Elene Stoffel

Elene May Stoffel, 72, formerly of Ely, died Wednesday, July 24, 2002, in Portsmouth, Va. A native of McGill, she was the widow of LaVern Stoffel and daughter of the late Reginald Knight and Olive May Beauchamp. She was a member of Ely United Methodist Church and Rebekah Lodge in Ely and was a Cub Scout den mother. She owned a fabric and crafts store in Ely. She is survived by sons: Mark Stoffel of Suffolk, Va., Valdon Stoffel of San Diego, Calif., and Paul Stoffel of Belgrade, Mont.; sister Dorothy Sjogren; brother Edwin Beauchamp; and five grandchildren. A memorial service will be held in Ely at a later date. Contributions may be made to the Ely United Methodist Church.

LaNae Littledike Dallon

LaNae Littledike Dallon of Sandy, Utah, died at her home on Sunday, Nov. 24, 2002.

Born June 17, 1931, in Smithfield, Utah, she was the daughter of Elisha A. and Lola Merrill Littledike. She graduated from North Cache High School and later graduated from the Thomas D. Dee Hospital School of Nursing.

She married Frank William Dallon in the Logan LDS Temple on Sept. 14, 1953. They lived in Seattle, Wash., and Aberdeen, Md, Brigham City and Logan, Utah, Ely and finally Sandy.

Mrs. Dallon was an active member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, serving as Relief Society President and working in Primary and the Young Women's Program. With her husband, she served a mission for the church in the England, London, South Mission. She worked for many years at LaNore's Nursing Home in Draper, Utah. She enjoyed working and reading, but most of all she enjoyed her family. Dallon was an optimistic person, who, through her many health challenges, always had a positive and hopeful outlook. She always thought of others before herself. She loved her family and stayed close to and encouraged them. She loved her neighbors and ward members who have been so good to her.

She is survived by her husband, Frank W. Dallon, of Sandy; her four children: Kevin (Barbara) Dallon, Brigham City, Michelle (Spencer) Cannon, American Fork, Craig (Melanie) Dallon, Omaha, Neb., and John (Laurie) Dallon, Spanish Fork; 16 grandchildren; and her parents-in-law, Frank S. and Verda Dallon, Sandy.

Funeral services will be Wednesday, Nov. 27, at 11 a.m.., Canyon View Stake Center, 9119 South 1300 East, Sandy. Friends may come by prior to the funeral, 10-10:45 a.m., at the Stake Center. Burial is to be in the Mountain View Memorial Cemetery.

Donald S. Dondero

Ely native Donald S. Dondero died Friday, May 30, 2003, at his home in Reno. He was 83.

Mr. Dondero died in his sleep with his family at his side.

He was born at the Steptoe Hospital in East Ely on Jan. 31, 1920, to Fuiro Nicholas and Carna Damm Dondero.

When he was a child, the family moved to Carson City, and he graduated from Carson High School in 1937. He attended the University of Nevada Reno before enlisting in the Navy as a pilot during World War II.

When he returned from the war, he married Elizabeth Franks in 1945 and they began a family. His long and illustrious career as a professional photographer made him well known on a local, national and international front, and he continued working until very recently.

Surviving are daughters: Carolyn Dondero of Santa Clarita, Calif., Lynn (Kevin) Weatherford of Sparks and Debbie Dondero of Reno; granddaughter, Sara Weatherford of Reno; brother, Jerry (Pat) of Las Vegas, and nephew Mike (Cathy) of Las Vegas.

Private burial was held Tuesday, June 3, at Masonic Memorial Gardens Mausoleum. In celebration of the lives of Mr. Dondero and his wife, who died May 16, a public memorial was held Friday, June 6, at the California Building at Idlewild Park.

Gary Ralph Adair

Gary Ralph Adair of Hawthorne died Sunday, Sept. 21, 2003. He was 62.

Mr. Adair is survived by his mother, Mildred Adair of Sunnyside; a son, Steve (Burel) Adair of Hawthorne; and two grandchildren: Kathy Adair and Kenneth Adair, both of Hawthorne. Survivors also include three brothers: Bill (Julie) Adair of Ely, Richard (Cheryl) Adair of Richmond, Ore., and Louis (Dori) Shaffer of Alturas, Calif.; and a sister, JoAnn Ryann of Tonopah.

Mr. Adair enjoyed hunting, fishing and being in the outdoors.

At his request, there will be no services. His wish was for friends and family to remember him as he was in life and not in death.

Lee E. Horsley

Lee E. Horsley of Reno, died Saturday, Nov. 16, 2002, at St. Mary's Hospital in Reno. He was 80.

Mr. Horsley was born July 6, 1922, in Lund to John P. and Hannah A. Jensen Horsley, the youngest of 11 children.

Mr. Horsley had lived in Reno for the past three years, moving there from Fallon. He also had lived in Yerington.

He was a retired State of Nevada worker. He ended his 30-year career as manager of the Mason Valley Wildlife Management Area in Yerington.

Mr. Horsley was a World War II veteran of the U.S. Army Air Corps, having served in the Pacific.

He was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

Mr. Horsley was preceded in death by his wife, Loretta, in 1997, and eight of his brothers and sisters.

Survivors include a stepson, Greg (Beverly) Monroe of Reno; brothers: Ray (Polly) Horsley of Cedar Bluff, Ala., and Lynn (Lois) Horsley of Lund; three step grandchildren; 14 step great grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Visitation is scheduled Friday, Nov. 22, noon to 2 p.m., at the Smith Family Funeral Home, 505 Rio Vista Dr., in Fallon (775-423-2255). Graveside services are to follow at 3 p.m. at the Northern Nevada Veterans Cemetery in Fernley.

Lucinda May Bainbridge

Lucinda May Bainbridge, of Ely died Monday, Jan. 27, 2003. She was 52.

Mrs. Bainbridge was born July 3, 1950, in Philadelphia, Pa. She had lived in this area the past 14 years, moving from California.

A homemaker, she volunteered as a board member for Support, Inc. Mrs. Bainbridge was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church and was involved with religious education there.

She enjoyed cooking, her family and gardening.

Mrs. Bainbridge is survived by two sons: Christian Kassoff of Huntington Beach, Calif., and J. Michael Bainbridge of Ely; and a grandson, Damien Kassoff of Huntington Beach.

A rosary service was scheduled for Sunday, Feb. 2, at 7 p.m. in the Mountain Vista Chapel. A memorial mass was held Monday, Feb. 3, at 11 a.m. at Sacred Heart. Father Phil Audet celebrated the mass.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to St. Mary's Hospice of Northern Nevada, 520 W. 6th St, Reno, NV 89503.

Ressie Davis Read

Long-term Ely resident Ressie Davis Read of Prairie City, Ore., died there on Tuesday, Sept. 23, 2003. She was 96.

Mrs. Read was born in LaPlace, Ill., on Aug. 8, 1907, to Nannie May Bottom and Max W. Walls.

She lived in Ely for more than 50 years. She married Herman A. Read in Ely on Christmas Day 1926. He preceded her in death.

Mrs. Read was a homemaker and librarian.

While living in Ely, she was a member of the Nevada Historical Society, the Order of the Eastern Star and the United Methodist Church. After moving to Oregon in October 1999, she continued to be active with the Eastern Star sisterhood and the Methodist Church.

She also volunteered at the Holy Rosary Medical Center in Ontario, Ore.

She loved reading and studied U.S. western history.

Mrs. Read is survived by a daughter, Susan D. Read of John Day, Ore.; daughter-in-law Soon Ki Read of San Francisco, Calif.; and grandson Phillip B. Walker of Great Lakes, Ill.

She also was preceded in death by a son, Stanton Read; a daughter, Janet Davis Read; and a brother, James H. Walls.

Burial and a graveside service are to be conducted at the Ely City Cemetery at a later date.

Anna Ruth Mallard

Anna Ruth Mallard of Ely died Thursday, Nov. 21, 2002, at William Bee Ririe Hospital. She was 79.

Mrs. Mallard was born Sept. 24, 1923, in Frederick, Okla., to Archie and Ruth (Morris) Tharp.

She had lived in this area since 1981, moving to White Pine County from Barstow, Calif. Mrs. Mallard had worked as a secretary for Hughes Aircraft for 15 years.

She was a member of the BPOE Does Drove No. 26, the United Methodist Women and the Silly Symphony Orchestra at the White Pine Nutrition Center.

Her pass times included reading and crocheting. She is survived by her husband, Elmer T. Mallard of Ely; a son, John D. Shipman of Hesperia, Calif.; three grandsons; two great granddaughters; one great grandson; and a niece. She was preceded in death by her parents and a brother, John Tharp.

Memorial services are planned for Monday, Dec. 2, at 11 a.m. at Mountain Vista Chapel in Ely. Pastor Don Cutbirth is to officiate. A private, graveside service is to be conducted at a later date.

The family suggests memorial donations to the United Methodist Church Building Fund, c/o Treasurer Paul Podborny, HC 32, Box 32006, Ely, NV 89301.

Eula Wellman Kogan Benner

Eula Wellman Kogan Benner of Carlin died at Highland Manor Rest Home in Elko on Wednesday, Sept. 17, 2003. She was 73.

Mrs. Benner was born Nov. 6, 1929, in Burns, Ore., to Charles and Mary Ella Wellman. She was raised and educated in Ely.

She lived in Reno while raising her family until 1978 when she moved to Elko. She lived there until her retirement from J.C. Penney's, then moved to Carlin.

She is survived by her husband, David Benner of Carlin; children: Jody (Gene) Lee of Las Vegas, Judy (Bernie) Greene of Reno, Muggy (Jim) Freeman of Battle Mountain, Kris (Mike) Cecchi of Reno, Frank Kogan Jr. of Elko, and Sandy Kogan of Orange County, Calif.; as well as nine grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

Mrs. Benner was preceded in death by her parents, brothers Charles, Paul and Thomas Wellman and first husband Frank Kogan, Sr.

Memorial services were to be held Saturday, Sept. 27, at 1 p.m., at the First Baptist Church, 411 4th St., Carlin.

The family suggests contributions be made to the Elko Veterinary Clinic, 1850 Lamoille Highway, Elko, for the spaying/neutering and adoption of kittens and cats.

Wilma Mandas

Mandas, Wilma (Soter), born June 16, 1916. died Nov. 20, 2002, at Long Beach Memorial Hospital. Wilma was born in La Jolla, California, to the parents of Mary Brown Soter and James Soter. She moved to Magna, Utah, at an early age where she lived until her marriage to George Peter Mandas from Louka, Greece, on Oct. 15, 1936. They moved to McGill and raised eight children. After retirement in 1965, they relocated to Bellflower, Calif.

She is survived by her children, James (Dwala), Peter (Lindy), of Reno; Harry (Shelia), of Las Vegas; Mary (Chris), of Downey; Georgia, Yorba Linda; John (Rochelle), of Boise; Elaine, Bellflower; Michael (Angela), of Los Alamitos; and brother, Tom Soter of Ogden, Utah. She is also survived by grandchildren, Victoria, Deborah, Jim, Angela, Kim, Mike, Lani, Chris, Marina, Vasho, Joanna, John, Kostas, George, Angelo, and Brad, as well as 29 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren, numerous nieces and nephews and other loving family members.

Wilma was a devoted wife, mother, mother-in-law, Yia Yia, and friend. She carried on the traditions of her Greek heritage and passed them on to her children. She will forever remain in our hearts, and will always be remembered for her courage and strength. Her greatest joy in life was being with her family.

She was preceded in death by her husband, George Peter Mandas, brother, Frank Soter, son-in-law, Gus Hatzidakis, and grandson, Mark Stitt. The Trisagion was held Sunday, Nov. 24, at the Assumption of the Virgin Mary Greek Orthodox Church, Long Beach at 7 p.m. Funeral Services were conducted Monday morning, 11 a.m., at the church.
