Johannes van Bu˙tene

Johannes "Papa John" van Bu˙tene, 76, passed away Aug. 15.

He was born March 31, 1929 in P˙nacker, Holland and was a resident of Pahrump since 1996.

He was locally known as "Papa John" when he drove the in-law racing mini stock No. 12 at the young age of 72.

He was a lover of the outdoors and will be greatly missed.

His wife Henny, son Rick (Carla) and their children Brandon and Justin; daughter Victoria (Craig) and their children Spencer and Logan, survive him. (8/15/05)

Rita Brooks

A memorial service for Rita M. Brooks, 79, who passed away Aug. 19 in Las Vegas, will be held at 9 a.m. today at the Neptune Society chapel. Burial will follow at Chief Tecopa cemetery.

She was born Jan. 30, 1926 in Honolulu, Hawaii, and moved to Pahrump in 1999, coming from Florida.

A Pearl Harbor survivor, she worked for BX Services in several military bases across the U.S. and overseas as a cafeteria cashier and manager.

She was a member of Our Lady of the Valley Catholic Church and, said family members, "she was a good soul."

Her husband of 56 years, William J. Brooks, of Pahrump; son Daniel E. Brooks of California; daughters Mary Hermensen of New York and Bernadette (Tom) Prom of Michigan; 10 grandchildren; and 15 great grandchildren survive her.

A son, Dennis G. Brooks, and a daughter, Theresa A. Brooks, preceded her in death.

Neptune Society of Nye County handled the arrangements. (8/19/05)

Wanda Dollens

Wanda Ann Dollens, 63, passed away Aug. 16. Graveside services were held Tuesday at Santa Paula cemetery in Santa Paula, Calif.

She was born June 24, 1942 in Ventura, Calif. A homemaker, she was a resident of Pahrump for nine years.

Her husband Bobby Dollens; children Beth Dollens and Scott Dollens; and grandchildren Samantha and Stephanie Dollens survive her.

Ted Mayr Mortuary in Ventura, Calif., handled the arrangements. (6/16/05)

Betty Nixon

No services will be held for Betty Lucille Nixon, 88, who passed away Aug. 25 in Pahrump.

She was born March 17, 1917 in Ohio and was a resident of Nevada for seven years, coming from Kentucky.

She was self-employed in the home healthcare industry and was of the Protestant faith.

Her son James M. Nixon of Washington; daughter-in-law Sandra Nixon of Pahrump; granddaughter Andrea Nixon of Pahrump; and grandson Aaron Nixon of Washington survive her.

Her parents preceded her in death.

Gail Dixon

A memorial service for Gail Jean Dixon, 63, who passed away Aug. 24, will be held at 6 p.m. today at Pahrump Family Mortuary, 5441 S. Vicki Ann Road.

She was born May 9, 1942 in Scranton, Pa., and moved to Pahrump in 2000. She was a previous resident of Las Vegas from 1964-2000.

She worked as a secondary science teacher, a dean of students, an assistant principal and high school principal at El Dorado and Mojave schools in the Clark County School District for 28 years.

Gail was very active in the educational field and the community. After moving to Pahrump, she spent two years assisting the teachers at Rosemary Clarke Middle School. Her passion was the use of music in the classroom and brain-based learning.

Her daughter Elizabeth Ann of Las Vegas and sisters, Judy Fesnock and Diane Snyder, both of Pahrump, survive her.

In lieu of flowers memorial donations may be made to the Rosemary Clarke Middle School library in her name at 4201 N. Blagg Rd., Pahrump 89060.

Tony Sudo

No services will be held for Tony Dwaine Sudo, 74, who passed away Aug. 25 in Pahrump.

He was born Jan. 3, 1931 in Pueblo, Colo., and has been a resident of Pahrump since 1995, coming from Coaldale, Colo.

He served in the U.S. Navy and then worked as a truck driver. He was a lifetime member of the VFW, a member of the North American Hunting Club and a member of the National Rifle Association. He loved his grandchildren and great grandchildren and enjoyed hunting and fishing.

His wife of 53 years, Mafalda, of Pahrump; brother John Sudo; grandsons Conan Currigan and Johnathan Currigan; granddaughters Alexis, Allyson, Ashleigh and Tyler; and great grandchildren Erin, Caitlyn and Wesley, survive him.

His daughter Linda J. Rogers and son Anthony E. Sudo preceded him in death.

Neptune Society of Nye County handled the arrangements. (8/25/05)

Donald Phariss

Viewing for Donald Leroy Phariss, 53, who passed away Aug. 30 in Las Vegas, will be held from 1-3 p.m. Saturday at Pahrump Family Mortuary. Services will follow at 3 p.m.

He was born Dec. 2, 1951 in California and was a seven-year resident of Nevada.

His father Harvey Phariss and mother Lorraine Phariss of Nevada; sister Lana Snodgrass of California; brother Ronald Phariss of California; daughters Theresa Meza and Stephenie Madison, both of California, and Jamie Osina of Texas; and four grandchildren survive him. (98/30/05)

Frank Woner

Services for Frank Payton Woner, 73, who passed away Aug. 30 in Idaho Falls Hospital, will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, in Teton, Idaho. Internment will be at the Cache-Clawson cemetery in Tetonia immediately following.

He was born Aug. 9, 1932 in Ft. Morgan, Colo. He moved to Nevada in 1958.

During his life, he was a dairy farmer, a building inspector, a General Manager of the Pahrump Ranch, a Project Manager for Preferred Equities Corporation, a Justice of the Peace in Pahrump and served on the Soil Conservation District Board. He also owned his own trucking company, was a self-taught CAD draftsman, and was a homebuilder in Wyoming and Idaho.

His wife Janice Woner; children Kerrie (Mike) Borta, Janet (Mark) Hansen, Laurie Wall, Joanna Johnson, Benny (Cathy) Woner and Glenn (Kim) Woner; sisters Lois Clark, Jacqueline Ruud, Leila (Don) Upton, Charlotte (Ron) Floyd, Margaret (Angel) Elgorriaga and Glenna (Richard) Sims; 18 grandchildren and eight great grandchildren survive him.

A memorial service for those who cannot make it to Idaho will be held at the Pahrump Ward of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints at 10 a.m. on Sept. 24. (8/30/05)

Lillian Crocker

Viewing for Lillian Mae Crocker, 74, who passed away Aug. 29 in Las Vegas, will be held at 10 a.m. Tuesday. A graveside service will be held at 11 a.m.

She was born July 9, 1931 in Elbowlake, Minn. She was a five-year resident of Pahrump, coming from Las Vegas and was a member of the Charleston Parkward Church.

Her husband Wilbur D. Crocker of Pahrump; daughters Jane Sobalvarro and Janet Martinez, both of Las Vegas; sons Gerry and Robyn Crocker, both of Pahrump; sister Mary Ann Cobb, of Texas; and brothers Lloyd and Richard Johnson, both of Minnesota survive her.

Scott McConnell

Visitation was held Thursday for Scott Anthony McConnell, 31, who passed away Aug. 29 in Las Vegas.

He was born April 17, 1974 in Fallon and lived in Southern Nevada for 25 years.

He grew up in Pahrump and graduated from Pahrump Valley High School. He served in the U.S. Marines and worked as an electrician for the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers.

His mother and stepfather, Patricia and John Sena of North Las Vegas; father and stepmother Ken and Julie McConnell of Tuscon, Ariz.; daughter Tori McConnell of Pahrump; son Myles McConnell of North Carolina; sister Brandi McConnell (Pete Ligeros) of Las Vegas; brothers Steve McConnell of Carlin and Kyle McConnell of Tuscon; maternal grandparents I. V. and Alemeda Meeks of Fallon; aunt and uncle Linda and Jim Loepky of Fallon; uncle and aunt Larry and Sherry Meeks of Fallon; uncle Jack Sena of Trinidad, Colo.; paternal grandmother Glenmar McConnell of Hawthorne; uncle and aunt Tom and Delores McConnell of Ridgecrest, Calif.; aunt and uncle Bonnie and Reo DeMars of Hawthorne; and uncle and aunt Mike and Suzy McConnell of Hawthorne survive him.

The open house memorial for Scott Anthony McConnell scheduled for Saturday has been canceled. McConnell, 31, passed away Aug. 29 in Las Vegas.

Arthur Hansen

Arthur Theodore Hansen, 86, passed away Sept. 1 at the Bryant Nursing Center in Edmond, Okla.

He was born Dec. 19, 1918 in Rigby, Idaho.

He was a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints and served in the US Army during World War II. He graduated from Brigham Young University in 1947. He spent most of his life teaching high school English.

He moved to Shoshone, Calif., from Utah in 1967, where he and his wife Jean taught at Death Valley High School until retiring in 1989. After retiring, he and Jean moved to Apple Valley, Calif. in 1993 and then to Edmond, Okla. in 1998.

His children Cherie, Dorothy and Ted; two sisters; 13 grandchildren; and 5 great-grandchildren survive him. (9/1/05)

William Harvey

William Angrove Harvey, 73, passed away Sept. 7 in Las Vegas.

He was born April 29, 1932 in Canada. He was a salesman and served in the US Army. He moved to Pahrump in 1992, coming from Las Vegas.

His sister Marilyn Andrews; children Cathy, Mike, Wendy and Rick; grandchildren Brandy, Tom, Brittany, Nicole, Noah, Megan and Luke; and great-grandchild Rayce survive him.

No services will be held. Neptune Society of Nye County handled the arrangements. (9/7/05)

Elaine Bennett

No services will be held for Elaine M. (Caverly) Bennett, 53, who passed away Aug. 31. in Tonopah.

She was born Feb. 21, 1952 in Minnesota and lived in Pahrump, Amargosa and Beatty since 1993. She worked at Longstreet Casino, the Beatty library, the Test Site and as a census taker.

Her husband Gary K. Bennett of Beatty; daughter Tara Lee Bennett of New Plymouth, Idaho; and two grandchildren survive her.

Donations in her memory may be made to local libraries.
