Nicolas Roa Archuleta

Nicolas Roa Archuleta (Nick) was born in Owyhee, Nev., on Feb. 4, 1943, to Nicolas Archuleta and Rita Roa Archuleta. He spent his childhood in Owyhee. Though an only surviving child (his little brother, Pedro, died in infancy), he had the companionship of a large extended family. He and his adventurous cousins enjoyed mountain climbing, horseback riding and sports activities.

Though he had the companionship of his extended family, life was difficult. His father, who made his living as a cowboy, became blind after three different accidents involving horses. Nick spent a lot of time helping both his father and mother.

Nick enjoyed his school days. In high school, he participated in track, football and basketball. He graduated from the Owyhee High School in 1961. Soon after, he enlisted in the U.S. Air Force. He was stationed at Indian Springs Air Force Base, Nevada, and was commissioned to aircraft crash rescue as a firefighter.

He married Dolly Torrance in 1965. After being discharged from the Air Force, they moved to Burbank, Calif., and he took a job as fire captain with Lockheed Aircraft Corp.

After receiving a degree in agricultural science, Nick and Dolly moved to Owyhee in 1974. He took a position at the Owyhee Schools as a high school agriculture teacher.

He started a farming operation, something that he had always wanted to do. They raised alfalfa hay which was trucked to purebred cow producers in Idaho, Oregon and Nevada. They were blessed with a daughter, Jessica, in 1981. In 1983, they were blessed with a son, Joshua (Jay). To their great sorrow, Jay passed away in 1996.

Nick transferred to Elko Junior High School shortly thereafter. He received concern and encouragement, and soon felt at home at EJHS.

In December 2000, a granddaughter, Abaya was born. She brightened his life. After joy can come sorrow. Nick passed away June 10 at Salt Lake City, Utah. He will, of course, be greatly missed by his family. But he will also be missed by the staff and students at EJHS. He touched the lives of many students and staff members, just as they touched his.

Funeral services will be held Monday, June 14, in Owyhee, Nev., at the Human Development Center at 1 p.m. Elko time (2 p.m. Owyhee time).

Visitation is to be held on Sunday, June 13, at the Presbyterian Church in Owyhee from 5 p.m. until 9 p.m.
