Everett Snyder

VEGA — Everett Snyder, 72, passed away Feb. 15, 2003, at the Margaretville Memorial Hospital.

He was born May 20, 1930, in Argusville, the son of Abram Snyder and Marjorie Button.

He was married twice; first to Esther Finch, and then to Patricia Wright.

He served in the U.S. Army from June 1955 through March 1957.

He worked as an operating engineer for 30 years for Union No. 825, Newburgh.

Everett was a mechanic and a collector of cars, trucks and tractors. He also liked to play the guitar and harmonica together.

He is survived by five daughters, Susan Wright, Stamford, Shirley Payne and husband, Bob, Hobart, Barbara Snyder, Denver, Tricia Davis and husband, Richard, Grand Gorge, and Evette Snyder, Grand Gorge; one son, Vincent Snyder and wife, Anne, Roxbury; 11 grandchildren, Dwayne, Scotty, Daniel, Ronnie Sue and Jaime Wright, Tamara, Kristin and Greg Snyder, Lucas Brewer, and Jacob and Jared Davis; two great-grandchildren, Hayley Wright and Hunter Chase Bouck; two sisters, Verna Snyder Delamarter and husband, Robert, Hobe Sound, Fla., and Doris Snyder Cook and husband, Ernest, Preston Hollow; and one brother, Paul Snyder and wife, Judy (Colts) Snyder, Harpersfield.

Calling hours will be on Wednesday, Feb. 19, 2003, from 2 to 4 and 7 t 9 p.m. at the Miller Funeral Home, Roxbury.

Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 20, 2003, with the Rev. Richard Dykstra, officiating, and assisted by the Rev. Larry Major, at the Jay Gould Memorial Reformed Church, Roxbury.

Burial will be in the Fairlawn Cemetery, Prattsville, at a later date.

Contributions may be made to the Roxbury Ambulance Fund, the Memorial Fund of the United Methodist Church, Grand Gorge, the Jay Gould Memorial Reformed Church, Roxbury, or to the Pilgrim Holiness Church, Grand Gorge.

Funeral arrangements are by the Miller Funeral Home, Roxbury, NY 12474.

William Duboveck

MARGARETVILLE — William Duboveck, 83, of East Hubbell Hill Road, Margaretville, passed away Feb. 15, 2003, at his residence.

William was born in New York City on June 28, 1919. His parents Nicholas and Annie Duboveck were immigrants from Russia. Nicholas was a tailor and Annie a seamstress.

In the early 1920s, they moved to Hubbell Hill, Margaretville, and bought a dairy farm.

William attended Delhi Tech for agriculture and New York University, where he studied Russian. He was a sergeant in the U.S. Army during World War II and a translator. He served in Germany and France.

After the war he bought a farm on Hubbell Hill and married his wife of 56 years, Olga Raitzka. They were married Jan. 25, 1947, in NYC. On the farm they raised chickens and sold the eggs to all the large hotels in the Catskills and NYC. They also grew cauliflower and later ran a dairy farm.

In the early 1960s he joined the carpenters union. Later in the 1970s he began building homes on his property. His idea was affordable homes for families. He was a true visionary in this project. Bill, as he was often called, was truly a colorful character, and an innovative man for his time.

He was a member of Middletown American Legion Post 216, Margaretville.

He is survived by his wife, Olga Duboveck, Margaretville; two daughters, Natalie and her husband, Tim, Smith, Illinois, and Kathy Duboveck, Margaretville; one grandson, Jason Smith; two sisters, Nadja Yonta and Elizabeth Berinato; and nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by one son, Nick, who died in May of 1971, and one brother, John Duboveck.

Calling hours will be from 10 a.m. until funeral services at 11:30 a.m. on Tuesday, Feb. 18, 2003, at the Hynes Funeral Home, Margaretville, with the Rev. Richard Dykstra, officiating.

Spring burial in the Margaretville Cemetery, Margaretville.

Arrangements are by the Hynes Funeral Home, Margaretville.

Katherine E. MacArthur

DAVENPORT — Katherine E. MacArthur, 92, of Davenport, died Friday, Feb. 14, 2003, at New York State Veterans Home in Oxford.

She was born March 25, 1910, in Davenport, the daughter of Leo R. and Mary (MacDonald) Olmstead.

She married Horace Burns in 1928, and he died in 1979. On Nov. 13, 1948, she married Everett Orr MacArthur in Pennsylvania, he died Oct. 19, 1988.

A lifelong Davenport resident, Katherine was a member of North Kortright Presbyterian Church.

She enjoyed needlework and lovingly created afghans for all of her family members.

A daughter, Mary E. and her husband, Gerald, Watkins of Earlville; several grandchildren; and nieces and nephews survive.

A son, Walter R. Burns, predeceased her in February 1951, in the Philippines while on military duty; and two brothers, Richard Olmstead and Dale Olmstead; and a sister, Shirley Callahan.

Graveside services will be announced in the spring at North Kortright Cemetery, North Kortright.

Contributions in her memory may be made to North Kortright Presbyterian Church.

Arrangements are with the MacArthur Funeral Home, Davenport.

Karen L. Davis

HAMDEN — Karen L. Davis, 53, of Hamden, passed away Monday morning, Feb. 17, 2003, at her home with her family by her side, after an extended illness.

The daughter of Richard J. and Arlene M. (Eckert) Utter, she was born April 15, 1949, in Delhi, was a 1967 graduate of Downsville Central School, received her A.A.S. degree in business from SUNY Delhi, and married Thomas J.C. Davis on June 1, 1968, in De Lancey.

A lifelong area resident, for 29 years she owned and operated "Karen's Beauty Salon" in Hamden and, subsequently, was an insurance agent/broker for eight years with J. Bramley and Associates, Delhi.

Karen was an active member of the Hamden Presbyterian Church where she served as an elder, trustee, treasurer and youth education leader for 16 years. She was also a 25-year member of The Gideons International.

Surviving are her husband of 35 years, Thomas J.C. Davis; two sons, Shannon R. Davis and his fiance, Sarah Kachelmeyer, Fredonia, and Sean F. Davis, Hamden; a granddaughter, Lily; her mother, Arlene Utter, Hamden; a brother, Wade Utter, Afton; three uncles, Bernard Utter, Florida, Larry Eckert, Oneonta, and Leonard Eckert, Walton; two aunts, Thelma Hammond, Walton, and Sandra Johnson, Delhi; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

Friends are invited to call on Wednesday at the Hall & Peet Funeral Home, Delhi (the family will not be in attendance). Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Thursday, Feb. 20, at the Hamden Presbyterian Church, with the Rev. Bert More officiating.

Burial will be later in the Hamden Cemetery.

Memorial contributions may be made to Hamden Presbyterian Church.

Arrangements are entrusted to Robert A. Peet & Son, Delhi.

Myron D. George

NEW LISBON — Myron Deland George, 65, of New Lisbon, died Sunday, Feb. 16, 2003, at Bassett Hospital, Cooperstown.

He was born on March 12, 1937, in Edmeston, the son of Myron and Katherine (Angell) George.

He was married to Marion A. Pierce in December 1981, in the Second Baptist Church in Edmeston.

He was employed by Otsego County as a maintenance supervisor.

He was a member of the Farmers Lodge F&AM of Edmeston for several years, and was also a member of the Burlington Baptist Church.

He is survived by his wife, Marion, of New Lisbon; his children, Betty Sue Higgins and her husband, Michael, of Gardner, Maine, Mary-Ann Macintosh and her husband, David, of Cazenovia, Nancy Lou Calderone and her husband, Phillip, of Amsterdam, Thomas George and wife, Tammy, of Burlington Flats; his stepchildren, including Timothy McTaggart and his wife, Kathleen, of Worcester, and Laurie Meyers, also of Worcester.

Deland is also survived by his nine grandchildren who were truly the love of his life.

He is also survived by his father-in-law, Harold Pierce of New Lisbon; a brother-in-law, William Pierce and his wife, Patricia, of Howes Cave; along with several aunts, uncles and cousins.

Calling hours will be held on Wednesday, Feb. 19, 2003, from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. at the Johnston Funeral Home in Morris. A Masonic service conducted by the Farmers Lodge of Edmeston will be held at 8:30 p.m. on Wednesday at the funeral home.

Those who wish are asked to make donations to the Garrattsville Emergency Squad or the Burlington Baptist Church in Deland's memory.

Graveside funeral services will be held in the spring at the Edmeston Union Cemetery.

Funeral arrangements are by the Johnston Funeral Home of Morris.

Frederick Jay Tompkins

ONEONTA — Due to Monday's snow storm, visitation for Frederick Jay Tompkins will be held Tuesday, Feb. 18, 2003, from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Lester R. Grummons Funeral Home in Oneonta, at which time the family will be in attendance.

Dorothy M. Weeks

HARTWICK — Dorothy Mary Weeks, 86 years, of Hartwick, died Sunday, Feb. 16, 2003, at her home. She was born Aug. 5, 1916, the daughter of Charles and Mary (Bresee) Manley.

She was predeceased by her husband, J. Ralph Weeks, and a granddaughter, Michelle Campbell.

She is survived by a son and daughter-in-law, Thomas and Gladys Weeks of Hartwick; a daughter and son-in-law, Marie and Verne Campbell of Moneta, Va.; three grandchildren, Sheri and Steven Smith of Cooperstown, Michael and April Weeks of Milford, Pa., and John and Sue Campbell of Rocky Mount, Va.; four great-grandchildren, Ariel Baker Smith, Chelsea Martin Campbell and Ryan and Evan Weeks; as well as several nieces and nephews.

Dorothy was a lifelong resident of Hartwick. She was a dedicated wife, mother and grandmother and will be fondly remembered for her spirited card games with her dear friends and her dedication to her community and, most of all, her love of life.

Funeral and committal services will be held on Thursday, Feb. 20, at 1 p.m. at the Bookhout Funeral Home, 357 Main St., Oneonta, with the Rev. Jack Klosheim, Pastor of the Community Bible Chapel of Toddsville, officiating.

Burial will be in the spring at the Hartwick Cemetery, Hartwick.

Calling hours will be held at the funeral home on Thursday from 11:30 a.m. until service time at 1 p.m.

In lieu of flowers, those wishing may make memorial contributions to the Hartwick Emergency Squad, Hartwick, NY, 13348 in loving memory of Dorothy Mary Weeks.

Funeral arrangements are by the Bookhout Funeral Home, Oneonta.

Avis B. Pritchard

MASONVILLE — Avis B. Pritchard, age 91, of Masonville, N.Y., passed away on Sunday, Feb. 16, 2003, at The Hospital, Sidney.

Avis was the daughter of William H. and Bertha (Price) Butts. She was born June 22, 1911, in Masonville.

She married William E. Pritchard on Sept. 19, 1931. He passed away June 11, 1993.

Avis was a 70-year member of the Masonville Grange. She was also a member of the Masonville Federated Church, the Masonville Craft Club and the Masonville Order of the Eastern Star. She had a beauty shop in her home for several years. She also worked at Scintilla.

Avis is survived by three daughters, Delores Mattison, Frances (Robert) Carroll and Gail (James) Wormsley, all of Masonville; two sons, Calvin (Beverly) Pritchard of Masonville and Elliot (Betty) Pritchard of Swansea, S.C.; 20 grandchildren; 24 great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by three sisters, Ethel Butts, Freda Butts and Neva DeBeVoise; three brothers, Perry Butts, Alton Butts and Norris Butts; one grandson, Stephen Pritchard (1969); one great-grandson, Nicholas Larmon (1985); one daughter-in-law, Shirley (Palmetier) Pritchard (1996); and one son-in-law, Charles Mattison (1993).

The family extends special thanks to Jason and Lisa Page of Coventryville for the special care they gave Avis the past three months.

A memorial service will be held at the Masonville Federated Church at a later date.

Memorial donations may be sent to the Masonville Federated Church or the Masonville Emergency Squad.

Robert W. Mills

LA CROSSE, Wis. — Robert W. "Bill" Mills, 64, of La Crosse, died Saturday, Feb. 1, 2003, at Franciscan Skemp Medical Center in La Crosse, Wis.

He was born March 3, 1938, in Delhi, N.Y., to Robert W. and Virginia (Platt) Mills.

He married Elda Trimbell on Dec. 29, 1968. She died Dec. 23, 2002.

Bill worked for Siemens Communication Corporation for 35 years as an equipment installation engineer and troubleshooter. He was an amateur photographer, an accomplished woodworker and a computer specialist.

He is survived by his mother, Virginia Dezso of Oneonta; sister Roberta (Gerald) Furgerson of Treadwell, N.Y.; two stepchildren; eight stepgrandchildren; five step-great-grandchildren; two nieces; one nephew; two grand nieces; and a grand nephew.

Memorial services will be held at 7 p.m. on Thursday, Feb. 20, from the Blaschke Funeral Homes, 401 West Ave. So., La Crosse. The Rev. Roger Sachs will officiate with burial of remains to be held in Greenwood Cemetery, Dalton, Wis., at a later date.

Friends and family may call at the funeral home from 6 p.m. until the time of service.

Memorials are requested for First Evangelical Lutheran School's computer science area.

May-Jean Howard

STAMFORD — May-Jean Howard, 75, of Stamford, N.Y. and Sun Lakes, Ariz., passed away Monday, Feb. 17, 2003, in Stamford, N.Y., in the loving arms of four of her children.

She was born June 9, 1927, in Stamford, the daughter of William and Ester Falconer Kendall Warren. She grew up in Stamford and graduated from Stamford Central School in 1944.

She entered the United States Cadet Nursing Corps after graduating from the Rochester School of Nursing. She began her career in the Panama Canal Zone where she worked in relief efforts.

There she met Walter Addison Howard. They were married on May 1, 1951.

She earned her master's degree in psychology and worked extensively in the health care industry as a registered nurse, counselor, businesswoman and consultant while raising a family. Throughout her life, she traveled extensively and visited or lived in numerous places in Europe, the Middle East, Africa, South America, the Far East and Antarctica.

Forty-five years later, after retirement in 1991, May-Jean returned to her childhood home of Stamford where she immersed herself in village activities as a volunteer at the thrift shop, writing grants for the library and fund-raising for the Stamford museum. She was one of the founding members and secretary of the Stamford Historical Society.

She is survived by her brother John H. (Jack) Friedmann and sister-in-law Dorothy of Stamford; two daughters, Lara York and husband, Jim, of Scottsdale, Ariz., and Dallis Howard-Crow and husband, Sean, of Peoria, Ill.; daughter-in-law Kelly Daley and husband, Mike, of Palm Springs, Calif.; stepson Dan Howard and wife, Suneeya, of Anchorage, Alaska; two sons, Matt Howard and wife, Debbie, of College Station, Texas, and Luke Howard and wife, Leverne, of Charleston, S.C.; 11 grandchildren, Matt, Nathan, Addison, Caroline, Ashley, Amanda, May Jean, Emily, Samantha, Jackson and Lucas; and nieces Catherine L. Friedmann of Utica, N.Y., and Cindy L. Friedmann-Sharshon, of King Ferry, N.Y.

She was predeceased in death by a daughter, Ami; a step-daughter, Kim; a son, Samuel; and a grandson, Joshua.

A memorial service will be held at the Hall Funeral Home in Stamford at 11 a.m. on Thursday, Feb. 20.

Memorial donations may be made to Stamford Historical Society or Hospice. A light luncheon will be provided following the service at the First Presbyterian Church, Main Street in Stamford.

Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to Hall Funeral Home, Stamford, under the direction of William A. Tari.

Margaret J. Platz

GILBERTSVILLE — Margaret J. Platz, 81, of Gilbertsville passed away Wednesday, February 19, 2003 at her home.

She was born July 27, 1921, daughter of the late John M. and Anna Stark Platz in Deans, NJ.

Margaret graduated from Sidney High School in 1939.

She was employed by Keith Clark in Sidney from 1962 to 1967 and by General Instruments from 1968 to 1983.

She is survived by a niece, great nieces, great nephews and cousins.

She was predeceased by one brother, John W. Platz; and one sister, Marie Wright.

Funeral services will be held Friday, February 21, 2003 at 2:00 PM from C.H. Landers Funeral Chapel, 21 Main Street, Sidney.

Friends and family may call from 12 noon to 2:00 PM on Friday.

Burial will be in Maplewood Cemetery in Mt. Upton in the spring.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Gilbertsville Emergency Squad.

Arrangements are by C.H. Landers, Inc. Sidney, NY.
