Leonard Fullmer

Leonard Fullmer, 74, died March 12, 2007, in Las Vegas.

He was born Oct. 28, 1932, in Michigan. He was a nine-year resident of Pahrump, coming from Reno.

He was an electrician who served in the U.S. Army. He was a life member of the Elks in Rochester, Mich., and a member of Elks No. 2796 in Pahrump.

His wife Joan Fullmer of Pahrump; daughter Stacey (Gary) Gotham; son Jeffery (Sandra) Fullmer of Michigan; and four grandchildren survive him.

Lee Funeral Home & Cremation Service handled the arrangements. (03/12/07)

Cleve Montgomery

Services for Cleve Henry Montgomery, 76, who died March 9, 2007, in Las Vegas, will be held at noon (visitation 10 a.m. to noon) Thursday at Pahrump Family Mortuary, 5441 S. Vicki Ann Road.

He was born Sept. 7, 1930, in Wood County, W.Va. He was a two-year resident of Pahrump, coming from Las Vegas. He lived in Las Vegas for 10 years and spent 25 years in Orient, Ohio.

He was a staff sergeant in the U.S. Air Force. He later worked as a mechanic for the city of Columbus, Ohio and retired in 1992.

His wife Carolyn S. Montgomery of Pahrump; daughter Michelle (Frank) M. Payton of Pahrump; son Bradley (Char) A. Montgomery of Grove City, Ohio; sister Luanna Caplinger of Las Vegas; many nieces and nephews; and two grandchildren survive him.

His parents and two brothers preceded him in death. (03/09/07)

Joseph Hornyak

A memorial service for Joseph Donald Hornyak, 72, who died March 8, 2007, at Spring Valley Hospital in Las Vegas, will be held at 3 p.m. Saturday at Palm Mortuary-Henderson, 800 S. Boulder Highway.

He was born Oct. 2, 1934, in Erie, Pa. He was a 60-year resident of Las Vegas.

He served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War. He was an electrician and worked in construction.

He was a retired 50-year member of the I.B.E.W. Local 357.

His daughters Mary Jo Riley and Tina Pool, both of Las Vegas and Karen Cash of Oregon; son Jay Hornyak of Oregon; sisters Rosemary Martin of Henderson and Joanne Hook of California; brothers Larry Hornyak, Danny Hornyak and Jerry Hornyak, all of Henderson; and five grandchildren survive him.

Interment will be at Palm Memorial Park in Henderson. (03/08/07)

Frederick Shaw

Frederick William Shaw, 95, died March 5, 2007, in Las Vegas.

He was born Dec. 16, 1911. He was a 10-year resident of Pahrump, coming from Canada.

He was steel worker and was a member of the Masons and Rotary Club.

His daughter Marguerite Heryet of Pahrump; brother Donald Shaw of Canada; three grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; and six great-great-grandchildren survive him.

Pahrump Family Mortuary handled the arrangements. (03/05/07)

Patricia Empey

A memorial service for Patricia M. Empey, 69, who died March 4, 2007, in Las Vegas, will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday at the Pahrump Community Church, with a reception to follow at Artesia home after the service.

She was born Feb. 20, 1938, in Louisville, Ky. She was a 38-year resident of Pahrump, coming from Las Vegas.

She worked in the juvenile probation department with Nye County and retired after a long and rewarding career with the county.

Her sons Michael (Sara) Empey and Eric (Julie) Empey, both of Henderson, and Richard (Jamie) Empey of Las Vegas; daughter Julianne Dudenski of Pahrump; and seven grandchildren survive her.

Her husband Clifford Empey preceded her in death.

Donations in lieu of flowers may be made to St. Jude's Children's Foundation.

Robert Connell

Services for Robert "Whispering Bob" Connell, 58, who died Feb. 22, 2007, in Las Vegas, will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at Pahrump Family Mortuary.

He was born Dec. 4, 1948, in St. George, Utah. He was a three-year resident of Pahrump.

He was a truck driver and retired from Teamsters No. 631.

His children Rob (Laura) Connell of Pahrump, Court (K.C.) Connell and Shelly (Richard) Ziemelis of Las Vegas; brothers Deon (Rayola) Connell of St. George, Cleo (Janiel) Connell, Larry (Dorothy) Connell of Alamo and Guy (Francis) Connell of Las Vegas; sister Barbara (James) Guin of Pahrump; and grandchildren Cody Connell, Michael Ziemelis and Katie Ziemelis survive him.

His parents Chris and Matilda Connell preceded him in death. (02/22/07)

Leopold Poirier

Services for Leopold "Frenchy" Poirier, who died March 2, 2007, will be held at 4 p.m. Thursday at St. Benedict's Catholic Church at 1880 Jewel Lake Road, with interment in Beloeil, Quebec this spring.

He was born June 23, 1923, in Beloeil to Charles and Therese Poirier. He married Caroline Rogers in 1951 and they moved to Anchorage, Alaska that same year. They lived in Spenard and moved to the Sand Lake area in 1958, where they raised their six children.

Leopold became a certified welder in 1949 and worked throughout the state of Alaska through the Plumbers and Steamfitters Local 367 until his retirement in 1984.

He was a long-standing member of the Elks and Moose lodges. In the 23 years since his retirement, he thoroughly enjoyed summers fishing in Alaska and sharing his "famous" smoked salmon with family and friends in Alaska, Canada and Nevada.

He spent his winters in Pahrump golfing and established many close friendships. Living an active lifestyle, his favorite gift for his 70th birthday was his hockey skates, which renewed his childhood hobby. He also continued to golf 18 holes regularly until he was 81, and was elated when his three 7-year-old granddaughters took up the sport.

Nothing gave Leopold more pleasure than spending time with his children and grandchildren (or bragging about them to friends in Pahrump). He instilled in them all a sense of humor and a strong work ethic.

His brother Roger Poirier of Quebec; sons David Poirier of Oakdale, Calif., Robert Poirier of Seward, Alaska, Dana Poirier of Anacortes, Wash., and Dennis (Lisa) Poirier of Anchorage; daughters Shelley (Dan) Lynch and Louise (Steve) Wood, both of Anchorage; granddaughters Stace Nicholson of Phoenix, Ariz., Carissa Poirier of Fort Drum, N.Y., Danielle Poirler and Cami and Hannah Wood of Anchorage; great-grandson Justin Nicholson of Phoenix; former spouse Carol Poirier of Anchorage; and many nieces and nephews in the United States and Canada survive him.

His parents, eight siblings and close friend and brother-in-law Chuck Talbert preceded him in death.

Donations in lieu of flowers may be made to charitable organizations of one's choice.

Louie Dutton

A memorial service will be held at a later date for Louie Dutton, 79, who died March 4, 2007, at St. Rose Dominican Hospital-Siena Campus in Las Vegas.

He was born Feb. 25, 1928, in Perris, Calif. He was a 30-year resident of Las Vegas and Pahrump.

He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II. He was later an installer and retired after working in the mobile home industry.

His daughter Patricia Freese of Las Vegas; sons Kimble Dutton of Las Vegas and Alvin Smith of Pahrump; aunt Florence of Hemet, Calif.; uncle Herb Sturm of Santa Paula, Calif.; nine grandchildren and over 20 great-grandchildren survive him.

Palm Mortuary-Henderson, 800 S. Boulder Highway, in Las Vegas handled the arrangements. (03/04/07)

L.D. Eugene Wren

A memorial service for L.D. Eugene Wren, 78, who died Feb. 26, 2007, in Pahrump, will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday at the VFW Post on Homestead Road in Pahrump.

He was born May 9, 1928, in Paducah, Texas. He moved to Pahrump in 2000, coming from Idaho.

L.D. and his family moved from Texas to Las Vegas in 1932 when his father went to work building Hoover Dam. He graduated from Las Vegas High School in 1946 and then joined the U.S. Navy. After his discharge from the military, he attended Brigham Young University.

He was a lifetime member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars and a member of the American Legion.

L.D., a multi-talented man, had many skills and professions. At the age of 10, he started working at a meat market, sharpening knives, but it was not long before he was grinding hamburger and waiting on customers, standing on a box so he could see over the counter. By the time he was a teenager, he was a journeyman butcher. Between his ventures and adventures, he always had a meat cutting job on which to fall back.

L.D. was a professional bowler and bowled on the Show Boat team in Las Vegas for 20 years and on the Golden Nugget team for five years. With all his trophies and awards, nothing made him more proud than when he and his wife Juanita ran the Young American Bowling Alliance at the Bulldog Lanes in Nampa, Idaho. Hundreds of young kids went through the program. They parented a lot of kids and teens, which wasn't part of the program, but owing to the character of the Wrens. He will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved him.

Survivors are his daughter, Mary (Darrell) Melton of Las Vegas; brother Donald (Rose Marie) of Pahrump; sisters Nadine Gibson of Las Vegas and Dorothy (Derald) Beauford of Seminole, Okla.; life partner Marilyn of Pahrump; four grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.

Preceding him in death are his parents, Thomas Irwin Wren and Pearl Tapper Wren and his wife, Juanita Adcock Wren.

Donations in lieu of flowers may be made to the VFW. (02/26/07)

Tom Chancellor

Tom Chancellor, 82, a retired auto mechanic, died Feb. 7, 2007, in Jay, Okla.

He previously lived in Amargosa Valley and Hawthorne before moving to Grove, Okla. He was a member of the VFW and American Legion.

His sister Maggie Hoover of Loogootee, Ind.; sons William Tom and James Chancellor of Casa Grande, Ariz.; daughters Donna (Wendell) McMahan of Oklahoma City, Okla., Debbie (Dave) Myers of Amargosa Valley and Deanna Moreno of Sunland, Calif.; 11 grandchildren; and 19 great-grandchildren survive him.

Funeral arrangements were handled by Worley-Luginbuel Funeral Home in Grove. Interment was at Hickory Grove cemetery in Grove on Feb. 12, 2007. (02/07/07)

Donna Chadwick

Donna Lee King Chadwick, 57, died Feb. 15, 2007, in Las Vegas.

She was born April 30, 1949, in Coronado, Calif.

Donna, a true friend to everyone, lost her long battle with heart and lung disease, surrounded by her loved ones. She was the daughter of Richard King and James R. Harris and Dorothy Margaret Sowles King Harris.

Donna wanted everyone to know that she loved them and that her pain is gone and to thank everyone for their love and kindness. (02/15/07)

Fran Stratton

A memorial service for Fran Stratton, 81, who died Feb. 25, 2007, in Pahrump, will be held at 1 p.m. today at Our Lady of the Valley Catholic Church.

She was born March 23, 1925, in Iowa. She was a resident of Pahrump since 1985, coming from California.

Fran graduated from high school in May 1943, and in June married her beloved husband Max, who preceded her in death in 1998.

She was a homemaker who did volunteer work for many years in Iowa, California and Nevada with the Scouts and nursing. She was also an avid line dancer.

Fran helped everyone and always went out of her way to drive people to stores and wherever they needed to go. She believed everyone deserved a hug, so she gave it to them.

Her sons Richard (Patty) Stratton of Lacey, Wash., Larry (Trisha) Stratton of Ocean Park, Wash., and John (Pat) Stratton of Summerville, N.C.; 12 grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren survive her. (02/25/07)
