John Gabriel Hydrick

Funeral services will be today, May 24, 1 p.m., for John Gabriel Hydrick, who died May 19, 2000. He was 44.

Mr. Hydrick was born Feb. 23, 1956, in San Diego, Calif.

He was a 34-year resident of Tahoe, loved the outdoors and shared all of his loves with his daughters, Heidi and Brittany, and later, his wife Barbara and step-children Sam and Julia.

At the age of 16, he was an accomplished pilot, rock climber, hang glider pilot, and scuba diver. He dove all over the United States, Australia and the Red, Japan, and China Seas. But his passion was whitewater kayaking and rafting. He kayaked most of the Class V rivers in the United States. To relax, he sailed Tahoe and San Francisco Bay.

Mr. Hydrick graduated from South Tahoe High School in 1974. In 1977-78, he served a two-year mission to Korea and Little Korea in Chicago for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. He received a bachelor of arts degree in international business from Brigham Young University, after which he served an internship with the United State Department of State, Korea Office, translating top-secret documents. He was heavily recruited by the FBI, CIA, and NSA, but chose to work in the private sector and live in the West.

He was a master cabinet-maker and carpenter. He served as a Scoutmaster in the Boy Scouts of America in Carson City for seven years and taught many young men the skills. He was fluent in Korean and Japanese and worked for Bently Nevada Corp., Minden, as manager of foreign languages, where he supervised development, translation and production of corporate literature. His job assignments took him all over the world, and his family often went with him.

He is survived by his wife, Barbara Jean Hydrick; daughters, Heidi and Brittany Hydrick, stepson, Samuel Sourikoff, stepdaughter, Julia Sourikoff; (he was predeceased by wife Sharon Elizabeth Wood Hydrick); mother, June Carsten and father Plymton Hydrick; brothers, Rick, Carter, George and Don; sisters, Michaell Allen, Ora Smith, Christi Hydrick; grandmother, Marie Whitehurst; various aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Saints chapel, corner of Spruce and Herbert Avenues, South Lake Tahoe, followed by a Graveside service at Happy Homestead Cemetery.

Ordie Ladew Lee, Sr.

Ordie Ladew Lee, Sr., died Thursday, May 23, 2002, at the Life Care Center in Reno. He was 89.

Mr. Lee was born in Nebraska on April 26, 1913, to William Quit and Ina Lee.

He worked for Isabell Construction and later for Kennecott Copper as a mechanic at the Lonetree Shops before he retired.

Mr. Lee is survived by four sons: Ordie (Jean) Lee, Jr., of Ruth, Ivan (Mary Lou) Lee of Ely, Don (Nethella) Lee of Eureka, Robert (Darlene) Lee of Gram, Wash.; a daughter, Crystal Baker of Ely; eight grandchildren; and 36 great grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers: Ivan, William and Charles; a sister, Florence; his wife of 65 years Mae Elizabeth Lee; son, Donnie Lee; and grandsons: Adam Lee, Sherman Lee and Kenny Lee.

At his request, no services are to be conducted before his inurnment.

Roger W. Ashby

Services for Roger W. Ashby of Ely were scheduled for Friday, Oct. 4, 2002, following a 12:30 p.m. visitation at the Mountain Vista Chapel.

Mr. Ashby was born in Delta, Utah, on June 16, 1936, to Clifford and Lucille Ashby. He married Virginia S. Burt in Fillmore, Utah, on Nov. 12, 1955.

He had lived in this area for 48 years.

A 30-year veteran of Kennecott Copper, Mr. Ashby also worked 12 1/2 years for Placer Dome.

His passtimes included camping, four-wheeling, fishing and rock hunting.

Mr. Ashby is survived by his wife; three sons: Kenneth (Susan), Bryce (Candi) and Darren ( Debbie); and five grandchildren: Amy, Wade, Brennan, Tyler and Carley Ashby. He also is survived by four brothers: Ross (Alice) of Vermont, Wilford (Ella) of Ely, Louis (Colleen) of Ely and Bob (Joyce) of Delta; two sisters: Geavene (Merle) Oliver of Arizona and LaVonne (Bud) Palmer of Utah.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Burial is to be held in the Ely City Cemetery. The list of pallbearers includes: Roger Vandenberghe, Jay Terry, Carl Stork, Gary North, Dee Wadsworth and Lyle Norcross. Honorary pallbearers are to be his brothers and grandsons and brothers in law: Larry Erickson, Gary Coburn, Richard Burt and Jim Burt.

Stella Schroeder

Stella Schroeder of McGill died Monday, March 31, 2003, at the White Pine Care Center in Ely. She was 93.

Born Oct. 22, 1904, in Stockton, Utah, she was the daughter of John and Hannah (Reese) Welde. The family moved to McGill in 1908.

She was graduated from White Pine County High School in 1922. She also was a 1926 graduate of the Holy Cross Hospital School of Nursing in Salt Lake City.

She worked for 29 years as the school nurse at McGill Grade School, and later served other rural schools in the county.

In her early years as a nurse she worked in hospitals and providing special care nursing.

She was a member of St. Michael's Catholic Church in McGill. She and her sisters were the first babies to be baptized at the church. She was president of the St. Cecilia's Altar Society in McGill for 26 years.

Mrs. Schroeder was an RSVP volunteer at the McGill Senior Center and participated in all of the center's activities, especially Bingo. She also belonged to the McGill Golden Age Club and the Retired Public Employees of Nevada.

She enjoyed hiking, walking, being in the mountains, picnics, camping and gardening.

Survivors include two daughters: Anne Schroeder of McGill and Pauline (Albert) Samper of Elko; two sons: John (Libby) Schroeder of Mooresville, N.C., and William (Yolanda) Schroeder of Las Cruses, N.M.; 16 grandchildren; 26 great grandchildren; and one great, great grandchild.

She also is survived by two sisters: Becky Lyon of Watsonville, Calif., and Madelyn Leonard of Cannon Beach, Ore.; as well as numerous nieces and nephews.

Mrs. Schroeder was preceded in death by her parents, husband Paul, grandson Bret Benson; three sisters: Marjorie Carlson, Anne Grier and Bessie McDaniel; and a brother, John Welde, who died as an infant.

A rosary service is scheduled Sunday, April 13, at 7:30 p.m. at St. Michael's. A memorial mass is scheduled at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Ely at 11 a.m., Monday, to be celebrated by Father Phil Audet.

The family suggests memorial donations be made to: Father Costigan Scholarship Fund, 514 Murry St., Ely, NV 89301.

Joe D. Mascarenas

Joe D. Mascarenas, 81, a resident of Ribera, N.M., died Tuesday at the Veterans Administration Hospital in Albuquerque following an extended illness.

He was born in Roy, N.M., on Dec. 10, 1920, to the late Demetrio and Rafaelita Maestas Mascarenas. He married Victoria Salazar in Raton, N.M. on Aug. 11, 1940, a union of 61 years. He was a World War II veteran, having served in the U.S. Army.

He worked as a driller for the Kennecott Copper Mining Company in Ruth, Nev., for 25 years. He and his wife had been residents of Ribera for the past 22 years. He was a lifetime member of the Disabled American Veterans and the Raton Council of the Knights of Columbus and was a cursillista, having lived in the cursillo at the San Jose Parish in Albuquerque. He was an avid deer hunter and sportsman.

He is survived by his wife of 61 years, Victoria of Ribera; one daughter, Gertrude Marie Sandoval and husband Eli of Silver City, N.M.; son Joseph David Mascarenas and wife Ginger of Reno, Nev.; three brothers, Paul Mascarenas and wife Mary of Reno, Demetrio Mascarenas and wife Margarita of Westminster, Colo., and Roger Mascarenas and wife Arvilla of Duckwater, Nev.; one sister, Ester Ford of Ruth; five grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.

Marco 'Buddy' David Jukich

Marco "Buddy" David Jukich of Ely died Friday, May 24, 2002. He was 70.

Mr. Jukich was born June 21, 1931, in Old Ruth to George and Mildred (Dragosavac) Jukich. He attended local schools and was graduated from White Pine County High School.

He was a lifelong resident of the area.

He married the former Nina Pavlakis in Ely on Feb. 2, 1980. She preceded him in death in April 1985.

He was a U.S. Air Force veteran. He owned and operated Bud Jukich Roofing & Siding.

He was a member of the Slav Club and hosted meetings of the Nevada Historical Society.

He was named the White Pine Centennial Man of the Year and was known for his barbecues. He also was an avid fisherman.

Survivors include his sister, Sylvia (Galen) Gregory of Carson City, and his brother, George (Edna Mae) Jukich of Twin Falls, Idaho. Survivors also include nieces: Reena (Steve) Dobrescu of Ely, Trudy (David) Erquiaga of Fallon, Lori (John) Head of Twin Falls, Tami Linnell of San Diego, Calif., and Cheryl (Scott) Mayne of Carson City.

Survivors also include grand nieces and nephews: Niko and Marco Dobrescu of Ely; Robert and Linnell Erquiaga of Fallon; and Alex and Lacy Head of Twin Falls. He also was preceded in death by Bob and Pat Linnell of Ely, his sister and brother-in-law.

A celebration of his life was scheduled for Saturday, June 1, at Bud's Patio, 2-6 p.m. Burial is to be held at a later date in the Ely City Cemetery.

Memorial donations in Mr. Jukich's name for the Ely Volunteer Fire Department are preferred.

Roberta Anderson Carter

Roberta Anderson Carter of Grantsville, Utah, died Saturday, Oct. 12, 2002, at her home. She was 80.

Mrs. Carter was born Oct. 31, 1921, in Huntington, Utah, to Soren and Margaret Anderson, one of 11 children.

She was a graduate of Utah State University.

She married Rex J. Carter on June 17, 1946. He preceded her in death.

Mrs. Carter taught home economics at White Pine County High School for 20 years, during which time she was honored repeatedly as "Teacher of the Year."

She had lived in Grantsville since 1981.

Mrs. Carter was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. She served in the Relief Society, Young Women's Program, Primary and worked in the Jordan River LDS Temple for 16 years.

She is survived by two sons: Robert Paul (Bonnie) Carter of West Jordan, Utah, and Bradley (Lori) Carter of Snohomish, Wash.; two daughters: Frances (Joe) Kennedy of Kerrville, Texas, and Margaret (T. Ryan) Hawkins of Bountiful, Utah; 22 grandchildren; and 19 great grandchildren. She also is survived by three sisters. A son, Rex J. Carter, Jr., preceded her in death.

Services were scheduled Tuesday, Oct. 14, in the Grantsville West Stake Center with burial following in the Grantsville Cemetery in Grantsville.

Lester R. Peilet

Lester R. Peilet died Jan. 8, 2000, at the University of Utah Medical Center in Salt Lake City. He was 82.

Mr. Peilet was born March 7, 1917, in Chicago, Ill., and was the son of Robert and Eve (Moshinsky) Peilet.

He was educated in Chicago and was an inventor of new products and methods. He was a resident of McGill since 1999.

Mr. Peilet was a first lieutenant in the U.S. Army, having served during World War II.

He enjoyed science, reading and world travel.

Mr. Peilet is survived by his sister, Bernice Humphries of Justin, Ill.

Graveside services are scheduled to be conducted Thursday, March 2, at 2 p.m. in the Ely Cemetery. Burial will also be at the Ely City Cemetery.

Officers of James Jewell Post 3547 Veterans of Foreign Wars are to officiate.
