Mary Vicari

Mary J. Vicari, 79, wife of Anthony C. Vicari of Pahrump, passed away Jan. 27.

She was born May 25, 1925 in Nebraska and was a longtime resident of San Jose, Calif., before moving to Pahrump. She worked for many years for the Santa Clara County Superintendent of Schools.

Tony and Mary, as they were known by their many friends and fellow bingo players, celebrated their 56th wedding anniversary this past Nov. 7.

Her husband Anthony of Pahrump; daughter Kathryn; sons Charles and John; three grandchildren; and 15 great grandchildren survive her.

Three children, Mary Diane, Anthony Jr. and Michael, preceded her in death.

Alice Jones

Private family services will be held for Alice Louise Jones, 81, who passed away Jan. 30 in Las Vegas.

She was born Feb. 1, 1923 in Hot Springs, Ark., and moved to Pahrump five years ago from Quail Valley, Calif. She was a homemaker.

Her daughter Felicia LaRosa of Torrance, Calif.; sister Georgia White of Prescott, Ariz.; brothers Thomas Johnson of Riverside, Calif. and Ray Johnson of Pahrump; four grandchildren; and three great grandchildren survive her.

In lieu of flowers donations may be made to Nathan Adelson Hospice.

John Floyd

A memorial service for John Carlton Floyd, 64, who passed away Feb. 8 in Las Vegas, will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at Pahrump Family Mortuary.

He was born Aug. 21, 1940 in Amarillo, Texas and moved to Pahrump 42 years ago, coming from Chowchilla, Calif.

He retired in 1999 and was a member of the Nye County Sheriff's Search and Rescue team.

His wife Kay of Pahrump, daughter Shelley of Pahrump; son Christopher of Pahrump; mother Beatrice of Pahrump; brothers Ron of Pahrump and Wayne of Las Vegas survive him.

His father and one brother preceded him in death.

Leopoldo Melero

A memorial service for Leopoldo "Leo" Avitia Melero III, 46, who passed away Feb. 8 in Pahrump, will be held at 5 p.m. Feb. 19 at 3940 N. Point Drive.

He was born Nov. 26, 1958 in Santa Cruz, Calif. and moved to Pahrump eight years ago from Bullhead City, Ariz.

He was a 30-year mechanic and a member of Pahrump Moose Lodge No. 808.

His wife Angelina (Angel) Two Bears-Melero; son Capt. Sean David; daughters Victoria and Rosalie; mother Darlene and stepfather Adolph Sporman of Pahrump; brother Alan Almand; aunts Rose and Sheryl; uncle Chuck; grandfather Russell; and grandchildren Tiffany, Zoey, Patrick and Philip survive him.

In lieu of flowers donations may be made in his memory to St. Joseph Indian School, Chamberlain, SD 57326. (2/8/05)

Robert Johnson

Services for Robert T. Johnson (Kid), 78, who passed away Jan. 28 in Pahrump, will be held at 3 p.m. Saturday at First Southern Baptist Church.

He was born July 4, 1926 in New York City and was an 11-year resident of Pahrump.

He retired in 1984 and was involved in senior bowling.

His wife Mary of Pahrump; daughters Debbie and Laura Gail, both of New York City; and two grandchildren survive him.

Patricia Ayers

Services have been held for Patricia Ann Ayers, 66, who passed away Feb. 7 in Las Vegas.

She was born March 17, 1938 in Custer, S.D. and moved to Pahrump in March 2002, coming from Las Vegas.

She loved her family and friends.

Her husband Gaylord of Pahrump; sons Douglas Ayers of Pahrump and Dennis (Karen) Ayers of Las Vegas; brothers Steven and Clint Cattles of Wyoming; three grandchildren; and one great grandchild survive her.

Neptune Society of Nye County handled the arrangements. (2/7/05)

Martin Lewis Birdsell, Jr.

Marty Birdsell, formerly a resident of Crystal, was born in Santa Barbara, Calif., on July 28 1936, to Martin Birdsell and Agnete Christensen Birdsell. He graduated from Santa Barbara High School and attended the University of California-Santa Barbara.

He passed away at Sarah House in Santa Barbara on Jan. 16, from cancer.

Survivors include his daughter, Jan Birdsell; his sister Dr. Sharon Sharpnack of Sisters, Ore., and her daughters Renee and Dawn; his sister Dr. Susan Conner and son Brian Conner of Bend, Ore.; and Susan's son Louis Conner, his wife Lee and son Joshua of New Zealand; his Aunt Twila Christensen; Jan's mother Karen May; and many cousins and treasured friends. A memorial for family and personal friends will be held Sunday in Summerland, Calif.

Marty began his working life as a teenager selling peanuts and popcorn at the local baseball stadium, and caddying at the golf course. He worked at the Santa Barbara Ice Plant, and later was employed by the Southern Pacific Railroad. He managed service stations for Standard Oil Company for several years. He found his true calling traveling the world as a merchant seaman.

Marty was a vital part of the Santa Barbara community, living at various times in Santa Ynez, Summerland, and the Nevada desert. He loved the wide-open spaces of ocean and desert, but always returned to his home and friends on Mountain Drive. Marty's family is very grateful to his friends in the Mountain Drive, Santa Barbara and Summerland communities for continuing to nurture and support him up to the end of his life.

Thanks also go to Marty's Hospice team, nurses Maria Nelson and Joseph Newlan, Jan Broderick, the staff at Serenity House and the highly creative caregivers at Sarah House.

In lieu of flowers, donations to Sarah House, 2612 Modoc Road, Santa Barbara, CA 93105, or to your favorite charity, would be gratefully accepted.

Timothy Jones

A memorial service for Timothy (Tim) Jones, 53, who died Feb. 4 in Pahrump, will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday at Faith Fellowship Church, located behind Radio Shack in Wheeler Springs Plaza.

He was born Jan. 27, 1952 in Rock Springs, Wyo.

His mother and stepfather Geneva and Bruce Brown; son Timothy Shaine; brothers Joseph, Michael and Richard; and stepsister Lori Hill survive him.

His father, Joe W. Jones, preceded him in death. (2/4/05)

Clifford Empey

Services for Clifford Ronald Empey, 70, who passed away Feb. 14 at home in Pahrump, will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday at Pahrump Community Church, located at 1061 E. Wilson Road. Friends and family will gather afterwards at Wulfy's Restaurant.

He was born Nov. 17, 1934 in Pocatello, Idaho and was a 35-year resident of Pahrump.

He graduated from Oakland Technical High School and served in the U.S. Marine Corp. He worked in the gaming industry for the Tropicana Hotel, retiring in August of 2000 after 20 years of service.

His wife of 47 years, Patricia Empey, of Pahrump; sons Michael Empey and Eric (Julie) Empey, both of Henderson, and Richard (Jamie) Empey of Las Vegas; daughter Julianne Dudenski of Pahrump; and seven grandchildren survive him.

David Boyd

Funeral services for David Cannon Boyd, 84, who passed away Feb. 14 in Amargosa Valley, will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday at the Amargosa Valley Community Center. Graveside services will follow at Amargosa Desert Memorial cemetery.

He was born March 10, 1920 in Shreveport, La., and moved to Amargosa Valley in 1965 coming from Houston.

He was a member of the VFW, NRA, American Legion, and was past president of the Lions Club, Death Valley.

He loved his family and friends.

His wife Betty Jo Boyd of Amargosa Valley; sons Charles Randolph Boyd and Eric Douglas Boyd; stepsons Thomas Allen Smith and Tracy Smith; daughter Patricia Louise Best; stepdaughter Beverly Jo Creel, brothers Alfred Kent, Lloyd Stoessel and Joseph Lyon Boyd; nine grandchildren; and two great grandchildren survive him.

Judy Ragar

Judy Eileen Shanley Ragar, 57, passed away Feb. 16 at her home in Pahrump.

She was born Oct. 20, 1947 to Thomas P. and Mary Shanley of Auburn, Calif. She grew up in the foothills of the Sierras in Auburn and graduated from Placer County High School in 1965. She cooked at Kay's Diner so she could attend Sierra Jr. College and then Chico State. She received her degree in elementary education at the University of Nevada Reno. She went on to be an elementary educator for nearly 30 years.

In 1968 Judy married Bob and for 37 years they made rural Nevada their home, living in Lake Tahoe, Reno, Austin, Eureka, Gabbs, Tonopah and Pahrump. Many will remember her generosity and community involvement.

She loved to read and enjoyed playing cards with family and friends. She was very athletic and enjoyed most outdoor activities. She had a passion for life and family, and made the lives of those who came in contact with her brighter and better. She will be greatly missed.

Her husband Bob; sons Tom and Bob; grandson Ebbett; father Thomas Shanley; sister Suzy Ronk; niece Maureen Michelle Santiago; aunts Donna Serna and Evelyn Smith; and uncle Ralph Kaffka, survive her.
