Borghild Wust

EDMESTON — Borghild (Betty) Wust, 86, of Cooperstown, passed away on Tuesday, February 18, 2003 at Bassett Hospital, Cooperstown.

She had resided at Woodside Hall in Cooperstown for approximately one and a half years.

She was born on November 19, 1916 in Bergen, Norway, the daughter of Hans and Hanna Hovick.

She married Karl Johnson in 1935 who predeceased her in December of 1988.

She is survived by their children, Rev. Henry Johnson and wife, Janet, of Chambersburg, PA, Lennart Johnson and wife, Carol, of Burlington, Linnea Nelson and husband, Larry, of Hartwick; eight grandchildren and five great-grandchildren, Amy and Jay Lyon and family of Burlington, Alan and Keri Johnson and family of Burlington, Kristopher Johnson of Oneonta, Matthew Nelson of Mount Vision, Bryce Nelson of Hartwick, Karla Johnson, Kristine Johnson and Elizabeth Johnson.

She was also predeceased by a grandson, David Johnson, in 2001.

She married William Wust of Edmeston in 1989 who predeceased her in December of 2002.

Surviving are her stepchildren and their families, Charles and Nadine Wust, Sidney Wust, William Jr. and Susan Wust, John and Shelly Wust, and Richard and Michele Wust, all of Edmeston.

Borghild was a member of Saint John's Lutheran Church in West Burlington. She was active in Home Bureau and served as a 4-H leader.

She was well known for her culinary talents and owned and operated the Karlsborg Tourist Farm with her husband for many years.

She worked as a chef for Stephen Clark of Cooperstown for thirteen years and also worked at the Thanksgiving Home in Cooperstown.

She loved to read and enjoyed her many plants and flowers. She will be long remembered for her generosity, gentleness and caring way.

The family expresses its heartfelt thanks to her sister, Erna Richards, her brother and his wife, Henry and Nell Hovick, for all their love and support. Also to their family friend, Ingeborg Quitzau and to Peggy and the staff at Woodside Hall for their kindness and caring.

Calling hours will be held at the Dakin Funeral Home in New Berlin on Thursday, February 20 from 4-7 PM.

Funeral services will be held at the Saint John's Lutheran Church, West Burlington, on Friday, February 21 at 11:00 AM with the Rev. Lynn Ash and the Rev. William Rittberger officiating.

Funeral arrangements are with the Dakin Funeral Home in New Berlin.

Julia L. LaPlant

HAGAMAN — Julia L. LaPlant, 92, of Chuctanunda Street, died peacefully on Wednesday, February 12, 2003 in her home with loving family at her side.

The daughter of the late Ervin and Lillian (Rosearans) Porter, she was born on August 10, 1910 in Fulton, where she was raised and educated.

She was married to George LaPlant who predeceased her in 1974.

For thirty-three years she had resided in Milwaukee, WI, returning to Hagaman in 1993.

While living in Milwaukee, she was a member of the VFW Auxiliary.

She retired at the age of sixty-two from Gibbons Diner where she had worked as a dishwasher.

She enjoyed traveling, loved to dance and was an amateur photographer. She truly enjoyed life and lived it to the fullest.

She gloried in the presence of her grandchildren and will always be remembered as a loving, caring and helpful person.

She will be greatly missed by her family.

She is survived by her three sons and their wives, Glen and Carol Jackson of Rome, WI, Duncan and Marion LaPlant of Fredonia, WI, and David and Kay LaPlant of Madia, CA; three daughters, Julia Green of Hagaman, Edna Bailey of Milwaukee, WI, and Irene Gardner and her husband, Robert, of Richfield Springs; twenty-seven grandchildren; thirty-seven great-grandchildren; four great-great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

Besides her husband George, she was predeceased by an infant son, Donald, and a great-grandson, Matthew Highby.

Funeral service will be held in J. Seaton McGrath Funeral Home, 40 West James Street, Richfield Springs in May at a time to be announced.

Internment will then follow in Springfield Center Cemetery.

Barbara Allison

ONEONTA — Barbara Jean Breuster Allison, 73, beloved wife of Asa Allison, died unexpectedly on February 19, 2003, at Fox Hospital in Oneonta.

Private memorial services will be held at St. James' Episcopal Church in Oneonta at the convenience of the family.

There will be no calling hours.

Those who wish may make contributions to the A.O. Fox Hospital Auxiliary, 1 North Ave., Oneonta, 13820.

Arrangements are by the Lewis-Hurley Funeral Home, 51 Dietz Street, Oneonta.

Jeffrey Butts

ONEONTA — Jeffrey Butts, 48, of Oneonta, died unexpectedly on Sunday, February 16 at his residence.

He was born May 7, 1954 in Sidney, the son of Leroy and Virginia (Wiedeman) Butts.

He was a former employee of KMS Plastics in Oneonta.

He has been a lifelong area resident.

He is survived by his mother of Datona Beach, Fla.; a brother; a sister; and several nephews, nieces, and cousins.

Memorial graveside services will be held in the spring at Plains Cemetery at a time to be announced later.

There will be no calling hours.

Arrangements are by the Lewis-Hurley Funeral Home, 51 Dietz Street, Oneonta.

Beatrice Leach

NEW BERLIN — Beatrice Ione Leach of New Berlin passed away on Wednesday, February 19, 2003 at the home of her nephew and his wife, Rex and Faith Yurenka of Burlington, where she had resided for the last eight months.

She was born on May 3, 1907 in Norwich, oldest daughter of Adolph and Elizabeth Van Warner.

She attended school in Cardtown and Ketchum, rural schools in the Town of Pittsfield and graduated from New Berlin High School in 1926.

She attended Oneonta State Normal school and taught in Ketchum for nine years.

She moved to Greene in 1938 and taught at the Chenango Forks Central School for five years.

In 1942, during the war, she worked at Benedix Aviation in Sidney for three years.

After the war she returned to Oneonta State Teacher's College and received her bachelor's degree in education.

She married Richard Leach in 1946 and they moved to Poughkeepsie where she taught in the Wappingers Central School and became treasurer of the Faculty Association.

She attended Vassar College where she studied the Russian Language.

She was a member of the Methodist Church and Business and Professional Women and Senior Citizens group while living in Poughkeepsie.

She retired from teaching in 1970 after being in the profession for over thirty-five years.

She and her husband returned to her family home on East River Road in New Berlin.

She was predeceased by her husband in 1973.

She spent her winters in Florida where she joined the Auxiliary of the Manatea Memorial Hospital and she was a member of the Bradanton Shuffle Board Club.

After selling her family home in 1993, Beatrice resided at 28 Academy Street in New Berlin and became a member of the 60 Plus Club, the Senior Citizens Club, and the First United Church.

She is survived by two sisters, Betty Watson of Myrtle Beach, SC, and Beverly Corcorin of Pittsburg, KA; a step-daughter Anita Cluff; two step-grandsons, Steve and Bill; and a step-granddaughter, Barbra, all of Brisben.

A memorial service will be held at the Dakin Funeral Home in New Berlin on Sunday, February 23 at 2:00 PM with the Rev. John Young, minister of the Baptist Church in Burlington Flats, officiating.

Donations in her memory may be made to the New Berlin Library.

Arrangements are by the Dakin Funeral Home, New Berlin.

Irene C. Simonds

OTEGO — Irene C. Simonds, 61, of Otego, died Thursday, Feb. 20, 2003, at A.O. Fox Memorial Hospital, Oneonta.

Irene was born in Cooperstown, July 17, 1941, to Irene Decker.

She married Lynwood Simonds at the Otsdawa Baptist Church on Jan. 11, 1969.

Irene worked for Corning Glass Company, Opportunities for Otsego, and as a cook for several area restaurants. In recent years she had worked from her home as a confectioner.

She was a member of the Otsdawa Baptist Church and had been a Sunday School teacher, and was past Senior Regent of the Oneonta Moose Lodge. Her favorite activities were bingo, dancing and baking cakes and candy, especially for the community hayride for 30 years. Irene loved to laugh and entertain her friends with the latest jokes.

Irene is survived by her husband Lynwood Simonds of Otego; children and mates, son Richard William Beers and Debi Leach of Rocky Gap, Va., daughters Linda L. Millbower and Bob Piedigrossi of Cortland, N.Y., Athena (Ann) Thompson and James B. Mileski of Wells Bridge, N.Y., Kay (Kitty) and Kenneth D. Bain of Oneonta, Lyn Marie and Andrew Poltz of Afton, N.Y.; brother Leslie Decker of Oneonta; sister Barbara Davies of Stittville, N.Y.; and grandchildren Jeffrey, Karen, Richard, Thomas, Stephani, Britani and Andrew.

She was predeceased by her parents and a sister, Mary Mouroski.

Calling hours will be on Saturday from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. at the Bookhout Funeral Home, 357 Main St., Oneonta.

Funeral services will be Sunday at 2 p.m. at Bookhout Funeral Home, Oneonta.

Memorial donations may be made to the Otego Emergency Squad in Irene's memory.

Interment will be in the spring at Otsdawa Cemetery, Otego, by Bookhout Funeral Home.

Gladys Dougherty

DICKINSON — Gladys Dougherty, 77, of North Fenton, and a long time resident of the Andes area, passed away on Wednesday, Feb. 19, 2003, in the Town of Dickinson.

Gladys was born April 5, 1925, in Pennsylvania the daughter of Robert and Cora Place Finkle.

She married Charles H. Dougherty on Sept. 4, 1943, in New Kingston. She shared in the operation of a dairy farm with her husband, was an assistant cook at the Lake Delaware Camp and had a "cookie shack" at the roadside where customers would purchase her goodies on the honor system. She is also remembered as a devoted mother and doting grandmother.

Surviving are her husband, Charles, of North Fenton; two daughters and a son-in-law, Shiela and John Stratton of North Fenton and Cora Meyers of Otego; a son, Daniel Dougherty of Otego; brother Robert Finkle of Andes; 12 grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be on Saturday, Feb. 22, at 1 p.m. at the Cabin Hill Presbyterian Church in the Town of Andes with the Rev. Daniel McCollister officiating.

Burial will be in New Kingston Cemetery at a later date.

Friends may call at the Jester-Stanley Funeral Home in Andes on Friday where the family will be in attendance from 6 to 8 p.m.

Barbara Allison

ONEONTA — Barbara Jean Brewster Allison, 73, beloved wife of Asa C. Allison Jr., of Oneonta, died unexpectedly at A.O. Fox Hospital on Wednesday, Feb. 19, 2003.

She was born Aug. 1, 1929, in Batavia, N.Y., a daughter of John and Emma Ulrich Brewster.

She graduated from Batavia High School in 1945.

She married Asa C. Allison Jr. on June 24, 1950, at First Baptist Church, Batavia. In 1968, the Allisons moved to their Main Street residence in Oneonta.

Barbara was a homemaker who particularly enjoyed cooking for large family gatherings and floral gardening. She was a member of St. James' Episcopal Church, Oneonta. She belonged to the A.O. Fox Memorial Hospital Auxiliary for more than 30 years, and for much of that time participated in the "Thursday Afternoon Group" that visited with the residents at the Fox Nursing Home. She was also a 40-year member of the Order of the Eastern Star. She will always be remembered for her unfailing love for, and kindness to, her family, friends and neighbors.

She is survived by her husband, Asa, at home; a daughter, Barbara J. Allison, of Oneonta; two sons and daughters-in-law, Asa Craig and Dori Allison of West Laurens, and Cameron Scott and Nancy E. Allison of Oneonta; five grandchildren, Robert B. Gregory Jr. of Stamford, Dawn M. Gregory of Sharon Springs, and Raphael J. Zimmerman, Philip K. Zimmerman and Mari Allison of Oneonta; and four great-grandchildren, Heather Sawyer, Jesse Campbell and Matthew Campbell of West Laurens, and Makayla Miller of Cortland.

She is also survived by a sister and brother-in-law, Ruth and John Orzech of New Port Richey, Fla.; a brother and sister-in-law, John and Jessie Brewster, also of New Port Richey; a sister-in-law, Diane Brewster of North Chili; and many nieces and nephews. She is predeceased by two sisters, Helen Botts and Dorothy Burch, and a brother, Gary Brewster.

Private memorial services will be held at St. James' Episcopal Church, Oneonta, at the convenience of the family.

There will be no calling hours.

Arrangements are by the Lewis-Hurley Funeral Home, 51 Dietz St., Oneonta.

Charles Butler

DELHI — Charles Butler, 86, of Delhi, died Thursday, Feb. 20, 2003, at home.

He was born March 19, 1916, in Walton, the only child of Loren H. and Fannie M. (Chilson) Butler.

He was a graduate of Laurens Central School in the Class of 1934. Mr. Butler also attended schools in Walton and Mount Vision. Following graduation he attended Hemfield Engineering School on Long Island.

A veteran of the U.S. Navy, Charles served during World War II in the European/North Africa and the Asian/Pacific theaters of the war.

Mr. Butler was employed at Elmore Milling Co. and the West Nesbitt Feed Co.; for New York State Electric and Gas in Oneonta and Richfield Springs; in Rochester at an electric company.; drove a mail truck and retired from the town of Delhi.

A son, James Butler of Parker, Colo., survives.

Funeral services will be at 1 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 27, 2003, at the MacArthur Funeral Home, Delhi, with the Rev. Mother Susan Cole of Christ's Church of Walton officiating. Calling hours will be on Wednesday from 7 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home.

Burial will take place in the spring in the Milford Cemetery, Milford.

Arrangements are with the MacArthur Funeral Home, Delhi.

Luise Maender

MARGARETVILLE — Luise Maender, 90, of Margaretville, passed away Feb. 19, 2003, at A.O. Fox Memorial Hospital in Oneonta.

She was born on July 6, 1912, in Lahr, Germany, one of six children, born to Wilhelm and Elise (Meppiel) Weinbrecht.

She married Otto K. Maender on Oct. 19, 1937, in Brooklyn. He died in 1973.

Luise was a cook and had worked at the In Between Restaurant in Margaretville, and later cooked for the students and staff at Margaretville Central School, retiring in June 1978.

She moved to Margaretville in February 1949, from Bayside, Queens. She was a member of the Margaretville United Methodist Church. In earlier years, she enjoyed bowling and had crocheted also for many years.

She is survived by two sons, Norman Maender and daughter-in-law, JoAnn, Scotia, and Otto Maender and daughter-in-law, Kay, Seabrook, S.C.; four grandchildren, Eric Maender, Atlanta, Ga., Capt. Ryan Maender, Clarksville, Tenn., Kara Phillips, Olney, Md., and Laura Lawson, Mooresville, Ind.; three great-grandchildren, David and Amanda Lawson and Peter Phillips; and nieces and nephews.

Calling hours will be from 7 to 9 p.m. Friday, Feb. 28, 2003, at the Hynes Funeral Home, Margaretville.

Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday, March 1, 2003, at the United Methodist Church, Margaretville, with the Rev. Joon Woo Lee, officiating.

Burial will be at a later date in the Andes Cemetery, Andes.

Memorial gifts in memory of Luise Maender may be made to the United Methodist Church, Margaretville.

Arrangements are by the Hynes Funeral Home, Margaretville.
