Doranna Rizzi

Doranna Rizzi was born in Elko, Nev., on April 2, 1909, at the home of a family friend, Mrs. Leberski, who then lived on Commercial Street. Doranna's parents were Claude and Ellen Womack of Elko. She lived in Elko for the first year of her life and then moved to the ranching community of Mountain City, Nev.

Doranna attended grade school at McDonald Creek, Mountain City and Ogden, Utah. Her parents owned a homestead on Alleghany Creek and Doranna rode horseback to school in Mountain City, a distance of about 10 miles. She graduated from Elko High School in 1928 and married Ray (Budge) Rizzi, a rancher, the day after graduation. In her senior year of high school, she won a state typing contest held in Reno.

During the first years of her marriage, Doranna moved with her husband to the Bruneau Canyon to ranch. The only access to the ranch was by way of horseback or on foot as it was located at the bottom of a canyon on a river. All supplies had to be transported by horseback or carried afoot. Not even a wagon could get to the ranch. From there they moved to Rowland, Nev. and later to Mountain City, always ranching.

Doranna lived on a ranch in Elko County all of her life until entering the Elko Care Center, now known as Heritage Rehabilitation Center in Elko. She has always been active in the hayfield, riding horseback which she really enjoyed, feeding cattle, cooking meals and doing the daily work expected of a ranch wife. Until her knee and hip operations and age overtook her, there was not much she could not do on the ranch.

Doranna is survived by two daughters, Shirley Woolery of Springfield, Ore. and Deanna Alacano of Bend, Ore. She has seven grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. In addition to her parents, Doranna was preceded in death by her husband, Ray (Budge) Rizzi in 1969 and her son Don Rizzi in 1998.

Funeral services will be held at Burns Funeral Home on Wednesday, Dec. 18, at 10 a.m. with Rev. Al Fry from the First Presbyterian Church officiating. Interment will follow in Burns Memorial Garden.

In her memory friends may contribute to the Northeastern Nevada Museum, the Hospital Auxiliary Tree of Life, or the charity of your choice.
