Jennifer Zeta Thompson

Jennifer Zeta Thompson, 51, passed away Saturday, Aug. 16, 2003, at Highland Manor of Elko due to long term complications of Type 1 diabetes which was diagnosed at age 5.

She was known as Zeta by her family and most of her friends. She was born May 8, 1952, to Billie and Paul Thompson at Elko General Hospital. She grew up and attended school in Elko where she worked in various restaurants. She moved to Utah in the late 1970s where she lived until July 1994, when she moved to Battle Mountain, Nev., to live with her mother as she was no longer able to care for herself due to blindness and other diabetes related problems. In May 2001, she moved into Highland Manor.

Jennifer is survived by her mother, Billie of Battle Mountain; brother, Ray (Betty) Thompson, also to Battle Mountain; sister, Brenda (J) Burdick of Elko; niece, Lena Thompson and nephew, Chris Hanks.

She was preceded in death by her father, Paul.

Final arrangements were by Burns Funeral Home of Elko with no services as she wished.

The family suggests donations be made to: Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation International, 120 Wall Street, New York, N.Y. 10005-4001.

Joseph Alejandro Gabiola

Joseph Alejandro ("Joe") Gabiola passed away Aug. 19, 2003, at St. Mary's Hospital in Reno, Nev., after a brief illness.

He is survived by his beloved wife, Jackie; son and daughter-in-law, Terry and Vicki Gabiola; grandchildren, Philip, Dominic and Danika, all of Winnemucca; granddaughter, Tammie Elges; great-grandchildren, Lukas and Alyssa Elges, all of Reno; sisters, Betty Mueller, of Salt Lake City, Utah, and Elva Mae Bracken of Elko; and numerous nieces, nephews and family members.

His parents and two sisters precede him in death.

Joe was born March 28, 1921, in Elko, Nev., to Alice and Alejandro Gabiola. He was educated in Elko schools. He met and married Jackie Hosking in Elko in 1941 and they enjoyed over 62 years of marriage. The couple moved to Golconda, Nev., where Joe went to work for the mines, both in Golconda and Tungsten. In 1948, he went to work for Russell Drake at the Richfield Oil Bulk Plant in Winnemucca, later purchasing the business and running it in partnership with Pete Bengochea. He sold the business in 1961 and went to work for the Nevada State Highway Department where he remained until his retirement in 1982.

Joe loved hunting, fishing, traveling and his family, all activities that he was able to enjoy until the end of his life. He had over 20 years of retirement and made the best of it, spending lots of time with Jackie and the rest of his family and friends, both at home and on the road.

The John B. Sparks Cremation and Burial Society in Sparks, Nev., are handling cremation. At Joe's request, no funeral is planned, however the family would like friends to stop by the family home. Also, they are invited to join the family for a celebration of Joe's life at noon on Sept. 27, at Paradise Valley, Nev.

In lieu of flowers, the family is requesting that donations be made to the Humboldt County High School Rodeo Club, c/o Kathi Marvel, P.O. Box 44, Paradise Valley, NV 89426.

Stan 'Butch' Maestretti

Stan "Butch" Maestretti, age 74, died Aug. 29, 2003, in Austin, Nev., from injuries he sustained from an accident he had at his garage.

Butch was a lifelong resident of Austin, born Dec. 26, 1928, to Lee and Rene (Acree) Maestretti. He was a graduate of Austin High School. Butch was a heavy equipment operator; he got his first "Cat" at age 17 and worked part-time while he was still in school. Over the years he worked all over Lander and Elko counties, doing reclamation for the mines and also doing road work. Butch had been in the Army for two years - 1951 to 1953. He belonged to Lander Lodge No. 8; he had been a Mason since 1956. He was a Past Master. In his younger years he had been a volunteer with the fire department.

Maestretti is preceded in death by his father and his brother-in-law, Charles Winrod.

He is survived by his wife, Bonnie Maestretti; his mother, Rene Maestretti; son and daughter-in-law, Craig and Carolyn Maestretti; sister, Shirley Winrod, all of Austin; son and daughter-in-law, Lane and Kelly Maestretti, of Minden; grandchildren, Jolene and Donald Noorda of Wells, Nev.; Lori and Josh Christensen of Austin; Bridget Maestretti and Nicholas Maestretti of Minden; great-grandchildren, Haley and Brooke.

In lieu of flowers the family wishes donations be made to Austin High School, attention Athletic Director, 200 Highway 305 N., Austin, NV 89310.

Funeral service will be held Saturday, Sept. 6, 2003, at 1 p.m. at The Town Hall in Austin. Interment will follow at the Austin Cemetery, Masonic Section.

Reception is to follow at The Town Hall.

Blain Edwin Hansen

Blain Edwin Hansen died in Montello, Nev., Sept. 5, 2003. He was born July 26, 1970, to John Edwin and Dorothy Smith Hansen. He was 33 years old and was a lifetime resident of Nevada. Blain was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

He is survived by his mother, Dorothy Hansen, of Montello, Nev., and sister, Mary Lue Lewis, of Wendover, Nev.

Services will be held Wednesday, Sept. 10, 2003, at the Montello Cemetery at 11 a.m. under the direction of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

Burns Funeral Home is handling local arrangements.

Joe A. Souza

Joe A. Souza, 78, died Sept. 7, 2003, at Washoe Medical Center following a lengthy illness.

He was born Aug. 22, 1925, in Lovelock, Nev., to Manuel S. and Marie A. Souza. His family moved to Fallon, Nev., where he attended local schools and joined the Marine Corps fighting in World War II. Following the war, he worked as a surveyor with the State Highway Department, became a professional engineer, and retired after 33 years leaving as the Director of Nevada Highways. Following his retirement, he consulted for various projects in and around the Winnemucca area and in 1993, he and his wife moved to Elko to be near family. He was active in the Knights of Columbus (Third and Fourth Degree), Elks, and Veterans of Foreign Wars, AARP and RPEN.

Survivors include his loving family: wife of 55 years, Jackie, of Elko, Nev.; his son, Joe E. Souza, and his wife, Daythene, of Chula Vista, Calif.; his daughter, Janell Westmoreland, and her husband, Larry, of Elko; his two granddaughters, Angela Marie Westmoreland, of Reno, Nev., and Alicia Ann Westmoreland of Elko; his sister, Helen (Squirt) Burr, and her husband, Louis, of Vancouver, Wash.; his sister-in-law, Joanna Souza, of Hawthorne, Nev.; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents and his brothers: Tony, Manuel and John.

Remembered by many as a kind and gentle man, he had an infectious smile and never met anyone he did not like. At his request, no services are planned and his family asks for your prayers and, in lieu of flowers, that you donate to the charity of your choice in his memory.
