Horace Andrews
Hagaman - Horace Andrews, 89, of Haskell St., Hagaman, passed away early Tuesday morning at St. Mary's Hospital in Amsterdam.
Born in Amsterdam on November 18, 1915, a son of Joseph and Emily Stokes Andrews. He was a life long Amsterdam resident and was a 1932 graduate of Wilbur H. Lynch High School. He began working in 1933 for the Mohawk Carpet Mills in Amsterdam. He later worked for Mohasco Industries as a National Contract Sales Manager retiring in 1980.

Mr. Andrews was a member of the United Methodist Church in Amsterdam.

Mr. Andrews was an accomplished artist and enjoyed watercolor painting. He enjoyed giving his paintings to family and friends. His artwork was featured at one time at the Hagaman Art Show and the Century Club Art Show. He also loved playing golf, going fishing and above all, spending time with his grandchildren and family.

He married Ann Phoenix Andrews on July 9, 1939. In addition to his wife, survivors include three sons, Robert Andrews of Richmond, VA, Richard Andrews and his wife, Mary of Amsterdam, and William Andrews and his wife, Adrienne of Buxton, ME; one sister, Beverly Taggart and her husband, Bill of Johnstown. He is also survived by two cherished grandchildren, David Andrews of Boulder, CO, and Michele Riedl and her husband, Jeffrey of Webster, NY; nieces, nephews and cousins.

Mr. Andrews was predeceased by a sister, Florence Drake and a brother, Donald Andrews, who both passed away in 1995.

Funeral services will be held on Friday, July 1, 2005 at 1 p.m. at the United Methodist Church, 347 Golf Course Rd., Amsterdam, with the Reverend Brian Gould presiding. Interment will be in Fairview Cemetery, Amsterdam. The family will receive relatives and friends on Friday, July 1, 2005 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the United Methodist Church in Amsterdam.

Memorial contributions may be made to the United Methodist Church, 347 Golf Course Rd., Amsterdam, NY 12010.

Arrangements are under the direction of the Betz, Rossi & Bellinger Family Funeral Home, 171 Guy Park Ave., Amsterdam.

Garrett J. Bass
Greenwich - Garrett J. Bass, 27, a resident of Hill Street, died Monday, June 27, 2005 at the Albany Medical Center Hospital.
Born September 22, 1977 in Englewood, Colorado, he was the son of Gilson and Patricia Farnan Bass of Easton.

Garrett married Shannon Billings on August 2, 2003.

He graduated from Greenwich High School in 1996 where he was an outstanding athlete in football and track. He played halfback on the 1994 Wasaren American Division championship team. Garrett attended Hudson Valley Community College, and graduated in 2000 from SUNY Plattsburgh with a BA Degree in criminal justice. He was accepted for the New York State Troopers and Encon Police.

He loved the outdoors, and enjoyments included hunting, fishing, snowboarding and playing golf. He was a life member of the Old Saratoga Muzzle Loading Club and held several junior rifle shooting records.

He was an avid fan of the Ohio State Buckeyes football team, the San Francisco Forty Niners, and also enjoyed watching the New York Yankees.

Garrett was a devoted husband and father. He especially enjoyed taking his son, Tristan, who he called his “Buddy”, fishing.

Survivors in addition to his parents are his wife, Shannon of Greenwich; his son, Tristan of Greenwich; a sister, Kathleen Bass and her husband, Dr. J. P. Bissonnette of North Andover, MA; three brothers, Steven Bass and Timothy Bass of Columbus, OH, and Brian Bass of Grand Rapids, MI; grandmother, Betty Kardash of Mechanicville; also surviving are several nieces and nephews and members of his Friday night poker club.

A funeral mass will be celebrated at 9:30 a.m. Friday, July 1, 2005 at St. Joseph's Church in Greenwich with the Rev. Christopher Welch, pastor officiating.

The Rite of Committal will follow at St. Joseph's Cemetery, Greenwich.

Friends may call from 4 to 7 p.m. Thursday at Flynn Bros., Inc. Funeral Home, 80 Main Street, Greenwich.

The family suggests memorials in his name be directed to the Oncology Dept. at Albany Medical Center Children's Hospital, or the Tristan Bass Fund c/o Glens Falls National Bank, 132 Main St., Greenwich NY 12834.

Mabel Viall Carpenter
Mechanicville - Mabel Viall Carpenter, 75, of North Main Street, died unexpectedly Sunday at St. Mary's Hospital in Troy.
A native lifelong resident of the Mechanicville area, she was born February 25, 1930, daughter of the late Edward and Eleanor Kenny Viall.

Mabel attended local schools, had worked for Safeway Markets and was a waitress for many years. Mabel loved to read, watch western movies and detective programs, loved and collected owls, enjoyed time with her family and especially the annual picnics at Clam Steam Tavern and at her brother Bob's.

She was predeceased by her husband, Joseph Carpenter, who died in 1980; a sister, Joan  Schmidt and brother Fred “Brother” Viall.

Mabel's life will be celebrated by the way she touched our lives, in her own special way.

A special thank you to all the kind and special staff at St. Mary's, who made her brief stay comforting and peaceful. And, to her special friends and neighbors, especially, June Cyr at the Mid–rise Apartments, who helped her and made this time for her comforting.

Survivors include her children, Joseph Carpenter of Rexford, Marion Duffy of Delmar, Jeanne Batchelder of Mechanicville, Joyce Marrocco of Rotterdam, Dexter Carpenter of Glenville and Pamela Sheldon of North Carolina; grandchildren, Jason, Joseph, Chelsea, Matthew, Megan, John, Courtney, Nadine, Elizabeth, Laura, Samantha, Brett, Shelby, Bowen, Courtney, Sydney and Stephanie; great–grandchildren, Anthony and Jared. Also survived by her sisters, Eleanor Thrane of Halfmoon, Eileen Minor and Evelyn Camerato, both of Mechanicville, June Salmon of VA and Joyce Viall of Schenectady; brothers, Edward “Bud” Viall, Robert and Thomas Viall, all of Mechanicville and Wayne Viall of Schenectady; along with many nieces and nephews.

A funeral service will be held on Thursday evening at 7 p.m. at the Devito–Salvadore Funeral Home, 39 So. Main St., Mechanicville, with burial in St. Paul's Cemetery.

Calling hours at the funeral home on Thursday from 4 to 7 p.m.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Capital District Cancer Resource Foundation, Latham.

Lloyd F. Conklin, Jr.
Ocala, FL - Lloyd F. Conklin, Jr., 83, of Ocala, FL, formerly of Peekskill, NY died Monday June 27, 2005 at Ellis Hospital.
Born in Peekskill on January 29, 1922, he was the son of the late Lloyd F. Sr., and Ann Dempshar Conklin.

During World War II Mr. Conklin served with the United States Air Force as a Lieutenant and B-17 Bomber Pilot, flying over 30 successful missions. He was employed by Local #137, Operating Engineers,  White Plains, NY for over 20 years until his retirement.

An avid outdoorsman, Mr. Conklin enjoyed fishing, hunting and golfing. He also enjoyed storytelling, traveling, bowling and ballroom dancing with his wife. A horseshoe champion, his accomplishments include catching the second largest sailfish in the world at 9 ft. and was a New York Yankees farm team member known as “the blonde bomber”.

After 57 years of marriage Mr. Conklin was predeceased by his wife, Rosemary Rotello Conklin who died 2003.

Survivors include his daughters, Linda (Philip) Arony of Charlton, NY and Nancy (Peter) Billard of Hebron, CT; his brother, Richard Conklin of Middleburgh, NY; his sisters, Kit Conklin and Virginia Thomas both of Greeley, CO; his grandson, Jesse Billard of Hebron, CT and several nieces, nephews.

Memorial services will be held Thursday, July 7, 2005 at 11 a.m. at Baxter-Andrew Funeral Home, 1867 State Street, Schenectady. The family will receive relatives and friends on Thursday, July 7, 2005 from 10 until 11 a.m. at the funeral home.

Memorial contributions may be made in his memory to The Mighty Eighth Air Force Museum, P.O. Box 1992 Savannah, GA 31402.

John Byron Girdner
Schenectady - John Byron Girdner died June 26, 2005, at his home after a long illness. He donated his body to the Albany Medical College.
He was born May 7, 1921 in Salt Lake City, Utah, the son of John Stanley and Beatrice Edna Girdner. He was predeceased by his first wife, Arleen Ehne and by his brother, Douglas.

He received his degrees in psychology from the University of Utah and from Duke University and came to Union College in 1953, first as student counselor and then professor of psychology. He retired in 1988.

His life was devoted to educating his students well. In his “Practica in Human Relations” course he pioneered the development of internships before it became more common to do so, sending his students into Schenectady schools and to various helping organizations for application of the psychological theories they had learned. He was an avid reader, engaged in the pursuit of knowledge in many fields outside of his discipline and interested to the end in how individual, social, scientific and ideological “realities” are constructed. He loved literature, particularly Iris Murdoch, Annie Dillard, Emily Dickinson and Robert Frost. He also loved “everything German,” learned the language, taught for a year at the University of Heidelberg and traveled widely in Europe.

He is survived by his wife, Sigrid Kellenter; his three stepchildren, Gunther, Paul and Tay, and by their families; as well as his sister–in–law, Arda; a niece and nephew, Amy and Kim and their families.

A memorial service celebrating his life will be held at 10 a.m., Sunday, July 3, 2005 at the First Unitarian Society of Schenectady, 1221 Wendell Ave., with the Rev. Russ Savage officiating.

Contributions in memory of John B. Girdner may be made to the Community Hospice of Schenectady, 1411 Union St., Schenectady, NY 12308.

Nancy N. Gorgos
Niskayuna - Nancy Naumoff Gorgos, 59, died June 27, 2005 at the Community Hospice Inn at St. Peter's Hospital, following a long illness.
Born in Kingston, PA, she was the daughter of the late Dr. Joseph H. and Ruth Hurrey Naumoff. Nancy was raised in Niskayuna and resided there throughout her lifetime. Mrs. Gorgos was a former girl scout, spending her teenage years with the Sea Scouts Program. She graduated from Niskayuna High School in 1964. Nancy attended Alfred University and graduated from Albany Business College with a computer science degree. Mrs. Gorgos worked for several years for the New York State Department of Agriculture and Markets prior to raising her family. For the past eleven years, she was the administrator for the Home Furnishings Program of Schenectady, a volunteer agency serving families in need. She was well- known in Niskayuna for her many volunteer activities. Nancy served in many leadership roles with the Parent Teacher Organizations at Craig Elementary, Iroquois Middle School and Niskayuna High School. She was a longtime member of the Niska-Day organization committee and served in many capacities, including co-chairman. Nancy was the beloved wife of 35 years to James Gorgos.

She was the devoted mother of David Gorgos of Philadelphia, PA and Debra Gorgos of Troy, NY. She is also survived by her aunt, Margaret Hurrey of Las Vegas, NV; her brother, Michael; her sister, Natalie and numerous nieces, nephews and in-laws.

Friends may gather to reminisce and celebrate Nancy's life on Wednesday evening from 7 to 9 p.m. at New Comer-Cannon Family Funeral Home, 343 New Karner Rd., Colonie (Rt. 155-south of Central Ave).

Interment will be private at the convenience of the family.

In lieu of flowers, those wishing to remember Nancy may make contributions to the Juvenile Diabetes Foundation, Northeastern New York Chapter, 6 Greenwood Drive, East Greenbush, NY 12061 in memory of Nancy N. Gorgos.

Richard G. Mourer
Blackduck, MN - Richard G. Mourer, 42, of Blackduck passed away unexpectedly on Tuesday, June 21, 2005 at his home in Blackduck, MN.
He was born January 10, 1963 in Minneapolis, Minnesota, the son of Merlin “Sonny” Mourer and Jeanne (Gehrig) Saunders. He graduated from Blackduck High School in May of 1981. He was a long time resident of Blackduck, Minnesota and Schenectady, New York. Richard served in the U.S. Navy from 1984 to 1987.

He is survived by his daughter, Anna M. Mourer of Schenectady, NY; his son, Richard G. Mourer, Jr. of Satsuma, FL; his mother, Jeanne Sanders; his step-mother, Caroline Mourer of Alvwood, MN; a brother, Ronald (Veronica) Mourer of Alvwood, MN; two sisters, Maureen Mourer of Hopkins, MN, and Michelle Rieneke (Duane) of Lake Crystal, MN; an aunt, Deloris Rand of Blackduck, MN; three nieces, Amy, Sarah, and Jessica; and one nephew, Jonathan.

He was preceded in death by his father, Merlin “Sonny” Mourer.

Memorial Services will be held at 2 p.m., Wednesday, June 29, 2005 at the Cease Funeral Home Chapel in Blackduck, MN with Pastor Mark Mathes officiating.

In lieu of flowers the family requests memorials to be sent in Richard Mourer's name to: Pine Manor, Inc., 22195 State Hwy 34, Nevis, MN 56467.

James Edward Newman
Rockford, NC - James Edward Newman formerly of Ballston Spa, passed away peacefully Sunday at his home in Rockwell, NC, after a long battle with Parkinson's disease.

Mr. Newman worked for General Electric for 48 years at the Knolls Atomic Power Lab and later as a technical editor in Valley Forge, PA. He was known to be the man that could “get the job done” by his fellow employees. He served during WWII in the Army and both the European and Asian Campaigns.

He was predeceased by his parents, John and Anna Newman and his beloved stepmother, Barbara, as well as his brothers, Bert and Lester Newman and a sister, Helen Gower.

He is survived by nieces, Janice Newman Coleman of Basking Ridge, NJ, Anne Gower of Ballston Spa and MaryLou Gower Michelin of North Carolina and California. He is also survived by several great and grandnieces and nephews.

A funeral Mass will be held Friday at 9:30 a.m. at St. Mary's Church, Ballston Spa. Calling hours will be from 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday at the Wheeler Funeral Home, 25 Hyde Blvd., Ballston Spa. Interment will be held in the Ballston Village Cemetery.

Arrangements are by the Wheeler Funeral Home.

Elizabeth F. Patterson
Latham - Elizabeth F. Patterson, 50, of Latham, died Sunday, June 26, 2005 at her residence.
Born in Teaneck, NJ, she was the daughter of the late John B. and Evelyn Brannigan. She was raised in Bergen County, and was a graduate of Northern Valley High School at Demarest, NJ. A graduate of Russell Sage College, she received her BS degree in Physical Education. She had been a resident of the Latham–Loudonville area since 1985.

Elizabeth was employed as a mortgage broker at Trans Costal Funding Inc. of Albany for ten years. She also was associated with Habitat for Humanity of Schenectady as a grant writer for the past five years.

She was a member of the New England Congregational Church of Saratoga Springs. Her passion for tennis led to her membership in various tennis leagues in the area.

She is survived by her son, Thomas F. Patterson of Loudonville; her partner, Sharon P. O'Meara of Latham; and her former husband of 12 years, Dr. Norman Patterson. She was predeceased by her son, Brian T. Patterson and her brother, Bruce J. Brannigan.

Funeral service will be at 10 a.m. Friday at the Presbyterian New England Congregational Church, 24 Circular Street, Saratoga Springs. A gathering of friends will take place from 5 to 7 p.m. Thursday at the Bowen Funeral Home, 97 Old Loudon Road, Latham. Interment of cremains in St. Agnes Cemetery, Menands.

Contributions in Elizabeth's memory may be made to the Mohawk–Hudson Humane Society, Oakwood Avenue, Menands, NY 12204, or Habitat for Humanity of Schenectady County, 115 Broadway, Schenectady, NY 12305.

Mary Elizabeth Pezzula
Niskayuna - Mary Elizabeth (Wilson) Pezzula, 61, of Niskayuna, died Sunday, June 26, 2005, at St. Clare's Hospital in Schenectady surrounded by her family.

Mrs. Pezzula was born May 17, 1944 in Troy, NY, the daughter of the late Henry Guy Wilson and Margaret M. Kelly Wilson. Through part of her childhood she was raised by her beloved uncle and aunt, the late Griffith and Dorothy Kelly Lewis. She was a graduate of St. Paul's Elementary School and Catholic Central High School in Troy and of Russell Sage Junior College in Albany. She was employed by St. Peter's Hospital for 15 years until taking time off to raise her children. She then worked for Best Systems in Albany, and most recently she was nanny to three young cousins. She also served as parent-advocate on the Special Education Committee of the Niskayuna School District.

Mrs. Pezzula is survived by her husband, Carmine Pezzula; her children, Michael, Melissa and Matthew Pezzula; her brother, John J. Wilson, F.S.C.; her sister, Jane A. (Timothy) Fitzmaurice; her cousins who were like her brothers, G. Richard (Maryrose) Lewis, Ronald (Barb) Lewis, Gary (Pat) Lewis and Peter (Glenda) Lewis; her mother–in–law, Bessie Padula Pezzula; her brothers–in–law, William (Virginia) Pezzula, Anthony (Valerie) Pezzula and Michael Pezzula; her nieces, Elizabeth Fitzmaurice (Harlan) Perrins, Erin Fitzmaurice and Sheri Pezzula (D.J.) Sablich; and her nephews, Timothy J. Fitzmaurice, Mark Pezzula and Joseph Pezzula.

Funeral services will be held in the Hans Funeral Home, 1088 Western Ave., Albany, Thursday morning at 8, and 9 a.m. in St. Clare's Church, Central Ave., Colonie. Relatives and friends are invited, and may call at the funeral home Wednesday from 4 to 8 p.m.

Interment will be in St. Agnes Cemetery, Menands.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Easter Seals NY, 292  Washington Ave. Ext., Albany, NY 12203; or to the Center for the Disabled, 314 So. Manning Blvd., Albany, NY 12208.

Dolores Brodzinski Rekucki
Glenville - Dolores Brodzinski Rekucki, 73, of Hadel Rd., Glenville, passed away peacefully at home on Saturday, June 25, 2005.

Born in Schenectady, she was a graduate of Mont Pleasant High School. She worked for the New York Telephone Company and the United States Navy Depot. She was a member of the Polish National Alliance.

Dolores will be remembered for her generosity, her caring and selfless spirit as well as her love for family, friends and life. She will be missed by many.

She was predeceased by her parents, Joseph and Sophie Brodzinski and a sister, Elizabeth Sarnacki.

Dolores was the beloved wife of Louis J. Rekucki, whom she married on June 16, 1956. Loving mother of Mark Rekucki and his wife, Susan of Clifton Park and Michael Rekucki of Scotia. Cherished grandmother of Christopher, Joseph and Meghan Rekucki. Also survived by several nieces, nephews and cousins.

The Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at the Church of Saint Adalbert, Thursday morning at 9 a.m. Relatives and friends are cordially invited to attend.

Interment will be in St. Mary's Cemetery.

Memorial contributions in Dolores's memory may be sent to the Church of St. Adalbert Restoration Fund, 550 Lansing St., Schenectady, NY 12303.

Arrangements are by the Leszczynski Funeral Home.
