of La Villita; 14 grandchildren; and many other relatives and friends. A visitation will be held at 6 p.m. today with a rosary to be recited at 7 p.m. at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church in San Juan. WRAY B. GARN, 88, died Tuesday. He was born in Yakima, Wash. He was a former resident of Albuquerque, Los Alamos and White Rock. He graduated from the University of Pennsylvania and went to work there for Westinghouse Corporation as an electrical engineer. He then moved to Albuquerque, where he went to work for the University of New Mexico. He and his wife moved to Los Alamos, where he was employed as a scientist on the Manhattan Project, that later became Los Alamos National Laboratory. He worked there on numerous projects until his retirement. He and his wife were pioneers during the early days of the lab. They moved to White Rock, where they lived for more than 14 years and traveled all around the world. He loved to hike and to go jeeping around the countryside rockhounding with his wife and friends. He was an amateur photographer of nature. He was active in the Los Alamos Geological Society and the White Rock Senior Center. He was a lifetime and founding member of the BPOE Los Alamos Elks Lodge No. 283, an associate member of the Albuquerque Elks No. 461, a member of IEEE and numerous other technical societies and past director of the Los Alamos National Bank. In the last 18 months, he lived in Albuquerque to be close to his family. He was preceded in death by his parents, Florence Beardsley Garn and Edmond Garn and wife, Marjorie Lucile Antoine Garn. JOSE BENITO MADRID, 79, of Hernandez died Tuesday. He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Vicki; and daughter, Cleo Madrid. He is survived by his children, Alex Madrid and wife Ida, Alfred Madrid and wife Tina, Angie Herrera, Armando Madrid, Velma and husband Jose Luis Banda, Lawrence Madrid and wife Irene, Toby Madrid and wife Jane, and Harold Madrid and wife Edith; a granddaughter he raised, Jamie Madrid; sisters, Mary Montano of Hernandez and Mary Herrera of Albuquerque; 17 grandchildren; and many other relatives and friends. LUCIANO URIOSTE, 65, of Las Vegas, N.M., died Monday after a long illness at Vida Encantada Nursing Home.
He was born in Tecolotito. He originally resided in Las Vegas, Nev., moving back to Las Vegas, N.M., to be a ranch hand.
He served in the U.S. Navy for four years.
His favorite hobbies were photography, fishing, watching cowboy western movies and reading Louis Lamour novels.
He also enjoyed boxing and coaching boxing.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Augustine and Florianita Urioste; and brothers, Leo Urioste, Henry Urioste and Jose Urioste. He is survived by his son, Timothy Urioste of California; sisters, Aurora Padilla and Eloisa Pena and husband Vincent, all of Las Vegas, N.M., Laura Romero and husband Ralph of San Jose, N.M., Jenny Urioste of Grants, Dolores Prather and husband Ralph of Española; Rebecca Mumbert and husband Wayne of Maryland, and Celsa Gallegos of Nevada, brothers, David Urioste of Florida, Eric Urioste and wife Ginger, and Eduardo Urioste and wife Martha, all of Nevada; and many other relatives and friends.
A visitation will be held all day today at the Rogers Chapel with a rosary to be recited at 7 p.m. at the Immaculate Conception.
A funeral service will be held at 9 a.m. Friday at the same church with burial to follow at San Jose Cemetery.

DANIEL SCOTT WESTER, 12, of Santa Fe died suddenly Sunday. He is survived by his father and mother, Kevin S. Wester and Aida B.

ALBERT M. DIAZ, 65, of Los Angeles died March 18. He was born in Dixon.
He was a barber by trade and owned his own barber shop in Inglewood, Calif. He enjoyed most sports, including basketball, hunting and fishing. He was preceded in death by his father, Luis M. Diaz; father-in-law and mother-in-law, Emilio and Antonia Salazar.
He is survived by his wife, Mabel Diaz; son, Rowland Diaz; wife, Barbara; daughters, Debra Diaz, Linda Diaz and Rebecca Diaz; two grandchildren; mother, Rebecca M. Diaz; brothers, Bon Diaz, Franklin Diaz, Tommy Diaz and Archie Diaz; and sisters, Teresita Medina, Melva Lopez, Orlinda Romero, Dorothy Martinez, Helen Bustos, Estelle Diaz-Valdez and many other relatives and friends. A rosary will be recited at 7 p.m. Friday at St. Anne's Church in Los Pachecos.
