Melvin Hasenkamp

PORTLANDVILLE — Mr. Melvin R. Hasenkamp, 85, of Portlandville, died Friday, Jan. 31, 2003, in Rochester.

He was born on April 24, 1917, in West Point, Neb., a son of Herman and Minnie (Kind) Hasenkamp.

Mel attended schools in Nebraska and finished his high school education through correspondence courses.

He served in the Army during World War II, and completed his tour of duty at the Scintilla plant in Sidney.

He married his loving wife, Dorothy E. Hughes, on March 24, 1950.

Mel worked most of his life as a union carpenter and laborer with Local No. 258. Upon his retirement in the early 1980s he enjoyed hunting, fishing and working on his farm with the animals.

He was a member of the Milford American Legion Post No. 1566, and a member of the Carpenters Union Local No. 258.

Mel is survived by his loving wife of 53 years, Dorothy; a son, Clifford (Kip) Hasenkamp and his wife, Diane, of Cooperstown; a daughter, MaryAnn McGonigal and husband, Robert, of Kendall, a daughter, Doreen Hasenkamp of Clifon Park; two grandsons, Tyler and Kyle McGonigal of Kendall; two sisters, LaVanda Schuetze and Mildred Wiechman of Nebraska; two brothers, LeRoy and Warren Hasenkamp of Nebraska; two special nephews, John and Wayne Sherman; many aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and cousins.

He was predeceased by a son, Melvin R. Hasenkamp Jr. in 1968; one brother, Lester Hasenkamp; one sister, Mrs. Winifred Drieling; and two sisters-in-law, Glady Cooper and Anita Sherman.

A memorial service will be at 11 a.m. Friday, Feb. 7, 2003, at the Tillapaugh Funeral Home in Milford, with the Milford American Legion Post No. 1566 providing a Military Memorial Service. There will be a luncheon at the Portlandville Methodist Church following the service.

Calling hours will be held on Thursday, Feb. 6, 2003, from 5 to 8 p.m. at the Tillapaugh Funeral Home in Milford, when the family will be in attendance.

In lieu of flowers, expressions of sympathy in the form of memorial contributions may be made to the Milford Fire Department and Emergency Squad, P.O. Box 359, Milford, N.Y. 13807.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Tillapaugh Funeral Service, Cooperstown and Milford.

Steven Van Winkler

SPRINGFIELD CENTER — Steven Van Winkler, 93, passed away Friday, Jan. 31, 2003, at his home from natural causes.

He was born Oct. 3, 1909, in Burlington Flats, the son of Andrew and Mary (Shuster) Van Winkler.

On July 15, 1932, he married Ethal Mae (Tinky) Butts in Castleton. She predeceased Steven.

Mr. Van Winkler worked for the town of Springfield Highway Department for 20 years and the New York State Parks for 10 years.

He lived in the area for 60 years, and was a founding member of the Springfield Fire Department.

Survivors include his children, Vernon Van Winkler and wife, Barbara, of Afton, Fredrick Van Winkler and wife, Beverly, of Springfield, Edward Van Winkler of Cedarville, Stephen Van Winkler of Saratoga Springs, Mary Gregory of North Highland, Calif., and David Van Winkler and wife, Nina, of Springfield; 20 grandchildren; and 23 great-grandchildren.

A funeral service will be held at the Ottman Funeral Home in Cherry Valley, on Tuesday, Feb. 4, 2003, at 11 a.m., with the Rev. Persis Williams officiating.

Interment in Springfield Cemetery in Springfield will take place in the spring at a time to be announced.

Contributions in Mr. Van Winkler's memory may be made to the Springfield First Responders.

Arrangements are entrusted to the Ottman Funeral Home, Cherry Valley.

Robert

VanValkenburg

AFTON — Robert VanValkenburg, 77, of Afton, passed away Saturday, Feb. 1, 2003, at his home.

He was born July 4, 1925, son of the late Stratford and Edith Gifford VanValkenburg in Masonville.

Robert was employed as a machinist for E.C.D. of Bendix in Sidney for 33 years prior to retiring.

He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Mary E. VanValkenburg, Afton; four daughters and sons-in-law, Carol and Thomas Kopl, Endicott, Linda and Robert Holic, Oriskany Falls, Phyllis and James Kaufman, Owego, and Barbara and Lawrence Rowe, Unadilla; three sisters, Ruth Stoutenberg, Afton, Doris Beilby, Deposit, and Jean Stanton, Afton; 13 grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

He was predeceased by son, Bruce, and three brothers, Theron, Milton and Millard.

Friends may call Tuesday, Feb. 4, 2003, from 1 to 3 and 6 to 8 p.m. at C.H. Landers Funeral Chapel, 21 Main St., Sidney.

Funeral services will be private and at the convenience of the family. Burial will be in Glenwood Cemetery in Afton in the spring.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Make-A-Wish Foundation of America, 3550 North Central Ave., Suite 300, Phoenix, AZ 85012.

Arrangements are under the direction of C.H. Landers, Inc., Sidney.

Hilton I. Brown

WORCESTER — Hilton I. Brown, "Brownie," 77, of Worcester, died at home on Saturday, Feb. 1, 2003.

He was born March 9, 1925, in Davenport, the son of Ivan and Lena (Banks) Brown. He grew up in Richmondville.

An outstanding baseball player, he was offered a pitching contract with the Brooklyn Dodgers; he served his country in World War II, owned his own service station and later spent many years driving trucks throughout the area.

He married Vivan Karker of Richmondville, moved to East Worcester and raised four children, Joan, George, Joy and Richard. His first wife died in 1982. He remarried in 1989 to Antoinette Rufo, moved to Worcester.

He served on the Worcester Town Council, and worked at the Worcester Center and NAPA.

He is survived by his wife, Ann, of 13 years; two sons, George and Richard, both of Syracuse; two daughters, Joy of Sloansville and Joan of Hollywood; a sister, Vernice of Schoharie; seven grandchildren, George, Connor, Emily, Amanda, Andrew, Christopher and Flanagan.

Calling hours will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 4, 2003, at the E.J. Skinner Co. Funeral Chapel in Worcester.

A graveside service will be held at a later date in the East Worcester Cemetery.

At the family's request, contributions may be made to the Catskill Area Hospice & Palliative Care Inc., 542 Main St., Oneonta, N.Y. 13820.

Arrangements are by E.J. Skinner Co., 155 Main St., Worcester.

William D. Cannon

ONEONTA — William D. Cannon, 50, of Oneonta, and formerly of Burlington Flats, died Jan. 31, 2003, after a lengthy illness at his residence.

He was born Feb. 29, 1952, in Brooklyn, the son of Edward and Clara (Kopcinski) Cannon, who survive.

He married Bernadette Butler on March 23, 1974, on Long Island.

Bill served in the U.S. Army during the Vietnam War and was awarded the Purple Heart.

He had been an 18-year area resident. He had been a former employee of the U.S. Postal Service.

He was an honorable life member of the Disabled America Veterans associations, and St. Mary's Roman Catholic Church in Oneonta.

He is survived by his wife, and his parents; one daughter and son-in-law, Jennifer and Joseph Harkenreader; and a son, Timothy M. Cannon, all of Oneonta; a grandchild, Taylor Harkenreader; a sister and brother-in-law, Maryellen and James Angell, and their daughter, Claire, of Commack.

He was predeceased by a brother, Timmothy Cannon.

Friends may call from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. today, Feb. 3, 2003, when the family will be in attendance, at the Lewis-Hurley Funeral Home, 51 Dietz St., Oneonta

A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered at 10 a.m. Tuesday, Feb. 4, 2003, at St. Mary's Roman Catholic Church in Oneonta, with the Rev. Thomas Babiuch officiating.

Burial will be later in Mt. Calvary Cemetery, Emmons.

Those who wish may make contributions to the Catskill Area Hospice.

Ruth E. Mitchell

CANAJOHARIE — Ruth Elizabeth Mitchell, 75, passed away Friday, Jan. 31, 2003, at her home.

She was born Dec. 29, 1927, in the town of Glen, the daughter of John and Elizabeth (Svenson) Johnson.

On Nov. 24, 1949, she married Theodore J. Mitchell in the village of Canajoharie; he survives.

Mrs. Mitchell was a housewife since 1949, and had lived in Canajoharie since 1959.

Survivors besides her husband, Theodore J. Mitchell, include a daughter, Elizabeth and Joe Burns; a son, James and Lisa Mitchell, another son, Richard and Autumn Mitchell, another daughter, Donna and Kevin Hall, and a daughter, Mary and Ken Smith. She is also survived by her 10 grandchildren; two stepgrandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

A funeral service will be at 11 a.m. today, Feb. 3, 2003, at the Ottman Funeral Home, Cherry Valley, with the Rev. Kenneth Dingman officiating.

Interment in Mapletown Cemetery in the town of Canajoharie will take place later this spring at a time to be announced.

Contributions in Mrs. Mitchell's memory may be made to Mid. County Ambulance and the Canajoharie Fire Department.

Arrangements are entrusted to the Ottman Funeral Home, Cherry Valley.

Beatrice E. Pizza

ONEONTA — Beatrice (Bea) Pizza of Oneonta went to be with the Lord Feb. 2, 2003, after a long and courageous battle with cancer.

She was born Sept. 28, 1925, in Oneonta, the daughter of Stanley and Bessie (Briscoll) Yager.

She married Joseph Pizza on Sept. 5, 1943.

She worked for Custom Electronics Inc. for 20 years and retired.

She was an avid golfer and she spent the last 18 years in Florida in the winter with her husband.

She was a member of Saint Mary's Church. She was a very loving wife and mother. She was a very outgoing person, full of life and love. Everyone who knew her loved her. She had a great sense of humor.

She is survived by her husband, Joseph, (Sonny); her son, Thomas and his wife, Susan; her sister, Laura Munson and her husband, Dick; a sister in law, Veronica Nelson and Louie Bertuzzi; a grandson, Brett; and nieces, nephews and their families.

Bea was predeceased by a son, Gerald.

There will be a memorial service at the Lewis Hurley Funeral Home at noon on Friday, Feb. 7, 2003, with the Rev. Thomas Babiuch, associate pastor of St. Mary's Roman Catholic Church, officiating.

There will be a reception following for close friends and family at Pizzaland on Oneida Street, Oneonta.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Catskill Area Hospice, 542 Main St., Oneonta, N.Y. 13820.

Arrangements are by Lewis Hurley Funeral Home, 51 Dietz St., Oneonta.

Mary A. Lynch

WATERVLIET — Mary A. O'Malley Lynch, 88, died peacefully Friday evening, Jan. 31, 2003, at St. Peter's Hospital in Albany.

She was born in Oneonta on Jan. 18, 1915, she was the daughter of the late William and Lillian LaStrange O'Malley.

She was the wife of the late James J. Lynch who died April 7, 1991.

She has been a resident of Watervliet for the past 55 years. She was employed at Montgomery Ward in Menands for 20 years. She was a communicant of St. Brigid's Church in Watervliet.

Survivors include a daughter, Mrs. Robert (Therese) Mattick of Rochester; two sons, John Lynch and Bill Lynch, both of Saratoga Springs; four grandchildren, Kara Vanderveer of Clifton Park, Shawn Lynch of Brookline, Mass., Kathleen Mattick of Rochester, and James Lynch of Saratoga Springs; two great-grandchildren, Matthew and Sarah Vanderveer; a sister-in-law, Marie O'Malley of Oneonta.

She was predeceased by her two brothers, the Rev. Monsignor Edward L. O'Malley of Albany and William O'Malley of Oneonta.

Relatives and friends are invited and may call at the Cummings Funeral Home on Tuesday from 4 to 8 p.m.

Funeral services will be Wednesday at 8:15 a.m. from the Cummings Funeral Home, 643 Third Ave., (Route 32 South of Arsenal), Watervliet, and at 9 a.m. at the Historic St. Mary's Church on Capitol Hill, Lodge Street in Albany, where a Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated.

Burial will be in the spring in Mt. Calvary Cemetery in Oneonta.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Community Hospice of Albany, 315 S. Manning Blvd., Albany, N.Y. 12208 in memory of Mary A. Lynch.

Joseph Balado

ELDERSBURG, Md. — Joseph William Balado Sr., 69, of Eldersburg, formerly of Islip, N.Y., died Saturday, Feb. 1, 2003, at Carroll County General Hospital.

He was the spouse of Theresa Arbia Balado.

He was born on March 3, 1933, in Manhattan, the son of the late Joseph and Juanita Lata Balado.

Mr. Balado worked for Petro Fuel as a plumbing and heating technician. He enjoyed woodworking, model building and various other crafts.

Surviving besides his wife; are children, Donna Balado of Eldersburg, Joseph Balado Jr. of Long Island, N.Y., John Balado of Cooperstown, N.Y., Juanita Challis of Mt. Carmel, Pa., Anthony Balado of Long Island; sister, Juanita McCabe of New Jersey; brother, John Balado of Florida; halfsister, Carmen Balado; and halfbrothers, Dino and Pepe Balado. Also survived by 13 grandchildren, Sara, Emma and Dana Kobylenski, Erica, Joseph III, Julie, John Jr., Jennifer., Anthony, Jr., Egidio and Melissa Balado, Cheryl and Kirsten Challis.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be said on Tuesday, Feb. 4, 2003, at 10 a.m. at St. Joseph's Catholic Community, Liberty Road, Eldersburg, Md.

The family will receive friends at Burrier-Queen Funeral Home, 1212 West Old Liberty Road, Winfield, Md., 21784 on Monday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the American Lung Association, 1840 York Road, Timonium, MD 21093.

Jaylene Rathbun

LAURENS — Jaylene Rathbun, 42, died Jan. 30, 2003, at Albany Medical Center.

She was born June 8, 1960, in Bangor, Maine, to Starr and Patricia (Duplissis) Liddle.

She attended Laurens Central School and had been an employee of the Upstate Home for Children. Jaylene will be remembered for her special way with children and her never ending love of her family. She will be greatly missed by everyone who knew her.

She is survived by her husband, Isaac Rathbun; and daughters, Cassandra and Krystal of Laurens; sons, Joshua Noble of Oswego, Jason Noble of Oneonta; parents, Patricia Spindler, Belton, S.C., and Starr Liddle, Laurens; maternal grandmother, Patricia Duplissis, Oneonta; her sisters and spouses, Sherry and Charles Place, Oneonta, Terri and Travis Beers, Wells Bridge; and brother, Daniel Liddle and wife, Jennifer, Laurens; mother-in-law, Janice and husband, Deforest, Mulkins, Oneonta; father-in-law, Perry Rathbun and Vicki Copeland, Mariposa, Calif.; sister-in-law, Vicki Salamon, Laurens; brothers-in-law, Jimmer and wife, Debbie, Rathbun, Oneonta, and Christopher Rathbun, Oneonta; nieces and nephews, Nicole Beers, Ashley, Daniel and Bryanna Liddle, Andrew and Amanda Salamon; and special friend, Robin Platt.

Memorial services will be held at 4 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 5, 2003, at the Laurens Presbyterian Church in Laurens, with the Rev. Harry Meyers officiating. The family will be receiving friends at the church one hour prior to service time; and also one hour following the service at the Laurens American Legion.

Burial will be in the spring in the Laurens Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made for daughters, Cassandra and Krystal, in care of Vicki Salamon, P.O. Box 258, Laurens, N.Y. 13796.

Beatrice J. Willems

PORT ORANGE, Fla. — Beatrice J. Willems, 82, of Summerville Assisted Living Home, went to be with her Lord on Saturday, Feb. 1, 2003.

She was born March 4, 1920, in Burlington Flats, the daughter of John and Anna (Davis) Dillworth. After the death of her mother, when Bea was 4 days old, she was raised by her grandmother, Theresa Davis.

Bea graduated from Edmeston Central School in 1937.

She married Jacob Willems in June 1938. Bea worked for Otsego Mutual Insurance Co. in Burlington Flats and New York Central Insurance Co. in Edmeston.

In 1959, Bea and Jake bought the skating rink in West Burlington, where they had many years of enjoyment with the children in skating and dances and enjoyed the community involvements. Bea was a member of the Epiphany Catholic Church.

Bea and Jake moved to Daytona Beach, Fla., in 1977, where she worked for Shulins Insurance Co. until her retirement in 1990.

She enjoyed bowling, playing bingo and reading.

She was predeceased by her husband of 53 years.

She is survived by her children, Marlea Hickling, New Smyrna Beach, Fla., and her husband, Tony; Johanna Bird, Houston, Texas and her husband Len; and Frederick Willems, College Station, Texas, and his wife, Patricia. Bea is also survived by seven grandchildren, Scott Hickling, Daytona Beach, Darryl Hickling, New Smyrna Beach, Tricia Huie, New Smyrna Beach, Cindy Boyd, College Station, Michael Bird, Baton Rouge, La., Gregory Willems, College Station, and Brian Willems, Los Angeles, Calif.

Bea took great delight in her 10 great-grandchildren, Michele and Russ Hickling, Dana Jo Hickling, Ashley Houle, Jarrod and Dylan Huie, Ali Boyd, Kendall, Hadley and Keeley Willems. She is also survived by a nephew, Allan Higgins and wife, Connie of Lorida, Fla.

Memorial contributions may be made to Hospice of Volusia/Flagler, 3800 Woodbriar Trail, Port Orange, FL 32129.

Arrangements under the direction of Cardwell & Maloney Funeral Home, Port Orange, Fla.
