Janet Lee Morton

Janet Lee Morton, 74, a Carson City resident for the past 33 years, died Oct. 24, 2004, at home. She was born Oct. 4, 1930, in Calipatria, Calif., to Grant and Wilhamina Bair.

Before moving to Carson City, she lived in Los Angeles.

Mr. Morton worked for many years as a telephone operator.

She enjoyed bowling, traveling and spending time with her children. She was a Catholic.

Among her survivors are her husband of 55 years, Charles of Carson City; son, Charles W. of Madison, Ala.; daughter, Sherry Lee Morton of Whittier, Calif.; and four grandchildren.

At her request, no service is scheduled.

Walton's Chapel of the Valley is in charge of arrangements.

James Chester McKay

A funeral for James Chester McKay, 57, a Smith Valley native and long-time resident, will be at 10 a.m. today at the Smith Valley United Community Church with Pastor Tom Walburn officiating.

Mr. McKay died Oct. 26, 2004, at his home in Smith Valley. He was born May 7, 1947, in Yerington, to Mervin and Marjorie Keeley-McKay.

He attended Smith Valley schools, graduating from high school in 1966 and then attended the University of Nevada, Reno.

He married Kathy DeVore Sept. 16, 1968. He married Linda Morelock Sept. 29, 1974, at Lake Tahoe. He married Christi Russell Jan. 18, 2004.

Mr. McKay loved the mountains, ranching and his cowboy life. His first job off the ranch was for the United States Forest Service, stationed at the Wheeler Guard Station. He worked on the hotshot crew for four years. In 1970, he moved to Chino, Calif., to become Brood Mare Foreman at the Rex Ellsworth Race Horse Ranch. Returning to Nevada, he worked as assistant manager of the Terrible Herbst Gas Station in Reno. He went to work for Mayfair Market in Reno in 1975 and remained there until he returned to Smith Valley to ranch full time. After the sale of the McKay Ranch, he worked for the Flying A Ranch in Smith Valley where he remained until his death.

He was preceded in death by his father.

Among his survivors are his wife Christi of Smith Valley; daughter, Sheila McKay-Garcia of Klamath Falls, Ore.; son, James Robert of Gardnerville; mother Marjorie McKay-Linscott and stepfather Jack Linscott of Smith Valley; sister and brother-in-law Bert and Dixie King of Reno; brother, Bob of Smith Valley; sister, Mary Duhart of Yerington; sister and brother-in-law Clay and Jackie Coburn of Paducah, Ky.; great-aunt Ethel Schmidt of Yerington; five grandchildren; one great-grandchild and many nieces and nephews.

Freitas Rupracht Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Josephine E. Jordan

A visitation for Josephine E. Jordan, 73, a six-year Carson City resident, will be held from 6-8 p.m. today at FitzHenry's Chapel of Faith.

She died Oct. 27, 2004, at her home.

Ms. Jordan was born April 3, 1931, in Santa Fe, N.M., to Jesus and Sophia Renteria Pallares.

Before moving to Carson City, she lived in Danville, Ill., where she was a caseworker for the Department of Public Aid for 20 years.

She was a Catholic and a CASA volunteer. Her passion was her grandchildren.

Among her survivors are daughter and son-in-law Michele and Richard Curry of Dayton; sons and daughters-in-law James and Deanetta of Williston, Vt., and Matt and Jill of Redlands, Calif.; brother Joe Pallares of Fairfield, Calif.; granddaughter Chandler Curry of Dayton; and grandsons Jason and Ed of Williston and Shane, Justin, Taylor and Grant of Redlands.

A private family service will be held. FitzHenry's Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mary Moulton

A graveside service for Mary Moulton, 89, a 55-year resident of Reno and four-year resident of Carson City, will be held at Mother of Sorrows Cemetery at 1 p.m. Friday.

Ms. Moulton died Oct. 18, 2004.

She was born May 25, 1915, in New Bedford, Mass., to William J. and Mary Murphy Moulton.

She graduated from New Bedford High School in 1933. In 1945, after World War II, she moved to Reno with her mother and sister.

She worked for the University of Nevada then retired from the State Controller's Office after 30 years.

She enjoyed golf, painting miniatures, lunching with friends, Irish music, singing, knitting, bowling and reading.

She was a Catholic and attended Our Lady of Sorrows Church.

She was preceded in death by her brother, Willie, in 1924; sisters Nora Ellen Moulton in 1989 and Elizabeth Alice Lewis in 1998; and niece Linda Lewis Milillo in 2000.

Among her survivors are niece and husband Nancy and Rex Johnson of Carson City; nephew and wife Thomas and Sharon Lewis of Portola, Calif.; grandnieces and -nephews Kendall Inskip of Sparks, Gaelen Lamb of Carson City, Alix Zeme and Rachael Lewis of Reno, Aaron Lewis of Hawaii and Bryan Melillo of New York City; eight great-grandnieces and -nephews; and cousin and husband Dorothy and William McCauley of Santa Ana, Calif.

A memorial is being established with the Carmelite Monastery, 1951 LaFond Drive, Reno NV 89509.

Arrangements are by O'Brien, Rogers and Crosby Funeral Home.

Nan Doporto

A celebration of life for Nan Doporto will be at 5:30 p.m. Thursday. Call 888-9098 for details.

Mrs. Doporto died Oct. 19, 2004, at home in Carson City. She was born March 13, 1940.

Rose C. Lee

A celebration of life for Rose C. Lee, 88, a Lake Tahoe resident for the past 68 years, will be from 2-4 p.m. Nov. 12 at her home.

There will be a private internment in her family plot in the Genoa Cemetery.

Mrs. Lee died Oct. 21, 2004, at Carson-Tahoe Hospital. She was born April 4, 1916, in Bodie, Calif., to Frank and Mary Canonica.

She moved to Genoa when she was 6 months old, attended local schools, and graduated from Douglas County High School in Minden.

She married Ernest "Ernie" Lee in 1936 in Reno.

Mrs. Lee worked with her husband for Zephyr Cove Lodge. After moving to Glenbrook in 1945, they worked for Max C. Fleischmann for 20 years. She operated the switchboard and worked part-time as a postal clerk in the old Glenbrook Lodge. For two winters in the 1940s, they co-managed the White Hills Ski Resort on Spooner Summit. She became postmaster of the Glenbrook Post Office in 1970, and served in that capacity until her retirement in 1982.

She was active in the Carson City Rebekah Lodge, Independent Order of Oddfellows and a member of the Ladies Auxiliary of the Fraternal Order of Eagles of Carson City.

She was preceded in death by her husband in 1970 in Glenbrook; daughter, Michelle Geer in 1990; and sister; Esther Copeland in 1998.

Among her survivors are her sister Alma M. Franklin of Carson City; brother, Frank Canonica of Marysville, Calif.; eight nieces; one nephew; and several grand-nieces and grand-nephews.

Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society or to the Nevada Human Society.

FitzHenry's Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Jeremy Neal Kerns

A memorial service for Jeremy Neal Kerns, 32, Carson City resident and a lifetime Nevada resident, will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at FitzHenry's Chapel of Faith.

Mr. Kerns died Oct. 28, 2004, in Reno. He was born Oct. 14, 1972, in Reno to John N. Kerns and Debbie Mulcare.

He attended Hug High School.

Mr. Kerns was an electrician in Carson City.

Among his survivors are his wife, Jett, and son, Eadoin, both of Carson City; father of Reno; mother of Silver Springs; brother and sister-in-law, Donald and Arcelia Kerns and nephews Darwin Torres and Christopher and Andrew Kerns, all of Reno; sister, Christina Kerns of Reno; grandmother, Martha Kerns of Redding, Calif.; and many uncles, aunts, cousins and friends.

Cremation will be at FitzHenry's Crematory.

FitzHenry's Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Morris Daniel Pursel

A graveside service for Morris Daniel Pursel, 82, a lifelong Mason Valley resident, will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday at the Valley Cemetery with military honors.

Visitation will be from 7-8 p.m. Thursday at the Freitas Rupracht Funeral Home in Yerington.

Mr. Pursel died Oct. 31, 2004, at the long-term-care unit of South Lyon Medical Center. He was born on the family farm July 19, 1922, to Wilton and Alva Williams Pursel.

He served in the Army Air Force during World War II.

Among his survivors are his brother Bill; brother and sister-in-law Jack and Nancy; niece, Victoria of Sparks; nephew, Joe of Reno; and numerous cousins.

Freitas Rupract Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Antoinette L. Rates-Higby

A celebration of life for Antoinette L. Rates-Higby, 54, a Carson City resident for the past 45 years, will be at the home of Mrs. Engleman at 1 p.m. Saturday.

Mrs. Rates-Higby died Oct. 30, 2004, in Carson City. She was born Feb. 17, 1950, in California to Michael Jack and Sarah Hixon Rates.

She graduated from Carson High School.

Before moving to Carson City, she lived in California.

Mrs. Rates-Higby was a cashier in the gaming industry. She enjoyed sewing, refinishing furniture, garage sales, traveling and helping people.

She was preceded in death by her parents; and brother, Dana Rates.

Among her survivors are her sons Zachariah Rates of Carson City and Lonnie Doyle of Reno; brother Tom Taney of Las Cruces, N.M.; and brother and sister Ed Taney and Michlene Mann, both of Las Vegas

Memorial contributions may be made to St. Mary's Foundation Hospice Fund, 520 W. Sixth St., Reno, NV 89503-9911.
