Clifton H. Puffer

SIDNEY CENTER — Clifton H. Puffer of Sidney Center passed away Wednesday, Feb. 12, 2003, at the New York State Veterans Home in Oxford, after an extended illness.

He was born April 24, 1926, in the town of Tompkins, to James and Frances Shackelton Puffer.

Clifton married Doris E. Wilson on Dec. 26, 1948, in Masonville.

He was self-employed as a general contractor, logging, excavating, driveways, etc. He also worked for Jess F. Howe's for many years prior to that.

He took great pride and joy in his family: his wife Doris; four daughters and sons-in-law, Sonnie and Duke Finch, Sidney Center, Sharon Grimes, Maine, Tina and John Steen, Ohio, and Maria and Bernie Langille, McDonough; four sons and daughters-in-law, Jerry and Sonja Puffer, Unadilla, Blair and Debby Puffer, Bainbridge, Jeff and Vickie Puffer, Nevada, and Vance and Nicole Puffer, Caledonia; 18 grandchildren; two stepgrandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and two sisters, Virginia Lambrecht, Sidney, and Winnie Roof, Sidney Center.

Funeral services will be private and at the convenience of the family.

Friends and family may call Tuesday, Feb. 18, 2003, at the Sidney Center United Methodist Church from 4:30 to 7:30 p.m.

Burial will be at a later date in Evergreen Hill Cemetery, Unadilla.

Memorial contributions may be made in Cliff's memory to the Sidney Center Emergency Squad, Sidney Center Fire Department or the charity of one's choice.

Arrangements are under the direction of C.H. Landers, Inc. Funeral Chapel, 21 Main St., Sidney.

Florence M. Piroha

SARATOGA SPRINGS — Florence M. Piroha, 84, formerly of West Circular Street, Saratoga Springs, died on Tuesday, Feb. 11, 2003, at the Delaware County Countryside Care Center, Delhi.

Born on Jan. 19, 1919, in Saratoga Springs, she was the daughter of the late Wilbur and Emma (Dunn) Grant.

She married Stephen A. Piroha in 1941. He predeceased her on March 9, 2002.

She lived in Saratoga Springs all of her life, raising her two children and was a member of the Church of St. Peter.

Surviving are her son and daughter-in-law, Robert "Duke" and Mary Ann Piroha of Hamden; daughter and son-in-law, Janice and Len Wallinger of Yorktown Heights; two granddaughters, Spring Piroha of Mount Upton, and Nicci Piroha of Highland; her aunt, Mrs. Leo McCarthy of Ballston Spa; as well as a number of nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by her father and mother, her brother, Walter and his wife, Anna Weatherwax, and a sister, Ida, and her husband, Wes Tyler.

Friends may call on Thursday from 7 to 9 p.m. at the William J. Burke & Sons/Bussing & Cunniff Funeral Homes, 628 North Broadway, where the family will be in attendance.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Friday in the Church of St. Peter, 241 Broadway, by the Rev. Robert J. LeFevre, pastor, officiating.

Burial will follow in the family plot in St. Peter's Cemetery, West Avenue.

Memorials may be made in her name to the Delaware County Hospice, 20 Elm St., Delhi, NY 13753.

Ronald E. Knapp

DEPOSIT — Ronald E. "Coach" Knapp, 92, of Deposit, and formerly of Sidney, passed away Wednesday, Feb. 12, 2003, at Wilson Memorial Hospital in Johnson City.

He was born Dec. 4, 1910, son of the late John Fritz and Susie Knapp in Sidney.

He served his country in the United States Navy, he was honorably discharged as a Chief Petty Officer.

Ron was quite an athlete in his day; his game was football. He played for the Penn State University in State College, Pennsylvania. After graduation he continued his love of the game by coaching at several different schools in Pennsylvania. Coach was an eccentric man who loved to talk about sports.

He is survived by his son and daughter-in-law, Ronald and Donna Knapp, Fluker, La.; daughter and son-in-law, Bevil Knapp and Ellis Lucia, New Orleans; two grandchildren, Trey and Rebecca, Fluker, La.; and many friends.

Funeral services will be held Friday, Feb. 14, 2003, at C.H. Landers Funeral Chapel, 21 Main St., Sidney, at 11 a.m. Friends may call from 9 to 11 a.m. on Friday prior to the service.

Burial will be in Prospect Hill Cemetery in Sidney in the spring.

Arrangements are under the direction of C.H. Landers, Inc., Sidney.

Francis A. Wheeler

SPRING HILL, Fla. — Francis Allan Wheeler, 80, of Spring Hill, Fla., passed away Monday, Feb. 10, 2003, at Hernando/Pasco Hospice, Brooksville.

He was born in Oneonta, N.Y., and moved to Spring Hill in 1991, from Grand Ledge, Mich.

He was Episcopalian by faith and a member of St. Andrews Episcopal Church. He graduated from Morris High School, N.Y., and Hartwick College, Oneonta, and received his master's degree from Syracuse University, N.Y. He also loved playing golf.

He retired from the Citizens Research Council in Lansing, Mich.

He is survived by his beloved wife, Virginia, of Spring Hill; sons, Scott of Portland, Mich., and Craig of Okemos, Mich.; sister, Louise Leach of Maryland, N.Y.; and seven grandchildren.

Services were entrusted to Brewer & Sons Funeral Homes and Cremation Services, Spring Hill Chapel.

Leona M. Daniels

ONEONTA — Mrs. Leona M. Daniels, 93, who passed away at The Meadows on Wednesday, Jan. 29, 2003, was predeceased by two brothers, Raymond and Lavere Lyons; one sister, Frances (Shelley) Spinola; and several nieces and nephews.

George E. Bell

UNADILLA — George Edward Bell, 81, of Unadilla, passed away Thursday evening, Feb. 13, 2003, in the nursing care facility of The Hospital in Sidney, following a long battle with cancer.

He was born March 21, 1921, in Unadilla, the son of the late Frank Arnold and Edith (Short) Bell.

He was married to Elizabeth A. Teter on Feb. 5, 1949, in Montrose, Pa.

Mr. Bell was a graduate of Unadilla Central School, Class of 1938. He served in the United States Army during World War II, from 1943 to 1945, having spent most of his Army time in the China-Burma-India Theater.

Following his discharge from the service, he was an Oneonta firefighter for a period of time He was a former Democratic candidate for Delaware County clerk, worked with the Boy Scouts of America and the Social Services Advisory Council of Otsego County.

Mr. Bell was a gifted, amateur artist in the watercolor medium, and a published poet, whose poetry provided joy, comfort and laughter to many.

He was a member and former vestryman of St. Matthew's Episcopal Church of Unadilla and a member of Joyce-Bell Post 578 American Legion of Unadilla.

George is survived by his wife, Elizabeth T. Bell of Unadilla; his daughters and sons-in-law, Georgia Bell-Codington and Garth Codington of Unadilla, Barbara and George Koberlein of Unadilla, Elizabeth Materazzo of Bainbridge and Lori and Stephen Bell of Burke, Va.; his son and daughter-in-law, Frank and Sharon Bell of Unadilla; also his grandchildren, Krista, Kristopher and Steven Koberlein, Mathew, Nicolas and Jessica Bell, Brian and Scott MacDonald, Miranda Materazzo and Michael and Alexis Bell. He is also survived by his sister, Mary B. Miller of Sidney, and several nieces, nephews, friends and his faithful dog, Fred.

He was predeceased by his brother, Frank, and his sister, Beulah.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Monday, Feb. 17, at St. Matthew's Episcopal Church, Unadilla, with Deacon Fayetta VanDermark officiating.

Burial will be later in Evergreen Hill Cemetery, Unadilla.

Friends may call at the Westcott Funeral Home Inc., 123 Main St., Unadilla, Sunday, Feb. 16, from 2 to 5 p.m., when the family will be in attendance.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Delaware Valley Humane Society, 101 E. Main St., Sidney, NY 13838.

Funeral arrangements are by the Westcott Funeral Home Inc., 123 Main St., Unadilla, under the direction of James S. Westcott and James C. Magee.

Kathryn H. Dunne

ONEONTA — Mrs. Kathryn H. Dunne, 99 years, died Friday, Feb. 14, 2003, at the Oneonta Nursing and Rehabilitation Center, Oneonta.

She was born Aug. 24, 1903, in Bovina Center, the daughter of William E. and Jennie B. (Gladstone) Hastings.

She married Clarence A. Dunne on March 9, 1946, in Amsterdam. Mr. Dunne predeceased her on June 11, 1964.

Kathryn graduated from Oneonta High School in the Class of 1922. She then attended Oneonta Normal School, graduating in 1925. She taught elementary education for the Amsterdam Public School System. In 1946, she moved back to the Oneonta area and was a substitute teacher for 10 years for the Oneonta school system.

She has been a member of the First United Presbyterian Church of Oneonta since 1915. She was the treasurer of the Sunday school for many years, as well as a member of the women's association of the church. She was a member of the Oneonta Federated Garden Club; a life member of the Hospital Auxiliary at A.O. Fox Memorial Hospital, as well as a member of the Northside Hobby Club (Home Bureau).

She is survived by cousins and friends.

Graveside services will be held in the spring at the Glenwood Cemetery, Oneonta.

It has been requested that in lieu of flowers, expressions of sympathy may be made to the Chaplain Fund at the A.O. Fox Memorial Hospital, One Norton Ave., Oneonta, NY 13820, in loving memory of Kathryn H. Dunne.

Funeral arrangements are by the Bookhout Funeral Home, Oneonta.

Frederick `Jay' Tompkins

ONEONTA — Frederick "Jay" Tompkins, 77, of Oneonta passed away on Thursday, Feb. 13, 2003, at the Kingston Hospital in Kingston.

He was born Feb. 6, 1926, in Yonkers, the son of Percy F. and Dorothy (Cullen) Tompkins Sr.

Fred was a veteran of World War II, serving with the United States Navy in the Central Pacific Theater. He was discharged as an electrician's mate, first class.

He graduated from New York University, where he received his bachelor's degree. He later continued his education at the State University College at Oneonta, and received a master's degree in economics.

Fred attended the First Church of Christian Science in Oneonta. He also spent many hours as a volunteer at the A. O. Fox Memorial Hospital Nursing Home.

He is survived by a brother, Percy F. Tompkins Jr., and his wife, Mary, of Oneonta, as well as 10 nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by a sister, Susan Ann Galipault.

Friends are invited to call at the Lester R. Grummons Funeral Home, 14 Grand St., Oneonta on Monday, Feb. 17, from 6 to 8 p.m., at which time the family will be in attendance.

A graveside committal service will be held in the spring in the Evergreen Cemetery, Otego.

Arrangements are by the Lester R. Grummons Funeral Home, Oneonta.

Peter Wright

MARGARETVILLE — Peter "Pete" Wright, 67, of Margaretville, died Thursday, Feb. 13, 2003.

He was born Oct. 17, 1935, at Sloan Kettering Hospital in New York City to Richard and Mary (Ryan) Wright.

He married Dorothy Sims March 9, 1957, in Sacred Heart Church, Yonkers.

Pete worked as a cook for the Avon company in Suffern and the Brass Rail in New York City for 26 years. He operated the Frontier Restaurant in Dunraven.

He was a sponsor and scorekeeper for the Delaware and Ulster Horseshoe League and a dart league sponsor for many years.

He is survived by his wife, Dorothy (Sims) Wright; one son and his wife, Keith and Wanda Wright; one daughter and her husband, Dori and Haywood Buerge Jr.; and two beloved grandchildren, Kaitlin and Kellsey Buerge.

Funeral services will be at 6 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 15, from the Hynes Funeral Home in Margaretville with the Very Rev. Robert H. Purcell officiating.

Spring burial will be in the Sanford Cemetery, Margaretville.

Calling hours will be held Saturday from 4 p.m. until time service time at 6 p.m.

Arrangements are by the Hynes Funeral Home, Margaretville.

Francis Burnett

JEFFERSON — Francis Burnett, 86, formerly of Jefferson, died Thursday, Feb. 13, 2003, at Robinson Terrace in Stamford.

He was born Nov. 22, 1916, in Jefferson, the son of LeRoy and Viola (Fancher) Burnett.

He married Elsa Harris in 1976, and she predeceased him.

A veteran of World War II, Mr. Burnett spent his life in the Jefferson area and was a self- employed carpenter there.

Survivors include a sister, Winifred Burnett of Albany, a sister-in-law, Gertrude Burnett of Jefferson, and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

Five brothers, Maurice, James, Lynn, Wayne and Ellis, predeceased him.

A memorial service will take place in the spring with burial in Evergreen Cemetery in Jefferson.

Arrangements are with the MacArthur Funeral Home, Hobart.

Nya Marie Frazier

ONEONTA — Nya Marie Frazier, infant daughter of McKinley and Joy Frazier of Oneonta died Wednesday, Feb. 12, 2003, at A. O. Fox Memorial Hospital, Oneonta.

Memorial services will be held at 3 p.m. on Tuesday, Feb. 18, at the Lewis-Hurley Funeral Home, 51 Dietz St., Oneonta, with the Rev. Judy Thistle, Fox Hospital chaplain, officiating.

Burial will be later at the convenience of the family.

Albert Crepeau

DAVENPORT — Memorial services for Albert Crepeau of Davenport, who passed away Monday, Feb. 10, 2003, will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Feb. 18, at the Lewis-Hurley Funeral Home, 51 Dietz St., Oneonta, with the Rev. Mel Farmer, pastor of the River Street Baptist Church, officiating.

Burial will be later at the convenience of the family.

Samuel R. Veronesi

PITTSFIELD — Samuel R. Veronesi, 86, of Pittsfield, passed away Feb. 14, 2003, at the Chase Memorial Nursing, Home, New Berlin.

He was born May 3, 1916, in Smithton, Pa., the son of Samuel and Julia (Beck) Veronesi.

He married Marion Spencer on Nov. 18, 1945. She died July 18, 1999.

He spent his childhood in the Pittsfield area. He was a graduate of New Berlin High School.

He was a poultry farmer and postmaster in New Berlin.

He served in the U.S. Army T4 443rd AAA Battalion 36th Infantry Division for three years during eight campaigns of World War II, including North Africa, Sicily, Italy, France and Germany. He was a member and past master of Phoebus Lodge No. 82 F&AM.

He was a fire commissioner for the Pittsfield Fire District, town supervisor and member of the Otsego County Board of Supervisors and school board member in New Berlin.

He is survived by one daughter, Donna Morrison, Sherburne; one son, Gary Veronesi, San Diego, Calif.; six grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and one nephew, Richard Veronesi, Phoenix.

He was predeceased by one brother, Albert W. Veronesi.

Calling hours are from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 20, 2003, at the Dakin Funeral Home, New Berlin.

Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Feb. 21, 2003, at the Dakin Funeral Home, New Berlin, with the Rev. Charles Taylor of St. Andrew's Episcopal Church, New Berlin, officiating.

Memorial donations may be made to the Pittsfield Emergency Squad, New Berlin.

Interment will be in St. Andrew's Cemetery, New Berlin.
