Loretta Belle Flowers
Loretta Belle Flowers passed away Jan. 15, 2007. She has been a resident of Elko for 33 years. Born in Tama, Iowa, Sept. 14, 1920, Loretta forged a personality based on strength and love. She was the middle-born of five children born to Bertha and Ned Norris.
She married Orla O. Flowers Sr. in October of 1940. Together they raised a family of six sons and three daughters. Her life from that moment became centered on her children and family. Throughout her time, joy, love and moments of caring were shared with family; friends, near and far; 24 grandchildren; 40 great-grandchildren; and five great-great-grandchildren. Other loves in her life were birds, flowers and playing the harmonica. A special song she enjoyed playing was “There’s no place like home.”
To her family and friends, a sense of humor defined an outlook that was characterized by a playful wit. Loretta would pass on to all, “It’s been a good ride” and “I did it my way” as defining elements of her journey through this life. Lastly she would remind all those who will miss her “No tears, only laughter.”
Her children who survive her are Jerry Flowers of Sacramento, Calif.; Orla Flowers Jr., of Elko, Nev.; John Flowers of Fresno, Calif.; Mike Flowers of Elko, Nev.; Pat Flowers of Elko, Nev.; Howard Flowers of Elko, Nev.; Janet Schnieder of Santa Rosa, Calif.; Judy Bull of Meridian, Idaho; and Ellen Bird of Elko, Nev.
Services will be held at Burns Funeral home on Saturday, Jan. 20, 2007, at 2 p.m. Pastor John Kraintz of the Elko Assembly of God Church will officiate. There will be a reception following the service at the Basque Center, 1601 Flag View Drive, Elko, Nev. Cremation was at Sunset Crematory in Elko, Nev., under the direction of Burns Funeral Home. Burial will be in Burns Memorial Gardens at a later date.
Richard E. Jones
Richard E. Jones passed away Saturday, April 8, 2006, at the Battle Mountain Hospital, after a lengthy illness.
He is survived by a daughter, Tina Jones, and grandson, Kristofer Jones; also brothers, Coke and Leslie Jones, of Elko and Judy Jones of Mesquite.
Mario (Mars) Gallegos
November 23, 1962 - March 8, 2005
Mars, our brother and friend, went on his way in the presence of his loving family at home in Wells Tuesday night.
His smile, charm and laughter will stay in our hearts forever. Mars loved family, friends and people for who they truly are. Mars was known for loving open space and being a free spirit. He loved all of the kids and knew they would fill spot.
Mario was preceded in death by his mother, "Margie," and survived by his father, Chris Gallegos; sisters, Christine and Mallissa; brothers, Anthony, Videl, Bub, and Tone. He is also survived by uncles, aunts, nieces, nephews and Ma Red.
The family would like to express its deepest gratitude to the BMT Clinic and Hospital for the excellent care Mario received. Also a special thanks to the city of Willard for the love and respect shown to our brother Mario; he greatly appreciate it. Thank you.
The Rosary will be recited at St. Thomas Aquinas Catholic Church in Wells at 7 p.m. on Friday, March 11.
Memorial services will be held Saturday, March 12, 2005, at 11 a.m. at St. Thomas Aquinas Catholic Church.
Earthel Franklin Smith
Earthel Franklin Smith passed away Feb. 11, 2005, in Reno at the age of 71. Earthel was born December 2, 1933, to Earthel and Bessie Smith in St. Louis, Mo. At the age of 17 he joined the United States Air Force. In 1952 he was transferred to St. Johns, Canada. In 1959 he met a young lady. Within six weeks they were married.
Earthel and Betty returned to the United States in 1960. They soon had three daughters. In August of 1964 Earthel and his family moved to the Air Force Base at Biloxi, Miss.
Shortly after their arrival, Betty passed away at the age of 24, a few month s after their last daughter was born. Earthel was so much in love with Betty that he never remarried. In 1974 Earthel and his three daughters moved back to Reno. From 1989 to 2005, Earthel resided with his daughter Margaret, son-in-Law Robert and grandson in Washoe Valley and Spring Creek until his passing.
He is preceded in death by his loving wife, Betty, and his mother and father. He is survived by daughters, Debbie Crank (Dennis) of Dayton; Deanna Saunders of Sparks; and Margaret Ray (Robert) of Spring Creek; son-in-law, Mark Saunders of Sun Valley; grandchildren, Nicholas Skaggs, Lindsey Cross and Niki Freeman of Carson City, Brandon Saunders of Sun Valley, Alanna and Jason Crank of Dayton, Tyler and Justin Ray of Spring Creek; great-grandchildren (his babies), Dillon Skaggs and Destiny and Aiden Freeman, all of Carson City; and longtime friend, Jim McKernan and family of Reno.
Cremation will be conducted by Mountain View Mortuary. A memorial service for Earthel is pending.
Eva M. Nicholson
Longtime Lamoille resident Eva M. Nicholson unexpectedly passed away in Reno at Washoe Medical Center on Sunday, Feb. 13, 2005, at 10:20 p.m. after suffering heart failure, stroke and complications from diabetes. Daughter Carol remained at her mother's hospital bedside. Eva was only 62 years young.
Eva is survived by her younger sister, Judy, who resides in Texas; one grandson, Jonathan age eight and one-half; her daughter, Carol, who resides in Reno; Carol' s father, Joe Fitzgerald, of Utah; and her lifetime partner of over 35 years, Joe Sustacha, of Lamoille.
Memorial Services are scheduled for Friday, Feb. 25, 2005, beginning at 5:30 p.m. at the Little Church of the Crossroads in Lamoille. All who were fortunate enough to know my mother are welcome and encouraged to join us in celebrating her life.

Wanda B. Chiara
Wanda B. Chiara died March 5, 2005, at her residence in Ontario, Ore. She was 79. Wanda was born to Lloyd and Omie Faye Bobo on Jan. 25, 1926, in Rome, Texas. She attended school in Fort Worth, Texas.
Wanda moved to North Battle Mountain while working as a telegraph operator for Union Pacific Railroad and married Robert E. (Bob) Chiara Nov. 24, 1946, in Battle Mountain. After they were married, they bought and moved to the Chiara Ranch. While ranching, she also worked at the Battle Mountain General Hospital as a cook, then chief dietitian and head of the kitchen, retiring after 20 years in 1986. After 45 years of ranching, they retired and moved near Battle Mountain. They moved to Ontario, Ore., in September of 2001 to be close to family.
She was preceded in death by her husband; parents; sisters, Juanita Chapman, Lavada Shaw and Ovella and Dorothy Bobo. She is survived by her son, Louis Chiara (wife Mary) of Ontario, Ore., daughter, Jo Fay Chiara (husband Duane Urrutia) of Battle Mountain; five grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be at Battle Mountain First Baptist Church Thursday, March 10, 2005, at 10 a.m. Pastor Richard Chappell will officiate. Burial will be at the Battle Mountain Cemetery.
