Bernice N. Romine

A very special and beautiful woman, Bernice N. Romine, of Elko, Nev., passed away on Oct. 22, 2003, of natural causes. Bernice was 83 years of age. During all of her adult life she had devoted herself to loving, guiding and supporting her family, assisting and sharing with her friends, and demonstrating dignity and professionalism in her personal and professional life.

Bernice is survived by her brothers, Richard and Robert Greene, of Denver, Colo.; her sons and their families, Donald Napoles of Elko, John Napoles and Sylvia Silvia of Highlands, Calif., and Robert and Sarah Napoles of Tucson, Ariz.; and five grandchildren and their families, Shane and Cris Napoles, Shalya and Gary French, Kimberly and T.J. Offord, Kelly and Danny Napoles-Zavala, and Isaac Napoles.

Bernice Romine had struggled with medical complications for a number of years, but through all of that she remained confident, positive and enthusiastic. She was a remarkable woman known for her charming personality, radiant smile, engaging laughter, and loving spirit, and she will be missed more than words can possibly describe.

A memorial service will be held for Bernice Romine, Sunday, Oct. 26, at 3 p.m. at the Burns Funeral Home, Burns Road and Fairgrounds Road, Elko, Nev.

Josephine Gonzales

Josephine Gonzales, 60 years old, died Oct. 26, 2003, of a long battle with cancer. She was born Feb. 4, 1943, in Elko, Nev.

She is survived by her sisters, Veronica Mendive and Vera Gonzales of Elko; sister, Delores Dickson, of Willard, Utah; brothers, Albert of Elko and Gasper of Filer, Idaho; and many nieces and nephews survive her.

She was preceded in death by her father, Joseph Gonzales; her mother, Clara Marin.

Josephine had a full and colorful life. She left Elko in 1965 to enter into the Franciscan Sisters of the Sacred Heart, whose motherhouse was in Mokena, Ill.

She attended De Paul University where she graduated with a double major. She taught school outside Fort Wayne, Ind., for a year. She then worked as an hospital social worker intern in San Francisco. After leaving the convent after almost six years, she came back to Elko to become a supervisor for a Nevada nonprofit agency. When the agency went defunct she accepted employment with Inter-Tribal of Nevada. She was hired as a community health representative (CHR),became the supervisor for northeast Nevada and then eventually became the director of the program and relocated to Reno. Later she was named chief of the ITC health program. Josephine continued to climb the ladder of success in the ITC organization. She became deputy director of the statewide organization and, ultimately, the executive director. She took great pride in being the first woman and non-Indian executive director.

During her tenure with Inter-Tribal, Josephine became an active community activist for the Hispanic community in the Reno and Carson City areas. She became the first chairman of the board for the Latinos. She was instrumental in getting funds for the first time in history from the local government of the City of Reno and the Washoe County Commissioners.

Josephine was very involved politically. She was a member of the Washoe County Democratic party. She represented Nevada at the National Democratic Convention in New York City. She attended the inauguration of President Jimmy Carter. Josephine was named one of a handful of women in the state from Washington to organize a Committee for International Women's Year. Later Josephine was named the fiscal officer of the state committee. At the state convention in Las Vegas she was voted number one among a handful of delegates to represent Nevada in Houston, Texas. Josephine sat on numerous state and local committees. She was appointed by Gov. Dick Bryan to the State Board of CETA (Comprehensive Employment Training Act). She served for six years. She also chaired the Washoe County CETA Committee. She also chaired the N.E. Mental Health Advisory Board, appointed by Gov. Robert List.

Josephine also managed 7-11 stores. She became the first manager of a corporate store to earn a percent of the profits.

Josephine also worked for the Community College of Western Nevada where she supervised and directed English as a second language program, Single Part Program and Adult Basic Education programs.

When Josephine came home to retire, she found she could not remain idle so she worked part-time for Domino's Pizza until her illness.

Funeral services are scheduled for Thursday, Oct. 30, at 10 a.m. at St. Joseph's Catholic Church - a double service with her mother, Clara Marin, who died Oct. 22, 2003.

Clara Gonzales Marin

Clara Gonzales Marin was born June 8, 1923, in Saguache, Colo.

She moved to Elko with her mother, Locadia Mascarenas Salaz, to join her father, Celestino Salaz, who was working in the Elko area. She graduated from Elko High School and she met Joseph Albert Gonzales whom she married in Wells in October 1940; they had six children. Clara worked as a cook for Elko General Hospital and Ruby Mountain Manor, retiring in 1986. Clara enjoyed gardening and fishing and spending time with her children and grandchildren.

Her three grandsons, Anthony Joseph Mendive, Gilbert James Gonzales and Alejandro Miguel Gonzales, preceded her in death.

She is survived by Veronica Mendive (Joseph), Josephine, Albert (Speedy), and Elvera Gonzales of Elko; Delores Dickson (Kenneth) of Willard, Utah, and Gasper (Speedy) Gonzales (Judy) of Filer, Idaho, as well as 11 grandchildren, many great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held Thursday, Oct. 30, at St. Joseph's Catholic Church at 10 a.m. with a pre-rosary before the mass.

Pallbearers are her grandchildren, Kenny Gonzales, Mathew Gonzales, Francisco Gonzales, Diego Gonzales, Mitchell Dickson and Lori Dickson.

Honorary pallbearers are her grandchildren, Mercedes Mendive, Pedro Miguel Correa Gonzalez, Christopher Correa Gonzalez, Timothy Dyer and Westley Dickson.

Donations may be sent to Tree of Life, Friends 4 Life or the charity of person's choice.

Clarence 'CJ' Jones

Clarence "CJ" Jones, beloved husband of Candace Jones, passed away on Oct. 25, 2003, at Washoe Medical Center. He was born on Sept. 15, 1940, to Rulen and Mae Jones in Elko, Nev.

He is survived by his wife, Candace, of Reno; his brother, Del R. Jones and wife, Diane, of Tempe, Ariz.; five nieces and nephews; and numerous beloved aunts, uncles and cousins.

He was preceded in death by his parents and son, Kevin.

Following graduation from the College of Idaho, in Caldwell, Idaho, Clarence taught school in Owyhee and Elko, Nev. In 1968, he and his family moved to Reno where he was employed in banking and other businesses. He subsequently became a real estate land developer, involved in numerous residential and commercial projects throughout the Reno/Sparks area.

Clarence volunteered many hours to the local community. Most recently, he acted as the managing partner of Sierra Nevada Baseball, the group dedicated to bringing a AAA baseball team and first-class stadium to the Reno/Sparks area. He also served on the Board of Directors of the Northern Nevada Builders Association and was a member of the board and the initial training class of the Special Advocates for the Elderly (SAFE). He served on the Ward 2 Neighborhood Advisory Board and was a longtime active member of St. Paul's Episcopal Church in Sparks.

Services will be conducted at St. Paul's on Thursday, Oct. 30, 2003, at 11 a.m. The church is located at 1135 12th St. (12th and Oddie Blvd. behind the Sparks Library).

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations in Clarence's name be made to St. Paul's Memorial Fund, P.O. Box 737, Sparks, NV 89432.

Clarence "CJ" touched the lives of so many people on his earthly pilgrimage and will be fondly remembered and terribly missed by those who knew and loved him.
