Martin McClay

Died July 28, 2001

Martin Eugene McClay, 76, died July 28.

He was born Dec. 27, 1924, to Elmer and Effie McClay in Altadena, Calif., and grew up in Azusa, Calif. He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II aboard the destroyer USS Radford, and also served in the Korean War with the 817th Engineers. He was employed in government service until he retired in 1983, and he moved to Pahrump that year.

He and his wife Betty were active members of Pahrump Community Church, and both served as missionaries for 16 years in construction and repair of Christian facilities throughout the United States with the Mobile Missionary Assistance Program.

Betty, his wife of 55 years, sons Bruce of Concord, Calif., Wayne of Pine Grove, Calif., Patrick of Modesto, Calif., daughter Karen Hatfield of Las Vegas, seven grandchildren and five great-grandchildren survive him.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Pahrump Community Church, P.O. Box 280, Pahrump 89041, or the Mobile Missionary Assistance.

Margaret Vawter

Died July 24, 2001

Margaret A. Vawter, 93, died July 24 in Pahrump.

She was born July 25, 1907, in Oakland, Calif. She worked as a county assessor before retiring, and came to Pahrump seven years ago from Sun City, Calif.

Daughter Alice Ganger of Pahrump, one grandchild and one great-grandchild survive her. Husband Robert preceded her in death. (7/30/01)

Vincent Adams

Died July 24, 2001

Private family services have been held for Vincent John Adams, 78, who died July 24 in Las Vegas.

He was born Jan. 12, 1923, in Port Vue, Pa. He served in the U.S. Army, then worked as a mechanical engineer in the aerospace industry. He was a Christian, a member of the VFW and a Mason, and enjoyed traveling in his RV, fishing, telling jokes and his grandchildren. He came to Pahrump from Knoxville, Tenn., in 1989.

Wife Geraldine of Pahrump, son Tracy (Cathy) of Tracy, Calif., daughter Vicki (Mark) Reisenfeld of Eldorado Hills, Calif., brother Joseph of Colorado, sisters Evelyn Findley of Virginia and Sylvia Arcangelini of Ohio and five grandchildren survive him.

Neptune Society of Nye County handled the arrangements. (7/24/01)

Fred Cheffer

Died July 24, 2001

Services for Fred Cheffer, 81, who died July 24 in Las Vegas, will be held at 10 a.m. Aug. 15 in the Neptune Society Chapel with Pastor Bob Lewis officiating.

He was born Jan. 25, 1920, in Kankakee, Ill. He worked as a manufacturing engineer in the aerospace industry and came to Pahrump from Santa Ana, Calif., in 1985. He was a Methodist and a member of Masons, Eagles, Moose and the PV Squares.

Wife Beulah of Pahrump, sons Kim (Sue) of Everett, Wash., and Bruce (Jennifer) of Newport Beach, Calif., daughter Linda Marten of Pahrump, brothers William of Kankakee, Robert of East Moline, Ill., and John Butler of Orange, Calif., sister Beatrice Bass of Kankakee, eight grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren survive him.

Neptune Society of Nye County handled the arrangements. (7/24/01)

Olga Loncar

Died July 25, 2001

Graveside services for Olga Loncar, 85, who died July 25 at Tonopah, were held Monday in the Goldfield cemetery.

She was born Oct. 15, 1915, in Arrow, Ore. She was a resident of Tonopah since 1967, and previously lived in Reno, Goldfield, Ely and Fallon. She worked as a restaurant waitress. She was a member of the Order of the Eastern Star at Tonopah, and belonged to the Serbian Orthodox Church.

Son George Gumbmann of Goldfield, daughter Mary Mammola of White Plains, N.Y., brothers Peter of Montrose, Colo., John of Hemet, Calif., and Robert of Tonopah, sisters Xenia Baird of Goldfield and Sophia Dietrick of Menafee, Calif., eight grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren survive her. Jon Berry

Died Oct. 19, 2001

Private family services will be held for Jon Glenn Berry, 46, who died Oct. 19 in Pahrump.

He was born Aug. 7, 1955, in Inglewood, Calif. He came to Pahrump three years ago from Washington, worked in the automotive industry, and was a Christian. He enjoyed working on and restoring automobiles and fishing.

Grandmother Francis Wilson of Twin Falls, Idaho, parents Raymond Berry of Rolling Hills, Calif., and Barbara Lemire of Twin Falls, daughters Sharon of Sioux City, Iowa, and Jessica of Henderson, brothers Michael of Lafayette, La., and Brennan of Redondo, Calif., sister Heather of Redondo, and one grandchild survive him. John Burnett

Died Oct. 20, 2001

Funeral services for John Joseph Burnett, 47, who died Oct. 20 in Pahrump, will be held at Worcester, Mass.

He was born May 16, 1954, in Worcester. He served in the Navy during the Vietnam War, belonged to the American Legion, worked in manufacturing as an inventory manager, and belonged to the Catholic Church. He enjoyed fishing, classic rock music, watching sports, and was an avid Boston Red Sox fan. He was an 18-year resident of Pahrump and Las Vegas.

Grandmother Anna of Crossville, Tenn., mother Cecile of Worcester, daughter Jennifer of Worcester, brother Lewis of Crossville, and sister Laura Berthiaume of Worcester.

In lieu of flowers the family asks that donations be made in his name to the American Heart Assn. (10/20/01)

Norma Hohn

Died Oct. 21, 2001

Services for Norma Lee Hohn, 68, who died Oct. 21 in Pahrump, will be held at a later date in the Southern Nevada Veterans Memorial cemetery, Boulder City.

She was born Dec. 29, 1932, in Missouri. She was a retired nursing assistant, a Christian, a member of the VFW Ladies Auxiliary, and enjoyed crafts and bingo. She published a cookbook she had written. She came to Pahrump from South Dakota in 1997.

Son Vayne Ray of Las Vegas and one grandchild survive her. Her husband Adrian preceded her in death, in 1996. (10/21/01)

Martin Howard

Died Oct. 19, 2001

Services for Martin Ivel Howard, 84, who died Oct. 19 in Pahrump, will be held at 1 p.m. today in Palm Mortuary, Main St., Las Vegas. Visitation will be from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.

He was born Oct. 19, 1916, in Loogo Ottie, Ind. He served in the Army Air Corps, then worked for the civil service as a fabrication specialist before retiring. He belonged to the Catholic Church, was a member of the VFW, and enjoyed golf and bowling, creating art works and creating inventions.

He came to Pahrump in August from Las Vegas, where he had resided since 1957.

Son Gene of Pahrump, daughters Ethel Scott of Blue Diamond and Carol Robinson of las Vegas, sister Betty of Tulsa, eight grandchildren and two great-grandchildren survive him. (10/17/01)

Orland Setzkorn

Died Oct. 2, 2001

Graveside services for Orland Setzkorn, 80, who died Oct. 2 in Pahrump, will be held at 5 p.m. today in Grandview cemetery, 5441 S. Vicki Ann.

He was born June 6, 1921, in Kansas. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II, then worked as a restaurant cook before retiring 15 years ago. A Lutheran, he came to Pahrump 20 years ago from Kansas.

Wife Dorothy of Pahrump, sons Darrel of Pahrump and Galen of Phoenix, Daughter Deane Lusenby of Liberal, Kan., 12 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren survive him. (10/2/01)

Sammy Jones Jr.

Died October 5, 2001

Services for Sammy Jones Jr., 31, who died Oct 5 in a Las Vegas hospital, were held Oct. 9 at Palm Mortuary-Eastern.

He was born Aug. 3, 1970, in Springfield, Ill. He was an air conditioning technician and a 13-year resident of Pahrump. He was a member of AFAN of Nevada.

Parents Kathy and Sam of Las Vegas, sisters Deborah Olson of Las Vegas and Toni Bawden of Pahrump, brother Earl of Las Vegas, grandmother Rita McCarty of Springfield, and grandfather James Spencer of Taylorville, Ill., survive him. (10/5/01)

Thelma Pixley

Died Oct. 7, 2001

Services for Thelma "Jean" Pixley, 78, who died Oct. 7 in Pahrump, will be held at noon Saturday in the Masonic Memorial Temple, 271 Gemini, Pahrump.

She was born June 25, 1923, in Bisbee, Ariz. She came to Pahrump from Las Vegas in 1978, and worked as a casino cage manager. She belonged to the Presbyterian Church and was in the Order of the Eastern Star, where she was a past chaplain.

She is survived by Byron, her husband of 60 years, son Daniel of Las Vegas, daughters Donna (Jack) Sharp of Pahrump and Lynn (Forrest) Cameron of Turner, Ore., brother John Fraizer of Phoenix, 12 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.

Neptune Society of Nye County was in charge of arrangements. (10/7/01)

Donald Kennedy

Died Sept. 30, 2001

Private services have been held for Donald P. Kennedy, 73, who died Sept. 30 in Pomona, Calif.

He was born May 4, 1928 in East Liverpool, Ohio. He was a retired marketing director and came to Pahrump from California 10 years ago. He enjoyed camping, traveling and all of his grandchildren. He loved the desert and Pahrump, and attended dozens of town board meetings until July 24, when he returned to California for medical treatment.

He was preceded in death by brother Richard, son Donald, and parents Curtis and Bessie.

Regina, his wife of 43 years of Pahrump, son Randall (Colleen) of LaVerne, Calif.; daughter Lee Border of Tennessee; daughter in law Lila Csortos of Ohio, brother Robert of Ohio, sister Donna Ziehl of Arizona; grandsons Patrick of California, Brian, Kevin, and Keith Kennedy of Ohio; Shawn Taylor of Florida, granddaughters Kristen E. Kennedy of California; Kathleen Kaplan of Florida; and several nieces and nephews survive him.

Samuel Stokley

Died: January 4, 2001

No services were held for Samuel Stokley, 77, who died Jan. 4.

He was born Sept. 18, 1923, in Bishop, Calif.

He is survived by children Renee Rubinger and Daniel Longworth, both of Las Vegas, and sister Laura of Bishop.

In lieu of flowers the family asks that donations in his name be made to the American Cancer Society. (1/4/01)

Joseph Keller

Died: January 17, 2001

Services for Joseph John Keller, 63, who died Jan. 17 in Pahrump, will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday in the Pahrump Family Mortuary chapel. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. today in the chapel.

He was born July 31, 1937, in Milwaukee. He worked as an automotive machinist and came to Pahrump from Wisconsin three years ago. He was a member of a senior baseball club, an avid bingo player, and belonged to the Catholic Church.

Wife Georgia of Pahrump, sons Joseph Jr. (Sherry) of Wisconsin and Robert (Linda) of Pahrump, stepsons Steven (Karen) Wall and Randy (Jackie) Wall, both of Wisconsin, sister Josephine Pittman of Texas and 13 grandchildren survive him. (1/17/01)
