James Whitbeck

Services for James Joseph Whitbeck, 65, who died Sept. 20 in Pahrump, will be held at 8 a.m. Friday at Our Lady of the Valley Catholic Church.

He was born July 18, 1938 in Greenwich, Conn., where he lived until he was stationed at March Air Force Base, Riverside, Calif. There he met and married Frances M. Pivarnik on April 26, 1958. They lived in Lompoc, Calif., Carson City and Rialto, Calif., before moving to Pahrump in 1996.

He was the owner of Whitbeck Painting in Pahrump. He was a giving person, a loving father and husband who will be sorely missed.

His wife Fran of Pahrump; daughters Jami (Donald) Jaramillo of Rialto and Tami Hawkins of Junction City, Ore.; son James Whitbeck Jr., Bonnie and Rhianna of Pahrump; sister Yvonne Bojo of Carson City; and granddaughters Melissa and Michelle Jaramillo survive him.

In lieu of flowers donations may be made in his name to the Alzheimer's Association at www.alz.org or 800-272-3900.

Robert Johnson
No services will be held for Robert Lee Johnson, 67, who died Aug. 28 in Pahrump.

He was born June 13, 1934 in Newport, Ore., and was a resident of Pahrump for two and a half years, coming from California.

He served in the U.S. Army and then worked in management in for the construction industry.

He was a member of the Elks and was of the Protestant faith.

His wife Betty of Pahrump; daughters Cheryl Calder of California and Nanette Murphy of Oregon; sons Calvin Hill of Washington, Tim Johnson, Scott Johnson and Ted Kakures, all of California; 10 grandchildren; and five great grandchildren survive him.

His parents preceded him in death.

David Lettman
Services have been held for David Walter Lettman, 60, who died Sept. 29 in Beatty.

He was born Sept. 25, 1943 in Ohio, and was a resident of Beatty for seven years, coming from Idaho.

He was a veteran of the U.S. Army and a member of the Museum Historical Socirty. He worked as an apartment manager in Beatty.

His daughters Deborah Caparia of Beatty, Judy Aguirre and Shelly Brant, both of Reno; three grandchildren; and five great grandchildren survive him.

Norman Thompson
Private family services will be held for Norman J. (Tommy) Thompson, 84, who died Sept. 28 in Pahrump.

He was born July 6, 1919 in Sikes, La., and was an 11-year resident of Pahrump.

He retired from the U.S. Army in 1958 after 21 years of service, which spanned WWII and the Korean War. He earned the National Defense Service Medal and the Good Conduct Medal before retiring as a M/Sgt.

He then worked as a teacher and counselor for the Bossier Parish School Board in Louisiana until his retirement in 1983. He spent the next several years RVing full time with his wife.

His wife Gloria Jean of Pahrump; daughters Linda (James) Small of Madison, Wisc., and Judy (Richard) Derrickson of Round Mountain; grandchildren Danny Small, Melissa Horacek and Susan Littrell; great grandchildren Joshua Mattison and Gavin Horacek; sister Ottice Forrest of Sikes, La.; and a host of friends survive him.

His granddaughters, Misty Horacek and Kristi Mattison, preceded him in death.

In lieu of flowers donations may be made to Nathan Adelson Hospice.

Anne Willers
No services will be held for Anne Willers, 72, who died Sept. 22 in Pahrump.

She was born Sept. 15, 1931 in California, and was a resident of Pahrump for eight years, coming from Long Beach.

She attended Gulfport Mississippi College and then worked as a travel agent for Northwest Airlines until her retirement 11 years ago.

She loved to sew Barbie doll clothes and traveling.

Her children John (Madeline) Durfee of Virginia; Barbara Durfee, William Durfee, and Katie Anderson, all of Pahrump, and Dennis (Tina) Durfee of Arizona; and eight grandchildren survive her.

Her husband, Stan Willers, preceded her in death.

Edna Anderson
Private family services will be held for Edna H. Anderson, 84, who died Sept. 27 in Pahrump.

She was born Aug. 16, 1919, in Elmhurst, Ill., and was a resident of Pahrump for four years coming from Belvidere, Ill.

A homemaker, she was of the Evangelical Lutheran faith and loved collecting antiques.

Her sons, Charles (Terri) Anderson of Pahrump and Edward Anderson of Antioch, Ill.; daughter Gayle Anderson of Carol Stream, Ill.; 11 grandchildren; and 10 great grandchildren survive her.

Her husband Charles Sr. preceded her in death in 1976.

In lieu of flowers donations may be made to a favorite charity in Edna's name.

Edra Brunold
Private family services will be held for Edra Brunold, 89, who died Sept. 25 in Pahrump.

She was born Aug. 7, 1914, in St. Louis, Mo., and was a resident of Pahrump since 1997 coming from Kingsburg, Calif.

A homemaker, she loved to crochet, knit, solve crossword puzzles and watch soap operas.

Her son Michael Brunold of Pahrump; two grandchildren; and three great grandchildren survive her.

Daryl Greenway
Private Family Services will be held for Daryl Stephen Greenway, 22, who died Sept. 25 in Pahrump.

He was born Oct. 1, 1980, in Whittier, Calif., and was a 3-year resident of Pahrump coming from California.

He served in the U.S. Navy and then worked as a tire maintenance technician for Big O Tire in Pahrump.

He loved hunting, fishing and four-wheeling.

His wife Amy Perry of Pahrump; daughter Alyssa Greenway of Pahrump; father Roger Greenway of Pahrump; mother Kathy Lucas of San Diego; brothers Allen, Lance, Troy and Tommy; and sisters Melissa and Conny survive him.

Ross Long
Private family services will be held for Ross Clayton Long, 76, who died Sept. 23 in Las Vegas.

He was born Aug. 7, 1927, in Newry, Pa., and was a resident of Pahrump since 1995 coming from Los Angeles.

He served in the U.S. Army and then worked as a purchasing agent for an insurance company.

His wife Marie Long of Pahrump; son Mike (Marisa) Long of Pasadena, Calif.; daughters Ellen (Michael) Boyle of Thousand Oaks, Calif., and Julie (Jim) Richards of La Crescent, Calif.; and 10 grandchildren survive him.

E. Gene Means
No services will be held for E. Gene Means, 73, who died Sept. 19 in Pahrump.

He was born June 30, 1930, in East Chicago, Ind., and was a resident of Pahrump since 1989.

He served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War, and then worked as a meat cutter in the grocery industry until his retirement.

His son Philip Means of Las Vegas; daughter Fayette Wright of Pahrump; friend Mary Walker of Henderson; and four grandchildren survive him.

Affordable Cremation and Burial Services handled the arrangements. (9/17/03)

Sybil Salisbury

A memorial services for Sybil D. Salisbury, 65, who died Oct. 4 in Las Vegas, will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday at the United Methodist Church with the Reverend Lois Hedden presiding.

She was born Nov. 6, 1937, in Glendale, Calif. She was a resident of Pahrump for 15 years coming from Las Vegas.

A Christian, she was a missionary for the Arcade Wesleyan Church of Sacramento, Calif. She was active in after school programs for children at the Church of Tecopa and Amargosa.

Her sister Phyllis Miller of Pahrump; nephews Matthew and Gordon; five great nephews; and one great niece survive her.
