Eugene Kendall

A memorial service for Eugene W. Kendall, 75, who passed away May 16, will be held at 1:30 p.m. Saturday at Palm Mortuary-Eastern, 7600 S. Eastern Ave, in Las Vegas.

He was born June 16, 1930 in Hay Springs, Neb. He was a 27-year resident of Pahrump.

He served in the U.S. Navy during the Korean War and later retired as a mechanical engineer.

He also donated a lot of his time caring for family and friends.

His son Michael Kendall of Henderson; daughters Gena Kendall of Henderson and Sarena Ruberio of Las Vegas; brother Keith Kendall-Browne of Cody, Wyo.; grandsons Chase Parker and Gage Colagiovanni; and granddaughters Kendall Ruberio and Kylynn Ruberio survive him. (05/16/06)

Linda Rapp

Linda Lee Rapp, 48, of Visalia, Calif., passed away May 9.

She was a wonderful mother to Jared (Kristy) of Maryland, Joe and Jeff of Three Rivers, Calif., and Faith of Modesto, Calif.

She was the daughter of John and Doris Huntsucker and the sister of Vikki (Geri) of Three Rivers, Rick (Debi) of Pahrump, Deanna of Visalia and Bert of Visalia.

She was the grandmother of Kelsey, Cory and Lyllian.

The greatest things in her life were spending time with her children and family, camping, swimming and doing crafts.

She was loved and will be missed. (05/09/06)

Linda Farmer

Private family services will be held for Linda Raye Farmer, 70, who passed away May 22 in Pahrump.

She was born Oct. 1, 1935 in Childress, Texas. She was a Pahrump resident since 1997.

She worked as an advertising salesperson and was a member of the First Southern Baptist Church.

Her husband of 50 years Robert Farmer; mother Jewel Burns; daughter Susan Gates; son Mike Farmer; brother Buddy Burns; three grandchildren and dog Babe survive her.

Neptune Society of Nye County handled the arrangements. (05/22/06)

Jerry Talley

Beloved brother, father and grandfather Jerry Ray Talley, 62, passed away May 17 at his home in Pahrump.

He was born March 5, 1944 to Elmer Wayne and Opal Mae Talley in Tupelo, Okla. He was an eight-year resident of Pahrump, coming from Las Vegas.

He was employed by the Freeman Company and was a member of Teamsters Local No. 631.

He was an avid sportsman who enjoyed hunting and fishing with his family and friends. He will be sorely missed by all who loved him.

His wife of 41 years Cheryl; son Robert (Amy) Talley; daughter Tammy Talley; and three grandchildren survive him.

His parents preceded him in death.

Carl Sommer

Private services will be held for Carl Willis Sommer, 75, who passed away May 14 at his daughter's home in California.

He was born Aug. 6, 1930 in Pasadena, Calif., to Carl Sommers and Violet Willis. He was a 13-year resident of Pahrump.

He served in the U.S. Army reserves. He was a sheet metal worker and retired from the Sheet Metal Union in 1986.

His daughters Janet Garcia, Patty Sohutes and Sally Teese; son Dan Sommer; brother Niel Sommer and Helen Chandler survive him.

Desert View Funeral Park in Victorville, Calif., handled the arrangements. (05/14/06)

Alfred Maddix

Services for Alfred J. Maddix, 82, who passed away May 22, will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday at St. Joseph Catholic Church. A Rosary will be recited at 7 p.m. today at Pahrump Family Mortuary.

He was born June 7, 1923 in South Portland, Maine. He was the son of Alfred and Mary (O'Connor) Maddix and graduated from Monroe High School in the Bronx, N.Y.

He served in the U.S. Army during World War II, was wounded in action and spent two years at Percy Jones Hospital.

Upon his release from the hospital, he went to work at the Battle Creek Gas Company in Battle Creek, Mich. He served as the union president and retired from there in 1985.

He and his wife of 60 years Winifred (Watson-Deacon) then moved to Nevada, where they lived for 17 years. He attended both St. Joseph Catholic Church and St. Jerome Catholic Church.

His sons Douglas M. Maddix of Utica, N.Y., Joseph R. (Kathleen) Maddix of Battle Creek, Dennis "Omar" M. (Jean) Maddix of Colorado Springs, Colo., Alfred E. (Crystal) Maddix of Battle Creek, Edward W. Maddix of Battle Creek and Brian J. Maddix of Battle Creek; daughter Mary E. (Melvin McGhan) Correll of Battle Creek; 27 grandchildren; many great grandchildren; and brother Bartlet G. (Mary) Maddix of Battle Creek survive him.

He was preceded in death by his wife Winifred in October 2001 and his son Christopher in 1971.

Interment will be at Southern Nevada Veterans Memorial cemetery in Boulder City. (05/22/06)

Michael Billing

Private family services will be held for Michael Lee Billing, 61, who passed away May 20 in Pahrump.

He was born March 13, 1945 in New Jersey. He was a three and-a-half-year resident of Pahrump, coming from Las Vegas.

He worked as a truck driver for Pan Western.

His wife Linda Lee Billing of Pahrump; daughters Wendy Schaefer and Dawn Bratcher, both of Michigan and Tiesha Doty of Pahrump; sons Eric, Mark and Paul Leach, all of Pahrump; and 12 grandchildren survive him.

Leila Shrider

A memorial service for Leila M. Shrider, who passed away May 13 at home in Laughlin, will be given by the Order of the Eastern Star at 2 p.m. June 17 in Bullhead City, Ariz.

She was born July 12, 1935 in Reno to Frank and Bess Scott. She attended grade school in Reno and graduated form high school in Bishop, Calif.

She wed Army Corporal Donald Shrider from Silver Peak on Dec. 29, 1951 in Tonopah. They lived at several Electric Power Company Plant locations, which included Redmond, Ore., and the Sierra Nevada area until they relocated in Silver Peak to be closer to family. They purchased their own business, a motel/gas station in Goldfield in 1959 and raised a family of four, and at times, increased their family with cousins and foster children through the years. Her foundation in life was the importance of family.

She joined the Order of the Eastern Star in Bridgeport, Calif., in 1954. Her home chapter became the Gold Nugget Chapter in Goldfield and served as Worthy Matron four times since 1962. She also joined the Daughters of the Nile, Amman-Ra Temple in Reno to help support The Shriner's Hospitals for Children.

She worked in every office of the Esmeralda County courthouse, including the position of deputy sheriff. She worked at the Esmeralda County School District, ending her 18 years with the county. She also enjoyed working for Hughes Tool Company and sharing her knowledge of the mining industry and law in Tonopah. Upon retirement in 1992 she and her husband traveled the western states and attended Eastern Star and Masonic functions, while maintaining a base in Shoshone.

Her husband Donald O. Shrider; daughters Beverly (Ralph) Relyca, Louise "Beth" (Tom) Melrose and Dona (Ed) Rannells; son Carl Shrider; grandchildren Candra Relyea, Misty Davis, Tanya Davis, Chad Relyeca, Rebecca Shrider and Cole Shrider; and great grandchildren Shanece Relyea and Tayler Lusk survive her.

Donations in lieu of flowers may be made to The Shriner's Hospitals for Children. (05/13/06)

Shelby Dodd

A memorial service was held Wednesday for Shelby Jean Dodd, 69, who passed away May 25, 2006 in Las Vegas.

She was born Feb. 20, 1937 in Linden, Tenn. She was a nine-year resident of Pahrump.

She was a member of the Moose.

Her husband Ronald Dodd of Pahrump; daughters Jeannie Pierro of Corona, Calif., and Kimberly Pietenpol of Lincoln, Neb.; sons Stan Clark of Anaheim, Calif., and William Clark of Pomona, Calif.; and seven grandchildren survive her.

Robert Smith

Services are pending for Robert Smith Jr., who passed away May 26, 2006 at his home in Rancho Dominguez, Calif.

He was born Nov. 18, 1929 in Smithport, Pa.

He was a retired Navy officer. He lived in Pahrump for many years with his wife Harriett prior to moving to California due to his illness.

His three children, two brothers, two sisters and aunt Joanne Clark of Pahrump survive him.

He will be buried in Hawaii with his wife Harriett, who passed away June 26, 2003. (05/26/06)

John Slingsby

Private family services will be held for John Robert Slingsby, 73, who passed away May 30, 2006 in Pahrump.

He was born Feb. 20, 1933 in Utica, Ill. He was a six-year resident of Pahrump, coming from Las Vegas.

He served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War. He was an operating engineer for Local No. 12.

His wife Rene Slingsby of Pahrump; daughter Jolene Slingsby of Granville, Ill.; son John Slingsby; sister Eileen Zachary of Grandridge, Ill.; and two grandchildren preceded him in death.
