Velva Mae Poland
A memorial service for Velva Mae Poland, 83, a Carson City resident for the past 33 years, will be at 1 p.m. Saturday at the Kingdom Hall of the Jehovah's Witnesses.
Mrs. Poland died Dec. 6, 2004, at Life Care Center in Reno.
She was born Nov. 8, 1921, in Hastings, Neb., to Jesse and Ida Pearl Davison Fetters.
She married George T. Poland April 26, 1938, in Weiser, Idaho. He preceded her in death.
Before moving to Carson City, she lived in Hermiston, Ore., for 30 years.
Mrs. Poland wrote poetry. She was a Jehovah's Witness.
Among her survivors are her husband and son, Theron, both of Carson City; daughters Rosemary Crowder of Hermiston and Valera Vega of Riverside, Calif.; sisters Bertha Volkman of Portland, Ore., and Zela McJunkin of Ontario, Ore.; seven grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
Burial will be at Lone Mountain Cemetery.

Ray Howard Stevens
Ray Howard Stevens, 65, a former Carson City resident, died Nov. 23, 2004, at his home in Alamogordo, N.M.
He was born June 22, 1939, in Goldthwaite, Texas, to Coley Stevens and Helen Eubanks Jackson.
Mr. Stevens was a welder at Blue Mountain Steel in Mound House.
He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers R.C. Stevens and Mel Stevens; sister, Thelma; and grandson Steven Hardwick.
Among his survivors are his significant other, Etta Mae Rhodes of Alamogordo; children Doug Stevens, Vivian Hardwick and Cynthia Stevens, all of Fresno, Calif.; son Richard Wilson of Kingman, Ariz.; daughters Peggy Wilson and Linda Collar, both of Alamogordo; brother Truman Stevens of Beaverton, Idaho; grandchildren Leah Stevens, Steven Hardwick, Derik Hardwick, Bethany Wilson, Mandy Collar and Jake Collar; and one great-grandchild.
No service will be held.
Cremation will be at Memorial Gardens of Santa Teresa, N.M.. Burial will be in the Tulare Cemetery in Tulare, Calif.

Richard Daniel Schofield
A funeral for Richard Daniel Schofield, 86, of Carson City will be at 12:30 p.m. Wednesday at McFarlanes Mortuary in South Lake Tahoe.
Mr. Schofield died Dec. 8, 2004, at home of cancer. He was born Feb. 27, 1918, in Salt Lake City to Clyde and Clara Schofield.
He married Lola on Aug. 24, 1940, at Fallen Leaf Lake near South Lake Tahoe.
Mr. Schofield began his career in the hotel industry at the Hotel Utah in Salt Lake City in 1934. He managed many leading hotels throughout the United States, including in Hawaii. In 1959, he returned to Lake Tahoe to build Schofield's Tah Chalet while working at Harveys.
He was a member of the board of trustees at Barton Memorial Hospital and of the board of Golden Empire Council of Boy Scouts of America. In 1969, he was named Boss of the Year by the Lake of the Sky Chapter National Secretaries Association International. He was involved in many other organizations.
In 1970, he left the Sahara Hotel at Stateline to become vice president and director of operations for all Del Webb hotels in Las Vegas. In 1974, he took a position with ITT Sheraton Corp. as executive vice president and assistant director of Europe, Africa, Middle East and India properties. He traveled extensively and returned to the United States in 1989 to work for the Sheraton in Palm Springs, Calif. He retired and returned to Nevada in 1990.
He served in the U.S. Forestry Engineers from 1943-1946 during World War II. He was a member of the 1612th Eng. Forestry Battalion in the New Guinea campaign and in the Dutch East Indies and the Philippines.
He was preceded in death by his sons Richard Daniel and Michael Morgan and brothers Robert and Reid.
Among his survivors are his wife of Carson City; son Richard Lawrence of Sacramento, Calif.; sister, Claudia Fairbanks of Minden; granddaughter, Heidi Schofield-Reopelle and great-grandchildren James and Jordan Schofield, all of Butte, Mont.; and childhood friend of 81 years, William Dobson of Reno.
Burial will be at Happy Homestead Cemetery.

Jerald W. Remington
A private graveside service for Jerald W. Remington, 88, a Carson City resident for 13 years, will be held 10 a.m. Wednesday at Walton's Carson Gardens Cemetery.
Mr. Remington died Dec. 10, 2004, in Carson City.
He was born Jan. 6, 1916, to Frank and Bessie Remington in Swartz Creek, Mich.
Mr. Remington graduated from Flint Central High School in 1934, and in 1935, attended Flint Junior College, where he was a member of Phi Lambda Epsilon.
He held executive positions at Smith-Corona, General Motors, Birelys, Taylor Industries and General Foods. He started Remington International in Covina, Calif., and retired in 1994.
He was preceded in death by his wife, June, in 1994.
Among his survivors are daughter and son-in-law Joan Remington-Seymour and Ken Seymour of Carson City; grandchildren Patricia Santiago of Carson City and Kenson Seymour of Dayton; and three great-grandchildren.

Clark Gyolas
Clark Gyolas, 83, a Carson City resident for the past 12 years, died Dec. 1, 2004, at home. He was born Dec. 26, 1921, in Chicago to Andrew Clark and Jean Draper Gyolas.
Mr. Gyolas retired after working 32 years at the telephone company. He served in the U.S. Air Force for three years.
Among his survivors are his wife, Mary, of Carson City; six children; 16 grandchildren; and 16 great-grandchildren.
No service will be held. Cremation will be at FitzHenry's Crematory.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Carson City Senior Center.

Margaret Edmundson
Margaret Edmundson, 57, died Nov. 4, 2004, of neurosarcoidosis.
She was preceded in death by her father, Al Edmundson.
She graduated from Carson High School in 1965 and the University of Nevada, Reno with a degree in nursing in 1969, received a master's degree in nursing, maternal-child health from Emory University in 1972, and in 1977, was awarded a certificate of nurse-midwifery from State University of New York.
Mrs. Edmundson taught at the University of Colorado and Arizona State University and published numerous articles. Her greatest enjoyment was delivering babies. She and her colleague, Betty Jennings, were pioneer nurse-midwives in Colorado in the 1970s.
Among her survivors are her husband, William E. "Bill" Armstrong; son, Spencer; stepsons Bill Jr. and Brian; granddaughters Makay and Skyelar; mother, Mabel Edmundson; sisters Mary Gomez, Martha Edmundson and Minnie Inzer Muniz; and numerous nieces and nephews.
A celebration of life was held in Denver.

Ethyl Sparks
Ethyl Sparks, 83, a Carson City resident for the past three years, died Dec. 3, 2004, in Reno.
Mrs. Sparks was born March 26, 1921, in Spanish Fork, Utah, to James Arthur and Martha Isabel Ferris Williams.
She married Henry Sparks. He preceded her in death.
Among her survivors are her sisters Edythe Long of Carson City and Jean W. Lesser of Napa, Calif.
Cremation will be at Walton's Sierra Crematory.

Marie Valerie Kish Gunderson
Marie Valerie Kish Gunderson, 96, died Nov. 29, 2004, at Evergreen Health and Rehabilitation in Gardnerville. She was born July 4, 1908, in Omaha, Neb., to Anton and Teresa Hessner Kish.
She attended high school in Boise, Idaho, before moving back to Omaha. She formed a dance band while in high school an played the piano for dances. She was a member of ROTC.
She married Robert S. Gunderson in 1932 in Omaha.
Before moving to Gardnerville, she lived in Fresno, Calif., and the Los Angeles area, moving to Nevada in 1955.
Mrs. Gunderson worked in many positions, mainly in the accounting field. After her husband died during World War II, she went to work as an armed guard at the Glenn L. Martin B-29 plant in Omaha.
In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by her infant son, Stanley; and brothers John and Frank Kish.
Among her survivors are her daughter and son-in-law, Donna and John Leveck of Gardnerville; nieces Rae Ann Kish Marx of Coarsegold, Calif., and Judee Kish Richey of Monterey, Calif.; nephew, Louis Kish of Morgan Hill, Calif.; sister-in-law, Amber Kish of Monterey; and five cousins.
A family celebration of life will be at a later date.
She was entombed Dec. 3 at Eastside Memorial Park in Minden.

William Mark 'Bill' Thomas
A funeral for William Mark "Bill" Thomas, 49, a Gardnerville resident for the past 14 years, will be at 2 p.m. Thursday at the Dayspring Christian Assembly, 974 Tillman Lane, Gardnerville.
Mr. Thomas died Dec. 2, 2004, in Gardnerville.
He was born May 24, 1955, in Burbank, Calif., to William R. and Jean Larson Thomas.
He married Diana Hampton Sept. 21, 1980, in Burbank.
Before moving to Gardnerville, he lived in Burbank.
Mr. Thomas was a member of the Elks Lodge of Gardnerville, the Citizens Patrol of the Douglas County Sheriff and a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post of Burbank.
Mr. Thomas enjoyed the outdoors, especially fishing, hunting and camping, people and the St. Louis Rams.
He served in the U.S. Navy during the Vietnam War.
He was preceded in death by his mother.
Among his survivors are his wife of Gardnerville; son and daughter-in-law Billy and Ashley of Gardnerville; son Bobby of Reno; daughter and son-in-law Luwana and Mario Ferguson of Van Nuys, Calif.; daughter Rebecca Thomas of South Lake Tahoe; father of South Lake Tahoe; brother, Bob Elliott of Portland, Ore.; sister, Dawn Elliott of Anaheim, Calif.; grandchildren Daniel Ferguson, Ivy Rose Barkdoll and Amber Evelyn Barkdoll; and niece Janie Mandell.
Burial will be in the Happy Homestead Cemetery at South Lake Tahoe.
