Marian Woods Hinkle
Marian Woods Hinkle, 88, died Oct. 9, 2004, at Northeastern Nevada Regional Hospital. She was born Aug. 15, 1916, in Helena, Mont. to Harry and Mary Woods. For many years, she worked doing seamstress and tailoring work.
Survivors include her twin sisters, Laura Swenson and Loren Brown of Apache Junction, Ariz.; daughter, Rebecca of Elko and caregiver, Sam Watson. She is also survived by several grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Louis; brothers, Walter, Carroll, Martin, Melvin, Arthur and Earl; sisters, Helen and Violet.
Cremation will be at Sunset Crematory under the direction of Burns Funeral Home. No services will be held.
Velma Lee Worline
Velma was born in Van, Texas, on Sept. 14, 1917. She made her journey to Heaven on Oct. 14, 2004. She was the middle child of seven children. Some of her fondest memories of Texas were of climbing the oil derricks.
Velma attended Central Christian College and received her teaching certificate. Her first job was in a one room school near Peabody, Kan., where she met Dale Worline and they married on Feb. 19, 1940. Velma taught school while Dale farmed in Kansas. They then moved to Colorado to farm and in the 1940s moved to California and managed a ranch. In 1954 they moved to Tuscarora and managed the Quarter Circle S Ranch for Dr. Lawrence Montgomery. When their daughter started high school, Velma moved to Elko and began working as a dental assistant for Dr. Tom Gallagher. She worked there 10 years while getting her children through high school. She then helped Dale start a feed and fertilizer business and then a real estate business where Dale worked until retirement. Retirement was filled with travel, good friends, and fun at every stop. Many of the last winters were spent in Yuma.
Velma was a longtime member of the Elko County Cowbelles.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Dale; a son, Stephen; brother, Joe Wallace; and sisters, Pearline and Johnnie.
Her survivors are her children, Fred and Joleen Worline, Karen and Ron Johnson, and Laurel Burtness; grandchildren, Tammy, Corby, Kay, Kim, Shaun, Monica, and Cortney; and seven great-grandchildren; sister, Patsy Varble; and brothers, Robert and Wesley Whitley.
Velma will be remembered as a loving, sweet mother and grandmother, and a wonderful friend. She will be greatly missed by all who knew her.
Services will be held Monday, Oct. 18, 2004, at 11 a.m. at Burns Funeral Home.
In lieu of flowers, donations could be made in her memory to an organization of the donors choice.
Elvabelle Mae Wood Braswell
Elvabelle Mae Wood Braswell returned home to the loving arms of our Savior and her family on Oct. 13, 2004, at the age of 87. She was born on May 10, 1917, in Ogden, Utah, to Hyrum Orlando Wood and Bessie Hamre. She married Claud Braswell on March 24, 1946 in Elko, Nev.
She is survived by her loving husband Claud; daughters, Karla (Jimmie) Welch and Claudia (Randy) Bowler; eight grandchildren; 18 great grandchildren; one great-great grandchild, with another on the way; two brothers; and one sister. She is preceded in death by her parents and four brothers.
Funeral services will be held Tuesday, Oct. 19, 2004, at 2 p.m., Veyo LDS Ward Chapel, 176 E. Center St., Veyo, Utah. There will be a viewing Monday, Oct. 18, 6-8 p.m., Metcalf Mortuary, 300 W. St. George Blvd., St. George, UT and again on Tuesday, 12:30-1:40 p.m., prior to the services at the Veyo Chapel. Interment will be in the Veyo City Cemetery under the direction of Metcalf Mortuary (435) 673-4221.
Barbara Carole Brown
Sept. 13, 1939 to Oct. 17, 2004
Barbara Carole Rackard Brown went home to be with her Lord and Savior on Oct. 17, 2004. She was the oldest of five children born to Mildred Bernice and Henry Fletcher Rackard Sr. in Register, Georgia. In 1953, she and 3 siblings went to live at the Connie Maxwell Childrens home in Greenwood, South Carolina where she acquired her strong Christian faith and values. Upon graduating from high school she moved to Augusta, Georgia where she eventually met and married her husband George Brown on Nov. 5, 1963.
In 1975, they moved to Elko, Nev. Barbara began working later that year as a cashier in the Commercial Hotel Coffee Shop, a position she held for 27 years until her retirement in Jan. 2003. She touched many lives, made numerous lasting friendships and truly made an impressionable mark on everyone she met.
She enjoyed fishing and camping with her husband, but her main passion was tending her flower gardens, especially her roses. She enjoyed attending her grandchildren's activities through the years and loved cooking and baking for her family. She has devoted her retirement years to caring for her husband and pet Maltese, Beethoven.
Her parents; a sister, Henry Jean Rackard; and a brother, Henry Fletcher Rackard Jr. preceded her in death. She is survived by her husband George Brown; children: Mary Frances Fellers, Peoria Az., Phillip Brown (Maureen), Elko, Nev., Scott Randall Brown (Sherri) Elko, Nev.; sister Maydene Willard (Andrew), Harlem, Georgia.; brother Milton Rackard, Sitka, Ak.; dear and special friend Georgeann and Jerry Dalton; grandchildren, Gary, John, Janice, Tammy (Steve), Korin (David), Cora, Garrett, Ashley, Nathan, Shawn, Heather, Sydni, Jerrica, Cody and 9 great-grandchildren.
She will be remembered as a loving wife, mother, grandmother, sister and wonderful friend and will be greatly missed.
Services will be held at the Calvary Baptist Church, Elko, Nev. at 10 a.m. Wednesday, Oct. 20 with interment to follow at the Elko City Cemetery.
A public visitation will be held on Tuesday, Oct. 19, 2004, from 6 p.m. until 8 p.m. at Burns Funeral Home Chapel.
Janet Rae Williams
Miss Williams was born in Reno, Nev. on Nov. 27, 1957. She passed away at home on Oct. 17, 2004, after a brief illness. She was with family members at the time of her death.
Miss Williams attended and graduated from Elko High School. She worked for the Elko office of the BLM, before going blind. Janet then attended the School for the Blind in Albany, Calif. Afterwards, she attended Great Basin College graduating magna cum laude with an Associates of Arts Degree in 1991. Janet was a member of the National Federation of the Blind and had attended national conventions in Chicago and New Orleans.
Janet endured, with courage, numerous medical problems throughout her life. As a child, Janet had juvenile diabetes. Later in life she lost her eyesight to this disease. In 1993, Janet received a kidney/pancreas transplant. Janet quickly lost the pancreas, and received another pancreas shortly thereafter, which functioned until her death. Eventually, Janet suffered rejection of the kidney, undergoing dialysis in Toole, Utah for eight months. In 1998, Janet received a kidney donated by her fiance, Kenneth DeHaas. In 2001, Janet underwent surgery for bladder cancer.
Janet was a source of joy and inspiration to all who knew her. One of her greatest joys was being with children. She would play for hours with any and all children, bringing joy and happiness into their lives. Fortunately, Janet had a large family in Elko with many young children for her to love.
Miss Williams was preceded in death by her father, Charlie Leroy Williams, in 2000.
Janet is survived by her mother, Christine Mary Williams; brothers Clark and Don (Pam) Williams; sisters Darlene (Dan) Sabla and Cindy Williams; her great-aunt Lapriel Corone; numerous great nieces, great nephews and a great -great-niece (all of Elko, Nev.); her aunt Rosie O'Neill (Fremont, Ca); her aunt Christel Chrismer (Carson City, Nev.). in addition to a large number of cousins including Paula Keyes (Winnemucca, Nev.).
