Helen Malla Street

Helen Malla Street passed away peacefully on June 1, 2006, in Mission Viejo, Calif. at the age of 90. She had a beautiful gentle spirit that left a warm impression on every life she touched.

Helen was born on August 22, 1915, in San Leandro, Calif. to Stephan and Hildegard Vaczovsky. She spoke German until she started school and learned English. She spent most of her young life growing up in Berkeley, Calif. Helen loved to dance and it was at a dance that she eventually met her first husband Harry Street.

They were married in 1935 and had two daughters - Antoinette and Caroline. They moved to Alaska, Reno, and finally settled in Crystal Bay on the North shore of Lake Tahoe, where they raised their children.

In the summertime, Harry and Helen would pack-up the family and they would all go on camping trips, some lasting several months. They would endure the heat and dust, but Helen would always make sure her family was taken care of.

When Harry passed away in 1963, Helen married her second husband Ned Malla in 1966 and helped run his Motel in Kings Beach on Lake Tahoe. They spent winters in Quartzsite, Ariz. and finally moved there in 1969 after Ned retired.

Helen was widowed in 1971 and continued to live in Quartzsite for the next 30 years.

She loved playing bingo, enjoyed dancing at the QIA, and visiting with her many friends over coffee at the Stagecoach restaurant.

Helen enjoyed spending several weeks each summer with her daughter Antoinette, son-in-law Sheldon, and their three children. While in Quartzsite, she also prepared many Thanksgiving dinners for daughter Caroline and son-in-law Thomas and always did something memorable like serving mashed potatoes by flinging them onto a plate from across the table after having a couple of Manhattans, never missing her target!

She had a great sense of humor and always enjoyed a good laugh. Helen always had a kind heart. People would often approach Helen and ask her if she was Elizabeth Taylor, the actress. In her later years, Helen loved a great hamburger and insisted on one regularly! Helen will be missed, but we take comfort in the love she left in our hearts. Helen is survived by her daughter Antoinette Jones of Boise, Idaho and daughter and son-in-law Caroline and Thomas Maddock of Newport Beach, Calif. as well as three grandsons: Curtis (and wife Marsha), Bradley, and Troy Jones.

He loved hunting, camping, archery, golf and boating. Gary is survived by his three children, Jennifer, Laura and Matthew of Idaho. His parents Leo and Lillie Gleason, his sister, Kathleen Lindberg and his aunt and uncle JoAnn and Bunny Barredo all of Fallon; and his brother, Larry Gleason of Reno. Toby Hampshire

Tobias Landon Hampshire, Toby to his friends and family, beloved son of Evelyn and Jeff Hampshire of Del Mar, Calif., was killed just outside of Okayama, Japan in a motorcycle accident, Sunday Aug. 6, 2006.

Engaged to Incline resident, Marni Pratt, they were planning to be married on June 9 of next year. His parents, his fiancee and her son, Mason Pratt, as well as his sister Lauren of San Diego and brother Jeremy of New York survive him.

Toby's permanent residence was Coronado, Calif., but he has owned a condominium in South Lake Tahoe since 1992 and spent most of his summers there.

Having sold his house in Coronado, he had planned on making his permanent residence in Incline with Marni. He was in Japan filming an independent project, which he and his best friend expected to enter into the Sundance Film Festival for competition.

He loved to surf and sail, was a Master Black Belt in Jujitsu, Shotokan and Kempo styles of martial arts, and had an eye for classic muscle cars.

Everything he did, he did to the best of his ability, there was very little he tried that he didn't excel.

He had a fantastic sense of humor and truly cared about the people around him. He was constantly amazed by the fact that the love of his life turned out to be someone he'd known for thirteen years and how easily the decision came to marry her.

He earned his finance degree in two-and-a-half years, graduating near the top of his class and ran three companies successfully for his family in New York, Los Angeles, and Seattle.

His intelligence and fairness was a trademark that each of the 71 managers and executives he supervised recognized in him.

It was of tantamount importance to Toby that everyone from entry-level apprentice to the most senior executive be treated with respect and shown that their contribution was appreciated.

His schedule was hectic, at best, especially with the addition of the production company he and his friend began seven years ago, with the intention of varying from Hollywood's mainstream blockbusters - but he was never too busy to devote his time to those who counted on him.

Something as simple as e-mailing his intended future stepson Mason that he was proud of him for the effort he put forward in football camp, or to forward his concern when he broke his collar bone snowboarding, was as important to him as conducting a year-end multi-company conference call with his top brass.

That and constantly reminding Mason to clean his room, a constant subject of amusement between them.

More than anything he was looking forward to making Incline his home and getting to know the people he'd come to know over the telephone and over the Internet, having not been able to meet many of Marni's family and friends in person because of his schedule.

It hardly seems fair that these people should be robbed of the relationship this special person could have added in their lives. We can only imagine he was needed elsewhere more.

His impact on the lives around him was amazing and his loss a complete devastation, but he was a firm believer in shouldering on and he would expect his family and friends to do the same. We will continue in example of his strength, generosity and love of life, but we will miss him more than human emotion or words can describe.
