Donald 'Scotty' Mason

Donald "Scotty" Mason of McGill died Friday. Sept. 27, 2002, at William Bee Ririe Hospital in Ely. He was 68.

Mr. Mason was born May 22, 1934, in Douglas, Wyo., to Clarence and Belma (Wright) Mason.

A truck driver, he had lived in this area since moving here in 1984 from Mobile, Ala.

He was a member of the Disabled American Veterans, Chapter 10; James Jewell Post 3547 of the Veterans of Foreign Wars; and American Legion Post No. 3 in Ely.

He shared his knowledge of veteran affairs by helping local veterans learn about and apply for the benefits.

He enjoyed traveling and woodworking.

Mr. Mason is survived by his wife, Karen Mason, of Ely; three step-children: Dawn McNay of Ely, Bobbie Simmons of Las Vegas and Justin Simmons of Desert Hot Springs, Calif.; and two step-grandchildren: Ashley McNay of Ely and Kionna McNay of Ely.

Visitation was scheduled for Tuesday, Oct. 1, at 10 a.m. at the Mountain Vista Chapel in Ely. Services were to follow there at 11 a.m. under the direction of Gene Skinner and the VFW. Burial was to follow in the Ely City Cemetery.

The list of pallbearers included: Wayne Bryant, Mark Buffalo Stevens, Lorenzo Miller, Jack Vancamp, Alan Miller and Clayton Morgan. Sam Johnson, Frankie Cocca, Vernon Sonny Johnson and Mike Muscrove have been named honorary pallbearers.

Robert E. Grenig

Lt. Col. (Ret.) Robert E. Grenig, 84, of Scottsdale, AZ, died Sunday, July 27, 2003. Born Aug. 4, 1918, in Chicago, Illinois, he served with the U.S. Army from 1941 until 1961. Robert was stationed in Korea, Japan, Vietnam and the Philippines. He began a second career with Arizona Bank where he remained nearly 20 years before again retiring.

Robert is survived by his wife, Betty of Scottsdale; son, Jay and wife Sharon of Delafield, Wisconsin; daughter, Carolyn and husband, Lance Magnes of Indianapolis; and four grandchildren.

Private services have been held. Memorial contributions in his name may be made to Hospice of Arizona 2222 W. Northern Ave. Suite A 100, Phoenix, AZ 85201. Arrangements by Messigner Indian School Mortuary, Scottsdale, AZ.

Clarence Thompson

Long-time Duckwater resident Clarence Thompson died Sunday, Oct. 6, 2002, in Salt Lake City. He was 67.

Mr. Thompson was born in Death Valley, Calif., on Oct. 20, 1934, to Fred Thompson and Nellie Kennedy.

He attended school at Duckwater and the Stewart boarding school.

His passtines included riding horses, fishing, hunting, pinenut gathering, dancing and baseball.

Mr. Thompson is survived by Luella T. Connors of Porterville, Calif., Frederick Thompson of Ely, Darlene Thompson of Oakland, Calif., Geraldine Seepie of Sacramento, Calif., Lorraine T. Fritzel of Evanston, Wyo., Geraldine T. Reilley of Ely and Gene Thompson of Magma, Utah.

He was preceded in death by his parents and brothers: Nelson, Clino, Bernard, Duane and Howard Thompson.

Services were scheduled Saturday, Oct. 12, at 11 a.m. in the Duckwater Tribal Gym. Ernie Hopper of Fallon is to officiate.

Listed as pallbearers are: Cordell and Daniel Mike , Tony Baca, Luke Thompson and Rodney and William Thompson.

Listed as honorary pallbearers are: Douglas George, Sr., Henry Blackeye, Sr., Henry Blackeye, Jr., Tim, Wendell, Fred, Gene and Stanley Thompson, Darrell Tompson, Sr., Darrell Thompson, Jr., Steven Mike, Ferguson and Harry Johnnie, Bernie Reilley, Sr., Bernie Reilley, Jr., Allen Lenbek and Ondy Thompson.

Burial is to be held in the Duckwater Cemetery following the services. A potluck meal is scheduled afterward.

Charles Harold Griffith

Charles Harold Griffith of Mesa, Ariz., died at his home on Wednesday, Jan. 15, 2003. He was 56.

Mr. Griffith was born June 14, 1946, in Cleveland, Ohio, to Harold F. Griffith and Edna Wright Griffith.

A former White Pine County resident, he was graduated from White Pine High School in 1964 and lived here until the mid 1980s before moving to St. George, Utah.

He married the former Clarissa Andrew in St. George, in October 1989. Their marriage was later solemnized in the St. George LDS Temple.

He worked in the mining industry and radio, but most recently was a land-use researcher in Phoenix, Ariz.

Mr. Griffith was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

He was a U.S. Air Force veteran.

He enjoyed reading, singing in the church choir and family-oriented activities.

Survivors include his wife Clarissa, a Mesa resident; a son, Nicholas (Jennifer) Griffith of Las Vegas; a daughter, Arianna of Mesa; stepchildren: Christopher Andrew of San Diego, Calif., Shana (Bill) Plauman of Surprise, Ariz., Carmel Andrew of Mesa, Brandon Andrew of San Diego and Mindy Saxton (of a previous marriage).

Mr. Griffith also is survived by his mother, Edna Griffith of Ely; five brothers: Danny (Corky) and Alan (Robin), all of Ely, Ray (Wende) of Denver, Colo., Carlyle (Debbie) and Bob (Nellie) of Reno; two sisters: Annette (Cal) Higbee of West Valley, Utah, and Barbara (Sam) Baker of Ruth; as well as 11 grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.

Services were held Tuesday, Jan. 21, at the Red Mountain LDS Ward Chapel with Bishop Nelson officiating. Burial followed in the Mesa City Cemetery.

The pallbearers were: Alan, Danny, Carlyle and Ray Griffith, Nicholas Griffith, Brandon and Christopher Andrew and Austin Clarkson.

Dale Brazell

Dale Blain Brazell, 35, of Ely died Friday, July 19, 2002. He was born April 1, 1967, in Fairbanks, Alaska, to Edgar Brazell and Willetta Camitsch. He had lived in Ely since 1992, coming from Sterling, Va., and worked as a dietitian at William Bee Ririe Hospital. Brazell was a member of First Baptist Church in Ely, and liked fishing, hunting, camping and working on automobiles. He is survived by his wife, Terese Brazell of Ely; son, Cameron Brazell of Ely; brothers: Troy Brazell of Darnestown, Md., and Larry Miller of Spokane, Wash.; father, Edgar Brazell of Prescott, Ariz.; mother, Willetta Camitsch of Spokane, Wash.; and maternal grandparents, Claude and Blanche Knox of Vancouver, Wash. Services were held Wednesday, July 24, at Mountain Vista Chapel, followed by burial at Ely City Cemetery. Pallbearers were Troy Brazell, Phillip Romero, Larry Miller, Donn Kipp, Daryl Camitsch and Mike Stewart.

Ruth Britton

Memorial services for Ruth Irene Britton were held Friday, July 26, 2002, at 11 a.m. at First Baptist Church of Ely, with Rev. Wayne Hudson officiating. Mrs. Britton, 77, died on July 3 at White Pine Care Center. She was born June 14, 1925, in Laurel, Mont., and had lived in White Pine and Nye counties since 1966, moving from Colorado. She is survived by her husband, Ernest, of Ely; son Danny of Douglas, Wyo.; daughter Nancy of Portola, Calif.; a brother and four sisters, all of Montana; three grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.

Harold Clark

Harold Leroy Clark, 66, of Ruth, died Thursday, July 25, 2002, at William Bee Ririe Hospital in Ely. He was born March 6, 1936, in Bellvue, Iowa, to James and Gladys (Tracey) Clark. He was a retired Army sergeant and liked music, reading and metal-detecting. He is survived by his son, Brian Clark, of Fort Polk, La.; brothers: Wayne and Jimmy Clark of Maquoketa, Iowa, and Ronald Clark of San Andres, Calif.; sisters: Anna Adam of Maquoketa, Iowa, Judy Portz of Bellvue, Iowa, and Donn Portz of Cedar Rapids, Iowa; and five grandchildren.

Helen Layton

Helen F. Layton, 92, died July 20, 2002, in Spring Creek, where she had been living with her daughter, Donna Jones. A native of Ogden, Utah, she was born Feb. 17, 1910, to George Ferguson and Estella Burrup. She was married 67 years to Herman Layton, who preceded her in death in 1997. Mrs. Layton lived in Carlin for 50 years and was an active member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. She was an excellent speaker and story writer and the church was an important part of her life. She was known as the "family mender" because she loved making quilts, any kind of embroidery, crochet and mending. She is survived by her son, Terry Layton, of Kansas City, Mo.; her daughter, Donna Jones, of Spring Creek; 14 grandchildren; and 31 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, Herman; son, Ray; daughter, Darlene Bianucci; and brother, Wayne Ferguson. Funeral services were held Wednesday, July 24, in Carlin.

Rosie Sanchez

Erme Linda Rosalia Sanchez died Sunday, July 21, 2002, at White Pine Care Center. She was 80. Mrs. Sanchez was born March 13, 1922, in Paso Montes, N.M., and lived in Ely since 1952. She is survived by her husband, Jose; daughter, Lillie Montoya, of Ely; sister, Martha Rodriguez, of Mesa, Ariz.; four granddaughters; and seven great-grandchildren. Recitation of the rosary is scheduled for Wednesday, July 24, at 7 p.m. at Mountain Vista Chapel. Mass of Christian burial is Thursday, July 25, at 11 a.m. at Sacred Heart Catholic Church. Burial to follow at the Ely City Cemetery. The family is requesting donations be made to Home Health Services of Nevada, care of Marie Carrick, 685 Lyons Ave., in Ely.

Ruth Shultz

Ruth Bayne Shultz, 85, of Ely, died Wednesday, July 24, 2002, at White Pine Care Center. Mrs. Shultz was born July 29, 1916, in Bluffton, Ind., to Sylvester and Emma (Curry) Miller. She was a resident of Ely for 27 years, coming from Reno, and worked as a restaurant waitress. Her hobbies were crossword puzzles and playing cards. She is survived by two sons: Denny High of West Yarmouth, Mass., and Larry High of Boalsburg, Penn.; six grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren. No services were held.
