WILLIAM C. "BILL" FRANCIS, 84, of Los Alamos died Sunday after a short illness.
He was born in Cherryvale, Kan. He worked as a construction manager most of his adult life. After working in Missouri, Illinois, Ohio, Michigan and Kentucky, he and his first wife moved in 1947 to Los Alamos from California. They loved the mountains and the outdoors. He then worked for the Zia Co. for 36 years, rising to the position of deputy manager, and retired in 1983. He served on the Los Alamos Medical Center Advisory Board, was past president of the Los Alamos Sheriff's Posse and past president of Toastmasters International. In 1975 he was named Kiwanis "Man of the Year" for heading up the coordination of seven task forces for Los Alamos County. After his retirement he worked as a consultant for the Los Alamos National Lab until 2003. He was an avid fisherman and hunter and and often enjoyed fishing for trout at Abiquiu Lake.
He was preceded in death by his parents; first wife and mother of his three children, Shirley; and second wife, Kathrine.
He is survived by his son, Stephen and wife Dannette of Los Alamos; daughters, Kathryn Baker and husband Charles of Sierra Vista, Ariz. and Lynette and husband Bill of Albuquerque; eight grandchildren; and many other relatives and friends.
A public visitation will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday in the Sangre de Cristo Chapel of DeVargas Funeral Home followed by a funeral at 11:00 a.m. A graveside service will be held at 2:30 p.m. Wednesday at Sunset-Memorial Park in Albuquerque.

CARL J. GALLEGOS, 50, of Las Vegas, N.M., died Friday.
He was born in Las Vegas, N.M., to Jose Gallegos and Rafaela Lopez Gallegos.
He was a well-known meat cutter at the Guerin's and Tony's markets. He also enjoyed fishing. He attended the Immaculate Conception Church.
He was preceded in death by his father, Jose Gallegos.
He is survived by his son, Justin Gallegos; daughter, Annetra Herrera and husband Jude; mother, Rafaela Gallegos; brothers, Eddie Gallegos and Alejandro Gallegos, all of Las Vegas, N.M.; mother of his children, Mary Ann Martinez; and many other relatives and friends.
A public visitation will be held from 1 to 5:30 p.m. today at the Rogers Chapel followed by a rosary to be recited at 7 p.m. at the Immaculate Conception Church. A funeral will be held at 9 a.m. Wednesday at the same church with burial to follow at Watrous Cemetery.

PATRICIO "PAT" GALLEGOS, 57, of El Rito died Sunday.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Julian and Trinidad Gallegos; and brother, Medardo Gallegos.
He is survived by his wife, Virginia Gallegos; daughters, Deana Naranjo and husband Robert and Naomi Gallegos-Archuleta, all of El Rito, Renee Martinez and husband Daniel of Medanales, Yvette Gallegos and companion Geraldo Anaya of Española, and Cheryl Gallegos and companion Samuel Rascon of Taos; siblings, Tony Gallegos and wife Olivia of Rio Chama, Libby Trujillo and husband Silviano, Reyes Gallegos, and Nora Trujillo and husband Ernesto, all of Medanales, Julia Jaramillo of El Rito, Vicente Gallegos and wife Viola of La Jara, Colo., six grandchildren; and many other relatives and friends.
A rosary will be recited at 7 p.m. today at Block-Salazar Mortuary and Wednesday at San Juan de Nepumoceno. Mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Thursday at San Juan de Nepumoceno with burial to follow at El Rito Cemetery.

ERNEST E. KAVANAUGH, 74, of Las Vegas, N.M., died Friday at Northeastern Regional Hospital after a long illness.
He graduated from Las Vegas High School, now Robertson High School and received his bachelor of arts in sociology at New Mexico Highlands University; his bachelor of arts in canon law at St. Louis University; and his master's degree in theology at the University of Texas. He served 16 years in the U.S. Army having served in Germany and the Korean conflict. He was honorably discharged with the rank of sergeant first class. He was involved with the 726th AAA Gun Battalion for the U.S. Army National Guard. He retired from the Fourth Judicial District as the chief juvenile probation officer in the early 1980s and served as a councilman for the city of Las Vegas. He was also a San Miguel county deputy sheriff. He left Las Vegas, N.M., in 1983 for St. Louis where he joined the Order of the Holy Family and was a missionary for the next seven years. While a missionary in Mexico he sustained injuries in an accident which forced him to retire. He was a member of Post 12 of the American Legion, San Juan Argonne Post No. 1547 of the Veteran of Foreign Wars. He was active in the Cursillo Movement and was involved in the Las Vegas Leaders School. He was an animal lover, an avid gardener whose specialty was tropical plants. He loved fishing, reading, working crossword puzzles, and listening to music. He dedicated many years caring for his mother. He was influential in the lives of his nephews and nieces whom he considered his grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Nicolas and Henrietta Delgado Kavanaugh; brothers, Louie, Nick and Joe Kavanaugh; and sisters, Josie Garcia and Margie Sena.
He is survived by his brothers, Hector Kavanaugh of Las Vegas, N.M., and Henry Kavanaugh of Albuquerque; companion, "Pete" the dog; and many other relatives and friends.
Mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. today at Our Lady of Sorrows Church with burial to follow in the Kavanaugh family plot in the San Jose Cemetery.

THEODORA "DORA" ENCINIAS , 64, of Ribera died Sunday. She was born in Leyba. She was preceded in death by her father, Julian Chavez; mother, Concha Pino Chavez; and brother, Victor Chavez. She is survived by her husband, Alejandro Encinias of the family home; sons, Ralph Encinias of Leyba; Hermando Encinias and Betty Romero of Las Vegas, N.M., Martin Encinias and wife Joycelyn of Stanley, Horacio "Paco" Encinias and Pelagia Villanueva of Gonzales Ranch, grandson whom she helped raise, Casey Encinias of Las Vegas, N.M.; six grandchildren; sisters, Reynalda Tapia of Moriarty, Piedad "Mary" Martinez and husband Pat of Santa Fe, Corrine Rodriguez and husband Joe of Clovis, Mary Pino of Albuquerque, Diana Chavez of Grants; brothers, Ascencion "Johnny" Chavez and wife Tillie, and Dale Chavez and wife Eva, all of Albuquerque; and many other relatives and friends. A rosary will be recited at 7 p.m. today at Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church in Villanueva. AMELIA GALLEGOS, 82, of Hernandez died Monday after a long illness. She was a lifelong member of the Hernandez Community. She belonged to San Jose Catholic Church. She was a good cook and housekeeper. She was a loving mother and grandmother. She was preceded in death by her husband, Estevan Gallegos; parents, Jose Carmel and Josephina Trujillo; sister, Ramona Espinoza; and brother, Luis Trujillo. She is survived by her sons, Estevan A. Gallegos and wife Pauline and LeRoy Gallegos, all of Hernandez; and Ben Trujillo and wife Inez of Albuquerque; daughters, Lucy Martinez and husband Bert of Chimayó and Estella Gallegos of Hernandez; sisters, Inez Woodmen and Lena Dominguez; 10 grandchildren; and many other relatives. A visitation will be held at 6:30 p.m. with a devotional service to follow at 7 p.m. Thursday at Victory Faith. FRANCIS "PANCHO" R. LOPEZ, 75, of Santa Fe died Sunday after a sudden illness.
He was married in San Juan Pueblo in 1955.
He was a veteran of the Marine Corps. He was retired from the state Highway Department.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Fred and Trinidad Lopez; wife, Ruby Lopez; and sister Laura Lopez.
He is survived by his sons, Richard Lopez and partner Sally Garcia, and John Lopez and wife Pam; daughter, Jackie Gonzalez and husband Dean; two granddaughters; brother, Fred Lopez Jr. and wife Eva, and many other relatives. A visitation will be held at 3 p.m. followed by an evening prayer at 7 p.m. Thursday at Berardinelli Family Chapel.
Mass will be celebrated at 8:30 a.m. Friday at St. Francis Cathedral with burial to follow at Santa Fe National Cemetery.

MELA MAESTAS, 73, of Anton Chico died Tuesday at Northeastern Regional Hospital.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Ramon Jaramillo and Felicita Gonzales Jaramillo; and husband, Jesus Maestas.
She is survived by her son, Leroy Maestas of Anton Chico; two grandchildren; siblings, Monico Jaramillo of Anton Chico, Mary Ann Aguilar, Adelina Perea and Jerry Gonzales and wife Yolanda, all of Santa Rosa, Grabelita Lucero of Las Vegas, N.M., Terry Cordova and Toni Marquez, both of Clovis, and Margaret Cos and husband Angel of California; and many other relatives. A rosary will be recited at 7 p.m. today at San Jose Catholic Church in Anton Chico.
