Sidney Turpin

Services for Sidney Dee Turpin, 78, who passed away Jan. 4 in Pahrump, will be held at 4 p.m. Saturday at Church on a Mission, 4760 Pahrump Valley Boulevard, with Pastors Paul, Keith and Bobby presiding.

He was born July 20, 1926 in El Reno, Okla., and moved to Pahrump in 1979, coming from the Pomona, Chino area of California.

He served in the U.S. Army, worked as a plumber and was self-employed. He also worked as an independent contractor for the Las Vegas Review-Journal.

He was a lifetime member of the Pomona VFW and a member of the Pomona color guard. He served as a deacon for New Hope Christian Fellowship church.

His wife Sandra Turpin of Pahrump; sons Sidney Paul Turpin, William Carl (Nancy) Turpin and Christopher D. (Windy) Turpin, all of California; daughters Sheila Gail (Paul) Hicks and Shawn Denise (Mike) Martinez, both of California, and Coady Marie Turpin and Skye Danielle Turpin, both of Nevada; 13 grandchildren; and four great grandchildren, survive him.

Gerald Pickens

Private family services were held for Gerald F. Pickens, 46, who died Jan. 6 in Pahrump.

He was born Dec. 9, 1958 in Merced, Calif. He enlisted in the U.S. Navy after graduating from high school in Eldon, Mo., in 1977. He moved to Pahrump four years ago and enjoyed bowling at Mountain View Casino.

He was loved by all members of his family and he had many friends. His memory will be cherished by all.

His mother Nadine; brothers Edward "Greg" and Gary of Pahrump; daughter Christy of Las Vegas; grandfather Noble Taylor; and aunts, uncles, nieces and nephews in California and Arizona, survive him.

Max Hendrickson

No services are scheduled for Max Hendrickson, 87, who passed away Dec. 23, 2004 in Las Vegas.

He was born Aug. 30, 1917 in Illinois. He was a resident of Pahrump for 11 years, coming from California.

He served in the U.S. Air Force during World War II, and then worked in the aircraft industry before retiring.

His son Richard N. Hendrickson of Illinois; daughters Carol LaBate of Connecticut and Donna Potillo of New York; and several grandchildren and great grandchildren survive him.

Vincent Belvill

Private family services will be held for Vincent E. Belvill, 86, who passed away Jan. 10 in Las Vegas.

He was born July 27, 1918 in Kansas and was nine-year resident of Pahrump.

He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II and then worked as a heavy equipment operator for state government until retiring.

His wife Helen Belvill of Pahrump; son David Belvill of Pahrump; daughters Pamela Arone of Pahrump, Rebecca Erickson of Elko, Linda Byrd of Eldon, Mo., and Janice Haas of Glendora, Calif.; brother James Belvill of Brighton, Colo.; 14 grandchildren; 25 great grandchildren; and one great-great grandchild survive him.

Robert Palmer

A memorial service for Robert S. Palmer, 66, who died Jan. 11, will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at Affordable Cremation & Burial Service, 2437 N. Decatur Blvd. in Las Vegas.

He was born Dec. 25, 1938 in Denver, Colo., and moved to Pahrump 15 months ago.

A veteran of the U.S. Navy, he retired as Petty Officer First Class.

His wife Wilma Palmer of Pahrump; daughters Robin Palmer of Portland, Ore., Elizabeth Pittsley of San Diego, Calif., and Mary Palmer of Las Vegas; sons Donald Palmer of Cortez, Colo., and Robert Palmer of Newton, Ks., mother Lois Walsh of Brewster, Wash.; sister Melinda Carrieri of Brewster; brother David Palmer of Miami, Fla.; seven grandchildren; and one great grandchild survive him.

Donations may be made to Nathan Adelson Hospice.

Joseph Gross

Graveside services for Joseph J. Gross, 88, who died Jan. 12, will be held at 1:20 p.m. Wednesday at Southern Nevada Veterans Memorial cemetery.

He was born May 5, 1916 in Dawson, N.M. and was a 16-year resident of Pahrump.

He served in the U.S. Army during World War II and then worked as a service technician in the heating and plumbing industries before retiring.

His wife Mary E. Gross of Pahrump; sons Bart Gross of Pahrump, Larry Gross of Long Beach, Calif., Bob Gross of Fairfield, Calif., and Michael Gross of Laverne, Calif.; 12 grandchildren; and 18 great grandchildren survive him.

In lieu of flowers donations may be made to Nathan Adelson Hospice.

Geneva Heinz

Visitation for Geneva R. Heinz, 67, who passed away Jan. 19 in Las Vegas, will be held from 5-8 p.m. Saturday at Pahrump Family Mortuary. Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Sunday at Grandview cemetery.

She was born Sept. 20, 1937 in Mt. Vernon, Ill., and was a resident of Pahrump for eight years.

She worked for SBC/ Ameritech before retiring and was a member of Moose Lodge 808.

Her daughters Rebecca (Vernon) Bennett of Washington, Ill., and Anastocia Judi-Linn Adcock of Pahrump; sons Curtis (Paula) Reed and Steven Souza, both of Las Vegas; sisters Loretta Thomas of Everett, Wash., Karen (Michael) Thomas of Sherman, Ill., and Jaqueline (Eli) DeLosSantos of Littlefield, Texas; five grandchildren; and three great grandchildren survive her.

Her mother Golden Morris, father Arthur Lyle, husband Richard Heinz and daughter Jeanni Heinz preceded her in death.

James Dorner

James Joseph "JJ" Dorner, 66, passed away Jan. 10 in Pahrump. Interment will be at 10 a.m. today at Boulder City Veterans cemetery.

He was born April 12, 1938 in Philadelphia, Pa., and was a 10-year resident of Pahrump, coming from Fairfield, Calif.

He had a career as a flight engineer in the U.S. Air Force, retiring in 1976 as a Master Sergeant with commendations for Asian airlifts performed during the Korean War.

His daughters Karen Waters and Diane King, both of Tucson, Ariz., and Frances Breed of Phoenix; son Joseph A. Dorner of Kingman, Ariz.; sisters Ella (Pat) Macasieb of Philadelphia, Doris A. Balzer and Dolores Dorner, both of Nottingham, Pa.; brothers Charles Dorner of Philadelphia and Andrew Dorner of Essington, Pa.; and nine grandchildren survive him.

Kenneth Harris Jr.

Kenneth R. Harris Jr., 55, passed away Jan. 13 in Las Vegas.

He was born June 22, 1949 in Panquitch, Utah and was a 12-year resident of Pahrump.

He served in the U.S. Army and was retired from Teamsters Local No. 631.

His wife Fay Harris of Pahrump; children Amy Harris, Heather Polasky and Shane Arrendale, all of Las Vegas; brothers Larry Dell Harris of Hurricane, Utah and William J. Harris of Las Vegas; sister Mary Lee Parsons of Blue Diamond; and two grandchildren survive him.

William Lewis

No services are planned for William Lewis, 95, who passed away Jan. 18 in Carlsbad, Calif.

He was born Nov. 25, 1909 in Los Angeles. He graduated from San Fernando High School in 1927 and from UCLA in 1934 with a Master's degree. in Physics.

He was employed as a meteorologist by the U.S. Weather Bureau starting in 1929 and later worked for NASA.

His pioneering paper, "Factors to be Considered in the Design of Aircraft Ice Prevention," won the Robert M. Losey Award (now known as the Losey Atmospheric Sciences Award) in 1949 from the Institute of Aeronautical Sciences. The research was done while he was still at the Weather Bureau but assigned to Ames Aeronautical Laboratory at Moffett Field, Calif., for NACA (National Advisory Committee on Aeronautics), the predecessor to NASA, for whom he later worked for many years.

More recently a resident of Lancaster, Calif., he lived in Pahrump from 1986 to 1999 where he was honored for serving more than 10,000 hours as a volunteer for the Pahrump Community Library.

His daughter Elizebeth J. Graff of Oceanside, Calif.; son Raymond Lewis of Greer, S.C.; grandchildren Diana Simon of Palmdale, Calif., Gregory Allen Lewis of Boiling Springs, S.C., and Allen Lewis of Greer; and great grandchildren Desiree Case, Danielle Simon and Jack McIntire of Palmdale survive him.

Donations may be made to the Palmdale City Library, 700 E. Palmdale Blvd., Palmdale, CA 93550, specifying "youth library books." (1/18/05)

Michael Zacharias

Michael Henry Zacharias, 87, passed away Jan. 17 in Las Vegas.

He was born June 11, 1917 in Cleveland, Ohio and was a resident of Pahrump.

He served in the U.S. Air Force during World War II and worked as a driver for a local union before retiring.

His wife Helen Zacharias of Pahrump; son Edward Zacharias of Las Vegas; daughter Barbara Fuss of Las Vegas; grandsons Tommy and Brian Fuss of Las Vegas; and granddaughters Rachel and Nicole Zacharias of Gardnerville, survive him.

Betty Kuhry

Private family services will be held for Betty Jane Kuhry, 82, of Pahrump, who passed away Jan. 19.

She worked in ceramics before retiring.

Her daughter Barbara Lehman; four grandchildren, six great grandchildren and two great-great grandchildren survive her. (1/19/05)
