Caesar John Lipparelli

March 20, 1918 - Dec. 13, 2004

Caesar Lipparelli, a lifelong resident of Elko, passed away at home Sunday of natural causes. He was the second son of Sostenio and Argentina Lipparelli. His parents immigrated from Italy around 1910.

During World War II, he was involved in the assault and capture of Iwo Jima and numerous other islands while serving with the Fourth Marine Division, Pacific Theater of Operations.

During the early '50s, he was the owner of the Spur Drive-In in Elko. In the '60s, he was Elko County's chief juvenile probation officer, and during the '70s, he was the national purchasing director for Arctic Circle, Inc.

In retirement, his favorite pastimes were watching "The Price is Right" and enjoying coffee and conversation with his nephews and friends at the Coffee Mug.

He is survived by Welcome, his wife of 54 years; his children: Sherry Sutton, Mukeltio, Wash.; Kenneth (Cynthia) Lipparelli, Issaquah, Wash.; Lonna Lipparelli, Elko; Larry (Danel) Lipparelli, Sparks; Mike (Julie) Lipparelli, Yorktown, Va; Nikki (Brett) Henderson, Boise, Idaho; Tamea (Nick) Knight, Elko; 20 grandchildren, several great-grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews. He is also survived by his sister, Paulina Madigan of Sparks.

He was preceded in death by two brothers, Adolph and Lao Lipparelli, and two sisters, Dora Wood and Delia Smith.

A funeral liturgy and a celebration of his life will be held Friday at 2 p.m., St. Joseph's Catholic Church, 990 Highland Drive, Elko.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to Horizon Hospice of Elko.

Ruth Gladys Busch Buckingham

On Dec. 9, 2004, Ruth Buckingham peacefully departed this realm for places beyond my wildest imagination. She died at the home of her daughter, Amy, after a long bout with Alzheimers.

Behind, she leaves a son, William Winants Buckingham, and his wife, Julie, of Jacksonville, Fla.; and a daughter, Amy Buckingham-Flammang, and her husband, John, of Spring Creek; a sister, Marjorie Field, of Mound City, Mo.; a brother, Francis John Busch, of Cole Camp, Mo.; her American Field Service daughter, Miho Kawi, in Tokyo; four grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews who all loved and adored this most remarkable woman.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Lola May Farmer and Louis Edward Busch, of Oregon, Mo.; a daughter, Carolyn Schwarz, and five brothers from various parts of the country.

Ruth was born in Syracuse, Neb., in 1913, and graduated from Belleview High in Mound City, Mo., in 1931. She received her nursing degree from General Hospital in Kansas City, where she met and married her husband, Dr. W.W. Buckingham, a thoracic surgeon.

She reared her children in the Kansas City area, and was later nominated for Missouri Mother of the Year. She was an active member of the Elizabeth Benton chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution in Kansas City, and the William White chapter in Mound City.

Her summers were spent in Minnesota where she cared for, not only her own children, but also her husband's parents and grandmother, as well as other family members who could spend time at the family cottage on a lake near Dent, Minn.

After her children flew the coop, she plunged into volunteer work, at first driving cancer patients, visiting the sick and elderly, and knitting toys for the Mercy Hospital for Children. She worked in soup kitchens, and on Jimmy Carter's housing construction projects in the Kansas City area. For over 10 years she assisted at the Children's Center for the Visually Impaired, first as a driver and later in the classroom. Ruth gave and gave with never any thought of what she would get in return.

A kind word, a beautiful smile, love of life, and a true caring for others is how she will be remembered. Her passing is not only a loss to those who knew and loved her, but also to those never had the privilege to have met her and had her change and influence their lives. She influenced the lives of all her children, relatives, and those who ever had the opportunity to have known this angel who was an angel from the day she was born.

God speed, my darling girl. Thank you again for all you have given us, and you will live on in our hearts forever.

Rakestraw, age 12, and Dylan M. Sampley, age 1, and two daughters, Bethany J. Rakestraw, age 7, and Lori A. Rakestraw, age 4, all of Elko.
