Charles Dupre

Charles Dupre, 66, died June 1, 2007, from complications of throat cancer at Spring Valley Hospital in Las Vegas.

He was born Dec. 4, 1940, in Worcester, Mass., the only son of Paul Dupre and Gertrude Monty. He was a direct descendent of one of the founding members of the Society of the Cincinnati and a member of the Sons of the American Revolution.

Charles spent his formative years in Rhode Island, where he attended Providence College. He received his bachelor of science in accounting in 1962 and a juris doctorate in 1975 from Boston College.

He was also a graduate of the Army War College in Carlisle, Pa. During his 33 years of both active and non-active duty, he served his country in many ways, from his early years as a judge advocate general corps attorney in Germany for four years, to battalion commander of the 243rd MP headquarters in Warwick, R.I., to his most recent post as the director of logistics during Desert Storm, also in Rhode Island.

When the Mali government asked the United States for assistance on how to become a democracy, the U.S. appointed an attache to Charles, where he then transcribed and delivered this speech in French. During his stay, he was a guest of the U.S. ambassador to Mali. Among his many decorations, awards and citations was the Bronze Star.

Retirement was not a word in his vocabulary. When he and his wife Cathy moved to Pahrump four years ago, he was asked by former Nye County Commissioner Patricia Cox to apply for a seat on the Pahrump Valley Regional Planning Commission, to which he was unanimously appointed.

Through his hard work and dedication, he was once again unanimously appointed by his peers as the chairman of the PRPC in 2006, a position he embraced. Martha Bellis

Martha Bellis passed away June 22, 2007, in Las Vegas after a long battle with cancer. She was preceded in death by her husband, Curt Bellis. She was born in Cleveland, Ohio, Nov. 12, 1945.

Martha was an important figure in Pahrump since 1976, when she moved here with her husband Curt and four sons. Martha and Curt immediately took to Pahrump and became an integral part of the community. Knowing the shortage of deputy sheriffs in Nye County, Curt was an important part in starting the Nye County Sheriff Reserve program and volunteered over 17,000 hours to help better the community.

Martha was quick to follow in her husband's footsteps and became a deputy-dispatcher for the Nye County Sheriff's Office. Aside from doing her normal dispatcher duties, Martha always made an effort to help the disadvantaged. Her motherly instinct frequently got the better of her and she was known to sign out people in jail on Thanksgiving and Christmas to take them to her home. She always said that nobody should ever have to spend the holidays in jail, and she meant it.

Martha also had a reputation for bringing in scores of destitute and needy families into her home and her heart. After years of helping so many families, the state of Nevada asked the Bellises to become foster parents so that they could be licensed to help with the growing foster care problem. Over the years they took in 80 foster children, some for a few months, but others until they became adults.

The foster children that Martha and Curt raised were given a second chance and with their help eventually became everything from a world-class bodybuilder to a bank manager; from business owners and homemakers to non-profit executives and many other successful members of the community.

Martha is survived by her four sons, Curtis, Bob, Scott, Casey; daughter Lura Bandazian; and grandchildren Dustin, Amber, Jonathan, Deven, Michael, Trent, and Chase.
