Joyce. V. Monti

A funeral service for Joyce V. Monti, 72, a Carson City resident for three years, will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Walton's Chapel of the Valley. She died Nov. 26, 2004, in Carson City. She was born April 9, 1932, in Cottondale, Fla., to Morrell C. and Anna Mae Reed.

Mrs. Monti moved to Carson City from Hayward, Calif. She enjoyed arts and crafts, reading, music and gardening.

She was preceded in death by her son, Victor, in 2001 and brother, Alvin Reed, in 1999.

Among her survivors are her husband, John, of 54 years, of Carson City; daughters Pamela Steed of Paradise, Calif., and Laura Monti of Carson City; son, Mark, of Escondido, Calif.; sister, Mavis Klein of Hollywood, Md., and four grandchildren.

Burial will be in Walton's Carson Gardens Cemetery.

Walton's Chapel of the Valley is in charge of arrangements.

Lloyd W. Mills

Lloyd W. Mills, 77, died Nov. 19, 2004, at his home in Wellington, after a month-long illness.

Mr. Mills was born July 27, 1927, in Muskegon, Mich., to Charles and Nora Mills. He served in the U.S. Navy on the USS Plaice, SS-390 from 1945 to 1948. He returned to Muskegon to attend Rensselaer Polytechnic to study civil engineering, and he also became a home builder.

He was preceded in death by his wife, June Mills, who lost her battle with cancer in 1987.

Mr. Mills lived in Seal Beach, Calif., from 1963-1990, and worked as a civil engineer during those years in Long Beach and Pasadena, Calif. He built homes in Bermuda Dunes, Calif., and Idyllwild, Calif., before moving to Gardnerville in 2000.

In August 2001 at the age of 75, he broke ground in Wellington to construct a straw-bale house powered entirely by solar panels. He had great pride in constructing this straw-bale solar house as an owner/builder. He loved sharing his knowledge of building and design, and spending time with his grandchildren. He accepted Jesus Christ into his life in 2002.

Mr. Mills is survived by his brother, Jack Mills, of Virginia Beach, S.C.; and his five children, Debbie Mills, Huntington Beach, Calif.; Greg Mills, Newport Beach, Calif.; Randy Mills, Surfside, Calif.; Vicki Mills, Utah; Brad Mills, Huntington Beach, Calif., and six grandchildren, Amethyst, Ashlee, Nicole, Brittney, Gregory, Rachel, and three great-grandchildren.

A small memorial was held in his home in Wellington on Sunday. Cremation has taken place according to his request. In lieu of flowers, please pray for peace and good health care for all in this world.

Arrangements were in the care of FitzHenry's Carson Valley Funeral Home in Gardnerville.

Quinnie E. McCarty

A funeral for Quinnie E. McCarty, 77, a Carson City resident for the past 36 years, will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday at Walton's Chapel of the Valley.

Visitation will be from 8:30-10:30 a.m. Monday at Walton's.

Mrs. McCarty died Nov. 23, 2004, in Carson City.

She was born Nov. 6, 1927, in Durango, Colo., to Robert and Ellie Byrd.

She married Dewey McCarty.

Before moving to Carson City, she lived in East Moline, Ill.

Mrs. McCarty was a homemaker. She enjoyed crafting, ceramics, quilting, crocheting, embroidering and traveling, especially visiting Hawaii.

She was preceded in death by her brothers Malcolm Byrd and Melvin Byrd.

Among her survivors are her husband of 58 years of Carson City; sons and daughter-in-laws David McCarty and Petrina McCarty-Puhl of Reno and Jim and Wendy McCarty of Boone, Iowa; daughter and son-in-law, Linda and Albert Uhart of Carson City; brother, Robert Byrd of Oregon; nine grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

Burial will be at Sierra Memorial Cemetery in Reno.

Walton's Chapel of the Valley is in charge of arrangements.

Gerald Frank Himmelsbach

Gerald Frank Himmelsbach, 66, a 35-year Carson City resident, died Nov. 24, 2004.

Mr. Himmelsbach was born Feb. 10, 1938, in Los Angeles to Jack and Lavona Bishop Himmelsbach.

He was raised in Los Angeles and retired from the Department of Transportation after 25 years.

Among his survivors are his wife, Kathy of Carson City; son, John of Carson City; daughters Debbie Haworth of Las Vegas and Pamela Asis and Bonnie Borgman, both of Carson City; and grandchildren Gerald and Stephanie Himmelsbach, Max and Katie Borgman and Jeromy Asis.

Cremation will be at FitzHenry's Funeral Home. FitzHenry's Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

James A. Swindle

James A. Swindle, 86, a Gardnerville resident for the past 27 years, died Nov. 20, 2004, at Carson-Tahoe Hospital.

He was born Dec. 24, 1917, in Stratford, Okla., to Alfred and Dessa Golden Swindle.

He married Barbara Lemore Aug. 1, 1970, in Carson City.

Before moving to Gardnerville, he lived in Orange County, Calif.

Mr. Swindle owned and operated Bar J Enterprise, selling new and used machinery. He was a member of the Pony Express, the Sertoma Club and the National Rifle Association. He enjoyed riding horses and football. He was an avid hunter and fisherman. He was a member of the Carson Valley Methodist Church in Gardnerville.

He was preceded in death by numerous brothers and sisters.

Among his survivors are his wife and mother-in-law Faye Panetta, both of Gardnerville; stepson and wife, Mark and Bette Lemore of California; daughters Janice Russell, Susan Wood and Jill Dobyns, all of California; stepdaughters Laura Kusek and husband, Dennis, and Kristy Lemore of California; nephew David Alfson of Bullhead City, Ariz.; a sister; 18 grandchildren; and 19 great-grandchildren.

No service will be held.

Memorial contributions may be made to St. Mary's Foundation Hospice Fund, 520 W. Sixth St., Reno, NV 89503-9911.

Capitol City Cremation & Burial Society is in charge of arrangements.

Alfred Richard Silva

A memorial service for Alfred Richard Silva, 75, a Carson City resident for 33 years, will be at 3 p.m. Wednesday at FitzHenry's Funeral Home, followed by an Eagles ceremony and reception at the Eagles Lodge, 1380 E. Fifth St.

Mr. Silva died Nov. 21, 2004, at his home. He was born Nov. 22, 1928, in Santa Clara, Calif., to Joaquin and Emily Silva.

He graduated from Santa Clara High School and received his trade certificate from the California Apprenticeship Council.

Before moving to Carson City, he lived in Los Gatos, Calif.

Mr. Silva opened a custom cabinet shop, AC Mfg., in Carson City in 1971. Before retiring in 1995, he and his wife owned and operated Carson City Locksmith for two years and he worked as a salesman for Valley Chevrolet. He was a member of the Carson City Elks Lodge 2177; Past President of Carson Aerie 1006, Fraternal Order of Eagles and a former member of Carson City Rotary.

He served in the U.S. Navy for six years, including active duty on the USS Wedderburn during the Korean War.

Among his survivors are his wife, Sherie; son and daughter-in-law Brett and Connie Silva of Lincolnton, N.C.; son, Casey Smith of Livermore, Calif.; daughters and sons-in-law Nancy Silva and Dan Sutton of Granite Bay, Calif., Karen and David Hamlin of Dayton and Kerri and Chip Anderson of Livermore; and grandchildren Lilli, Logan, Cole, Macy, Isabelle, Emily, Jonathan, Haley, Kelsey, Andrew, Dustin and Griffin.

Memorial contributions may be made to Barton HealthCare System, Hospice of the Valley, 1617 Water St., Suite K, Minden, NV 89423.

FitzHenry's Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

John Carl Vogt

John Carl Vogt, 87, a Carson City resident for the past 20 years, died Nov. 17, 2004, in Carson City. He was born Aug. 2, 1917, in Brooklyn, N.Y., to Herman and Mildred Terry Vogt.

Before moving to Carson City, he lived in California.

Mr. Vogt was a baker. He enjoyed fishing.

He served in the U.S. Army during World War II.

Among his survivors are his brother and sister-in-law, Herbert and Frances of Oceanside, Calif.; sister and brother-in-law Margaret and Robert Wolfe of San Marcus, Calif.; and nieces Diane Darnell and Karen Gilligan and nephew Glenn Vogt, all of California.

No service is scheduled.

Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society.

Walton's Chapel of the Valley is in charge of arrangements.

Herman Otto Ogle

Herman Otto Ogle, 79, a Yerington resident for the past 30 years, died Dec. 24, 2004, at the South Lyon Medical Center in Yerington. He was born May 2, 1925, in Terre Haute, Ind., to Charles and Ida Robertson Ogle.

Mr. Ogle owned and operated the garbage-disposal business in the Yerington area.

He served in the Army National Guard.

He was preceded in death by his brother Charles and sisters Susan, Norma Jean and Mary May.

Among his survivors are his brother Thurman of Long Beach, Calif.; nieces Nancy and Laura of California and Helen of Oklahoma; and several great nieces and nephews, including Tammy Veteran and Troy Watson.

A memorial service will be at a later date. Cremation will take place, and his cremains will be buried in the Valley View Cemetery with military honors.

Freitas Rupracht Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Billy Thomas

A memorial service for Billy Thomas, 21, a Gardnerville resident for the past 15 years, will be at 4:30 p.m. Thursday at High Sierra Fellowship Church, 1316 Highway 395 S., Gardnerville.

Mr. Thomas died Dec. 26, 2004, in Gardnerville. He was born Feb. 26, 1983, in Burbank, Calif., to William M. and Diana Hampton Thomas.

He attended schools in Gardnerville.

He married Ashley M. Barnett on June 6, 2004, in Gardnerville.

Before moving to Gardnerville, he lived in Burbank.

Mr. Thomas had been a cabinetmaker for Sunshine Construction Co. in Gardnerville for the past 10 months. He loved the outdoors, especially hunting and fishing. He attended High Sierra Fellowship Church.

He was preceded in death by his father in December 2004.

Among his survivors are his wife and mother, both of Gardnerville; sister and brother-in-law Luwana and Mario Ferguson of Van Nuys, Calif.; sister Rebecca Thomas of South Lake Tahoe; brother, Bobby of Reno; and cousin, Josh Hampton of Burbank.

Cremation will be at Walton's Sierra Crematory.

Douglas County Mortuary is in charge of arrangements.
