Albert J. Fortin

ONEONTA — Albert J. Fortin Jr., 77, of Oneonta, passed away on Saturday, Feb. 8, 2003, at Bassett Healthcare in Cooperstown.

He was born Aug. 15, 1925, in Worcester, Mass., the son of Albert J. and Eva (Goulet) Fortin.

He married Elise Virginia Young on Nov. 10, 1951, in the state of Virginia.

Albert served in the U.S. Army during World War II, and was discharged as a technician fifth grade. Albert was awarded the following: World War II Victory Theater Medal, European-African-Middle Eastern Campaign Medal, and the Good Conduct Medal. After returning from the service, Albert moved to Oneonta in 1947.

In 1985, he retired from Allied/Amphenol Corp. in Sidney, where he worked for 38 years and was a member of the International Association of Machinist.

Albert will be remembered as an avid hunter, fisherman and environmentalist. He was a member of the American Legion Post 259, the B.P.O.E. (Elks Club) and the VFW in Oneonta and the American Rifle Association. At the American Legion he was known as an avid pool player. Because of his support of the activities at the Legion, they dedicated the game room in his name. He was a past member of the Oneonta Sportsman Club Pistol Team.

Both Albert and Elise were licensed pilots. For love of flying they opened the F&F Airport in 1959. It was the only airport in Oneonta at the time. They ran a flight school where Albert was an inspiration to his students and was proud of them when they got licensed. The A.O.P.A. Pilot Magazine wrote an article praising the airport. The author stated that it was the only parallel grass lighted landing strip he had ever seen.

Albert loved to help others have a great time. Albert and his friends built a pavilion and picnic area in a pine grove on the property. Over the years events were held there such as fireworks on the 4th of July. The "Reminiscers" Antique Car Show and Flea Market started there.

Albert was also a founding member of the Royal Order of the Pines, a group of pilots and friends with mutual interest, dedicated to continued friendship and camaraderie. The group met with regularity at the picnic grove and appropriately designated Albert as "The Grand Keeper of the Pines," a responsibility he undertook with much pride.

Albert and Elise sold the airport to the town of Oneonta with the stipulation that it be used as a park (Fortin Park) so others could enjoy the property in the future as they had.

Albert is survived by his wife, Elise Y. Fortin, of Oneonta. He is also survived by his brothers and sisters, Jean Cheri, Douglas and Richard Fortin of Maryland, Lucille Danker of South Carolina, Doris Kelleher of Massachusetts, and Francis Fortin of Virginia; along with two stepgrandchildren, several nieces, nephews and cousins.

He was predeceased by his three sisters, Theresa Kelleher, Martha J. Smith, and H. JoAnne Swift; and his stepson, James Pattengill.

A service to celebrate the life of Albert J. Fortin will be held later in the year at Fortin Park where the Oneonta American Legion will accord military honors.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Catskill Area Hospice.

Arrangements are with the Lester R. Grummons Funeral Home, Oneonta.
