Beryl Jean Watts Neff

Beryl Jean Watts Neff, 89, passed away peacefully on Oct. 18, 2004, at her home in Ruby Valley of natural causes. Beryl was born to William Eugene Watts and Ethel Gertrude Park Watts in Murray, Utah, on Aug. 28, 1915, the eighth of eleven children. She graduated from Murray High School and the University of Utah. She then taught at Murray High School. She entered into a long distance courtship with Emerson Chamberlain Neff, a cowboy, and on June 3, 1938, they were married in the Salt Lake LDS Temple. They began their married lives in a homesteader's cabin on the ranch in Ruby Valley, Nev., and endured many trials, hardships, and joys in the following years. They built a larger home which burned to the ground in 1949, taking all their earthly possessions. They then built a log home on the same site which Beryl dearly loved. Emerson died in 1983, and Beryl continued to live in the home the remainder of her life. Through the years, the home has become a family gathering place.

Emerson and Beryl had seven children, five boys and two girls. Besides raising her seven children, she cooked for hay crews, raised a big garden, and had a beautiful yard. Beryl gave many years of service to the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and influenced many people. She served in many positions in both stake and branch organizations, but teaching was always her greatest pleasure.

She returned to teaching when her youngest son entered high school, and taught at the Ruby Valley School until she retired in 1980. Following her official retirement, she organized and taught a neighborhood kindergarten on the ranch. She spoke of this as "one of the most rewarding experiences of her life." Her former students still talk of her fondly. Anyone who came in contact with her never forgot her. She is remembered for her loving, giving heart, and she always thought of others before herself. In her later years, as her health declined, she was confined to a wheelchair. She remained positive, kept attending church, never forgot anyone's birthday or anniversary, and always retained her keen sense of humor.

Until her recent illness, she was active in her community. She was a member of the Ruby Valley Friendship Club and helped publish a book, "Through The Years with the Ruby Valley News." She always wrote poetry and stories. She was a founding member of the Camp Ruby Chapter of The Daughters of the Utah Pioneers. She was active in the Farm Bureau, the Republican Party, and was a charter member of the Elko County Cowbelles, where she was named "Mother of the Year" in 1989.

Beryl was an avid fan of BYU basketball and football, an interest she developed while her brother, Stan Watts, coached basketball at BYU. She enjoyed attending church basketball in Elko and Wells, supporting the Ruby Valley Branch teams. She will be remembered as the "Matriarch" of the Ruby Valley Branch of the LDS Church, as well as the beloved matriarch of the growing Neff Family. She is loved and revered by all of her descendants.

She is survived by her five sons and daughters-in-law, David and Lyn, John and Kathy, Paul and Judy, Steve and Sandy, Wendell and Chris, all of Ruby Valley; and her two daughters and sons in law, Jeanne and Mark Sampson of Ruby Valley, Janet and Butch Wendlandt of Elko. She is also survived by one brother, Maurice L. Watts, of St. George, Utah; and by her 35 grandchildren; and 30 great-grandchildren. They will miss their dear "Grandma Great."

She was preceded in death by her husband, Emerson; nine of her brothers and sisters, including her dear sister June, and two granddaughters, Katie and Caralyn Neff.

Funeral services will be held on Monday, Oct. 25, 2004, at 11 a.m. at the Ruby Valley LDS Church. A visitation will be held on Sunday, Oct. 24, from 5 to 6:30 p.m. at Burns Funeral Home and on Monday from 9:30 to 10:45 a.m. prior to the service. Interment will be in the Ruby Valley Cemetery. In her memory, donations may be made to either the LDS Church Perpetual Education Fund, or the Ruby Valley Cemetery Fund, c/o LDS Ruby Valley Branch HC 60, P.O. Box 615, Ruby Valley, NV 89833.

She was preceded in death by her husband of nearly 50 years, James William Cottom Sr. and brother, John Tipton Alford Jr. She is greatly missed by her three children, James William Cottom Jr. of Novato, Calif., Dorothy Anne Fisher of Carthage, Mo., and Elizabeth Lucile Weil of Auburn, Calif.; nine grandchildren, Dawnell, Daniel, Amy, Justin, James, III (Jamie), Dennis, Darin, Diana, Deborah, and twelve great-grandchildren, Timothy, Tasha, Alexander, Jaimee, Tara, Kortney, Darin, Brittany, Colton, Sydney, Savanna, and Aubrianna. She is also survived by three sisters, Lucile McKee, Margaret Hendricks, and Jean Miller and their wonderful families.

Born in Emporia, Kan., her family moved to Fort Smith, Ark., when she was five where she lived until her marriage to James during World War II. Since then, Carlin had been her home until she moved to Reno for health reasons. She was a member of the Methodist Church, Carlin Chapter of the Rebekah Lodge and a reporter of the Carlin news for the Elko Daily Free Press for four years.

Until several years ago, at the onset of Alzheimer's disease, she enjoyed singing, visiting with friends and family, cooking, sewing and needlework, taking photographs and reading.

A celebration of Ethel's life will be held at Burns Funeral Home Chapel on Monday, Oct. 25, at 4 p.m. In lieu of flowers, donations to the Alzheimer's Association, P.O. Box 309, Mountain View, CA 94042, are preferred.
