Arthur Smart

Services for Arthur Eldon Smart, 72, who died Aug. 20 in Pahrump, will be held at the Southern Nevada Veterans Memorial cemetery, Boulder City.

He was born April 18, 1928, in Boston.

He served in the U.S. Marine Corps, then worked as a carpenter.

He was a Christian and a one-month resident of Pahrump. (8/20/00)

Edna Wahlen

Private services have been held for Edna M. Wahlen, 72, who died Sept. 8, 2000 in Las Vegas.

She was born Dec. 22, 1927, in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada.

She was the owner/operator of an RV park, a resident of Pahrump, and a 52-year resident of Nevada.

Her husband, William of Pahrump, daughter Stacie Stevenson of Pahrump, son Bill of California, two sisters and three grandchildren survive her. (9/8/00)

James Howes

Private family services have been held for James E. "Jim" Howes, 61, who died Sept. 20, 2000 in a Henderson hospital.

He was born Oct. 11, 1938, in Parkersburg, W.V.

He served in the U.S. Navy, then worked as a distribution manager for Ben Franklin stores for 39 years before retiring.

He came to Pahrump a year ago from California.

Wife Libby of Pahrump, son David of Ft. Smith, Ark., daughter Cassie Davis of Garden Grove, Calif., brother Bill of Akron, Ohio, sister Maryjo Ball of Akron, and six grandchildren survive him. (9/10/00)

LoLita Erskine
Died August 7, 2000
Services for Lolita Lucille Erskine, 75, who died Aug. 7 in Las Vegas, will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday in the Pahrump Family Mortuary chapel.

Visitation will be from 1 to 2 p.m.

She was born April 13, 1925, in Kansas City, Mo.

She worked as a cosmetologist and came to Pahrump from California in 1993.

She will be remembered as a devoted wife, mother, grandmother and friend.

Husband Earl of Pahrump, daughter Rea Duncan of Pahrump, sons Steve of Las Vegas and Corky of Newark, Calif., brothers Frank Storey of San Diego and Joseph Duncan, three grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren and four great-great-grandchildren survive her. (8/7/00)

Claude Edward "Curly" Roberts
Died August 7, 2000

A memorial service for Claude Edward "Curly" Roberts, 78, who died Aug. 7 in Las Vegas, will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday in the Pahrump Moose Lodge.

Burial will be at a later date.

He was born Jan. 25, 1922, in Smithville, Miss.

He served in the U.S. Navy, then worked as a paint sprayer for Chrysler Automotive before retiring.

He enjoyed the outdoors, gardening, fishing and hunting, and was affiliated with the Moose Lodge, VFW Post 10056, United Autoworkers Local 72 and AARP.

He was a Christian.

He came to Pahrump in 1982.

His wife of 39 years, Jacqueline of Pahrump, son Jim of Racine, Wisc., daughters Kathleen Patla of Burlington, Wisc., and Patricia Cooper of Pahrump, two brothers, two sisters, eight grandchildren and five great-grandchildren survive him.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Mooseheart or Moosehaven. (8/7/00)

Donald Westra
Died August 7, 2000
A memorial service for Donald Peter Westra, 87, who died Aug. 7 in Las Vegas, will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday in the Pahrump Community Church with Pastor Dick Bauer officiating.

A celebration of life service will be held at 4 p.m. Saturday at the Neptune Society Chapel with the Masonic Lodge and Eastern Star officiating.

He will be buried at the Southern Nevada Veterans Memorial cemetery, Boulder City, in a ceremony for family members only.

He was born June 29, 1923, in Randolph, Wis.

He served in the U.S. Navy, then worked in the aircraft industry as a machinist instructor.

He belonged to the Masonic Lodge Eastern Star, and enjoyed woodworking and traveling throughout the U.S. and Canada.

He is survived by his wife of 56 years, Helen of Pahrump, four sons, John of Idaho, James of Flagstaff, Ariz., Robert of Pahrump and Allen of Panorama City, Calif.; four daughters, Kathleen of Ventura, Calif., Sandra David of Las Vegas, Jane of California City, Calif., and Pauline Dean of Reseda, CA.

Ronald Gotshall
Died July 21,2000

A memorial service for Ronald E. Gotshall Sr., 64, who died July 21 at Golden Shores, Ariz., will be held at 11 a.m. Aug. 26 at VFW Post 6306, Golden Shores.

He was born Dec. 25, 1935, in Youngstown, Ohio.

He retired from the U.S. Navy in 1984 after 30 years of service, and lived in Pahrump after retiring before moving to Golden Shores 11 years ago.

He was a member of the American Legion, Fleet Reserve Assn. and a life member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars.

His wife, Lynn of Golden Shores; three sons, David of Titusville, Fla., Ronald Jr. of San Diego and Robert of San Antonio; two daughters, Rhonda Ceremony of Vacaville, Calif., and Sally Reed of Pahrump; and two grandsons survive him. (7/21/00)

Bee Douglas
Died Aug. 4, 2000

Bee Douglas, 84, died Aug. 4 in a Las Vegas hospital.

She was born May 13, 1916, in Squalicum Creek Bellingham, Wash.

She was a homemaker and a member of the Eagles Auxiliary in Seattle.

She was an eight-year resident of Pahrump.

She is survived by a daughter, Lucrezia Cudby-Lembke of Pahrump; three sons, Frank Mandarano of Mercer Island, Wash., Robert Damery of Auburn, Wash., and Michael Douglas of Woodward, Okla.; 20 grandchildren; and 15 great-grandchildren. (8/4/00)

Charles Bishop

The driver of a tractor-trailer that collided with a double gasoline tanker in a fiery crash on U.S. 95 in Las Vegas on Aug. 2 has died.

Charles Bishop, 53, died Aug. 22, 2000 at University Medical Center, where he remained in critical condition since the accident.

Bishop's ultimately fatal injury was the most serious sustained among those involved in the accident.

Two passengers in the tractor-trailer, Ronald Beal and David Hill, also from Pahrump, were treated and released.

Herman Lockeby, the driver of the tanker, sustained a broken arm.

The crash occurred when a tire mounted on a tractor-trailer being towed by Bishop shredded, causing Bishop to cut into Lockeby's lane.

Shortly after the collision the tanker exploded, sending plumes of smoke and fire into the sky and stopping traffic in both lanes for several hours.

Bishop worked for Morgan Drive Away, one of the country's top haulers of manufactured homes. The Elkhart, Ind., company has a subsidiary in Pahrump.

John Ferry

Services for John Michael Ferry, 34, who died Aug. 20 in Pahrump, will be held at 1 p.m. today at the Resurrection cemetery, Montebello, Calif.

He was born Dec. 3, 1965 in Los Angeles.

He worked as a bartender in a restaurant, and was a one-year resident of Furnace Creek, Calif., coming from the north rim of the Grand Canyon, Ariz.

He is survived by girlfriend Chanel Glass of Death Valley, Calif.; a brother, James; a sister, Patricia Bogle of Temple City, Calif.; and nephew Ryan Bogle. (8/20/00)

Elmer Blum

Private services have been held for Elmer H. Blum, 92, who died July 30 in Las Vegas.

He was born Oct. 20, 1907, in Iowa. He served in the U.S. Army, then was self-employed as a limousine driver before retiring 30 years ago.

He belonged to the Catholic Church.

Life-long friends Mary and Pamela Carr of Pahrump survive him. (7/30/00

Mary Davis
Date of death: May 16, 2000
A memorial service for Mary Lynch Davis, 80, who died May 3 following a brief illness, was held May 16 in Beatty Funeral services were held May 8 at St. Joseph, Mo.

She was a native of St Joseph and attended elementary and high school there.

She served in the U.S. Navy in Atlanta, Chicago and Washington, D.C., during World War II, then worked for 25 years as a secretary for St. Joseph Light and Power Co. before retiring in 1983.

She moved to Amargosa in 1990 to live with her daughter and son-in-law, and in 1996 she married Bill Davis of Beatty.

She was active in the Beatty Senior Center, was a founding member of Friends of Rhyolite, and belonged to the Church of Latter Day Saints in Beatty.

In addition to her husband, daughter Kari (Richard) Coughlin of Amargosa, her brother Bill of Joplin, Mo., and nieces and nephews survives her.
