Joe Onandia

Joe Onandia died Oct. 10, 2004, at Northeastern Nevada Regional Hospital He was born July 14, 1918, in Price, Utah, to Eulogia and Asuncion Onandia. He was preceded in death by three sisters, Pilar and Victoria Onandia, and Anita Saguar, and one brother, Peter Onandia. Surviving him are one niece, Gloria Flores and two nephews, Pablo and Luis Saguar. He also has cousins living in Elko and Lamoille, Pete Laucirica, Mary Aguirre, Fermina Sustacha, Joe Sustacha and Jess Sustacha.

Joe worked for many years on ranches around Elko.

Funeral services are scheduled for Monday, Oct. 25, 2004, at 11 a.m. at Burns Funeral Home Chapel. Deacon Craig LaGier of St. Joseph's Catholic Church officiating. Burial will be in the Elko City Cemetery, Veterans Section.

Antoine (Tony) Primeaux

Antoine (Tony) Primeaux, a native of Elko County and retired Postmaster of Elko, died Oct. 20 after a long illness. He was 93 years old. He was born in Tuscarora on Jan. 25, 1911, and attended school there until his parents, the late Roy and Frances Primeaux, moved to Emigrant Pass and opened the Primeaux Station.

He attended high school in Carlin and later graduated from Elko High School in 1930. He graduated from the University of Nevada Reno in 1936 and subsequently worked for the university extension service at both Elko and Ely as an assistant county agent. He returned to Elko in 1943 and was employed by the Western Pacific Railroad until his appointment as postmaster in 1956. He retired from that position in 1973 and kept active with historical research and submissions to the local papers pertaining to early Nevada history. On graduation day 1936 he married Ellen Ernst of Fallon and remained with her until her death in January of this year.

In community affairs, Primeaux had been active in the Boy Scout program, serving as district chairman; and in the Little League baseball program, serving as president during the time the Elko Little League field was built in the city park. He served on the Elko General Hospital Board, a member of the Rotary Club, and the Gideons.

During his lifetime Tony and his wife of 68 years contributed more than 2,000 artifacts to the Northeastern Nevada Museum. He had been active in various organizations of the local Masonic Order, had held the post of Grand High Priest of the Grand Chapter of Royal Arch Masons of Nevada and the degree of Knight of York Cross of Honor. He was a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Elko at the time of his death.

Preceded in death by wife, Ellen; son, Antoine Ray; two brothers, Newman and Patrick. Tony is survived by two sons: Mike and his wife Betty of Midland, Texas, and Charles and his wife Connie of Elko; five grandchildren, Tony and Kellie Carson Primeaux, of Elko, Chris Primeaux and his wife Irma of Odessa, Texas, Michelle of Abilene, Texas, Keith and Kim Primeaux of Ford Hood, Texas, Jennifer Primeaux of Elko; and several nieces and nephews. He was also blessed with two grandchildren, Dariahn Reign Primeaux of Elko and Noah Ryan Primeaux, of Odessa, Texas.

A memorial service will be held at 2: p.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 26, 2004, at Burns Funeral Home with the Pastor Pat Mecham of the First Presbyterian Church of Elko officiating. Cremation will be at Sunset Crematory with inurnment at the Elko City Cemetery at a later date.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations to the Animal Relief Foundation of Elko, the Northeastern Nevada Museum, or the Terrace Senior Activities Program.

Margaret Kathryn Belken

Margaret Kathryn Belken passed away peacefully on Tuesday, Oct. 19, 2004, at the Northeastern Nevada Regional Hospital in Elko, Nev. She left this earth to be with her Lord at the age of 82. She was born Margaret Kathryn Cooper on Dec. 23, 1921, in Huntington, W.Va., to Harry and Lenora Cooper. Margaret grew up and went to school in Charleston, W. Va., before moving out west.

Margaret was a resident of the Reno/Sparks area since 1952, where she raised her three sons, Richard, William, and David.

She was preceded in death by her mother, Lenora, in 1960; her sister, Viola, in 1968; father, Harry, in 1974; and husband, Frank, in 2003.

Margaret moved to Elko to live with her son, David, and his wife, Katherine, after the death of her husband.

She is survived by her brother, Leon, of Lucerne Valley, Calif.; sister, Janet Harlow, of Chandler, Ariz.; sons, Richard Altman, and wife, Alice, of Las Vegas, William Easter and wife, Susan, of La Center, Wash., and David Altman and wife, Katherine, of Elko; niece, Judy Merwin, and husband, Bob, also of Elko, in addition to many other nieces, nephews, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Visitation for Margaret is scheduled for Tuesday, Oct. 26, from 1-8 p.m. and Wednesday, Oct. 27, from 9 a.m.-noon, both at Walton's Sierra Chapel, 875 West Second St., Reno, Nev. A funeral service is set for Wednesday, Oct. 27, at 2 p.m., also at the Walton Sierra Chapel. Interment will follow at Mountain View Cemetery in Reno. Officiating will be Pastors Franz and Karyn Sotomayer of River of Life International Church, Elko, Nev.

Sylvia Leialoha Jackson

Sylvia Leialoha Jackson, 61, of Crescent Valley, Nev., passed away on Oct. 24, 2004, after a long battle with cancer. She was born in Honolulu, Hawaii, in 1943.

She is survived by husband, Kevin; mother, Peggy Hao'Ross, of Hawaii; daughters, Judi Dimon, Jennifer Van Valkenberg; and son, David Imgard; four grandchildren; brothers, Robert Baptiste of Honolulu, Fredrick Ross of Klammath Falls, Ore., Jack Ross of Hawaii; and sisters, Amy Levi of Gresham, Ore., Peggy McCalmant of Naples, Idaho, and May Lani Ross of Hawaii.

Sylvia grew up in Cascade and McCall, Idaho. She graduated from St. Gertrude's Academy High School in Cottonwood, Idaho. She attended Boise Junior College and completed one year of secretarial sciences. She attended Northern Nevada Community College, Elko, Nev. From 1994-present, Sylvia was an EMT-D operations officer and volunteer EMS in Eureka County and Crescent Valley.

Memorial services will be held on Tuesday, Oct. 26, 2004, at 1 p.m. at the Jehovah Witness Kingdom Hall, 1545 Indian View Heights Drive, Elko, Nev. Private interment services will be held.

Nelda Marie Lancaster Glaser

Oct. 17, 1922 - Oct. 22, 2004

Nelda Marie Lancaster Glaser was born in Hugo, Okla., to Charles Barr Lancaster and Nelda Saake Lancaster. The family moved to Oklahoma City when her father began working for the IRS. She graduated from Classen High School third in her class of 637. Admired for her intellect, she was secretary to the president of Oklahoma State University where she earned her degree in English and met her husband, Norman Dale Glaser, a third generation Nevada rancher. They were married on Aug. 7, 1943. World War II was in full swing, and they could not return to the family ranch until 1946 while Mr. Glaser served in the U.S. Navy as a lieutenant JG.

Mrs. Glaser is best remembered as the U.S. Postmaster at Halleck, Nev., a position she held for 27 years. She was the editor of the Silver State Postmaster, a publication for Nevada postal workers that won many national awards and earned her numerous trips to Washington, D.C. She was secretary of the Elko County Farm Bureau, president of the American Association of University Women, president of the Elko Hospital Auxiliary, and state president of the Nevada Association of Hospital Auxiliaries. Deeply religious, she was a lifelong member of the Presbyterian Church.

From 1960 to 1984 Norman Glaser served the state of Nevada as an assemblyman and state senator. As the wife of a politician, Mrs. Glaser was a guiding influence in his political career. She entertained many government officials and was an ardent supporter of the Democratic Party.

Mrs. Glaser played the violin and the piano and was a great supporter of the arts. She enjoyed many trips throughout the world including a journey to Soviet Russia before the fall of communism. Many will remember her as one of Elko's most gracious and welcoming hostesses who loved to bake pecan pies for her guests. Always a lady with a knack for saying the right thing and urging everyone to do their best until they were proud of the results, she will be greatly missed by her family and friends.

Mrs. Glaser is survived by her sons, Steven Dale Glaser, D.D.S., of Elko and Brent Lancaster Glaser, D.V.M, of Elko; daughter, Sharon Glaser Bell of Las Vegas; four grandchildren, Dr. Brian Dale Glaser and Dr. Trent Norman Glaser both of Dallas, Texas, Vance Glaser of Las Vegas, Carolyn Glaser Haradin of Salt Lake City; and five great-grandchildren, Deidra Marie Glaser of Las Vegas, Luke, Lexie, Maya, and Aiden Lancaster Glaser of Texas.

In her memory, contributions are suggested to the Northeastern Nevada Museum, 1515 Idaho St. or Great Basin College, 1500 College Parkway.

Services are scheduled for 11 a.m., Wednesday at the Presbyterian Church in Elko.
