Anna Garamendi Birch

Anna Garamendi Birch of Ely died Sunday, May 26, 2002, at her home. She was 76.

She was born in El Centro, Calif., on Oct. 18, 1925, to Sam and Maria Garamendi.

She was graduated from the University of Nevada-Reno with a master's degree in education. She taught school in Ely for 27 year.

After she retired she was a strong supporter of Great Basin College and helped people who wanted to learn to read and write English.

She was a member of Sacred Herat Catholic Church in Ely and the White Pine Historical Car Club.

Mrs. Birch is survived by her husband Lee; daughters: Carla (Larry) Sankovich and Nancy (Steve Cleek) Birch of Reno; and her son, Martin (Linda) Birch of Vacaville, Calif.; four grandchildren; one great grandchild; and numerous nieces and nephews.

A family memorial service is to be scheduled at a later date.

Wanda Gloria Walker

May 25 1930 - October 3, 2002. Wanda Gloria Walker age 72 peacefully passed away with her family at her side Thursday evening October 3rd, 2002 at Enloe Community Hospital located in Chico, CA.

Born May 25th, 1930 in Vina, CA to Jackson and Georgia Shea-Walker she spent her youth residing in Reno, NV and Greenville, CA. She has been a resident of Chester, CA for the past eighteen months moving here from Lund, NV where she had resided for twenty-two years prior.

Wanda was an accomplished musician who started developing her talent while attending Greenville High School and Reno High School in the late 1940's as a member of their choir. She went on to take voice lessons and establish a career as a professional musician specializing in Country and Western and Pop music. She was a longtime member of the Reno, Nevada Musicians Local and had performed throughout the entire West Coast, Hawaii and Alaska during her career. She enjoyed the outdoors thru camping, and gardening and found great enjoyment in crocheting items and cooking for her family. She looked forward to participating in Kareokee whenever she had the chance. She had been named an honorary Member of the American Legion Post of Sedro-Woolley, WA.

Wanda is survived by her children Rae Lynn Barbarigos of Chester, CA and Jackson Bennett Taylor of Ely, NV; grandchildren Michael Barbarigos of Reno, NV, Glenn Taylor of Henderson, NV, Joelyn Taylor of Colorado Springs, CO and Jerred Taylor of Las Vegas, NV along with five great grandchildren. She is preceded in death by two brothers and one sister.

A celebration of Wanda's life will take place 11:00 a.m. Friday, October 11th, 2002 in the Chester District Cemetery. An opportunity to sign the memorial register along with leaving the family a personal memorial tribute is available online at www.fehrmanmortuary.com. The family suggest any donations in her memory be made to the American Lund Association c/o Fehrman Mortuary and Crematory P.O. Box 803 Greenville, CA 95947.

Dolores Smith Bulow

St. George, UT--Dolores Smith Bulow, 83, died August 13, 2001, in St. George, Utah. She was born November 24, 1917 in Richmond, Utah to Melvin and Bernetta Fackrell Smith. She married Ernest Roy Bulow in San Francisco, California on July 3, 1942. The marriage was later solemnized in the St. George Temple.

Dolores was raised in Fairview, Idaho. She graduated from Preston High School and went on to receive a registered nurse degree in September, 1940. She entered the army in September, 1941 and was a second lieutenant in the Army Nurse Corp. She received a bachelor of science degree from the University of Utah. She later received a teaching certificate from Utah State. Dolores was a special education teacher and taught 27 years at Lane City School in Ely, Nevada. During her years as a teacher she was recognized as the BPW Woman of the Year. She received the Nevada State Education Distinguished Service Award. She retired from teaching in 1983 and later moved to St. George, Utah. Dolores had many hobbies and during her younger years she spent many hours searching the hills for rocks. She had a love for the beauties of nature. She loved to read and arrange flowers. She enjoyed traveling and particularly loved to go for long rides.

She is survived by two sons, Ernest (Michelle) Bulow, Gallop, New Mexico and Barry (Teresa) Bulow, Washington, Utah. She has six grandchildren, Tracy (Phillip) Anderson; Barry Ryan (Tara), Lisa, Brandon, Brett and Erin Bulow. She also has three great-granddaughters, Ashleigh, Shalee and Brittany Anderson. She is survived by a brother, Norman Smith, Eugene, Oregon and a sister, Lorraine Jensen, Ogden, Utah, and many nieces and nephews. She is preceded in death by her husband, parents, a brother and three sisters.

Funeral services will be held August 15, 2001 at 2 p.m. at the Metcalf Mortuary Chapel. A visitation will be held from 12:30-1:30 prior to the service. A graveside service will be held august 18, 2001 in Fairview, Idaho at 11:00 a.m. Interment will be in the Fairview Cemetery.

Cynthia Marie Bohrn

Cynthia Marie Bohrn of Ely died Saturday, Nov. 17, 2001, from injuries sustained in an auto accident in Utah. She was 21.

Miss Bohrn was born July 29, 1980, in Elko to Danny Lee and Linda Jean (Loveridge) Bohrn.

She was graduated from White Pine High School in 1999 and was a student at Great Basin Community College, where she was to be graduated in Spring 2002 with an associate's degree in elementary education.

She was a member of the Ely First Ward of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

She was an avid collector of Beanie Babies and enjoyed chatting with her friends on the Internet. She also enjoyed art and wanted to be a teacher to help bring art back into the classroom.

Survivors include her mother, an Ely resident, a sister Mandy Caron; a brother, Walter Bohrn of Ely; a niece, Mariah Caron of Ely; two nephews: Justin Blakely and Brody Bohrn, both of Ely; grandparents: Lyle and Phyllis Lyman of McGill and Lynn and Elaine Loveridge of Blue Bell, Utah; as well as numerous aunts, uncles and cousins.

She was preceded in death by her father.

Services were scheduled for Wednesday, Nov. 21, at 10 a.m. in the Ely LDS Stake Center with Bishop Stuart Tracy presiding. Burial was to follow in the Ely City Cemetery.

Listed as pallbearers were: Walter Bohrn, William Sorenson, Robert Loveridge, Howard Bohrn, LeRoy Metcalf and Dan Battrick. Among the honorary pallbearers are: Steven Loveridge, Jeffrey Lyman, Lynn Loveridge, Robert Thompson, Michaiel Orrillo and Lyle Lyman.

Ronald Bruce Adams

Ronald Bruce Adams of Ely died Monday, Dec. 17, 2001, at the University of Utah Medical Center in Salt Lake City. He was 50.

Mr. Adams was born in Ely March 17, 1951, to Bruce and Jean Raley Adams. He attend Ely Grade School and was graduated from White Pine High School in 1969.

He enjoyed hunting and fishing.

Survivors include a son, Matthew Luke Adams of Ely; three sisters: Tamara (Rick) Sandoval of McGill, Kathy Barkdull of Lund and Louise (Ray) Cox of Farmington, Utah; a brother, Art (Kristie) Carling of Reno; an uncle, Herbert Adams of Ely; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents.

A memorial service is to be scheduled at a later date, however the family suggests memorial donations in Mr. Adams' name be made to Nevada Home Health Services, c/o Marie Carrick, 685 Lyons Ave. Ely, NV 89301.

Paul H. Mascarenas

Former Ely resdient Paul H. Mascarenas of Reno died Saturday, May 18, 2002, at Physicians Hospital. He was 76.

Mr. Mascarenas was born to Demetrio and Rafaelita (Maestas) Mascarenas on May 9, 1926, in Kansas City, Kan. He had lived in Reno for 40 years, moving from Ely, where he had worked for the Nevada Northern Railway.

He was a member of the Laborer's International Union of North America Local 169.

He is survived by his wife Mary; children: James Mascarenas, Anthony Mascarenas, Beatriz Huddleston, Linda Coleman, Victor Archuleta, Manuel Archuleta, Carlos Archuleta, Sandra Esquival, Eliane Allen, Gertude Marquez and Virginia Sambrano; siblings Esther Ford, Demetrio Mascarenas and Roger Mascarenas; as well as many grandchildren, great grandchildren, nieces and nephews.

A memorial service was scheduled for Wednesday, May 22, at Walton's Sparks Funeral Home.

Aletha Gilbert

Aletha Winn Manwell Gilbert died Monday, Sept. 30, 2002, in Bountiful, Utah. She was 91.

Born July 2, 1911, in Grand Junction, Colo., to Harry Baker (Studebaker) and Sarah Elizabeth Stevens. She spent her early years in Monroe, Utah, where she attended South Sevier High School. She loved and excelled in speech, drama and dance.

She married Milo Winn on Dec. 5, 1929, and they had three daughters and one son. He died July 12, 1960. She married Eddie Manwell on Aug 24, 1962. He died in 1964. On Nov. 24, 1970, she married Albert Gilbert in the LDS Oakland Temple and in 1972 they served a LDS mission in the Walnut Creek, Calif., area.

She was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

Mrs. Gilbert was proud of her pioneer heritage and was active in the Studebaker family. She always helped those in need and she invited the homeless, servicemen and family members into her home. In later years she served as a dorm mother at BYU Provo, Tarlton University in Texas and the Bureau of Indian Affairs in Richfield, Utah.

Her two sisters, Grace Bates Hill and Thelma Gurr preceded her in Death.

She is survived by her three daughters: Donna Lee Whipple (Gene), Geneal Spencer (Quinn) and Veoma Slater (Darold), her son Melvin Winn and Stepson and Stepdaughter Jim Gilbert (Wanda) and Evelyn Ziomke (Bob). She has 17 grandchildren, 60 great grandchildren and 7 great great grandchildren.

Graveside services were to be held Thursday, Oct. 3, at noon in the Monroe City Cemetery. A special memorial service was scheduled Friday, Oct. 4, at noon in the Taylorsville Meadowbrook Ward, 125O W. Atherton.

Sonia DeHart

Sonia DeHart of Genoa, a member of a pioneer Nye County family, passed away Friday, July 18, 2003. She was 96.

Mrs. DeHart was a fourth generation Nevadan. Her grandparents, Joseph and Sophie Williams established the Hot Creek Ranches. The Upper Hot Creek Ranch still is owned by the family.

She was born in Tonopah in 1906 to Victor and Elizabeth Barndt. Her parents and grandparents operated the Hot Creek Ranches and several mining properties in the region.

Raised on the ranch, she learned to be a cowgirl: riding roping and shooting. She accompanied her mother on a cattle drive to Ely, 90 miles away.

The family sent her to Hollywood in her teens to learn to dance. She joined the Koslov Ballet Company and performed in ballets, operas and silent films. She lived and danced in New York before moving to Europe where she danced with a ballet troupe in Germany and France.

She performed as a soloist at the 1923 opening of the San Francisco Opera Co. She traveled to Argentina with another ballet troupe where she met Lee Cochran, the American vice counsel in Buenos Aries. They married in 1928 and moved to New York.

She joined the Rockettes and toured Canada and the Northwest to make money during the years of the Great Depression. They later moved to Los Angeles and then to Tonopah. After a short time in Carson City, the couple settled in Genoa in 1941.

She and Cochran had six children together.

After his death, she later married Howard DeHart. He also preceded her in death.

She operated the Episcopal thrift shop in Genoa for many years and owned the first antique store there. She also helped in Genoa's main fundraiser, the Candy Dance, by making fudge.

She maintained her independence until just weeks before her death.

She is survived by her six children: Alice Cleary of Genoa, David Cochran of Danville, Calif., Rosemary Girolamo of Reno, Robert Cochran of Anacortes, Wash., Robert Pope of Hot Springs Village, Ark., and Gilbert Cochran of Reno; 15 grandchildren; and 25 great grandchildren. Survivors also include a sister, Elizabeth Crouse of Genoa and a niece, Hope Falcke.

Services were held Monday, July 21, at St. Gall Catholic Church in Gardnerville. She was buried in the Genoa Cemetery.

Her daughter, Alice Cleary said, "She lived alone right up to the end. She died in her own home and that's how she would have it."

Lillian Albanese Naylor

Lillian A. Naylor, 80, passed away May 26, 2002, in Salt Lake City, Utah.

Born Nov. 16, 1921, in West Jordan, Utah to Nicola and Olga Johnson Albanese. She has been a resident of Ely for 45 years.

She married David Joseph Naylor on April 27, 1941. Their marriage was solemnized in the Logan LDS Temple. He preceded her in death on Jan. 3, 1994.

Mrs. Naylor was active in the LDS Church, including Primary, Relief Society, and the Young Women's program. She served in the genealogy extraction program for the past four years. She attended Jordan High School and was valedictorian of her graduating class.

She is survived by sons and daughters: Bruce D. (Sharon), Dayton, Idaho; Carol H., Ogden, Utah; Janet N. Eldridge (Michael), Ely; Paul R., Ogden, Utah; eight grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; and sister, Helen A. Haun, Midvale, Utah.

Graveside services were scheduled for Friday, May 31, at 2 p.m. at the West Jordan City Cemetery, 7800 South 1300 West, West Jordan, Utah.

Memorial services will also be held on Monday, June 3 at 1 p.m. at the Ely 2nd Ward in Ely.
